We live in a town with three beaches. There are two parts less than 10 minutes’ walk from home where neighborhood children gather to play. However, what my children want to do after school is pick up a screen — any screen — and stare at it for hours. They are not alone. Today’s children spend an average of four and a half hours a day looking at screens, split between watching television and using the Internet.
In the past few years, an increasing number of people and organizations have begun coming up with plans to counter this trend. A couple of years ago film-maker David Bond realized that his children, then aged five and three, were attached to screens to the point where he was able to say “chocolate” into his three-year-old son’s ear without getting a response. He realized that something needed to change, and, being a London media type, appointed himself “marketing director from Nature”. He documented his journey as he set about treating nature as a brand to be marketed to young people. The result was Project Wild Thing, a film which charts the birth of the World Network, a group of organizations with the common goal of getting children out into nature.
“Just five more minutes outdoors can make a difference.” David Bond says. “There is a lot of really interesting evidence which seems to be suggesting that if children are inspired up to the age of seven, then being outdoors will be on habit for life.” His own children have got into the habit of playing outside now: “We just send them out into the garden and tell them not to come back in for a while.”
Summer is upon us. There is an amazing world out there, and it needs our children as much as they need it. Let us get them out and let them play.
24. What is the problem with the author’s children

How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision The answer for many of us, it turns out, is “hardly any”, even when spending a lot of money. Most people make two trips or fewer to a dealership before buying a car. We are not necessarily conserving (节约) our resources to spend them on bigger decisions either. One in five Americans spends more time planning their upcoming vacation than they do on their financial future.
To be sure, some people go over every detail exhaustively before making a choice, and it’s certainly possible to overthink things. But there are also people who are quick to jump to conclusions. This way of thinking is considered a “cognitive bias (认知偏差)”, a term psychologists use to describe a tendency toward a specific mental mistake.
In our own research, we have found that hasty judgments are often just one part of larger error-prone patterns in behavior and thinking. We’ve also found that people who tend to make such “jumps” in their reasoning may experience a wide range of costs.
To study jumping to conclusions, we worked with more than 600 people from the general population. . Because much of the work on this bias comes from studies of schizophrenia (精神分裂症), we borrowed a thinking game used in that area of research.
In this game, players encountered someone who was fishing from one of two lakes: in one lake, most of the fish were red, and in the other, most were gray. The fisher would catch one fish at a time and stop only when players thought they could say which lake they were fishing in. Some players had to see many fish before making a decision. Others, the jumpers, stopped after only one or two.
We also asked participants questions to learn more about their other thinking patterns. We found that the fewer fish a player needed to see, the more errors he or she made in other beliefs, reasoning and decisions.
What our research and other recent studies show is that sometimes the most important decision can be when you choose to spend time considering before deciding. Even gathering just a little bit more evidence may help you avoid a major mistake.
28. Why does the author ask the question in the first paragraph
A. To raise a controversial issue. B. To introduce the author.
C. To develop a new concept. D. To lead to the topic.
29. Which of the following people may have a cognitive bias
A. A person who always regrets making a decision.
B. A person who buys a coat when seeing it at first sight.
C. A person who checks every detail before buying a car.
D. A person who suffers from the disease of schizophrenia.
30. What conclusion can we draw from the thinking game
A. Participants in the game are from a specific hospital.
B. The jumpers tend to make more mistakes in reasoning.
C. The fish in the two lakes were equal in number.
D. The fisher helped participants make correct decisions.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To advise people to think twice before making decisions.
B. To analyze the reasons for jumpers making quick decisions.
C. To explain the concept of a cognitive bias.
D. To provide some tips for people to make correct decisions.
D
If you ask most people whether they like having more choices, the answer will be yes. But when it comes to sales, a large selection can actually hurt the sellers’ income.
Although people like choice, they become overwhelmed (不知所措) by it. Hick’s Law perfectly proves this. It states that there is a measurable increase in how long it takes somebody to make a decision as the number of options that are available goes up.
That delay in decision-making can prove damaging on an online shopping site because it tends to result in users giving up. They are paralyzed by the decision, and so, they decide to go away and think about it. That will significantly reduce the number of people who eventually make a purchase.
I know it can be hard to convince sellers to limit the variety of products or complex options they offer on their sites, but there is some strong evidence to support your cause. Researchers in California ran an experiment in a local grocery store. They set up a stall in the store selling jam. Some days the stall would sell six flavors of jams, while on other days it offered 24 varieties. The results were significant. On days when they sold 24 varieties, they saw a mere four percent sales rate. However, when they offered only six choices, that figure rose to a surprising 31 percent. Limiting choice works.
That experiment perfectly shows both the problem and the solution. Despite the evidence, you will not always be able to persuade sellers to reduce choice. The next best option is to hide some of those choices.
Unlike a stall in a grocery store, we have more flexibility online regarding how products are displayed. We can highlight some options and hide others. For example, you could display the best-selling categories of products, while hiding other groupings under something like a “more” option. If you are unable to remove options, you can at lease focus clients’ attention on the most popular choices.
32. What does Hick’s Law mainly tell us about more choices
A. They increase product sales.
B. They lead to better decisions.
C. They can better satisfy customers.
D. They make decision-making harder.
33. What does the underlined word “paralyzed” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Attracted. B. Prevented. C. Controlled. D. Encouraged.
34. What do we learn from the experiment in the grocery store
A. More varieties produce more profits.
B. Fewer varieties attract more people.
C. More varieties reduce running costs.
D. Fewer varieties create higher sales rate.
35. What does the author advise in the last paragraph
A. Improving product quality. B. Increasing product varieties.
C. Avoiding displaying all options. D. Hiding the best-selling products.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

