Bats are nature’s pest patrol. They consume large quantities of night flying insects, including some that annoy farmers. But habitat loss and climate change,as well as infectious diseases, are reducing bats’ ability to do their job.A new study adds another item to the list:wildfires. But not too many — too few.
In California’s Sierra Nevada ecosystem, bats have adapted to occasional wildfires. But fire-prevention policies have kept some areas unburned for unusually long periods, resulting in denser (更稠密的) forests with thicker undergrowth.“We wanted to see how these changes in how fires are burning might be influencing bat biodiversity,” says Zack Steel, who conducted the research.
Steel and his colleagues used microphones to count bats by recording their distinctive echolocation (回声定位) over four years at six sites in the Sierra Nevada.Three of the areas had recently endured fires, and three remained unburned.
Seventeen bat species call these forests home. The study revealed that eight of them tended to frequent the unburned patches, whereas 11 used the burned areas (some species visited both).“We expected to see Group A (the more open-habitat-adapted-species) benefiting from fire and Group B (the more clutter-adapted species) being negatively affected by fire, preferring the unburned areas,” Steel says.“But even some of those species were occurring more often in burned areas.”
“When there’s lots of variation in habitats after a fire, many species benefit in different ways,” says University of Connecticut biologist Andrew Stillman.“On the whole, the community becomes more diverse, and that’s a good thing for the landscape.”
Putting out wildfires early leads to some species losing out on food and resources.
“Fire is a natural part of the ecosystem, and many animals require the disturbance from fire to create the types of habitat that they need,” Stillman adds.“It demonstrates another negative consequence of keeping wildfires away from fire-adapted forests in California.”

26.What benefits the bats in Sierra Nevada ecosystem according to the study
A.Free of wildfires.
B.Variation in habitats.
C.Thicker forests.
D.Fire-prevention policies.
27.What’s the purpose of the text

Winter,a dolphin with an artificial tail, died on November 12,2021,whose story inspired a book and two heartwarming movies. The 16-year-old had been suffering from a terrible disease since November 1,2021.The doctors at Florida’s Clearwater Marine Aquarium (水族馆) tried several life-saving efforts but in vain.
“She’s the strongest little dolphin that I have ever met,and we learned so much from her and have been privileged to have 16 wonderful years with her,” Dr.Shelly Marquardt,a vet(兽医) of the aquarium stated.
Winter’s uplifting story began in December 2005 when her tail got caught in a crab trap line.Florida fisher Jim Savage released the little dolphin and rushed her to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. While the dolphin—fittingly named Winter — survived, her badly-injured tail had to be cut off.
Believing she would be unable to swim, the aquarium’s health experts placed the young dolphin on a special device in the water. However,Winter was not going to let a “minor” inconvenience like a missing tail get in her way.She began using her broken tail to swim from side to side. While seeing the stubborn dolphin moving was encouraging, doctors feared it would hurt her back.Fortunately, two experts at the Hanger Clinic heard about Winter’s sad situation and made her an artificial tail.
Winter gave hope to people worldwide, especially those living with disabilities.Grace Savage was one of them. The grandniece of the fisher who rescued the dolphin in 2005 suffers from infantile paralysis (小儿麻痹症).“She gives us inspiration to never give up,” Savage told FOX 13 during her 2019 aquarium visit.
28.What may have caused the death of Winter
A.The improper treatment. B.An incurable disease.
C.Her unbearable suffering. D.Her badly-injured tail.
29.What can we learn about Winter from the passage
A.Shelly offered immediate rescue to release her.
B.Jim Savage cut off Winter’s tail to save her life.
C.Winter was not discouraged by physical disability.
D.The vets in the aquarium made her an artificial tail.
30.Why is Grace Savage mentioned in the last paragraph
A.To show Winter’s positive effects on humans.
B.To recall the comments Grace made on Winter.
C.To prove the aquarium is a good place to visit.
D.To tell how Grace lived with disabilities bravely.
31.Which of the following can best describe Winter’s story
A.Adversity makes a man wise,not rich.
B.What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.
C.The greater the difficulty, the greater the glory.
D.All things in their being are good for something.

