第四部分 专题二 第1讲
(2023·安徽省合肥市高三一模)
Sam, Wayne and Tim were three men in their 60s, jamming in the same dusty old garage where they used to play music when they were in high school. They chatted up after ages, remembering the school days when they would take to the stage and play together as a band.
Wayne looked around, wide-eyed.“It's been more than 40 years since we practised here.”
“Yes! And remember how we promised to keep in touch and play together once a week?” Tim laughed.“Sam, remember our brilliant plans?”
“Ah yes! We thought we were inseparable! Now, look at us! Old and wrinkled, joints hurting, meeting at each other's grandkids' weddings...we're terrible at keeping in touch, except Will, of course. He was always calling and messaging.Where is Will He's the guy who planned this,” Sam smiled.
Just then, the three men's phones buzzed (嗡嗡地响), and the message they received made their hearts sink.It was a message from Jenny, Will's wife.Wayne rushed to his car, and the others followed.A short drive later, the three men knocked on the door of Will's house and tried to wait patiently.
Jenny looked almost unrecognizably pale and told them that Will was taking a nap.The medicines made him all weak.It moved the three men to tears to see their fourth band member in such poor health.
And that day, they found out the whole story of Will's illness. Will's heart condition was serious, and it had been worsening over the past few months. The doctor said only a surgery could help. But it was going to cost at least $15,000.And after all the previous treatments, Will and Jenny didn't have that kind of money anymore.Jenny said the doctors had given Will 6 months, bursting into helpless tears. The three men comforted her and wiped their own tears.“Money isn't an issue,” Sam said as an idea came to him.

Paragraph 1:
The next day the three men brought their instruments to the busy street corner. They set up the sound, a stand with the band name “Playing for Will” and a big stack of flyers to hand out.The men stood there for hours, playing song after song from the golden era of music. They were still perfect together, except for Will's soulful voice that was missing.Although they were very busy, they were very happy to think of collecting money for Will.
Paragraph 2:
Will was finally admitted to hospital three months later. With enough money, they paid for Will's life-saving surgery. The doctors were highly qualified and the surgery was very successful. Will soon recovered smoothly. Will and Jenny were very grateful to their three friends. After that, there was another jamming session at the same dusty old garage.Only this time, there weren't just three happy old men reminiscing the old days; there were all four.It seemed like yesterday once more.第四部分 专题二 第2讲 技法一

One day my mother and I were out having a girls' day, and we decided to go to a seafood restaurant. We got there just as the lunch rush started, so there was a line to get in.I looked over to the side and spied a very thin lady with no coat and a chemo shunt (化疗分流器) in her arm.She was holding a sign that read: “Homeless and hungry. Please help.”
I looked around at everyone, and no one looked like they cared in the least.I knew that if I didn't do something, I will be regretful forever.I went over to her and asked if she would like to come out of the cold and get something to eat.She looked for a second like she was unsure I was talking to her.She put her head down and said in the lowest voice, “Yes.”
I helped her to her feet and walked her up to my mother, who was in line.We stood there together until we were seated. When the waitress came, she asked what we wanted to eat but completely ignored this woman and acted like she didn't exist.
Then the owner came over and asked if we wanted this woman to sit at our table.I assured her we did.She then asked what her name was, to which I replied that we hadn't gotten to ask that yet.
Then she said something that put me over the top.She said, “Well, you did right by getting her food instead of giving her money.”
This was the last straw for my mother and me.I talked loud enough for everyone to hear when I told her, “This woman is sitting right here. She is not invisible, and she is not deaf. She is just as good as anyone in here, and I will not allow her to be treated any differently than any other customer in here.”

