One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.
I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.
Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.
“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.
Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.
4. Why did the author stop the car
A. To help the turtle. B. To see the thing clearly.
C. To prevent a car accident. D. To find something good.
5. What happened to the turtle
A. It got hurt by people before. B. It was injured a little bit.
C. It was run over by a car. D. It lost its direction.
6. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last
A. Leaving the turtles alone.
B. Making Ontario home to turtles.
C. Changing the road conditions.
D. Helping turtles find nesting spots.
7. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph
A. The director. B. The driver.
C. The author. D. The turtle.

The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco, it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night. Waking early, travelers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning, it's another 2km walk up to the ruins, 3, 100m above sea level. To get back Well, it's the same way you came.
“I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company. “But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day. Six or seven days for the hike is best.”
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season (June through pare that to the 2, 500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards (回报) are great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car (缆车) to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride. As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)
8. What does the first paragraph centre on
A. How tall Choquequirao is. B. How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C. What great views Choquequirao has. D. How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
9. In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu
A. Choquequirao is older. B. Choquequirao is quieter.
C. Choquequirao is smaller. D. Choquequirao is better known.
10. How are the ruins of Choquequirao
A. They're still being dug out. B. They're in a generally poor condition.
C. They're being renewed at the moment. D. They've been researched internationally.
11. What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future
A. It will be more attractive.
B. It will develop at a slow speed.
C. It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D. It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.
D
For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic (基因的,遗传学的) risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
12. How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A. By analyzing a mass of data.
B. By conducting genetic research.
C. By comparing various levels of activity.
D. By tracking the subjects for many years.
13. What does the study show about depression
A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
14. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Harmful. B. Complex. C. Unusual. D. Common.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A. To discuss a disease.
B. To introduce a method.
C. To analyze a genetic risk.
D. To explain a phenomenon.

B. The driver.
C. The author. D. The turtle.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. A 7. D

【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake.(我曾听说,要想抓住乌龟而不伤着它,最好的办法就是抓住它的尾巴,以免被它咬伤。所以我犯了一个大错误)”可知,“我”听说抱起海龟且不伤害它的最好方法是抓住它的尾巴,这样就不会被咬到。所以“我”犯了那个很大的错误。由此可推知,海龟因为“我”的错误操作而受伤了。故选 B。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段最后两句“‘Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,’ Dr. Sue said.(‘海龟知道自己要去哪里。所以,只要让它们朝着它们想去的方向前进,你可能就救了一只海龟的命,’Sue博士说)”可知,Sue博士说海龟知道自己要去哪里,因此,只要让海龟朝着自己想去的方向走,你就可能拯救了一只海龟的性命。由此可知,帮助海龟最好的办法就是不干涉它。故选 A。

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

【答案】Dear Tom,
As for the good ways to learn Chinese well, my suggestions are as follows.
First and foremost, be interested in what you are learning. As we all know, interest is the best teacher. If you have an interest in something, it’s easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. In addition, it’s also a good idea to read more Chinese books. This is because you can learn many new words while reading. Last but not least, you can try to improve your Chinese by watching Chinese movies as well, which will help you to improve your listening and speaking skills.
I hope you can take my advice into consideration.

Li Hua