The fossil discovery in Victoria now shows that monk seals were widespread in Australasia in the past.
“Monk seals are one of the rarest and most endangered marine mammals (海洋哺乳动物) alive today, but this wasn’t always the case,” according to lead study author Dr.James Rule from Monash University.“Our paper shows that the very endangered monk seals once called Australia home about five million years ago (specifically in Victoria),” he said.
The discovery was made by studying two fossils again from Melbourne Museum’s collections, the identity of which had been a mystery for 40 years.“When we studied them, they turned out to be the oldest evidence of monk seals,” Dr.Rule said.“These fossils, along with the extinct New Zealand species that was discovered last year, double the known diversity of the monk seals,” he said.
According to Dr.Rule, monk seals disappeared in Australasia three million years ago,and they only lived in the tropics and the Mediterranean after temperatures fell during the Ice Ages. This left monk seals on the edge of disappearance after being overhunted by humans, with about 2,000 members left.
The discovery of New Zealand species and Australian monk seals led the researchers to restudy the origin of the group.“Our research shows that monk seals began in Australia,” Dr.Rule said.“This is different from every theory previously put forward by scientists.”
Previous research has theorized climate change led to the disappearance of many ancient seals in the Southern Hemisphere. This would have included New Zealand’s and Australian monk seals.“This suggests the world’s last two species of monk seal are also at risk from climate change,” Dr.Rule said.If sea level continues to rise, the beaches monk seals rely on for resting and raising young ones may disappear.
32.What does the new discovery show about monk seals
A.Their living habits. B.Their growth process.
C.Their early appearance. D.Their ways of getting food.
33.What do we know about the two fossils from Melbourne Museum
A.Researchers found it hard to keep them in good condition.
B.Researchers managed to identify them after many years.
C.They were once thought to be fossils of birds.
D.They were first discovered last year.
34.What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 4 probably refer to
A.Fighting water pollution. B.Suffering from a lack of food.
C.Having limited living places. D.Facing increasing natural enemies.
35.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph
A.Climate change always threatens monk seals’ survival.
B.Scientists can now measure the rate of global warming.
C.Human activity in Australia should be strictly limited.
D.People need to help raise young monk seals.

What Your Dog Is Really Thinking
Reading a pup’s body language requires experience and expert guidance.Zazie Todd,a dog trainer and founder of the blog Companion Animal Psychology, considers how to figure out the dogs’ behaviour.
If your dog licks its mouth
They’re stressed.Recently, two European studies have highlighted the meaning of this licking. One found that it was a dogs’ response to seeing an angry or aggressive human face on a computer screen. 36 .If you spot this sign, try reducing your dog’s stress levels. It could be as simple as giving them more physical space.
If there are fireworks and your dog is shaking
The noises are frightening. 37 .But a surprising number of people don’t realize that shaking and trembling (and hiding or seeking out people) are signs of fear.Whereas only a quarter of owners say their dog is afraid of loud noises, half report these behavioural signs.
 38
They’re anxious.Obvious signs of an unhappy dog include hiding or trying to leave the exam room, but commonly missed signs range from a tucked tail and lowered ears to trembling. If your dog gets stressed at appointments, ask what can be done. Many vets now use food to make the experience more fun.
If your dog leans into you during a petting session
39 .If you’re unsure whether a dog is enjoying being petted, stop, and then watch their reaction. If they choose to wander off,the session is over.Other signs of discomfort include smelling the floor, looking away and breathing heavily. However,if they lean on you or scratch at you to get more hugs, continue! 40 .
A.They like it
B.They hate it
C.This is a common reaction
D.If you’re at the vet and your dog’s tail is down
E.If your dog looks guilty when you walk in the door and see a mess
F.Preferred spots on their bodies are to either side of the chest and under the chin
G.The other determined that dogs lick their mouths —and also look away — in response to a mild threat

Global warming is pushing the population of polar bears to 56. (it) limit.According to a new study, they could have 57. (few) than 100 years left before extinction.
Polar bears live by hunting seals in the Arctic Ocean, but as more and more ice 58. (melt) in that region, their habitat continues to shrink.Since amounts began to be 59. (precise) measured at the end of the 1970s,sea ice that lasts for more than a year in the Arctic has decreased at a rate of 13% per decade.
Studies show that 60. (decline) sea ice will lead to a reduction in polar bears. They will be unable to bear the effects of climate change over the next several decades, the scientists believe, and will be wiped out by 2100.
“What we’ve shown is that, first,we’ll lose the 61. (survive) of bear cubs.Although cubs will be born, the female bears won’t have enough body fat to produce milk 62. (bring) them along through the ice-free season,” said Dr.Steven Amstrup, chief scientist of Polar Bears International,to the BBC.
The study comes 63. the conclusion that, even in a situation 64. countries achieve a moderate reduction in greenhouse gases, several populations of polar bears will disappear. But Amstrup said,“The animal can still continue to survive if we have 65. urge to keep climate change little.”