Paragraph 1:
I called the waitress back over and told her to take the woman's order. She ordered a cup of coffee. After the waitress left, we got to talking, and I found out that her name was Judy. She had no children and her husband passed away last year. What's worse, she developed cancer and lost her house because of the treatment expenses. She could not find a job.She was supposed to get a ride to a shelter, but the treatment took her too long, and she missed the bus.
Paragraph 2:
We promised to give her a ride to the shelter when we had the meal. I said to her that she was sure to win her battle with cancer and got back on her feet. She was moved and thanked me in a quiet voice, looked down, and started eating. After we ate, I left the waitress her tip on the receipt and wrote “Kindness costs nothing.” If you are ever given the opportunity to help someone in need, do it.The feeling you get out of it is worth more than you'll ever know. It's priceless.第四部分 专题二 第2讲 技法二

High-school sports is the biggest thing that happens in our town of Verden, population six hundred.Sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes. So I shouldn't have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls' basketball team, but I was worried because she has Down syndrome(唐氏综合症).My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different, treating her like our other children.
“I'm gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren flew into my arms when I came in from work.“That's nice, honey,” I replied automatically and patted her, figuring she meant outside—on the driveway.
Walking into the kitchen, I met my wife Laura, whose frown indicated I'd missed something.Laura spoke slowly, her tone steady.“She meant she's joining the girls' high-school basketball team.”
Just as her words sank in, I heard Lauren behind me.“I'm gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she yelled, skipping into the room and throwing her arms in the air.Everything that could happen flashed through my mind.I discussed Lauren's announcement with my wife that evening and finally agreed. After all, there were only 11 girls, not everyone willing to play.
The next afternoon, I parked in front of the school gymnasium.Inside, Coach Forsythe greeted us, “We're glad Lauren came out for the team. She is not just a cheerleader!” Lauren stood alone at the other end of the court, shooting free throws. No other girl on the court grinned(咧嘴笑) like Lauren did, and after every shot, Lauren approvingly cried, “Woo hoo!”, seemingly not caring if she made the basket or not.
Mid-November, the season's first basketball game arrived.I settled into a seat with the rest of my family. The game got off to a good start, but soon Lady Tigers was behind.Lauren followed the movement on the court and reacted to every play.Even though Lauren wasn't playing, she looked as if she were having the time of her life.I felt admiration for my daughter.Plus, her team was getting beat, yet she still enjoyed the action.Just less than two minutes left, and Lady Tigers was down by seventeen points.

Still in high spirits, Lauren cheered for Lady Tigers off the court.Just at that time, Coach called a time-out.He walked over to Lauren and said something to her, then something to her teammates. In a minute, Lauren was in the game.My heart doubled its beat, watching wide-eyed.Just then, all across the stands, fans were on their feet clapping for Lauren. Our Lauren! Lauren kept pace with the others fairly well. The visitors scored again. With less than a minute left, Lady Tigers was controlling the ball.I saw the point guard shout and flash a signal to her teammates.
Then a teammate passed Lauren the ball. She caught it and moved toward the goal.Amazingly, the opposing team did not block her.She shot. She scored! “Lauren, Lauren, Lauren,” chanted the cheerleaders. At length, Lady Tigers lost by seventeen points.Several minutes later, Lauren joined us, “Did you see I made a basket!” For sixteen years, I'd tried hard to keep Lauren from feeling like she was different. But from this, I saw she really was different—not physically or emotionally, but spiritually.I wrapped my arms around her tightly.Lauren was different. And I was glad.第四部分 专题二 第2讲 技法三

