As a child, I was proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present-part northern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all southern. There was no sound I loved more than my grandmother’s accent: thick, sweet, warm.
While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities. In that embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbol of everything I thought I hated about my life in the rural South. I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer. I would have to talk less “country”. So I killed a piece of myself. I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else-change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in college. She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her roots. Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.
Emily is two years younger and she cared about my opinion. I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel(元音)sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. Now, I see that it was actually about justifying my hiding part of myself.
Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. Now that I am grown and have left the South, it’s important to me.
What made the author want to leave her hometown
A. Appeal of convenience in cities. B. Her dream of becoming a writer.
C. Outside prejudice against southerners. D. Her desire for the northern accent.
25. How did the author feel about the mistake of Emily’s mother
A. Upset. B. Pleased.
C. Ashamed. D. Surprised.
26. Why on earth did the author try to change Emily’s accent
A. To prove herself right. B. To help Emily be a reporter.
C. To make herself influential. D. To protect Emily’s self-dignity.
27. What message does the text want to convey
A. Stay true to your roots. B. Never do things by halves.
C. Hold on to your dreams. D. Never judge a person by his accent.

We know that China is the largest and fastest growing consumer market in the world. What is less well understood are the forces that shape consumerism in the world's most populous country. In my view, there are some social and cultural aspects at play that drive consumer spending.
Consumerism is related to freedom. To have a choice means to have the consumer choice. You are what you consume. Consumption is an expression of self. It allows you to explore the world through its products, to experiment with lifestyle choices, and to do so safely and anonymously(匿名地). You might never get to France, but you can try French wine. California might be far, but you can go to Shanghai Disneyland. Indeed, the enthusiasm for choice is reflected in the enthusiasm Chinese consumers have for online shopping.
Consumerism is a statement of success. American economist Thorstein Veblen popularized the concept of “conspicuous consumption”. When consumption is no longer driven only by need, it becomes a way of making a statement that you have disposable(可自由支配的) income and you can — at least in certain respects — enjoy life on your terms. Simple pleasures — a pair of shoes, a smartphone, designer clothing — become statements of personal identity.
The collective experience is focused. We like participating in group events. FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, goes beyond cultures. But I suspect this trend is stronger in China than in the West because Confucian culture does not celebrate outsiders as the West's culture does. Social media reinforce(强化) this collective pattern so that shopping and dining are shared experiences. Opinions are crowd sourced. And the merchants reinforce this pattern by supporting holiday sales, group buying, and other promotions.
Successful brands in China are able to handle most or all of the above considerations. The consumer must not only be delighted with your product. The journey of the consumer must also respect these socio cultural aspects.
28.What's mainly talked about in the passage
A.Chinese are growing wealthier.
B.China's fast growing market economy.
C.Chinese socio cultural influences on consumerism.
D.Chinese consumers' preference for quality rather than quantity.
29.What does Paragraph 2 focus on
A.Shopping online is a new experience.
B.Consumption can be a reflection of freedom.
C.Foreign products can be purchased in China.
D.Shopping around the world is a favorable choice.
30.What do the underlined words “conspicuous consumption” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.The ability to cover one's real need in daily life.
B.Spending money in order to keep up with others.
C.The purchase of expensive items to display status.
D.Buying abundant goods and delivering them to others.
31.Why does the author suspect FOMO is stronger in China
A.Social media play a bigger role in their lives.
B.Following the trend is what people like better.
C.Chinese people have less contact with the strangers.
D.Confucian culture is less likely to appreciate outsiders.
D
For generations, depression has been seen as an illness, disorder or even weakness. Such an idea makes sense because depression causes suffering and even death. But what if we’ve got it all wrong
The common wisdom is that depression starts in the mind with abnormal thinking. That leads to symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, or tiredness. Now, models like the Polyvagal Theory suggest that we've got it backward. It's the body that detects danger and initiates a defense strategy meant to help us survive. That biological strategy is called immobilization, and it demonstrates in the mind and the body with a set of symptoms we call depression.
When we think of depression as unnecessary suffering, we are telling people with depression that they are not part of the group, they are not right and they don' t belong. That robs them of hope. But when we begin to understand that depression, at least initially, happens for a good reason we lift the shame. Instead, people with depression are courageous survivors, not damaged sick people.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is constantly scanning our internal and external environment for signs of danger. If our ANS detects a threat or even a simple lack of safety, its next strategy is the fight or flight response, which we often feel as anxiety. Sometimes the threat is so bad or goes on for so long, that the nervous system decides there is no way to fight or to flee. At that point, there is only one option left: immobilization.
The immobilization response is the original biological defense in higher animals. It dulls pain and makes us feel disconnected. Think of some reptiles (爬行动物), which shut down their bodies to avoid cold temperatures and the lack of food and water. In humans, people often describe feeling “out of their bodies" during extremely unpleasant events, which has a defensive effect of reducing the emotional shock. This is important because some things are so terrible, we don't want people to be fully present when they happen. What incredible capacity of our biology to find a way in hard times!
32. Why does the author mention the Polyvagal Theory
A. To offer a standard for identifying depression.
B. To raise people's awareness of mental problems.
C. To make sense of how depression affects people.
D. To correct a commonly held idea about depression.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Depression can bring people in crisis hope.
B. People may feel it wrong to have depression.
C. Depression is an unnecessary human emotion.
D. People often feel proud of fighting depression.
34. What is “immobilization” in the text
A. Building up anxiety. B. Fighting for a crisis.
C. Shutting down action. D. Thinking abnormal.
35. In which order does our body react to an extremely unpleasant situation
①seek to work out solutions
②become aware of a threat
③suffer emotional shock
④start defensive disconnection
②③④① B.④②①③ C.②①③④ D.④①②③

