Julia Butterfly Hill worked at a restaurant. For many years, she was only interested in making money. Then one day she had a serious car accident, which changed her life.Hill said,“I realized I wanted to find a more powerful purpose for being here on this planet.”
As soon as she recovered,Hill traveled to California and she wanted to do something meaningful. There she saw ancient redwood trees, which are the largest trees in the whole world. The wood from redwood trunks is very hard.So the Pacific Lumber Company cut down many of the huge redwoods to use for construction. There are not many forests of these trees left. Many environmental activists want to protect the remaining trees. The redwoods are very important to the environment.
In 2012,Hill learned a group called Earth First was working to protect a particular group of trees. They decided to send someone up into a redwood tree, hoping this would stop the company from cutting the trees down.Julia Butterfly Hill volunteered.

Finally, after years of arguing, the company decided to protect Luna, the tree Hill lived in.They signed an agreement to never cut down this huge redwood tree or the trees around it.When Hill put her feet on the earth again, she began to cry.But from that moment on Hill hasn’t stopped working to protect the environment.

Hua Sheng and Lu Sheng,a retired Tibetan couple, have become trailblazers(开拓者) of grape growing and winemaking in their old ages.
Lu Sheng learned grape planting and winemaking from her grandmother’s sister.Since they retired, the couple have moved to Lhasa from the village of Yakhadi.Though the fact that the region’s capital, which is 3,600 meters above sea level,is considered unfit for growing grapes,Lu Sheng and Hua Sheng began an ambitious project in 2015,planting grapes in Tsalna,a town in the suburb of Lhasa.
They received support from the local government, which is committed to developing business and the economy. The couple’s project provides jobs for rural residents, and,as a result, the government has considered the project part of its enrichment programs.
“Lhasa is an ideal place for planting French grape varieties that are resistant to cold, drought and disease, and adaptable to high-altitude and open-air planting,” Lu Sheng said.
“Thanks to the plateau’s sunshine and organic planting, our grapes grow very well here in Lhasa. The grapes are a bit sour and sweet, and they have a high anthocyanin(花青素) content,” she said.Anthocyanins, which accumulate(积累) in grape cells and contribute rich color to wine, are water-soluble.
In 2018,Hua Sheng and Lu Sheng expanded their project, planting on nearly 6.67 hectares. In order to familiarize Tibetan farmers with grape planting and winemaking, they taught the skills to local villagers.
“We have successfully taught the local farmers how to grow grapes and make wine over the three years. They now have a new source of income besides traditional farming and herding,” Hua Sheng said.
Yudron,a resident of Nam,said she was grateful to the grape planting project in her village, which has contributed to her income and quality of life.“After working in the vine-yards for years, now we know how to make wine.We drink both barley and grape wine now.We love grape wine more, though,as it is healthier.”

The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up.These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer.“The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Most people worldwide rely on herbal(药草的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But about 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to a report from the international conservation group Plantlife.Shortages have been reported in China,India,Kenya,Nepal,Tanzania and Uganda.
Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species(入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute.“Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability(可持续性),” the Plantlife report says,“Damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it,but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.
The solution, says the report’s author,Alan Hamilton,is to encourage local people to protect these plants.Ten projects ran by Plantlife in India,Pakistan,China,Nepal,Uganda and Kenya showed this method could succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.
“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton,“You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”
Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection.“Not nearly enough is being done.We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”
32.From the first two paragraphs,we can learn that .
A.millions of people are threatened with cancer
B.most countries see a shortage of herbal medicines
C.about two thirds of medicinal species will disappear
D.a number of medicinal species are in danger of extinction
33.The underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refers to .
A.pollution B.sustainability
C.over-harvesting D.other species’ invasion
34.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Protecting medicinal plants has a long way to go.
B.Local people don’t know how to protect medicinal plants.
C.Ghillean Prance is optimistic about medicinal plants’ future.
D.China has made great progress in protecting medicinal plants.
35.Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A.Low-cost Cancer Treatment
B.The Importance of Sustainability
C.Medicinal Plants Facing Extinction
D.Sustainable Development of the Environment

Protect the plants from wind.Wind can damage parts of the plants. It can also dry them out.Choose a location for your garden that has shelter from a building or make your own wind protection. 39 .
Water your plants regularly and put the water directly on the soil.It is best to water early in the morning. If you can’t water the plants in the morning, water them in the late afternoon or early evening. 40 .The water may dry up too fast and water droplets on leaves can burn them.

I was on a family vacation and our hotel was right beside the sea.I was reading my book by the beach one afternoon when I heard some noise nearby.Curiously,I put aside the book and joined the group of people near the edge of the sea.
I was struck by what I saw. There was a giant turtle(海龟) which was upside down! Four of its huge feet were waving crazily in the air,and its long wrinkled neck was stretching far out of its shell.A thick rope was tied around the turtle and the fisherman held onto the end of it.
Obviously, the turtle was trying to escape. Some standers-by were clicking their cameras enthusiastically, filming the exciting moment. The crowd was thrilled by the scene before them. One strongly-built man found a piece of wood on the sand, carried it towards the turtle and started pushing the turtle’s head with it.When the end of the wood touched the turtle’s head, the turtle took it into its mouth and chewed it up in an instant.
“Wow!” the crowd shouted.“Did you see that I’m glad it wasn’t my arm!” a person from the crowd exclaimed.“Wait till it gets sold and becomes turtle meat!” another joked and the crowd laughed.
Suddenly,I heard a boy’s screaming,“Cease torturing(折磨) it! Get away from the turtle!” We all turned and saw a boy and his father running toward where we were.“All of you are cruel for just standing there and doing nothing to save the turtle! Would you like it if you were forcefully taken away from your homes to be sold and tortured Animals deserve to be treated with kindness too!” the boy shouted at the group of adults standing on the beach.I sensed a slight change of mood in the crowd—a mixture of unease and anger.

第一节
Saturday,April 22,2023 Cloudy
This morning I visited the City Museum, which was impressive to me.
There are several exhibition rooms in the museum, including history, art, science and nature. It is like a book, providing a large amount of information for the visitors. From the things displayed, you can have a close look at the historical development and scientific inventions. The guide gave a vivid explanation for the exhibition. She told many interesting stories behind the things exhibited. Most of the visitors were middle-aged people.
I think it important for the young people to visit museums, which can broaden their horizons, helping them learn more about history and arts.
第二节
Embarrassed as the father was,he was not ashamed of his son.“I apologized for my son’s rudeness. He is just standing up for what he believes in,something that I taught him to do.Please let the turtle go,” he said, addressing the crowd.I could feel something in my heart stirring. Before I knew it,the words had flown out of my mouth,“The boy’s right! Let the turtle go!” The crowd started murmuring. To my surprise, one by one,I heard other voices joining in to let the turtle go.
The fisherman finally agreed to let the turtle go.With many keen eyes fixed on him,he untied the knot in spite of some reluctance. The instant the turtle was freed,it crawled immediately towards the vast sea.The air seemed to be still—there was no previous joking or laughing in the crowd. The crowd thinned. After witnessing the turtle swimming away gracefully in the sunset, the boy left hand in hand with his father, lips curving in a smile.Bathed in the setting sun,I was deeply touched.