During the past two years, I felt down from time to time, especially when I stayed indoors. To get out of the house, I decided to teach myself how to skate again even though it had been more than 30 years since I had been on the ice.Little did I know, I would also be teaching myself how to rise to the challenges I'd soon face in life, too.
I dug out my old figure skates, but they didn't work.So I ordered a new pair of skates and found a place to get them sharpened.I assumed it would be easy to pick up from where I had left off, so I reserved our ice time.Armed and ready, I was awake before the online reservation system opened to secure spots at my neighborhood rink (滑冰场).I even convinced my son to join me for my first go.
Filled with fear, I estimated there was a five-centimeter drop down from the walking ledge (台子) to the ice and nothing nearby to grab onto in order to keep my balance. My son was already circling around but skated over to offer his arm for support.
I climbed down, one skate at a time and my leg shook slightly when both feet landed on the ice.
“Can I hang onto you for the first few minutes?” I asked my son nervously.I took baby steps but I had forgotten how to glide (滑行).Eager to see how far I could go, I let go of my son's arm.
With great efforts, I began to do slow laps, inching ahead with my skates and staying close to the rink boards.
I avoided falling on my first attempt but as I walked home silently with my son, I wondered whether I should quit.Fear had held me back and I hadn't given it my all.
“You used to skate so well, what happened?” asked my son.
“Life got in the way.”

But I did not cancel my future reserved ice times. I believed that through continuous practice, I could skate very well, just like before. In the following days, I practiced at the ice rink every day.I experienced countless falls.I felt frustrated and wanted to give up.But in the end, I convinced myself and persisted. My son always encouraged me.He believed that I could do it.And he said that I was his pride. As time went by, I got better and better at skating.
Paragraph 2:
After some progress was made, I decided to sign up for adult learn-to skate lessons the following winter. I wanted to continue challenging myself.I wanted to enrich my life.I wanted to skate freely and made my mind and soul active. The same goes for facing challenges in life.I'd soon face many challenges in life. But I should not feel discouraged and afraid.I should actively and bravely face it.I believe that as long as I take the first step and make continuous efforts, I will eventually overcome all difficulties.第四部分 专题二 第2讲 技法四

When I found out that my new friend Karina did not share my opinions about some stuff, I was very upset. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything because when we first met, we got along so well.It was as if we'd known each other forever.
“No way!” I said, as I sat next to her on the first day of karate (空手道) camp.“Are those banana chips in your lunchbox?”
“You like banana chips?” she said in a surprised voice.“They're my favorite snack.”
“My aunt brought some the last time she visited, and I've been craving (渴望) them ever since,” I said.
“I guess today's your lucky day,” she said, handing me the bag.“We have a big box that's kind of taking up space in the cupboard. So, you'd actually be helping me out!”
Right then is when I knew that Karina and I were meant to be friends forever.Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other.Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. The more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were.We both had two adorable cats, we both had an awesome younger sister, and we both had the same favorite song.
But then something happened.Karate camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of large old trees on it.Whenever it was nice out, we'd get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees.
After we finished lunch, our coach, Miguel, reminded us to keep the forest as clean and perfect as it was when we got here.
And that's when things got complicated.
Sam, one of our teammates, asked us, “Have you guys heard that shopping mall rumor They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.” To my surprise, Karina said, “My parents told me the shopping center would make new jobs for people who really needed work and people's jobs were more important than trees.”

Paragraph 1:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees.Since trees were home to hundreds of small animals, I couldn't believe that Karina could be such a cruel person who wanted to replace the lively forest with a noisy shopping mall.Overwhelmed by anger and confusion, I shouted at Karina, “How dare you wish to destroy such a wonderful forest?” Shocked by my mean words, Karina stared at me in horror and failed to say a word. After a while, Karina broke the silence, telling me the story of her parents.
Paragraph 2:
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did. Her parents had suffered from unemployment for a long time and could hardly support the family, so she understood the importance of jobs deeply.“But I just want to save our wonderful land,” I explained in a low voice, feeling sorry and guilty.Gently patting me on the shoulder, Karina comforted me, “That's fine.” It suddenly dawned on me that a friend was not the same person as me, but a person who accepted me.I smiled at Karina, and invited her to hang out, after which our laughter soon lingered in the beautiful land again.第四部分 专题二 第2讲 技法五

