A
Longing for the most amazing places on the planet You can do no wrong with these lakes across the globe.
Five Flower Lake
Set in the striking karst landscape of the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan Province, China, Five Flower Lake is extraordinarily clear, with visibility to a depth of 40 metres. Five Flower is one of a series of blue-, green- and sky-colored lakes blocked by rock falls, but it differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue. In winter, Five Flower never freezes; in summer, it never dries up. Local wildlife living in the surrounding mountain forests includes the rare giant panda and the golden snub-nose monkey.
Crater Lake
The deep-blue waters of Crater Lake in Oregon, US, fill the outlet of an ancient volcano that collapsed 7,700 years ago. Its strangest occupant is the "Old Man of the Lake", a nine-metre-tall tree stump(树桩), which has stood upright in the water for more than a century. No rivers or streams enter the lake. Water loss in summer is compensated(弥补) by winter snow and rain, the entire body of water being replaced every 250 years.
Lake Ohrid
Ancient Lake Ohrid has been around for about five million years and crosses the mountainous border between Macedonia and Albania. It has unique plants and wildlife, including the Ohrid "plashica", a fish native to the lake, whose scales(鳞片)are used to make Ohrid pearls.
Lake Maggiore
Surrounded on three sides by the Lipontine Alps and touching the plain of Lombardy to the south, Lake Maggiore is Italy’s longest lake. Considered part of the country’s lake district, it is shared with Switzerland. Characterized by a Mediterranean-style climate, temperatures here are mild all year. This has given rise to some of northern Italy’s most wonderful gardens, which appear to float like flower-decked boats on the water.
What makes Five Flower Lake different from other lakes
A. Its agreeable climate. B. The rare local wildlife.
C. Its color-changing waters. D. The visibility of waters. 2.How does Crater Lake mainly get water supply
A. By artificial rain. B. By snow and rain.
C. From nearby streams. D. From an ancient tree. 3.Which lake has a typical warm climate
A. Five Flower Lake. B. Crater Lake.
C. Lake Ohrid. D. Lake Maggiore.

Jeff Jensen, the business and Boy Scout leader, was in a dilemma and had painful damage in his leg and foot. He needed surgery, but he doubted whether he could afford it, even with insurance. "There’s nothing more depressing than seeing a bill for 24,000 dollars and going. How much of this will my insurance cover and how much is mine to cover " Jensen told WWAY-TV.
Luckily for Jensen, his doctor is Demetrio Aguila. The nerve specialist gives patients the option to pay for surgery through volunteer work. He founded an organization called M25 Program. "We can’t ignore the people in our own backyard, " Aguila told CBS. "We want to be able to offer hope to patients who have lost hope medically."
Using an algorithm ( 算法), the clinic calculates community service hours based on the price of the
surgery. In Jensen’s case, the $12,000 operation equaled 560 hours of helping out at one of the local charitable organizations registered with the M25 Program.
Like 10 percent of Aguila’s patients, Jensen chose the community service. And because hundreds of hours of community service can seem difficult, Aguila, 50, not only lets others participate, he encourages it. "I had this hope that we would reawaken in our neighbors and in ourselves a sense of volunteerism," he told CNN.
Jensen, whose surgery was completed in February 2020, was helped by more than 100 friends and strangers who volunteered at Orphan Grain Train, which donates food, clothing, and medicine nationally and globally.
Dave Harvey, founder of the homeless aid organization Least of My Brethren, is counted as one who is inspired by Aguila. "He is making things easier by sending volunteers our way!" he told KMTV in Omaha. "What a cool thing!"
What can a patient do if he can’t afford surgery according to the text
A. Seek aid from social media. B. Raise money in the hospital.
C. Join in the voluntary service. D. Turn to the insurance company. 5.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. People’s participation. B. The M25 Program.
C. Food donation. D. Medical assistance. 6.What’s Harvey’s attitude to Aguila
A. Cautious. B. Grateful.
C. Concerned . D. Doubtful.
Where is the text probably taken from
A. A local newspaper. B. A medical journal.
C. A clinic advertisement. D. An insurance brochure.

