My Life on an Island
We live on the island of Hale. It’s about four kilometers long and two kilometers wide at its broadest point, and it’s joined to the mainland by a causeway ____1____ (call) Stand—a narrow road built across the mouth of the river ____2____ separates us from the rest of the country. Most of the time you wouldn’t know we’re on an island because the river mouth between us and the mainland is just a vast stretch of tall grasses and brown mud. But when there’s a high tide and the water rises a half meter or so above the road and nothing can pass ____3____ the tide goes out again a few hours later, then you know it’s an island.
We were on our way back ____4____ the mainland. My old brother, Dominic, had just finished his first year at university in a town 150 km away. Dominic’s train was due in at five and he’d asked for a lift back from the station. Now, Dad normally hates being disturbed when he ____5____ (write) (which is just about all the time), and he also hates having to go anywhere, but despite the typical sighs and moans –why can’t he get a taxi What’s wrong with the bus — I could tell by the flash in the eyes that he was really looking forward to ____6____ (see) Dominic.
So anyway, Dad and I had driven to the mainland and picked up Dominic from the station. He had been talking non-stop from the moment he’d got in the car. University this, university that, writers, books, parties, people, money…I didn’t like the way he spoke and waved his hands around ____7____ he was some kind of scholar or something. It was embarrassing. It made me feel uncomfortable—that kind of discomfort you feel when someone you like, someone close to you, suddenly starts acting like a complete idiot. And I didn’t like the way he was ignoring me, either. For all the attention I was getting I ____8____ as well not have been there. I felt a stranger in my own car.
We were about halfway across when I saw a boy. My first thought was how odd it was ____9____ (see) someone walking on the Stand. You don’t often see people walking around here. As we drew _____10_____ (close), he became clearer. He was actually a young man rather than a boy. It’s hard to explain…

Why Aren’t Women Happier
Why aren’t women happier these days
That’s the question raised by a thought-provoking study, The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness, ___11___ last month. The research showed that over the past 35 years women’s happiness has declined, both ___12___ to the past and relative to men even though the lives of women in the US have improved in recent decades by most ___13___ measures.
The research, by University of Pennsylvania economists Stevenson and Wolfers, and made ___14___ by the National Bureau of Economic Research, found the decline in happiness to be widespread among women across a variety of demographic(人口统计)groups. The researchers, for instance, measured similar declines in happiness among women who were single parents and married parents, “___15___ doubt on the hypothesis(假设)that trends in marriage and divorce, single parenthood or work/family ___16___ are at the root of the happiness declines among women,” they wrote.
One theory for the decline in happiness is that expectations for workplace and general advancement were raised too high by the women’s movement and women might feel ___17___ for not “having it all,” as a Los Angeles Times columnist recently put it.
The researchers acknowledge that’s a ___18___ :
“If the women’s movement raised women’s expectations faster than society was able to meet them,” the paper says, “they would be more likely to experience ___19___ in their lives.” But they add things could change for the better: “As women’s expectations move into adjustment with their experiences, this decline in happiness may reverse.”
Readers, why do you think women are unhappier than in the past Do you think that if expectations for “having it all” were ___20___ to “move into adjustment with experiences,” women might be happier

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most famous and enduring children’s classics.
The book begins with young Alice catches sight of a small white figure, a rabbit dressed in a waistcoat and holding a pocket watch, murmuring (喃喃细语) to himself that he is late. She runs after the rabbit and follows it into a hole. After falling into the depths of the earth, she finds herself in a corridor full of doors. At the end of the corridor, there is a tiny door with tiny key through which Alice can see a beautiful garden that she is desperate to enter. She then sees a bottle labeled “Drink me”, which she does, and begins to shrink until she is small enough to fit through the door.
Unfortunately, she has left the key that fits the lock on a table, now well out of her reach. She then finds a cake labeled “Eat me”, which again she does, and is restored to her normal size. Disconcerted by this frustrating series of events, Alice begins to cry, and as she does, she shrinks and is washed away in her own tears.
This strange beginning leads to a series of progressively “curiouser and curiouser” events, which see Alice babysit a pig, take part in a tea party, and take part in a game of croquet (槌球). She meets some incredible characters. She also, famously, meets the Queen of Hearts who has a special liking for execution (处决).
The book reaches its climax (高潮) in the trial of the Knave of Hearts, who is charged with stealing the Queen’s pies. A good deal of nonsense evidence is given against the unfortunate man, and a letter is produced which only refers to events by pronouns. Alice, who by now has grown to a great size, support the Knave but the Queen demands her execution. As she is fighting off the Queen’s soldiers, Alice awakes, realizing she has been dreaming all along.
The book is brilliant for children, but with enough joy for life in it to please adults too.

