(B) The Great Barn Adventure
One morning when I was 11, I explored the town’s abandoned round grain barn(谷仓). I found a door that was wide enough for me to pass through.
Inside, there was a heavy smell of dead mice. After my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I noticed a shaft (升降机井) that rose all the way to the top of the barn. On one side was a one-man elevator with a long rope and roller.
I stepped onto the platform and gave the rope a drag and the elevator began going up the shaft, but stopped halfway. After a brief panic attack, I noticed holes
in the wall at regular intervals(间隔), forming a ladder. For
reasons known only to an 11-year-old, I decided it would be
better to go up than down. So, with shaking hands, I began
climbing the wall.
After what seemed like forever, I reached the top of the
shaft. I stood up, dusted myself off and found…absolutely nothing of interest. It was just an empty room with a ladder leading up to the roof. I climbed all the way up here for this Then I noticed a fire extinguisher(灭火 器),which I’d always wanted to shoot off. So this was the chance of a lifetime. I tried it, and, much to my surprise, the thing worked! It shot out a thick cloud of powder that immediately filled the room. I couldn’t breathe. Luckily, I remembered the ladder to the roof. I climbed up, popped the straw roof and saw a bright blue sky.
I suddenly realized the dust and powder pouring out of the top could draw attention. So when the dust had settled, I climbed down and slipped out of the barn. I’m not sure if I was more excited about being alive or about not being caught, but I ran all the way back home.

If you wake up with a cough and a sore throat, you can go to the doctor. But when the soil is
sick, it is not able to tell anyone! This is the concept that made the EPA take action. They formed a group of professional soil doctors to monitor the health of dirt.
Healthy soil is essential because it allows plants and animals to grow well. Healthy soil also
prevent poisonous chemicals, holds water and gives some wastes time to be destroyed. But its ability to do these things is not unlimited. That’s when a soil doctor is needed.
As the world’s economies and certain industries grow, so does soil pollution. Sources of this
pollution include waste from factories and farms and household garbage as well as agricultural waste. Water often carries poisonous chemical from this waste into the fields where they work their way into the soil. These chemicals can cause plants to produce food that is harmful or prevents crops from growing at all.
People need to be on the lookout for soil pollution to protect themselves and others. In 1984 in Taoyuan County, a chemical company let out wastewater into a rice field. In order to keep people from eating the poisonous rice, all of the crops had to be destroyed.
In situations where soil is polluted, the first step soil doctors take is to stop the farming of the
land. The EPA then treats the soil so that it can be used again. Some types of treatment take place
onsite in the field and some are offsite. Eventually, crops can be planted again in the soil, but it could be years before that happens.
Soil doctors can treat “sick” soil, but they prefer to prevent soil pollution. They try to manage
the risk of pollution by testing dirt regularly. Soil doctors play an important role in preventing
poisonous chemicals from harming plants, animals and people. But ordinary people can do their part by ___________________________________________________.