In July of 2021,Julia,a curious 5-year-old little girl, followed her dad into the unforgiving and dangerous Siberian wilderness near their home located in the remote region of the Sakha Republic.
At first,Julia’s mother May believed Julia had gone with her father to visit her grandma.Unfortunately, the area they lived in was so remote that it did not have cell phone service,so she could not call her husband to confirm. It was only after her husband returned two days later that they realized Julia had made her way into the thick forest unnoticed and became lost.
Panicked and concerned,Julia’s family instantly called for help.It wasn’t long before hundreds of people showed up to seek the girl.Rescue workers, police, firefighters, and volunteers searched like crazy for the girl. They also got the aid of six search dogs, and a helicopter with technology to look for Julia in the dark but with no luck after a day’s search.
Julia’s family feared the worst, primarily since the area was well known for wild animals such as wolves and bears. Not to mention the fact that it was Siberia, which meant it got bitterly cold at night. Many of the rescuers were forced to face the reality that the girl was most likely dead. They knew a small child wouldn’t last long out in the cold with little to protect her.
Early in the next morning, the police officer David who was in charge of the search hurried to Julia’s house to ask May for more details. It suddenly occurred to May that a neighborhood dog, which Julia named Nadia, would probably follow her into the forest.
“Julia spares her food and feeds Nadia every day and gradually Julia has developed a close bond with the wandering dog. They are attached to each other and always inseparable. They must be together now, aren’t they ” May looked into David’s eyes and asked eagerly.

Good evening, and welcome to the British Council. My name is John Parker and I’ve been asked to talk to you briefly about certain aspects of life in the UK before you actually go there. So I’m going to talk first about the best ways of making social contacts there. Now you might be wondering why it should be necessary. After all,we meet people all the time. But when you’re living in a foreign country it can be more difficult, not just because of the language, but because customs may be different. If you’re going to work in the UK you will probably be living in a private house,so it won’t be quite so easy to meet people. But there are still things that you can do to help yourself.First of all,you can get involved in activities in your local community, join a group of some kind. For example, you’ll probably find that there are theatre groups who might be looking for actors, set designers and so on.Or if you like the idea of finding out about local history there’ll be a group for that too. These are just examples. And the best places to get information about things like this are either the town hall or the public library.Libraries in the UK perform quite a broad range of functions nowadays—they’re not just confined to lending books, although that’s their main role of course.

第一节
Dear schoolmates,
International Day for Biological Diversity is on 22nd,May every year.I am writing to appeal to conserving creatures in the world.
As we know from this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity, there are ten endangered plants. The key reason for the extinction is that we human beings are always polluting too much and over destroying forests for fuel.To save the world’s creatures,we should advertise low-carbon life.
We sincerely advocate that we go to school on foot or by bike as much as possible every day.Furthermore,we had better make sure people are informed of the danger of creatures’ extinction.

第二节
David was about to reply when a dog ran into the house.“It’s Nadia.” May exclaimed in surprise, racing over and holding Nadia’s neck.Exhausted and out of breath, the dog bit May’s sleeve and signed to her to follow it.“Nadia must know where Julia e on!” David said firmly.May picked up a blanket and hurried to set out with David. With Nadia leading the way through the forest, they eventually entered a secret cave.
In the cave lay Julia, still alive.“Julia!” Covering Julia with the blanket,May called Julia constantly, but Julia was too weak to speak.David instantly carried her outside onto the helicopter he had contacted.Julia was saved in time and then told the whole story. The first day she wandered in the forest with Nadia, she got lost and hid in the cave.Nadia got her some fruit and tried to keep animals at bay. When Julia learned it was Nadia that returned to bring help back, her face lit up with happiness and gratitude.