What is a mistake A mistake is something wrong. It can be an action, a concept, or a thing that was not done correctly. It can leave you feeling negative and unsuccessful. However, research shows that making mistakes is beneficial to you. Whether mistakes are beneficial or harmful depends on how much you know about them. 36
There are many reasons why humans make mistakes. A lack of experience in a certain field or situation may result in the mistakes. 37 This is because, by having confidence, you can think that nothing bad can happen to you, but it turns out that it is not true. You have to be ready for anything at all times since life is very uncertain.
What do I do when I make a mistake 38 You must ask yourself: Why did I make this decision Why was it not the correct decision After answering these questions internally, the best thing you can do is to try to make up for the mistake you made to prevent it from further harming you. Consider that all people make mistakes, and it is common that at first, you do not know what to do to correct them. You should calm down a little and then let everything go to find the best solution.
39 Some do not even allow themselves to be wrong because they want to be perfect. The destructive goal is to push yourself to exhaustion in search of perfection. The healthy goal is to seek excellence in the result while enjoying the process of improvement.
40 What is now an unwanted result, in the future may become what helps you to achieve it, because it makes you worry, get back to work, expand the information you had and develop new skills to deal with the situation.
A. The first thing to do is to reflect.
B. Today’s mistake helps you get it right tomorrow.
C. Overconfidence can also cause us to make many mistakes.
D. The first thing when you make a mistake is to control your emotions.
E. Most people are afraid of making mistakes because they think it is not good.
F. So it is important to understand why you make mistakes and what to do with them.
G. Reflecting on your improvement can help you view mistakes positively in the future.

