I always feel sorry for world leaders busy dealing with fights between nations. When my three children were young, most days it was hard to keep my house from becoming a battlefield.
It got worse as they grew older.Three years ago,Zack, then 16,couldn’t make it through a day without making his sisters,Alex 11 and Taryn 9,angry.
My husband and I tried to be understanding the boy at such an age.We reasoned, punished, and left heartfelt notes on his bed about how he was hurting our family. His answer was “I say it because it’s true.”
I even tried telling the girls to fight back.Bad idea. Now I had three children at war.Whatever I said to them, they paid no attention. When there was no way out,I told everything to my sister,Mary,in an e-mail.She replied,“Don’t e-mail me.E-mail him.”
Our son was online every day, mailing and talking with his friends.Maybe he would actually hear me this way.I didn’t say anything different, but e-mail just took the tension away. There’d be no shouting or door banging.Zack wouldn’t feel under attack.
Zack didn’t reply for days. When he finally did,his entire message was four small words.I smiled when I read them:“You’re right.I’m sorry.”
The children still fought,of course, but Zack changed.Best of all,I now have a better way to talk with not one but three of them.I like it that they don’t tune me out as much as they used to.They don’t like having to listen to me shouting to them.Or as Alex says,“You’re so much nicer online.”

Do you use Meta,MySpace or Twitter If so,then you are part of a social network.Social networking sites allow us to see our social connections.
When you create a profile (a description of somebody that gives useful information) on a social networking site, you open up a number of possible social connections. You can look up old friends, make new friends, and share music, photos and videos with them.

As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn’t grow up with them. They don’t have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn’t work or where to go for help.We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.
I think there is huge potential and we are designing it.The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies, news and music,is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement at home and they aren’t always close to their friends.Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.
My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail.She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3.She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53,when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her.But before then, her friends couldn’t call her on the phone,so they suggested she use e-mail to communicate with them.
Young people don’t even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just there, and they use it.There’s been a very interesting change in communication styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren’t willing to make phone calls. And they think e-mail is old-fashioned and slow.
The reason why teens don’t make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call, they often stop for a while and there’s a silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it’s okay if you don’t answer. You might have been distracted. It’s not rude. But it is strange if you’re in this kind of conversation and simply stop talking.
32.What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet
A.They don’t know how to use some applications.
B.They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.
C.There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.
D.They have no friends to communicate with online.
33.What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage
A.Interesting. B.Amazing.
C.Boring. D.Common.
34.What can we infer from the passage about the author
A.He is a company manager.
B.He is a program designer.
C.He is a college professor.
D.He is a mobile phone seller.
35.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean
A.You have replied the message.
B.You have walked away from the conversation.
C.You have been cut off.
D.You have asked for a pardon.

Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes.Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get off the computer when the time is up.Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop. 40

It was a cold night in December. Two beggars were sitting on a busy street corner in the downtown section of the city. They watched helplessly as lots of people walked by.Some ignored them on purpose and others were too caught up in their own cares to even notice their existence.
Every so often,a kind-hearted woman or a small child would drop a few coins in the hats which lay in front of them on the icy sidewalk. Some people, feeling particularly generous, would even pull out a bill or two from their wallets and drop them into the beggars’ hats and then continue their walking.
Just as they were getting ready to leave the street corner, they noticed a man walking toward them.He was obviously a wealthy man. They could tell that from the finely tailored business suit he was wearing.
The first beggar whispered to the second with excitement,“He’s coming our way!” The two tried not to look directly at the man as he stepped closer to them, but they couldn’t help gazing up with expectation as he reached into his pocket and took something out.
“Thunk” was the only sound they heard as what looked like a piece of hard candy, wrapped doubly in tissue paper, hit each of their waiting hats. The rich man turned and continued on his way,not making a backward glance.
“How sickening!” said the first beggar,as soon as the rich man was out of sound range.“He could have easily left us a few coins or a spare bill, but he tricks us with a piece of hard candy.”The beggar picked up the object with the very tips of his fingers and threw it into the gutter(排水沟).He watched as it floated a few yards in the stream of muddy water and disappeared into the drain(下水道) at the end of the street. Then,he gathered up his things and walked away.

On Wednesday, the 8th of December 2021,more than 100 officials met in Los Angeles to celebrate the city’s 40 years of friendship with the Chinese city of Guangzhou.A similar celebration took place in Guangzhou on the 6th of December, with the opening of the Guangzhou-Los Angeles Friendship Garden.
Los Angeles,on America’s West Coast,is the second largest city in the US (after New York City,on the East Coast),while Guangzhou is the capital of China’s southern Guangdong province.
The relationship between the two “sister cities” first began in 1981,shortly after the US and China first began working together in 1979.
The main idea of “sister cities” is to share goods and ideas with other cities around the world, and for the past four decades,Guangzhou and Los Angeles have been a great example of this. They have also worked together to support one another through difficult times and to fight climate change and coronavirus.

第一节
Which would you give up:TV,Phone or Web
We are now living in an information age,in which TV,phones and the web are widely used.It seems that many people cannot enjoy themselves with them.
However,if I had to give up one of them,I would rather turn off TV rather than turn off my phone or cut off the Internet.I could do without TV because most of the programs on TV are also available elsewhere.
As for phones and the web,I need a phone to keep in touch with my friends and family, and almost all information can be gathered on the Internet.
第二节
The second beggar looked down at the object in his hat.His first idea was to throw the donation into the dustbin under the street light. But he felt hesitant and started thinking it over.He remembered that he hadn’t had things like that for ages.He thought the hard candy would stay in his mouth for a long time.He started to feel grateful to that man for offering him something so sweet.
So the second beggar changed his mind.He decided to open the object. He started feeling excited, wondering what the hard candy was made from.He eagerly opened the paper outside, and then continued to open the white tissue paper inside. He couldn’t wait to have a look at the hard candy. With that,he unwrapped the white tissue paper, but to his surprise, there was no hard candy inside.Instead, into his fingers fell a shiny jewel worth thousands of dollars. He said to himself,“Life is full of surprises. We should find them out through appreciation.”
