The amount of plastic pollution in the oceans is rapidly increasing. This is problematic, as at least 700 species of sea animals — including sharks, whales seabirds and turtles — can be trapped in the stuff or mistake it for a tasty snack. While we know that some species seem to eat plastic because it looks like jellyfish or some other food source, less research has been carried out into what sea plastic smells like to sea animals.
But now, a study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has found that the coating of algae and microbes (藻类、微生物) that naturally builds up on ocean plastics causes the rubbish to give off the smell of food.
The researchers took 15 healthy turtles, each around five months old and placed them in a laboratory aquarium (水族箱). They then piped in clean water, clean plastic, turtle food, and plastic that had been down in the sea environment for five weeks. The turtles showed no reaction to the smell of clean water or clean plastic. But when they were exposed to the smells of ocean plastic or turtle food, they exhibited hunting behaviour — like sticking their noses out of the water and showing increased activity.
“This finding is important because it’s the first demonstration that the smell of ocean plastics causes animals to eat them,” said Dr Kenneth J Lohmann, who took part in the study.
“It’s common to find the sea turtles with their digestive systems fully or partially blocked because they’ve eaten plastic materials There also are increasing reports of sea turtles that have been ill and stranded on the beach due to their swallow of plastic.”
“Once these plastics are in the ocean we don’t have a good way to remove them or prevent them from smelling like food” said Lohmann. “The best thing we can do is to keep plastic from getting into the ocean at all.”
8. What does the new research mainly focus on
A. What has caused the sea plastic pollution.
B. What sea plastic smells like to sea animals.
C. How dangerous the sea environment is.
D. How dangerous the sea plastic pollution is.
9. What can we infer from the experiment
A. The turtles of 5 months old are the most healthy ones.
B. The turtles prefer dirty environments to clean ones.
C. The clean plastic has no certain smell to attract turtles.
D. The clean plastic is more dangerous than the ocean plastic.
10. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in Para 5
A. trapped B. rescued C. harmed D. treated
11 What is the title of the passage
A. Sea turtles and sea environment B. Sea turtles and their enemies
C. Sea turtles and sea food chain D. Sea turtles and sea plastics

Most of us have too much stuff.
People with untidy, messy rooms have untidy minds and they feel stressed, finding it hard to relax. ____13____ There is no doubt that too much stuff is bad for us and we have to change.
Now, imagine this bedroom: a desk, a chair, a white floor, a bed and a wardrobe. That’s all. It looks calm and relaxing. This is the minimalist style. Minimalists believe that they don’t have to own a lot of possessions to be happy. ____14____
At this point you are probably asking “Do I have to remove all my favourite things ” ____15____ A minimalist room is too extreme for most people, and personal possessions like photos and books are comforting and help us feel easy at home.
____16____ Consider this simple rule: if you don’t use something for longer than 6 months, get rid of it. You have to regularly tidy and sort all the stuff out in your room. After tidying, you’ll have much room in your closet and drawer. Your parents don’t say “You must tidy your room!” any more! Your room will look more large and bright, making you feel free and comfortable!
A. This makes them feel unhappy.
B. In fact, they enjoy their messy home.
C. Of course the answer is that you don’t.

根据 Burj AI Arab, Dubai部分的最后一句话“The tennis court is circular in shape and when no session is at play, it doubles as a helipad (直升机场).(网球场是圆形的,当不进行比赛时,它可以兼作直升机停机坪。)” 所以选A。
根据Camp Bonifas, South Korea部分的“When they built the course they realized that they wouldn’t be able to fit 18 holes in the camp, so they decided to build a 1-hole golf course surrounded by LIVE minefields (布雷区) on three sides.(当他们建造球场时,他们意识到营地无法容纳18个洞,所以他们决定建造一个三面被布雷区包围的1洞高尔夫球场。)”
根据Blue Hole, Egypt 部分中的“It is known as the most dangerous diving spot because of the large number of deaths that have occurred from people diving in the hole.(它被称为最危险的潜水点,因为很多人在这个洞里潜水时死亡。)”可知,Blue Hole作为最危险的潜水地而闻名,根据Ponte Brolla, Switzerland 部分中的“Ponte Brolla is famous as one of the most famous, extreme and dangerous cliff diving, or “tombstoning” spots in the world.( Ponte Brolla是世界上最著名、最极端、最危险的悬崖跳水或“墓碑”景点之一。)”