One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognize its benefits. It is a mistake to think we can make better decisions if we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision-making. Many researches show that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.
Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationships tend to be better at recognizing people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger approaches.
In the real world, though, it’s worth realizing that feeling anxious for a while is very common. It helps you communicate with others that you care about, and is also probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: if you’re a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future.
The important thing is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don’t bury your head in the sand. Instead, act on your fears — do research as well as preparation. So rather than walk blindly into what you fear, why not meet challenges in full readiness
There is no denying that when anxiety beats you, it is a serious problem. But you needn’t see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution(进化). Listen to it and act on it. Then you can turn your nervousness into your advantage.
What can we infer about anxiety from Paragraph 1
It enables us to be more focused.
It stops us from thinking logically.
It makes us more willing to take risks.
It contributes to bad decision-making. 9.What can be learned about anxious people
They bury their heads in the sand.
They score the highest in tests.
They tend to think about future.
They prefer to interact with strangers.
How should we deal with anxiety in the author’s opinion
By ignoring it completely.
By taking action to prevent it.
By regarding it as our enemy.
By making use of it properly. 11.What does the passage focus on
Effective ways to prevent anxiety.
Unexpected benefits of anxiety.
Tips on how to keep a good mood.
Misunderstandings about anxiety.
D
We often think that buying an artificial tree instead of a real one for Christmas will help the environment by not cutting down trees. However, this argument doesn’t consider the process of producing and disposing of the trees, during which a lot of CO2 emissions are being let off into the air. Actually, increased demand for real trees is helping the environment.
Artificial trees, when created, give out an average of 40 kg of CO2. To harvest a real Christmas tree, very little CO2 emissions are caused. If left to biodegrade(生物降解), a real tree will return to the earth in one to two years depending on conditions. An artificial tree, however, will take hundreds of years to
degrade, letting out more pollutants into the air. Further, even if an artificial tree is recycled, the process will continue to produce even more CO2.
Real trees do not have these problems. They can have positive effects on our health. When they are
near a window and regularly watered, they will produce clean oxygen which can improve health.
Undoubtedly, cutting down trees is bad for the environment, so what makes cutting down Christmas trees any different Christmas trees have specific farms where they are harvested, meaning that protected forests aren’t cut down, and, with every tree harvested a new one is planted. The trees aren’t harvested until they are between 10 and 12 years old and the farms always have trees growing while they’re harvesting this year’s trees.
If you have already used an artificial tree, the best thing you can do is keep using it year over year to save it from going to landfill.
What does Paragraph 1 say about artificial trees
They do no good to the environment.
They help fight against CO2 emissions.
The demand for them is on the increase.
The process of producing them is difficult. 13.How is Paragraph 2 organized
A. By listing data. B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples. D. By explaining different views. 14.What do we know about the real Christmas trees from the passage
Harvesting them needs great efforts.
They are harvested from protected forests.
Cutting them down almost causes no harm.
They have a bad effect on the environment. 15.What’s the purpose of the text
To inform us of the function of real Christmas trees.
To tell us the benefit of not keeping a Christmas tree.
To show artificial trees have less value than real trees.
To explain why real Christmas trees are environmentally-friendly.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。
Dreams won’t cost you anything. They are going to be with you forever, and require no effort on your part. Goals, however, require action. 16 Achieving a goal will cost you time, effort, money, and sacrifice. Research has found that one of the best ways to guarantee goals will be achieved is by writing them down. Here are four tips on how to write down goals.
Define your goals.
17 Your current situation will determine your next step. Then move on to write about where you would like to be in the future. What is your ultimate aim
Include, in the overall plan, the short-term goals that you will need to achieve during the journey, and, if possible, include a timetable.
18
Creating a timetable means you will have to think of the big picture. Now is your opportunity to allow yourself the luxury of dreaming. Turn that dream into a goal by giving it substance, and planning the route.
Your timetable for success will gradually come together, and you can decide where you want to be in, say, one year, five years, or ten years. Don’t fudge(含糊其词) it, be specific, and be ambitious.
Now, look at the detail.
Now that you have turned your dream into a goal, and decided on your path, turn to the short-term goals. Consider the short-term objectives you will need to achieve as you progress towards your ultimate goal. 19
Always be positive.
Make your plan positive. You will not be inspired if you use negative language. 20 List what you are going to do in positive tones that will encourage you and spur you on.
Having a plan brimful of confidence and heartening language will encourage you to achieve your ultimate goal.
In this, they have a cost.
Keep the big picture in mind.
Begin by deciding where you are at present.
Dreams are long-term and often stay as dreams.
Don’t say what you are not going to do any more.
So you have a clear idea of the steps you will need to take.
With all the tips in mind, now it is the time to create your grand plan.