Culture can affect not just language and customs but also how people experience the world on surprisingly basic levels.
Researchers, with the help of brain scans, have uncovered shocking differences in perception(感知) between Westerners and Asians, what they see when they look at a city street, for example, or even how they perceive a simple line in a square, according to findings published in a leading science journal
In western countries, culture makes people think of themselves as highly independent entities(实体) .When looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus more on central objects than on their surroundings. East Asian cultures, however emphasize inter-dependence. When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on surroundings as well as the object.
Using an experiment involving two tasks, Dr Hedden asked subjects to look at a line simply to estimate its length, a task that is played to American strengths. In another, they estimated the line's length relative to the size of a square, an easier task for the Asians.
The level of brain activity, by tracking blood flow, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment found that although there was no difference in performance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels of activity in the subjects’ brains were different. For the Americans, areas linked to attention lit up more, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult--estimating the line's size relative to the square. For the Asians, the attention areas lit up more during the harder task also--estimating the line's length without comparing it to the square. The findings are a reflection of more than ten years of previous experimental research into east-west differences
In one study, for instance, researchers offered people a choice among five pens, four red and one green. Easterners were more likely to choose a red pen while Westerners were more likely to choose the green one.
Culture is not affecting how you see the world, but how you choose to understand and internalize(使内化) it. But such habits can be changed. Some psychological studies suggest that when an Easterner goes to the West or vice versa, habits of thought and perception also begin to change. Such research gives us clues on how our brain works and is hopeful for us to develop programs to improve our memory, memory techniques and enhance and accelerate our learning skills.
43. According to the passage, Chinese people are most likely to_________.
A. emphasize independent thinking more
B. always focus more on their surroundings
C. focus on the context as well as object
D. think of Westerners as highly independent entities
44. We know from the passage that people's brains will be more active when_________.
A. the task is much easier
B. the blood flow is tracked
C. people begin to choose colors
D. the task is more difficult
45. What do the findings of the experiments mentioned in the passage indicate
A. They indicate that culture has a great impact on the way people talk and behave.
B. They show that Easterners and Westerners have great differences in perceiving the world
C. They suggest that people's habits of thought and perception can be changed in different cultures.
D. They make it clear that Easterners and Westerners lay emphasis on different things
46. It can be inferred from the passage that_________.
A. Easterners prefer collectivism to individualism
B. East Asian cultures lay more emphasis on independence
C. It took over ten years to find out how to improve our brainpower
D. Americans will change their habits of perception when they're in Britain

Ensuring that disabled people have an easy life is very important not just because they are human, like all of us, but because their dignity and social well-being should not be ignored just because of a disability. Disabilities can occur through illness, aging, accidents and other different causes that may happen to anyone or affect us all at some stage in life. ____47____.
We are all human beings and so have the same basic needs. But we should remember that there is a wide range of what we call a disability and while the basic needs are all the same for everyone, the different lifestyle needs are entirely individual. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all method to improve quality of life. It is best to find out people’s needs from spending time with them.
____48____. Even the most attractive homes can feel like a cage, so it makes a huge difference to be able to go out to a park or a shopping center, or to plan a day trip such as a picnic or a trip to the beach. Even if a trip can only be organized one day a month, it is more than nothing and does really make a difference.
If they are interested or able, pets can be great companions. ____49____. Some may be able to take care of a cat or dog; some prefer goldfish or birds in a cage. Very often, people who are cared for don’t feel that they have the chance to care for someone or something else, so caring for pets can improve their confidence and mental health, which can take their mind off their own troubles.
____50____. Book a regular appointment with a social worker to visit them at least once a month. This is to check on their mental and physical health as well as ways of improving their living conditions. It is important because they may need to talk to someone.

We were about halfway across when I saw a boy. My first thought was how odd it was ____9____ (see) someone walking on the Stand. You don’t often see people walking around here. As we drew _____10_____ (close), he became clearer. He was actually a young man rather than a boy. It’s hard to explain…

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most famous and enduring children’s classics

A. The rabbit follows Alice quietly into a hole.
B. Alice’s sister is reading a book in the garden.

37. The underlined word “disconcerted” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

B. The Queen is so kind as to free the Knave.
C. The Knave is charged in a letter which details his crimes.

Culture can affect not just language and customs, but also how people experience the world on surprisingly basic levels.

Directions: Read the following passage. The passage is followed by six sentences. Choose four of them to make the passage complete. There are two extra sentences.
Ensuring that disabled people have an easy life is very important, not just because they are human, like all of us, but because their dignity and social well-being should not be ignored just because of a disability. Disabilities can occur through illness, aging, accidents and other different causes that may happen to anyone or affect us all at some stage in life. ____47____.
We are all human beings and so have the same basic needs. But we should remember that there is a wide range of what we call a disability, and while the basic needs are all the same for everyone, the different lifestyle needs are entirely individual.
A. Plan regular trips.

C. It is wise to check the abilities of the individuals.
