表示计划、打算干某事,类似的表达方式还有plan to do sth., mean to do sth., think about/of doing sth.等。

as it is =as it was 事实上,实际上
I thought they would help us. As it was, they just sat there and looked on.
I promised to return books yesterday. As it is, I won’t be able to do so until next Monday.
As it is等于in fact 或 as a matter of fact。
尤其值得注意的是,英语里还有一个类似的结构,即as it were,这一短语在意义和用法上与as it is/was完全不同,as it were 意思是“似乎是、仿佛是” 它所表达的内容不太肯定。如:He is, as it were, a walking dictionary.
5、Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with their closest relatives.
enable vt. 使……能够
The hubble telescope will enable us to have a better understanding of the distant stars and galaxies.
前缀en-加在名词或形容词前可以使这个词成为动词,如endanger(危及,使遭受危险),enlarge(扩大,扩展,扩充),enslave(奴役,使成为奴隶),entrap(使……入陷阱/圈套,欺骗)
5、Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with their closest relatives.
keep in touch with 与……保持联系(可以用stay,get等其他动词)

需要注意的是run out 一般没有被动态,如果一样东西被耗尽了,则用sth. run out

lose heart 失望,丧失信心/勇气,泄气,灰心
Seeing that the enemy was much stronger than themselves, the soldiers lost heart at once.
Lose one’s heart to sb./sth.表示喜欢上了某人/某物
