Pat McGee noticed her daughter hadn’t returned to the dentist’s waiting room just before her surgery (外科手术) was supposed to start. She walked to the bathroom and found Jessica32, there, crying. “We’re going to say goodbye to the old Jessica,” she said. “And hi to the new Jessica.”Jessica, from St. Louis, US, had been wishing for this day since high school, when the bullying (欺凌) about her teeth started. Now that it was finally happening, she was nervous.
It was a social media post two months ago that got her there. Someone posted a photo of Jessica with a comment about her overbite—a serious problem that affects the teeth. The post was shared many times with many people making unkind remarks about her appearance.
The bullies didn’t know the road Jessica had traveled. She underwent nine operations on her ears from age 2 to 12 years old. She was almost deaf in her right ear. Her adult teeth didn’t start coming in until she was 11 or 12, and doctors couldn’t figure out why they were pushed outward. It got worse as she got older. Jessica had been trying for years to get her teeth fixed, but it was always too costly.
When her story got out, dentists wanted to help her. One of them, Maryann Udy, got in contact with Jessica and offered her new smile free of charge. The surgery was long and complicated. It took weeks for the swelling (肿胀) to go down and several months before Jessica’s new smile was ready.
Later that year, she looked at her old photos online and smiled. “I loved her,” she said. She’s grateful to be in less pain, to be on the path to a new smile. Sometimes, though, it feels like something is missing from who she was. Still, she loves taking selfies (自拍) and admiring her new appearance. “I looked good before,” she said. “I look even better now.”
24. Why didn’t Jessica appear before the surgery
A. She was too excited to face it.
B. She was anxious due to the long-time wishing.
C. She was hesitant because of those bad memories.
D. She was not sure about the success of the surgery.
25. What can we learn from the passage
A. Jessica couldn’t afford the surgery.
B. Her overbite was related to her car problem.
C. Jessica underwent nine operations on her teeth.
D. A photo of Jessica was posted online to seek help.
26. According to the underlined sentence, what do you think is missing
A. Jessica’s confidence. B. Jessica’s old photos online.
C. Jessica’s individuality. D. The bullying about Jessica’s teeth.
27. What could be the best title for the passage
A. A new smile B. A free surgery C. A lucky post D. Face-to-face with bullying
B 25. A 26. C 27. A
根据第一段中“Jessica, from St. Louis, US, had been wishing for this day since high school, when the bullying(欺凌) about her teeth started. Now that it was finally happening, she was nervous.(来自美国圣路易斯的Jessica从高中起就一直希望这一天,当时因为牙齿就开始受到欺凌。现在事情终于发生了,她很紧张。)”可知,Jessica在手术前没有出现是因为长期的愿望,她很焦虑紧张。故选B项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Jessica had been trying for years to get her teeth fixed, but it was always too costly.(Jessica多年来一直在努力修复牙齿,但总是太贵了。)” 故选A项。
根据上文“She’s grateful to be in less pain, to be on the path to a new smile. (她很感激能少些痛苦,在通往新微笑的道路上。)”以及下文“Still, she loves taking selfies(自拍) and admiring her new appearance. ‘I looked good before,’ she said. ‘I look even better now.’(尽管如此,她还是喜欢自拍,欣赏自己的新形象。‘我以前看起来不错,’她说。‘我现在看起来更好了。’)”可知,她手术后乐观了许多,还是喜欢自拍,不仅喜欢以前的自己,也喜欢现在的自己。所以画线句“Sometimes, though, it feels like something is missing from who she was.(但有时候,她觉得她好像少了些什么。)”
通读全文,根据第一段中“And hi to the new Jessica.(向新的Jessica问好。)”和第四段中“One of them, Maryann Udy, got in contact with Jessica and offered her new smile free of charge.(其中一位名叫Maryann Udy,她与杰西卡取得了联系,并免费为她提供了新的笑容。)”以及最后一段中“She’s grateful to be in less pain, to be on the path to a new smile.(她很感激能少些痛苦,在通往新微笑的道路上。)” 故选A项。
C
Have you heard of the term “tweenager” It’s a slang (俚语) word used in the UK to describe children between about ten and twelve years old. They are between being a junior and a teenager. Why do the press and media refer to kids in this way
Well, more and more companies now create products and services for tweenagers. They seem to tell us that tweenagers must have more money, freedom and influence upon their parents than they’ve ever had before.
Most children in the UK today get more pocket money than kids did a decade ago. Despite problems happening fairly often and regularly in the economy, parents generally have more money to give than before, since they are having fewer children on average than in the past. In addition, a higher divorce (离婚) rate in the UK makes parents try to make up by buying presents for their children. It’s a bad habit for both parents and children to get into, but parents are under constant pressure from commercial marketing and the requests of their children.
You may wonder how tweenagers have more freedom than previous generations. Well, UK children today are very media- and computer-literate. They have access to much more information about life and the world. They may have experienced a lot in life as well. With such sophistication (老于世故) at such a young age, it’s no wonder tweenagers are able to influence their parents.
Now UK tweenagers are also very fashion-conscious and concerned about their images. In a world of television programs that promise immediate success and fame at a young age, some people think it’s extremely important to look fashionable.
So what does tweenage fashion look like It’s lots of brightly colored materials, particularly pink, and usually plain, not patterned. There are plenty of bows, necklaces and bracelets, too.
But can it really be healthy for us to encourage kids to be like adults at a young age Are we stealing childhoods in return for a bit of profit Well, the UK government is certainly concerned, and for that reason has strict laws preventing companies from clearly and openly marketing their products and services to children.
28. What is the use of the first paragraph