Shama was sitting in the bedroom which she shared with her sister Dolly, watching the goldfish Peepy in the glass bowl. The goldfish swam round and round. For a while Shama did nothing except stare at it. The fish looked sad, Shama thought. It seemed unhappy being in the small bowl.
Just then she heard her mother call her and her sister Dolly for breakfast. Shama said to her mother. “It’s Sunday today. I want to go to the lake. We go there every Sunday.”
“We can’t go today, dear. A storm is coming. It’s dangerous.” Mom was always like that, concerned about safety of her kids. Shama made a face. Breakfast was over. Shama watched her mother washing the dishes. She loved the rushing sound of water. That was why she loved the lake too.
Mom said she didn’t feel well and wanted to have a sleep. She had gone to her bedroom. “Shama,” Dolly whispered, leaning as close to Shama as possible. “Let’s go.”
“Where ”
“To the lake, where else ” This was a surprise for Shama. It was a daring suggestion. “Mom doesn’t want us. There’s a storm coming.” Shama said in a whisper.
“No, there isn’t. Mom just doesn’t want us to go. Let her be fast asleep; then we’ll tiptoe out.” Hearing that, Shama’s face broke into a smile.
“Are you sure Mom will be mad if we get caught.”
“We’ll come back in time. Mom sleeps tight.” Dolly, gave a naughty smile.
It would be an adventure that both of them would slip out. It was a really exciting idea. Shama had never done such a thing before.
But the fact was that the door was locked by Mom. Dolly ran towards the window. The window wasn’t locked. She smiled and said, “That’s great!”
Dolly got back into her room and a few minutes later, she came out, holding a plastic bag filled with water. Peepy the goldfish was in it.
They took off their shoes and stood in the shallow water.大理州民族中学、怒江州民族中学2024届高三联考

Dear Jack,
I’m writing to share with you something about my recent school life. I love my school very
much, which is large and beautiful. Overall, my teachers and classmates are helpful and
enthusiastic.
Sometimes, I find it a little hard to deal with the tough learning environment. The knowledge
we are learning is obviously more difficult than before, especially English. Besides, with endless
assignments to do, I hardly spare time to do exercise and other activities. I feel greatly stressed.
Anyway, I’ll take every effort to make progress.
I would appreciate it much if you could give me some advice. Waiting for your early reply.

第二节(共 25分)
“Why did you bring Peepy ” Shama asked with wonder. “Don’t you think it is sad in the
small bowl It wants freedom, too.” Dolly replied firmly. Shama smiled happily. Holding the bag
tightly, Dolly climbed out of the window. Shama followed her sister carefully and they ran to the
lake joyfully.
They took off their shoes and stood in the shallow water. Feeling a warm current flowed over
the whole body, Dolly slowly opened the bag and set Peepy free. It wagged its tail as if to say
“Thank you!” and then swam away happily. Shama waved goodbye to Peepy, stepping out of the
lake. Worried that their mother would wake up, they quickly put on their shoes and went back
home. Mother had woken up. She didn’t blame them for setting the fish free, though. When asked
to keep safety in mind, the sisters promised not to go out without permission.