A. trapped B. rescued C. harmed D. treated
11. What is the title of the passage
A. Sea turtles and sea environment B. Sea turtles and their enemies
C. Sea turtles and sea food chain D. Sea turtles and sea plastics
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

由文章第一段中“While we know that some species seem to eat plastic because it looks like jellyfish or some other food source, less research has been carried out into what sea plastic smells like to sea animals.(虽然我们知道一些物种似乎吃塑料,因为它看起来像水母或其他食物来源,但很少有研究对海洋动物来说海洋塑料闻起来像什么。)”
由文章第三段中“The researchers took 15 healthy turtles, each around five months old and placed them in a laboratory aquarium (水族箱). They then piped in clean water, clean plastic, turtle food, and plastic that had been down in the sea environment for five weeks. The turtles showed no reaction to the smell of clean water or clean plastic. But when they were exposed to the smells of ocean plastic or turtle food, they exhibited hunting behaviour — like sticking their noses out of the water and showing increased activity.(研究人员选取了15只健康的海龟,每只大约5个月大,并将它们放在实验室水族箱中。然后,他们用管道输送干净的水、干净的塑料、海龟食物和在海洋环境中已经存在了五周的塑料。海龟对干净的水或干净的塑料的气味没有反应。但当它们暴露在海洋塑料或海龟食物的气味中时,它们就会表现出狩猎行为——比如把鼻子伸出水面,并表现出更多的活动。)”可知,这种干净的塑料没有一定的气味来吸引海龟,故选C,其余选项没有提及。故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第五段中“It’s common to find the sea turtles with their digestive systems fully or partially blocked because they’ve eaten plastic materials There also are increasing reports of sea turtles that have been ill and stranded on the beach due to their swallow of plastic.”(发现海龟的消化系统完全或部分堵塞是很常见的,因为它们吃了塑料材料。 A. trapped被困;B. rescued获救;C. harmed受伤;D.treated治疗。 故选A。
根据第二段的“But now, a study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has found that the coating of algae and microbes (藻类、微生物) that naturally builds up on ocean plastics causes the rubbish to give off the smell of food.(但现在,北卡罗来纳大学教堂山分校的一项研究发现,在塑料表面自然堆积的藻类和微生物涂层会导致垃圾散发出食物的气味)”,及全文可知,文章向读者介绍了一项实验研究结果,海洋塑料对海龟来说会散发出食物的味道,即海龟和海洋塑料的关系。故选D。

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn’t know she was going to America and would not be returning.
Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, “Don’t worry, Grandma. Nothing’s going to happen to your scarf. You’ll see that it’s going to bring both of us luck.” And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.
Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.
“I’m sorry. Do I know you ” Eliza asked.
“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. And I have been living here in Washington DC in America ever since.” Eliza could not believe it, stories of her grandmother’s best friend floating into her mind. Assuming that the old woman must be her grandmother’s best friend, she said, “Betty, would you mind coming with me right now I need to show you somebody.”
The old woman agreed. Soon they left the restaurant after a quick dinner. On the way, Betty felt her heart was thumping with excitement. She couldn’t wait to see her long-lost friend. Arriving at Scout’s home, Betty eagerly rang the door bell. The moment Scout opened the door, she was rooted to the ground due to the amazement at seeing her childhood friend standing in front of her. Both of them were in tears, hugging each other tightly. Time seemed to cease to witness the great moment.