A. To explain a concept and bring up the topic.
B. To tell the difference between a junior and a teenager.
C. To show why people in the UK prefer to use the slang.
D. To state how the slang came into being and make a summary.
29. Why do tweenagers get more pocket money from their parents
A. They are the only child of their parents.
B. They have to pay more for their schooling.
C. Their parents make more money than before.
D. Their parents try to make up for their absence.
30. Why do tweenagers pay more attention to their appearance
A. They are afraid of being laughed at by others.
B. They have less freedom than previous generations.
C. They wish to become successful and famous quickly.
D. They are encouraged to be like adults at a young age.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards tweenagers’ present lifestyle
A. Unconcerned. B. Negative. C. Supportive. D. Tolerant.
A 29. D 30. C 31. B
第一段“Have you heard of the term ‘tweenager’ It’s a slang (俚语) word used in the UK to describe children between about ten and twelve years old. They are between being a junior and a teenager. Why do the press and media refer to kids in this way (你听说过 ‘tweenager’ 这个词吗 这是英国的一个俚语,用来形容十到十二岁的孩子。他们介于初中生和青少年之间。为什么新闻和媒体用这种方式称呼孩子呢 )”中解释了“tweenager”的含义,同时最后用一个问题“Why do the press and media refer to kids in this way ”引出下文关于tweenager话题。 故选A。
根据第三段中“In addition, a higher divorce (离婚) rate in the UK makes parents try to make up by buying presents for their children.(此外,英国较高的离婚率让父母试图通过给孩子买礼物来弥补。)”
根据倒数第三段“Now UK tweenagers are also very fashion-conscious and concerned about theirimages. In a world of television programs that promise immediate success and fame at a young age, some people think it’s extremely important to look fashionable.(现在,英国的青少年也非常注重时尚,关心自己的形象。在一个充斥着承诺年轻时就能立即获得成功和名声的电视节目的世界里,有些人认为看起来很时尚是非常重要的。)”可推知,他们希望迅速成功和出名,所以更注重自己的外表。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But can it really be healthy for us to encourage kids to be like adults at a youngage Are we stealing childhoods in return for a bit of profit (但是,我们鼓励孩子在很小的时候就像成年人一样,这真的是健康的吗 我们是不是为了一点点好处而偷走了孩子的童年 )”可知,作者并不支持十到十二岁的青少年现在的生活方式,对此持否定态度。故选B。
D
You might see loneliness as someone(usually an old person) sits alone, staring into the distance or out of a window. Such images are deceptive. Researchers have actually found that those who report experiencing loneliness the most are young people, and such images of solitude (孤独) don’t match the experience of loneliness during youth. Those years are typically spent surrounded by other people, at school or at work.
Loneliness during youth can be defined as a negative feeling about a difference between the relationships we have and those we want. This means we might feel lonely in the company of others if we don’t feel they understand us or share common interests with us. Although loneliness is often a difficult experience, it can help us to reconnect and rethink our relationships so that we can build(or seek out) the ones that; mean the most to us.
There are certain features of youth that tend to give rise to loneliness. In youth, our friendships are increasingly important in providing us with emotional support. Research shows that young people have higher expectations of their friendships than adults do; they show a preference for larger friend groups, more companionship and higher frequency of contact with friends. When we consider that loneliness serves the function of keeping us safe within our social world, it makes sense that the feeling like “we do not ‘fit-in’ ” as so many young people feel, gives rise to loneliness. Another reason is our developing sense of self discovering who we are. That often means changes to values or beliefs. It can be challenging when your friends are going through the same process, but might not follow the same path as you. Young people often report feeling lonely at school, while home is a comfortable space. But when there are difficulties at home—such as arguments or tension with family members and the departure of supportive family members—these can make the feeling of loneliness worse.
If you find yourself feeling lonely and it seems like nothing is helping, do not give up hope. It is likely that you have not yet found the strategy that works for you. Here are some practical steps you can try, starting with what you can do on your own and moving on to ways to connect with others.
32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “deceptive” in paragraph 1
A. unrelated B. unfortunate C. shameful D. misleading
33. What does loneliness of young people usually refer to
A. Not having a preference for dealing with tough things alone.
B. Not having friends or family in company when in trouble.
C. Not having interest in others’ school life with in the social world.
D. Not having positive attitude to the present relationships with others.
34. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as the reason of young people’s loneliness
A. Difficulties at home. B. Unfamiliar environments.
C. Lack of interactions with friends. D. Discovery of self-identity.
35. What will the text probably talk about next
A. Suggestions on how to beat loneliness.
B. More reasons that cause the feeling of loneliness.
C. Strategies to deal with the arguments or tension in family.
D. Ways to face the departure of supportive family members.
D 33. D 34. B 35. A
根据第一段最后两句话“Researchers have actually found that those who report experiencing loneliness the most are young people, and such images of solitude(孤独) don’t match the experience of loneliness during youth. Those years are typically spent surrounded by other people, at school or at work.
根据第二段第一、二句话“Loneliness during youth can be defined as a negative feeling about a difference between the relationships we have and those we want. This means we might feel lonely in the company of others if we don’t feel they understand us or share common interests with us.

