It was a cold winter. The wind blew all night and the snow was blinding. When morning came, my three children and I got up and made our way to the windows. As we looked out of the window, we saw that the henhouse was gone. Our three hens had been blown away.
I looked at the emptiness outside. Then I saw all three chickens sitting around the edge of a white bucket. How was this strong wind not blowing them into the field beyond I quickly put on my long heavy winter coat and large boots.
I shouted at the wind as it blew. I was alone, struggling in the snow. My children stared out of the window into the vast white sea of snow, their eyes focused for any sign of movement. Outside I heard the sound of my boots as I braved the elements.
The snow circling around me, I slowly made my way to the soft cluck-cluck-cluck sound my hens always made. When I reached them, I saw that their little feet were holding on to the edge of the bucket, heads bent(弯下)forward and away from the wind. I gently lifted each hen and put it carefully into the warm inside. Then I began the freezing walk back to the small shed ( 棚 子 )directly behind our house. One by one I laid my chickens on the cold floor, and they began to cluck softly.
As I shut the shed doors, my eyes went directly to the window where my children were watching. They jumped up and down cheering, and so did I!I wasn't some superman from movies. I was simply a mom, but the look on my children's faces told me that they thought I was a hero mom.

On Saturday, August 24, 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish—sand eels(沙鳗) —lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen dead.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout (水龙卷), Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful that anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances sometimes over 150 kilometers. It's very cold up there and everything soon freezes.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate change and many reports of terrible storms, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs

Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas, and the other means cold, hard data(数据)—some people believe. In fact, the two have much in common. Now, a study finds art can help students remember better what they learned in science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, noticed that students who used art in the classroom listened more carefully. They might ask more questions. They might volunteer more ideas. What's more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons included art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment, the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided traditional science lessons and art-focused ones. In the art-focused ones, they might sing the information instead.
The team randomly( 随 机 地 )divided the 350 students into either a traditional science classroom or an art-focused one. Students then learned science using that way for the whole unit —about three weeks. When they changed to a new topic, they also changed to the other type of class. This way. each student had both an art-focused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways. to different groups of students. This enabled the researchers to see how students did in both types of classes.
The team found that students who started off in traditional classes performed better after they moved into an art-focused class. But those who started in an art-focused class did well even when they went back to a traditional science class. These students appeared to use some of the art techniques(技巧)after going back to a traditional class. Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sing the songs that they leaned after finishing the unit. “The more we hear something, the more we retain it, "Hardiman says. "It suggests that the arts may help students apply creative ways of learning on their own. "
32. What is the purpose of the study
A. To offer great ways to teach art lessons.
B. To find a way to help students learn better.
C. To see if art and science have a lot in common.
D. To prove art might be useful for science learning.
33. What were the students required to do in the experiment
A. Take two types of classes.
B. Learn three units in total.
C. Learn two topics for three weeks.
D. Choose what they would like to learn.
34. What does the underlined word "retain" in the last paragraph mean
A. Improve. B. Express. C. Remember. D. Finish.

That got me thinking about all our meaningless cost in life. Why not make a change With butterflies in the stomach, we decided to take a try. The rules were that we would buy nothing for 30 days except necessities(必需品).
Our adventure(历险)began with a great start. By 9 a. m. , my wife, Ruth, had already made cakes from old strawberries and picked flowers I didn't even know we had in the garden. I cleared the car by hand for the first time for years. I read and returned the neighbor's newspaper before he woke up. Total spending on the first day:S0.
As days turned into weeks, we became so experienced at living simply. We started riding our bikes to save gas. My child's finger painting was recycled as gift wrap for the homemade presents.
We started to use an Internet application like Skype for free phone calls and ask neighbors with gardens for extra vegetables and herbs.

A broken heart. A sad ending to a love story. That's something most of us have experienced, or probably will. After all, it's part of human life. But no question, the experience can be hard to get over.
But research shows there are ways to deal with heartaches. Listening to sad music is a useful one. It can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. It can arouse (激发, 唤醒)the interest to connect with others.
Sad music can help uplift you from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found the emotional(情感的)influence of listening to sad music is an access to feelings of empathy(共情), and a hope for positive connection with others. That, itself, is psychologically healing(愈合). It draws you away from concentration on yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.
Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was "beautiful but sad "improved their mood. In fact, it did so when the person first consciously accept the situation causing their sadness, and then began listening to the sad music. That is, when they intended that the sad music might help, they found that it did.
These findings link with other studies that show accepting your sad situation emotionally leads to healing and growth beyond it. It seems unbelievable but it does help. For example, a research from Comell University, published in Psychological Science, found that accepting discomfort about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, encourages people to find a pathway through it, beyond it. As Churchill famously said, “If you're going through hell, keep going. ”That discomfort points you towards creating a plan, a new action. It fuels hope.

Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT has got viral, winning 100 million internet users since it came out in November 2022. People can ask the robot to write stories and emails, create instructions for cooking a certain food, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions. In its own words, it is “a language model trained in a large amount of internet text to help users get human-like text. ”
Compared with Siri or other chatbots, ChatGPT uses a much bigger information center for training. It also uses stronger software and hardware to learn things by itself. For example, if it provides a wrong answer to your question, you can tell it the right one and t will correct itself.
“It's a totally different chatbot, ”computer scientist Liu Xiaoguang from Nankai University said.
“The knowledge level ChatGPT shows is the same as a university student. That's why it shocked the world. "
But one big problem with ChatGPT is that it makes mistakes or even gives false information.
When Reza, a 28-year-old from Indonesia, used the robot to write an passage, it "gave out many examples which other writers actually hadn't mentioned at all", he told a local newspaper. When starting college, most students enjoy a week's stay on campus before classes actually begin. What should you do with that time Below are several tips to ease(使熟悉)yourself into college life.
Participating in Campus Welcome Activities
Most universities host welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen orientations(迎新会), campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts.
Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture: What do students do for fun What are their favorite classes What is the history of your university It can help you observe campus life outside the classroom.
Exploring Campus
Getting to know where essential campus resources are—such as the student advising center, psychological services, and the tutoring center—will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier, because you won't have to look for them while still getting used to your classes.
Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held. This will prevent you from getting lost in the first few days of classes, and familiarize you with how long it takes to get from place to place. If you're worried about taking classes one after another in different buildings, a quick test run won't hurt. That way, you will avoid potential time delays in getting to your classes.
Starting a Routine
Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up. Starting classes means being in different places at different times, so it's a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.
What helps you most is to schedule your sleep. Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep to get to those early classes and stay wide awake.
If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your day—to—day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.

The winter break is just about to end. Soon we will be back at school. It's with both happiness and sadness. With school starting there are new things to try out and experience. For example, I'm starting a new sport, Track. It's similar to Cross Country, which I did from August till November.
Being here for half a year now, I can easily tell the differences between my two schools. The hardest or most different part for me was to have the same schedule every day here. Honestly, I prefer to have different classes every day, as I did in my home country. However, I have fallen in love with the Friday football games. Football is one of my favorite sports now. Before I came, I knew nothing about it Now I love it, especially to watch it with my host parents. I have also been so lucky to go to two college football games.
Before I left school in December, I had a couple of tests called Mid-term Test. They all went pretty smooth, mostly because I didn't have too many hard classes. My favorite class was English, and also my hardest. Personally I really liked English, where I could write essays(文章), challenge writing skills and improve English talking.

As a child growing up in a suburban town in the Northeast of the United States, the arrival of spring had little meaning for me. Sure, we had a weeklong spring vocation from school, but the key word there was vacation, not spring.
For the kids in my neighborhood, the arrival of spring was a non-event. There were two important seasons: winter, when we could go skating and sledding or build snow forts, and summer, when we could finally make proper use of the beach about 100 meter east of my family home. Spring and autumn were just technical details, weeks and weeks of waiting for the good times' return.
Admittedly, spring later developed its own attractions for me “In the spring a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love”, as the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson noted—however, it was not spring itself, but the other stuff bat got my attention.
In short, I never thought much at all about spring. . . . and then I arrived in China. Ihad been in Beijing for about three months when my first Spring Festival rolled around, and it could hardly be ignored. Aside from the random bursts of fireworks at any time day or night, what stood out most for me was that the capital seemed to be empty.
It was as though the crowds and streams of cars and trucks commonly seen in the capital had all gone into hiding. My puzzlement cleared up when I returned to work. My colleagues explained that Chinese traditionally travel, if necessary, to visit their families during Spring Festival, and that many Beijingers were not natives of the capital.
I also got my first knowledge of something about Spring Festival that never ceases to amaze me. Regardless of when the holiday is set to begin, there is an almost immediate and sudden change for the better in the weather. Spring really does arrive.
I can't begin to figure out how the ancient Chinese could create a system that would almost always accurately predict when the season would shift year after year after year. But they did.

It is a book about friendship, loyalty and teamwork. It will make you laugh and cry and give you hope.
Co-written by Jessica Kensky and her husband Patrick Downes, the picture book, Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship, tells the story of a girl named Jessicawho is dealing with the loss of her legs. Rescue, her service dog, discovers that he can be a good friend and help Jessica get through hard times.