I still remember the day when we decorated the house, I was ten and it was two weeks before Christmas.I was looking forward to my presents.Since I'm the youngest in the family, all of the family members would give me a gift one way or another.Sometimes it was a cookie or a hug but it was always there.I was the only center of attention and it was feeling good.
My uncles usually would ask me what I wanted before Christmas and that year I knew what I wanted. It was the spaceship I saw in the ads.I was dreaming of opening a big gift box, and it was there. But that year it came in a way that I wasn't expecting.
It was two weeks before Christmas.Just two weeks. She couldn't wait.My dear mother told my father that it was time, and then we went to the hospital. After an hour, they told me that I had a sister now.But I didn't want a sister.I wanted a spaceship. The next few days went so fast.No one was caring about me.Everyone was talking about her and I knew that my life is never going to be the same ever again.I wasn't ready to grow up, to be a big brother. But it just happened in an instant.
On the day before Christmas, everyone was in our home, talking only about my newborn sister. My family was becoming hers.Even my uncles didn't ask me anything about the gift. She stole everything I'd ever had, my life and my presents.Thinking about this, I cried to sleep.I had a nightmare (噩梦) and woke up at the middle of the night.Shadows were all around me, and I was defenseless and so weak.I ran into my parents' bedroom but couldn't wake up my poor parents who were just too worn out.I was standing near their bed, trying not to cry when I saw her.She was awake and looking at me with her big eyes in her small bed.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a long shadow came into the bedroom and she started crying. Panic at first, I then realized that it was just a car passing by.But she felt uneasy, her mouth wide opening, arms waving, and legs kicking.I thought she might be scared too, so I held out my hand to hold hers, patting her on the back with the other.I even moved a bit closer to her little bed, whispering my favorite song to her ears, just as my mum did when I got scared.Surprisingly, she seemed to understand me and stopped crying.Looking into her big eyes, I breathed a sigh of relief.
Paragraph 2:
After having comforted her, something slowly changed inside me. The sense of loneliness was replaced by the responsibility of being an elder brother.Even though her arrival took over the center of the whole family initially, she started to become the center of my attention too. With her cute round face and sparkling eyes, she also won my love and care for her.I looked around and found my parents, awake, smiling at me.With a shadow of a happy family cast on the window, I felt my little sister was the best gift I'd ever got.

Ezri and Oliver were so keen to climb the mountain that they begged to join their dad Brandon for another hike.Just after 8 a.m.on a beautiful Sunday morning, they set off.Brandon's backpack held his phone, Clif bars (能量棒), packets of apple sauce, apples, water bottles and fishing gear.
Brandon had planned a varied route up the mountain. The winding upward slope was fun and uneventful.Near the top, thick snow blanketed the path.Excitedly, the kids raced across the hard surface. They shared the second-last Clif bar and rested for an hour.Brandon looked around. His phone showed 1?30 p.m.and no signals.
When the kids started down, Brandon said, “You guys really want to find those fishing lakes, don't you?”
“Oh, yes!” Ezri said.So they took an unfamiliar route down the other side of the mountain.
By the time Brandon realized the path had become an animal trail alongside a stream, it made sense to keep following it.The stream sang to them, and they kept following it down.Mid afternoon, when the sun disappeared behind heavy gray clouds, they suddenly felt lost, cold and hungry. For half an hour they cautiously moved downward until they reached a steep cliff (悬崖) edge. The stream became a noisy, six-metre waterfall.Mist enveloped them as the water raced over a huge rock.
Brandon cursed (咒骂) himself for taking an unknown route down. They held hands and inched down until Oliver slid on a loose rock and all three went flying.
Brandon wiped blood from his forehead and gathered his senses. Was anyone hurt Oliver, crying and shivering, seemed okay.Ezri was weeping, but she too appeared uninjured.Brandon himself didn't feel anything worse than the wound on his forehead. The backpack was stuck in the rocks six meters away.He saw no use trying to find it back. The air was cold and getting colder. They were wet and tired.

