A couple was treated for injuries at Mission Hospital after they were attacked by a black bear on Sept. 29 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, forcing closure of trails near the popular spot.
The man and woman, who live locally, were having a picnic on a grassy hill when they were warned by their dog’s barking that a bear was nearby. The dog, which was not on a chain, ran toward the bear while barking loudly. Likely annoyed by the dog, the bear acted defensively toward the dog and the couple. Over the next several minutes, there were repeated attacks by the bear while the couple were returning with their dog to the safety of their vehicle. The couple suffered hurts and scratches in the skirmish with the bear, but the dog was not harmed.
Autumn is one of the busiest times on the parkway for humans as millions travel the scenic byway that passes directly through Asheville to view the autumn leaves. The parkway is the most visited unit of the National Park Service, with 14.1 million visitors in 2020. The parkway is also a shelter for bears, since it provides their natural, forested habitat, and hunting is prohibited. This is also a critical feeding period for bears before they enter winter hibernation (冬眠). Visitors should be cautious and follow Bear Wise protocols (条约) while in bear country, including properly following food storage regulations, keeping pets controlled and remaining at a safe viewing distance from bears. If attacked by a black bear, fight back with any object available and remember that bears may view you and your pets as prey. Though rare, attacks on humans do occur, and can cause injuries or deaths.
24. Who warned the couple of the bear
A. Their guide. B. Their dog. C. A passer-by. D. A policeman.
25. What does the underlined word “skirmish” in paragraph 2 mean
A Competition. B. Communication. C. Fight. D. Crash.
26. Why did so many people go to the parkway
A. To see the bears. B. To look for shelters.
C. To hunt wildlife. D. To appreciate the autumn scenery.
27. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph
A. Live with wildlife in peace. B. Avoid visiting the Blue Ridge Parkway.
C. Fight back bears with any object available. D. Don't affect the animals' winter hibernation.

A new study has found that social media could be affecting the sleep of young adults.
The study is a project of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine. They found that young people who often use social media are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those who use social media less. The researchers say doctors should ask young adults about their use of social media when treating sleep issues.
“This is one of the first pieces of evidence that social media use really can influence your sleep,” said Jessica C Levenson. She was the lead author of a report on the study.
The researchers set out to examine the connection between social media use and sleep among young adults. Levenson noted that these young adults are possibly the first “generation to grow up with social media”.
The researchers wanted to find out how often young people used social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Credit and Tumbler. For the study, they gave questionnaires to nearly 1,800 adults, aged 19 to 32.On average, members of the study group used social media sites one hour a day. They also visited various social media 30 times per week.
Thirty percent of the study’s participants reported having serious problems with sleeping. Those people who used social media a lot were three times more likely to have a sleep disorder. And those who spent the most time on social media were two times as likely to suffer from sleep disturbances. Levenson said, “The number of times a person visits social media is a better predictor of sleep problems than overall time spent on social media.” “If this is true, then practices that stop such behaviors may be the most effective,” she added.
28. What are doctors advised to do when treating young adults’ sleep problems
A. Survey their eating habits. B. Give them less medicine.
C Ask them the use of social media. D. Know about their living conditions.
29. How did the researchers mainly carry out the study
A. By doing online research. B. By doing questionnaires.
C. By comparing with the elderly. D. By collecting information from magazines.
30. How many young adults in the study have serious problems with sleeping
A. Nearly 1,200. B. Around 900. C. More than 500. D. Less than 300.
31. What can be inferred from the text
A. Using computers less helps avoid sleep problems.
B. People depend on social media to treat sleep problems.
C. Using social media is necessarily to cause a sleep disorder.
D. Sleep problems can be relieved by shortening social media time.

The walking, park-touring, and dancing robots made by Boston Dynamics have been darlings of the internet for years, as they danced from labs to Softbank and most recently Hyundai, while owners tried to figure out how to get them off the dance floor and into the factory. Michael Graham Richard showed the family of robots doing all kinds of things a few years ago, but this new video that starts off with two Atlas robots is just amazing. It's designed to assist emergency rescue (紧急救援) workers in search-and-rescue operations, performing tasks such as shutting off gas, opening doors, and operating powered equipment in environments where humans cannot survive.
But Atlas has never really been out of the lab. In fact, very few of Boston Dynamics robots have been used for work. But after they were bought by Japanese investor Softbank in 2017, they had to go out and get a real job, and Spot, who also dances in the video is the first commercial offering. There are about 400 of them out in the field now. You can buy one for $75,000 and use it as a platform for many different functions (功能), from checking for gas leaks to working for bomb groups, although that did not work out too well. But with that robotic arm option, it looks like it might be able to bring you coffee.
The last robot to join the dance party was Handle, which looked less impressive because of its use of wheels instead of legs. Now that it has been sold to a real manufacturing company, we can probably expect Hyundai to pay off the money to make real working, instead of dancing robots.
32. Why are Atlas robots amazing
A. They can protect the environment. B. They can do dangerous work.
C. They can walk into factories. D. They can dance very well.
33. What can we learn about Spot
A. It just exists in the video. B. It is developed by Softbank.
C. It is the first one to go into market. D. Its single function makes it less attractive.
34. Why is Handle less impressive
A. It has two flat feet. B. It moves by wheels.
C. It can't bring you coffee. D. It assists emergency rescue.
35. What is Handle expected to do in Hyundai
A. Develop new robots. B. Pay off Hyundai's debts.
C. Make people entertained. D. Do some practical jobs.

A long time ago, people lived happily under the rule of a king. The people of the kingdom were very happy as they led a very happy life with wealth and no misfortunes.
Once, the king decided to go visiting historical places and pilgrim (朝圣者) centres at distant places. He decided to travel on foot to interact with his people.
People of distant places were very happy to have a conversation with their king. They were proud that their king had a kind heart.
After several weeks of travel, the king returned to the palace. He was quite happy that he had visited many pilgrim centres and seen his people leading a happy life.
However, he had one regret. He had great pain in his feet as it was his first trip on foot covering a long distance. He complained to his ministers that the roads weren’t comfortable and that they were very stony. He could not stand the pain. He said that he was very worried about the people who had to walk along those roads as it would be painful for them, too!
Considering all this, he ordered his servants to cover the roads in the whole country with leather (皮革) so that the people of his kingdom could walk comfortably.
The king’s ministers were surprised to hear his order as it would mean that thousands of cows would have to be killed in order to get a large quantity of leather. And it would also cost a huge amount of money.

C. Ask them the use of social media.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. D

33 What can we learn about Spot
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. B 35. D

The minister said, “Instead of covering the roads with leather, why don’t you just have a piece of leather cut in right shape to cover your feet It is easier to make shoes than to cover the roads.” The king was very surprised by his suggestion and praised the wisdom of the minister. Then he ordered his servants to make a pair of leather shoes for him and requested all his countrymen also to wear leather shoes.