Deliverance (解救) for Delivery Drivers

I am, of course, referring to delivery drivers 42 through crossroads to deliver takeaway food.
Over the past few years, delivery drivers have been criticized, fined, and even 43 for breaking traffic laws across China. Delivery drivers often 44 red lights, disregard speed limits, and pay little attention to pedestrian crossings. But they also often pay the 45 price — each year, it seems like fatal injuries involving delivery drivers are increasing. 46 , since delivery drivers are usually poorly paid, how much blame do they really deserve for running against the clock
Well, it 47 to be a complicated issue. Recently an article titled “Delivery Drivers. Stuck in the System” was shared widely social media. According to the article, 48 between delivery services Ele, me and Meituan has caused each app to take increasingly extreme measures to outdo (超过) the other. This has included the shortening of delivery time windows. It has been 49 , in part, through a combination of rewards for early delivery and severe punishments for late delivery. Over time, the platforms have only increased these 50 on drivers. As a result, drivers find themselves in a dilemma (左右两难的困境): break traffic laws or, in some cases, lose hundreds of yuan in earnings for late deliveries.
According to surveys and reactions online, 51 care much whether their deliveries are a few minutes late, while most believe that it is not worth risking someone’s life for. In response, Ele, me and Meituan have added a combination of features to 52 delivery times for slow elevators or bad weather conditions.
Although these new 53 cannot solve the underlying problems of intense competition or the inherent (固有的) dangers of driving, they should, in some measure, start reducing some of the pressure on drivers. In the meantime, as 54 , we can help to make life for delivery riders safer and easier. 55 , be a considerate person and don’t leave them waiting for too long. If you see a food delivery guy rushing toward you on an escalator or into a door, consider standing back and letting him go first. After all, they are putting their lives on the line just to deliver our food.

My great-grandmother Eileen is ambitious (有雄心的), determined, loyal, strong and a bit of legend (传奇) in her own lifetime, which now reaches 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day. I paid a visit to her. On my arrival, seeing my low spirits, she asked me whether I had prepared to get a new start. I just kept silent. Without any more words, she picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table, saying “You do know what you’re doing with these things, don’t you ”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient.
“Yes.” I said.
“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the Internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly. Setting up the phone would be easy, but teaching her how to use it might be challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode (密码) and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.
When I finally got her to swipe (滑动屏幕), she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take it easy!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home when she was angry.

My favorite film
Forest Gump is one of the most inspirational films that leaves a deep impression on me. Forest Gump is an American film made in 1994. Tom Hanks stars in the film. Forrest Gump, the main character, was unfortunately born with an IQ of 75, but he has a wonderful life. Not only is he a football star, but he is also a war-hero and later a millionaire. He wins respect, wealth and money.
The lesson I learn from it is that if we do what we should do well, life will give us a good gift.

Text 2
M: If I were you. I’d just walk to work. It would take you about 20 minutes. Riding a bike is a good choice, too.

Text 3
W: It’s 8:30. Dave, and you’re going to be late for the meeting.

W: And then
M: And then, the other side says. “Hold it, not so fast! For all those years you were in the army, you planned to go to college so that you would have many job possibilities to choose from. You’ve planned your whole life around going to college. And now…”
W: I can see it. It’s true that with your experience in the army, you could do excellent work repairing cars if you accept the job. But you are doing very well now. Just think of the future. You will get better jobs.

W: Hey, John. Can I talk to you for a minute
M: Sure, what’s up
W: I wanted to let you know about a book club I joined a few months ago. I know you do a lot of reading, so I thought you might want to come with me next month.
M: Oh, that sounds like fun. When does the group meet
W: Usually the last Saturday of the month at 7:30 in the evening. Is that too late for you
M: No, I think that’s okay. What do you talk about in the group
W: Well, every month we choose a new book. And then during the next meeting, we discuss it.
M: What books have you read
W: Quite a lot. Recently we have read The Beautiful Mind and The Great Gatsby. Now we are reading The Kite Runner.
M: The Kite Runner I’ve heard that’s a good book. What’s it about
W: It’s about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1980s.
M: That sounds interesting. I’d love to come.
W: Great! The next meeting will be held in two weeks, so you still have time to read the book.
Text 10
W: Today, let’s begin with note-taking techniques. Note-taking is an important skill not only for taking classes, but also for doing your job in the future. I’d like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes. First, remember that note-taking should be 75% listening and only 25% writing, so don’t try to write down every single word the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases, not complete sentences. Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping web, and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out. Here are some examples.