As a teenager, I couldn't stand seeing a photo of my nose in profile.I hated how big it was and, if people praised me for my looks, I always felt it was in spite of the most noticeable feature on my face.
I was about to accept that I would never fully see my nose as beautiful when I met Nicholas Baldion, an artist, in a London pub, and asked him to paint my portrait.I regretted this the second I arrived for my sitting.I had forgotten that Baldion would have to spend hours staring at my biggest insecurity, and then painstakingly translating it onto canvas.
The first sitting was hard.I could not shake the feeling of wanting to turn my head to face the front.I hated the fact that Baldion was openly and carefully examining the one feature I had spent years trying to hide.Yet, as the two-and-a-half-hour sitting went on, I calmed down and began to accept my feelings.I had put myself in this situation, so now I just needed to sit in it.By the second sitting, I was almost excited—not just by the thought of having an afternoon when I had an excuse to do absolutely nothing, but because it had finally sunk in that I was having my portrait done.

Middle school is a rough period of life for many of us.And it can feel like the end of the world if you're the target of school's mean girls.
Jennifer knew this feeling all too well. When she was in middle school, she was often teased by other kids. Her classmates made fun of her social awkwardness and unfashionable clothes. Then the bullying escalated (升级) to a whole new level in seventh grade when three girls started targeting Jennifer almost every day.
“They would wait for me in the hallway at the end of class so that they could start picking on (欺负) me right away,” Jennifer said.“And they would corner me in this area of the school called ‘the draw off’ where they would kind of form a ring around me and insult me.”
Jennifer didn't know what to do to defend herself. So, she'd just repeat back what the girls said to her.
The rest of the school year went on like this.Jennifer's grades suffered.During the summer between seventh and eighth grade, the ringleader of the group that had targeted her transferred to another school.“I did hold out some hope that this might mean that eighth grade could be different,” Jennifer said.
That hope lasted just a few days into the new school year when Jennifer discovered that the group had a new ringleader—Anna, who had just moved to Jennifer's school. The bullying quickly resumed (重新开始), and it seemed like eighth grade would be much like seventh.
But about six weeks into the school year, something happened.Jennifer was in the locker room, and she was by herself because she had waited for everyone else to leave so she could change in private.Just then, she heard a voice. It was Anna.

Jennifer felt a knot form in her stomach. She guessed that it was another bullying.Instead, she stayed quiet and waited for Anna to continue.“Look,” Anna said, “I know we've had our differences, but I think it's time for us to put all that behind us.We're going to be in this school together for another year, and I don't want things to keep going this way.” Jennifer was surprised. She had expected Anna to continue the bullying rather than her making amends. But she also knew that she wanted things to change. She didn't want to spend another year being bullied and feeling like an outsider.“I'm looking forward to changes,” Jennifer murmured.“Good,” Anna said.“I am too.”
Paragraph 2:
After that moment in the locker room, Jennifer's whole experience of school changed. Over the next few weeks, Anna and Jennifer slowly started to relieve the relationship. It wasn't easy, for they still had their differences, but they both made efforts to be kind to each other.Slowly but surely, the rest of the group followed their leader.By the end of the school year, Jennifer was amazed at how things had changed. Now, looking back, Jennifer knows that even small acts of kindness and understanding can lead to big changes.

Almost every childhood memory I have is centred on food.Telling stories around a crowded table at holiday dinners, the smell of roasting vegetables, the sensation (感受) of heat coming from the kitchen, all picture a familiar feeling of love and comfort.
My favourite memory of all is of my grandparents making and baking bread together. To this day, I have never tasted bread that is as delicious as theirs. No other loaf has ever been made with that kind of powerful, unconditional love.
When our son Brian, one of seventh graders, began to refuse usual communication with me, I felt desperate. How I missed those lovely old days when he couldn't wait to tell me his stories in kindergarten the moment I arrived home without getting changed! And there were also times when he brought loads of storybooks to me and demanded to be told all the stories before going to bed.But I didn't know since when everything changed. There was hardly any sharing about his daily school life with friends or any trouble about his schoolwork. Most of the time, his bedroom door was closed. The cold silence between us seemed to warn me that love between us began to fade.
At that time, like most mothers, I couldn't focus on work and couldn't sleep well. Why did things go off track so much Was it because my work took away most of my energy that family love was taken for granted Was it because my only precious spare time went too much to my two-year-old baby daughter that Brian's need for my company was ignored The more I reflected, the more I felt myself to blame and it was my responsibility to find a way out.
One day, as my eyes landed onto the bread on the kitchen table, I was reminded of those sweet childhood memories, “Could food help us make a change?” I wondered.