It was a September day, and as usual, the halls of Pine High School were filled with excitement. Students of all grades were rushing around. But for one student, today was unlike any other day. Today was the first day of high school for a freshman, Jamie. Jamie had always been a bit of a shy kid, but she had always loved her studies. She made up her mind to make the most of her high school years, but she knew that it wouldn't be easy.
As she walked down the hallways, Jamie couldn't help but feel worried. The older students seemed so confident, while she felt small and unimportant. But Jamie was determined to succeed, no matter what challenges came her way.

Travel is predicted to look extremely different in 2070.
Take airports for example, paperwork will be a thing of the past. Instead of paper passports, your information will be stored in the cloud. This type of technology won't just include what we are familiar with today—like fingerprints or face scans—but also your heartbeat, as everyone's heartbeat is unique.
There will be no need to check in. The facial recognition programme will instead be able to recognise you, match you with your booked flight and send messages to your phone as you walk through the airport without stopping.
Your bags, especially the heavy ones, will be sent directly from your train or taxi to the right plane. And that taxi will not be like the ones we know today. People will be expected to travel to the airport--and around their holiday destinations-in eVTOLs, which refers to electric air taxis that can take off and land without a runway.
As for the trouble of packing, 3D printers will provide perfect solutions. Simply provide your destination with your size using a body scan before you fly and, upon arrival, you will find a. wardrobe(衣橱) filled with 3D-printed clothes . When you leave, these clothes will be recycled and reprinted for the next tourist. Not only will this solve the problem of packing, but also make holiday fashion more environment -friendly.
While the predictions might seem unbelievable now, you only have to look back 50 years to realize it's all possible. Think back to 1973 when smartphones. were just a wild dream. “ Google” scemed like a made-up word then, and notebook computers were still almost years away from being invented. Similarly, when we look forward to the next 50 years, the possibilities for development in technology for travel are endless.

The Art Center at my school provides a wide range of programs. I tried out most of the programs offered on campus, and group fitness classes have been my favorite. They are free weekly classes taught and led by a student instructor, and they include yoga, cycle, weight-lifting and many more.
I started taking group fitness classes in cardio dance(有氧舞蹈)as a freshman and showed interest in it after just one class. The class is 45 minutes long and consists of repetitive dance moves that are easy to follow. I have so much fun performing the dance moves and following the beat that my stress of the day is often washed away after the workout. My love for cardio dance gradually evolved into an idea. What if I became a cardio dance instructor and spread the fun to more people
Inspired by this idea, I signed up for a training program for the group fitness instructor (GFI). We covered topics like how to design the class and how to perform first aid, etc. In addition to leaning fitness knowledge, we also got to practice teaching the class, interacting (互 动)with those who joined the class. As I learned more, I realized that becoming a GFI is not as easy as it seems. It takes a lot of practice to show proper form and make sure everyone in class is performing the right way.
When asked why we signed up for the GFI course, some said that fitness classes are a relief from the stress of school, while others said that fitness classes make for a more positive community. Yet, the most popular reason is the love for group fitness classes themselves. I feel thankful to be a part of the fitness community and share my contributions with people who are always there to support and cheer you up.
32. What do we know about the group fitness classes the author took
A. They cost a lot and are taught once a month.

C. The dance moves taught in class were hard to follow.
D. She got interested in the course in her second year of school.
33. What do the underlined word "evolved" mean in paragraph 2
A. Developed. B. Ran. C. Escaped. D. Fell.
34. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. Expert knowledge is unnecessary for a GFI.
B. A GFI needn't communicate with others in class.
C. Becoming a fitness instructor can be fun, but hard.
D. Fitness knowledge is more important than practice.
35. What is the common reason for taking fitness classes
A. Love for fitness. B. Thanks for community partners.
C. A relief from stress. D. Curiosity about the fit community.

When I was ten years old, I went to the US to visit some family friends. We travelled all the way from California to Las Vegas. I noticed something funny about the way everyone spoke English. I was thinking, “This is the way they speak in films!”
At the beginning of the holiday, one of my friends asked me if I wanted to order “French fries.” I couldn’t imagine what French fries were. What was fried and French ! Snails Cheese She was amazed that I had never tried them and she ordered a portion for us to share. When the waiter brought us some chips, I asked her where the French fries were. She pointed to the plate of chips! Later that week she said she was going to buy some “chips” from the supermarket. She came out with a packet of crisps!
During that holiday we were also offered “biscuits and gravy” with our lunch. This was a very strange idea to me, because in England biscuits are sweet. Gravy is a salty, meat-based sauce. I later realized that “biscuits” in America are savoury snacks. What we call “biscuits,” they call “cookies.”
One day, I saw an “eggplant” pizza on the menu in a restaurant! Eggs do not grow on plants, I thought. What on earth could an “eggplant” be Something eggy and leafy My dad ordered this pizza and it was covered in aubergines. I asked him where the “eggplant” was. He laughed and pointed to the aubergines. He told me, “They call this ‘eggplant’ in America!”
Although the same “language” may be spoken in different countries, there are likely to be many differences, not just in vocabulary but also in spelling, grammar and pronunciation! I think part of the excitement of learning a language is discovering the differences in how it is spoken in different places.