这通常意味着价值观或信仰的改变)”以及最后一句话“But when there are difficulties at home—such as arguments or tension with family members and the departure of supportive family members—these can make the feeling of loneliness worse.(但是,当家里出现困难时——比如与家庭成员的争吵或紧张关系,以及支持你的家庭成员的离开——这些都会加重孤独感)”可知,年轻人孤独的原因包括自我认同的发现,渴望更多的朋友间的互动和家里的困难。

A 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. It was a jewel box. But the price—five dollars—was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. However, he opened the door and went inside. Standing proud and straight, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.
“I will raise the five dollars and not tell anybody,” Reuben said to himself.
Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in sacks (麻布袋) from a local factory. Sometimes the sacks were abandoned, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two sacks and sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran home. Near his house stood the ancient barn (谷仓). Reuben found a soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the top of the barn and hid the tin.
All summer long, despite housework at home Reuben kept to his secret task. Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window sustained him.
Mother’s Day had come! He uncovered the tin can, poured the coins out and began to count. He needed 20 cents more. He had to find four more sacks and sell them before the day ended.
Towards evening Reuben arrived at the factory. The sack buyer was about to lock up.
“Mister! Please don’t close up yet.”
The man turned and saw Reuben, dirty and sweat stained.
“Come back tomorrow, boy.”
“Please, Mister. I have to sell the sacks now — please.”

The man heard a slight shake in Reuben’s voice and could tell he was close to tears. “Why do you need this money so badly ” “It’s a secret.” The man took the sacks, reached into his pocket and put four coins in Reuben’s hand. Reuben murmured a thank you and ran home. Then, holding the tin can in his hand, he headed for the shop. “I have the money.” he told the owner proudly. The man went to the window and fetched Reuben’s treasure. He wiped the dust off and gently wrapped it in brown paper.
Then he placed the parcel(包裹)in Reuben’s hands. Racing home, Reuben burst through the front door. “Here, Mum! Here!” Reuben exclaimed as he ran to her excitedly. Then he placed a small box in her work roughened hand. Mum unwrapped it carefully. A blue-velvet jewel box appeared. Mum gently lifted the lid, with tears welling up in her eyes. She had never received such a precious gift. A smile flashing across her face, she held Reuben tightly in her arms.

Pat McGee noticed her daughter hadn’t returned to the dentist’s waiting room just before her surgery (外科手术) was supposed to start. She walked to the bathroom and found Jessica,32, there, crying.
A Jessica’s confidence. B. Jessica’s old photos online.
C. Jessica’s individuality. D. The bullying about Jessica’s teeth.
27. What could be the best title for the passage
A. A new smile B. A free surgery C. A lucky post D. Face-to-face with bullying

A To explain a concept and bring up the topic.
B. Negative. C. Supportive. D. Tolerant.
