Scientists have developed a way to read minds, translating unspoken thoughts into written words. It's the first time it's been done without having to put anything into the brain. They used artificial intelligence (AI)(人工智能). It is the name given to a computer system that is able to "think" for itself and carry out tasks that usually require human intelligence.
Scientists used a special scanner(扫描器).The machine can see where blood runs, which shows the parts of the brain that are most active.People taking part in the experiment(实验) listened to the radio for 16 hours as their brains were scanned. The AI tool learned to connect certain brain activity with words they heard. After that, each person was asked to think of a story, and the AI tool managed to pick up these thoughts as they happened.
The results had about a 50% accuracy rate(准确率),although the AI found it hard to work out the meaning of pronouns, such as he or she,her or him.For example,it turned"I don't have my driver's license yet"into"She has not even started to learn to drive yet." It could usually understand the meaning of what someone was thinking rather than the exact words. The AI was personalized,so when it had learnt from one person but it was tested on another,it couldn't understand their thoughts.
The scientists, who have been working on the technology for 15 years, say they understand the risks of it being used badly.Scientist Jerry Tang told a newspaper, "We want to make sure people only use these types of technologies when they want to,and that it helps them." The scientists hope it will help people with certain medical conditions, who are still awake but have lost the ability to speak,to communicate once again.

Most of us cannot imagine modern life without social media (社交媒体) .We use it almost every day in order to keep up with what is happening in our friends' lives,or find out the latest information.Although it has a bad influence if we don't use it properly, social media has done more good than harm.
The greatest advantage is that we can connect with people much more easily. We are still able to keep in touch with our friends if they are far away. With social media, friendship goes beyond geography. We are able to find friends old and new. Also,it makes it easier for us to make friends, especially for those who are afraid of making friends face to face. Are you shy?If yes, social media has probably helped.
Social media is also ideal for making yourself heard.Anyone with a voice can express it.Anyone with a talent is free to show it.Everyone is the new content creator. Moreover, anyone with a smartphone and the Internet can be a reporter. As a result,it has become much faster to cover the news than ever before.
Social media,on the other hand, can make us less confident sometimes.A 2021 study published by the Public Library of Science, found that the more a person uses social media, the sadder he feels about his own life. One reason for this is that people around us put colourful information and perfect pictures online in order to show off their best moment. So we often get a distorted sense of how wonderful their lives are compared to our own.
Social media does not cause sadness;it simply provides another tool for us to use.Is it good or bad?Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says,"What is interesting is the power and influence of social media ...We must try to use social media in a good way."After all ,you decide how you use this powerful tool.
13. What is the greatest advantage of social media according to the passage?

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