In the west of the Greek capital Athens, the fish market of Keratsini is busy early in the morning, with trucks waiting nearby to be loaded with fishes. But on his fishing boat, Arapakis sorts out something different—bottles, boots, plastic pipes and fishing nets, all dragged from the bed of the Aegean Sea.
“We are swimming in plastic,” said Arapakis, whose family has fished for five generations. “By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea,” he said, as recent reports noted.
That morning’s plastic catch weighed “about 100 kilograms,” said the founder of Enaleia, a nonprofit that encourages fishermen to collect marine (海洋的) waste caught in their nets. Since its establishment in 2018, it has worked with more than 1,200 fishermen in Greece to raise concern over the degradation of the marine environment.
Active in 42 ports throughout Greece, Enaleia provides fishermen with large bags for marine waste that they can put in garbage cans once back at port. For every kilogram of plastic they deliver, they receive a small amount of money, which is enough for a drink. Since October, fishing crews have dragged out 20 metric tons of plastic and old fishing equipment each month. Nearly 600 tons have been collected over the last five years. The collected plastic is transported to a recycling plant in the industrial area of Megara near Keratsini, to make new products such as socks, swimwear or furniture.
Arapakis said he went about the cleanup project after a trip to Greece’s Cyclades islands, where he saw fishermen throwing the waste gathered by their nets back into the sea.
Arapakis is convinced there has been a “mentality change” among Greece’s fishermen. “Previously we caught large quantities of plastic, but we only kept the fish. All waste was thrown into the sea,” said Mokharam, team leader on the Arapakis family’s boat. “The project brings practical benefits for fishing boats. In the past, the anchor was often caught by waste, especially nets, and the engine would go out. But now things have changed,” he added.
8.What can we learn about Arapakis from the first 2 paragraphs
A.He was a successful fish trader. B.He collected waste from the sea.
C.He liked swimming in the sea. D.He had a large family to support.
9.What does the underlined word “degradation” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Impact. B.Worsening. C.Improvement. D.Research.
10.What will most probably happen to the collected waste in the end
A.It will be sold at a high price. B.It will be exchanged for food.
C.It will be thrown back into the sea. D.It will be well dealt with for reuse.
11.What can we infer from Mokharam’s words
A.Fishing is a tough job for fishermen. B.The sea in Greece is seriously polluted.
C.He thinks highly of the cleanup project. D.He still feels ashamed for fishermen’s behavior.

Anyone who’s lived through middle school knows those years can be particularly challenging. Some researches show youths across the U.S. are struggling with mental health. The physical health benefits of bike riding have been well-documented. Wilson, a researcher at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and his co-authors carried out a new study to see if taking part in a cycling program could result in measurable changes in mind for teenagers.
The study involved more than 1,200 students, ages 11 to 14. Students participated in a cycling class for at least three days a week, for a period of 6 weeks. They learned cycling safety and practicing skills outdoors while raising their heart rate and just having fun. The students completed standardized questionnaires before and after the program designed to measure their health.
“We know cycling can benefit the body. Our research shows how it benefits the mind and social relationships as well. Bike riding can be an ideal activity for adolescents because of the benefits it offers,” said Wilson.
“Cycling engages several parts of brain function. You are looking at your hearing, you’re balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so there’s the positive effect of company or group activity,” said Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal. For example, previous research has shown that teenage girls are at higher risk of mental health problems like depression and anxiety than boys. The current study found that, while middle school girls reported increased well-being after participating in the cycling program, that increase “may just reach the kind of baseline level for male students,” Wilson said. And other aspects of healthy living are also important, noted Wilson. The study found that teenagers who didn’t limit screen time to a maximum of two hours a day, or who got less than the recommended 8.5 hours of sleep, saw less improvement in their well-being, he said.
12.What does the new study mainly focus on
A.Challenges in middle school. B.Youths in America.
C.Physical benefits of cycling. D.Mental effects of bike riding.
13.What did the students do in the program
A.Attend the cycling class for a week.
B.Learn how to keep safe while cycling.
C.Raise their heart rate by cycling indoors.
D.Design questions to measure their health.
14.What is Reiss’s attitude to the result of the study
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Negative.
15.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Application of the research results.
B.Doubts about the research methods.
C.Further explanation of the research findings.
D.Supporting evidence from previous research.