Can you tell the difference between a glass of regular and diet soda No, you can't. 36 . That's where the trouble starts. Until recently, everything we have eaten contains some amount of calories.
So when we drink diet soda, the sweetness tricks our body into thinking it's real sugar but when those energy packed calories don't arrive, the insulin in our brain has nothing to store.
37 . It's called metabolic syndrome, which is a mix of conditions that include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar and weight gain which can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and strokes.
While drinking diet soda with the meal may sound like a tasty calorie free alternative to plain water, this may be the worst time to drink it because the cheating calories in the diet soda could finally destroy the real calories we metabolize. 38 .
Another problem could be the fact that artificial sweeteners in diet soda can be 10 to 100 times sweeter than sugar. 39 . It's like when you go to a party expecting loads of food and you end up with a handful of vegetables. You're left unsatisfied and hungry.
In the same way, artificial sweeteners can leave our brains wanting more, which leads to increased appetite and potential weight gain. 40 , maybe just stick to water.
A.As it turns out, neither can your body
B.No, this was diet soda and it was awesome
C.When you go to a party expecting loads of food
D.Drinking diet soda is associated with a disease
E.So if you're drinking diet soda to drop a few pounds

G.So when we taste it, our brains expect more calories than what we give it

When my little brother Tom was four, Mom said something like “I’d give anything to have a few more hours in the day.” And Tom said, “Why don’t we buy a bigger clock ” If time worked that way, I could have used an extra-big clock last week!
Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat, “I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh. “I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous—I wasn’t nervous at all. 1 love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box (手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I’d come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abucla’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o'clock when I finally got home.1 planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.

Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.”

应用文参考答案:
As we all know, the cooking lesson was started last autumn in primary and secondary schools nationwide, which has set off heated discussions in society. From my point of view, it was a big move and brought freshness to school.
Actually, most students have been focusing only on their studies, unable to do basic housework, and even never feeling grateful for what their parents have done for them.
Hopefully, through the cooking lesson, not only can the students develop their life skills, but also they can have a better understanding of the meaning of hard work. More importantly, the new lesson, to some extent, can help them build a strong character to tackle challenges and difficulties in life.
读后续写参考答案:
Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.” What Dad said was a hammer blow to me, leaving me into deeper anxiety. However, that was one of our family rules, so I had to do the dishes reluctantly. The clinking of dishes were disquieting sounds from hell to me, reminding me that the clock was ticking second by second. After I threw the last dish into the cabinet, I rushed into my bedroom, only to find that the hour hand had moved past ten. Without much time left, I finished the assignment in a hurry. The next day, I handed in it nervously.
Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days. My life seemed in a mess these days, arising from my loose attitude and chaotic schedule. My energy was segmented and occupied by some trivial matters which had nothing to do with my project. Out of guilt, I explained to my teacher and promised this would never happen again. After this experience, I eventually comprehended the importance of time, and began to arrange for my schedule with caution. With confidence, I was firmly convinced that I could get a satisfying score in the next assignment.