That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice's bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird?” “Of course, you can,” said her mother.“But you need to wait because I've no time to visit a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room.In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling.“Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily.“It's a birthday gift for you,” said her mother.“Thank you, Mom.I love it so much!” said Dora excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day.Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to stay at home.In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her.Dora felt very sad.How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She'd better stay alone.Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn't seem to be happy either.

Paragraph 1:
Dora watched her bird in silence. She found her bird kept looking out of the window. In the trees outside, many birds were playing gladly. She thought that perhaps her bird didn't like being kept in the cage at all.Just as she missed staying with her friends, it also wanted to go out to play like other birds. But before she got sick, she didn't think a lot about her bird. Now Dora realized she shouldn't selfishly take away its freedom for her own enjoyment.
Paragraph 2:
She decided to let go of the bird. When her mother came inside, Dora told her mother about her decision. She said, “Mom, can you set my bird free?” Her mother was surprised and asked why.“I'm sure it also wants friends,” said Dora. Her mother agreed. She opened the cage and the bird cheerfully flew out of the window and disappeared soon.A few days later, Dora could play with her friends again. How excited she was! And when she looked out at the birds in the trees, she knew her bird must be very happy at that moment.

I feared going into my room after school.Every day it was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my private room.Today can be no different.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong.Still, I wouldn't believe.Yesterday, I discovered a chocolate cookie spread around the mouth of my angel statue. Its pink lips were covered in chocolate.Obviously, Callie had shared her cookie with my angel.
I looked around for my little sister, Callie, who had just turned three.I didn't see her.As I checked the sitting room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all around. There were a few headless dolls, some blocks, the remains of a grape stuck into the carpet.I searched around and there she was, sitting on the sofa with the TV remote in her sticky hands. She looked up and saw me.A huge smile broke out on her face, and she laughed, clapping her hands.I was surprised that they didn't stick together.
“Sissy (sister)!” She jumped off the sofa and ran to me, hugging my knees and almost tipping me over.“Hi, Callie,” I said, with the slightest smile.I ruffled (抚弄) her long thick hair, and some white crumbs (残渣) fell to the carpet.“Cheese, sissy”, Callie said, pointing at the crumbs that had settled onto the carpet.I found a strong smell of cheese from them.Had Callie focused on destroying only the sitting room A voice raced across my mind.No way.Not my sister, the destroyer. Not my sister, the three-year-old terror.I turned around and started the scared climb to my room.

Paragraph 1:
I pushed the door open and saw a complete mess again! My bed and desk were fully covered by white crumbs, and the walls were full of grape juice graffiti. What's worse, I discovered cheese spread around the mouth of my angel statue whose pink lips were covered in cheese.I was completely shocked.Filled with anger, I was unable to utter a single word.So angry was I that I shook my fist at her.The moment she saw my reaction, she froze with fright, as if rooted on the ground. All of a sudden, she burst into tears.
Paragraph 2:
Seeing the tears in her eyes, I bent down and lifted her up gently. “It's OK.Callie, no matter what you do, I will love you forever. You are such a good girl, for it is your creative imaginations that give me surprises every day.Thank you!” I kissed her on her face, ruffling her long thick hair.On hearing that, her eyes widened with excitement and her mouth opened.“Sissy (sister)! I love you too.” She said heartily, and the smile on her face shone like a diamond.
