I remember doing the household chores to help my mother when I was nine. I hated changing the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) bag and picking up things the machine did not suck up. Twenty years later, in 1978, with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless one.
Easier said than done, of course. I didn’t realize that I would spend the next five years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (样机). By the time I made my 15th prototype, my third child was born. By 2,627, my wife and I were really counting our pennies. By 3,727, my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.
In the early 1980s, I started trying to get licensing agreements for my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (滤网). No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business. But soon after, the companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine. I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner.
I was still in financial difficulties until 1993, when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production. Within two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.
Today, I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. Nothing beats the excitement of invention,
4. What drove the author to make a bagless vacuum cleaner
A. His willingness to help mom.
B. His curiosity about machines.
C. His trouble in doing family chores.
D His discontent with existing cleaners.
5. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A. The help from the author’s wife.
B. The financial problems of the family.
C. The tough process of the new invention.
D. The procedures of making a bagless cleaner.
6. Why did the companies refuse to license the author’s technology
A. They thought they might suffer loss.
B. They considered it not good enough.
C. They faced legal problems themselves.
D. They had begun making such machines.
7. What lesson may the author learn from the experience
A. Think twice before acting.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. A good beginning makes a good ending.

For many years doctors have warned us about the dangers of stress (压力) and have given us advice about how to cut down our stress levels. Everyone agrees that long-term stress, for example having to look after someone who has a chronic (慢性的) illness, or stressful situations where there is nothing we can do, for example being stuck in a traffic jam, should be avoided whenever possible. However, some medical experts now believe that certain kinds of stress may actually be good for us.
Dr Marios Kyriazis, an anti-ageing expert, points out that what he calls "good stress” is beneficial to our health and may, in fact, help us stay young and attractive and even live longer. Dr Kyriazis says that “good stress” can strengthen our natural defences which protect us from illnesses common among older people, such as Alzheimer's and heart problems.
According to Dr Kyriazis, running for a bus or having to work to meet a deadline are examples of “good stress”, that is situations with short-term or low stress. The stress usually makes us react quickly, and gives us a sense of achievement — we did it! However, in both situations, the stress damages the cells(细胞) in our body or brain and they start to break down. But then the cells own repair mechanism “switches on”and it produces proteins which repair the damaged cells and remove harmful chemicals that can gradually cause disease. In fact, the body's response is greater than is needed to repair the damage, so it actually makes the cells stronger than they were before.
“As the body gets older, this self-repair mechanism of the cells starts to slow down,” says Dr Kyriazis.“The best way to keep the process working efficiently is to ‘exercise’ it, in the same way you would exercise your muscles to keep them strong. This means having a certain amount of stress in our lives.”Other stressful activities that Kyriazis suggests as being good stress include redecorating a room in your house over the weekend, packing your suitcase in a hurry to reach the airport on time, or shopping for a dinner party during your lunch break.
So next time your boss tells you that she wants to see the report finished and on her desk in 45 minutes, don't worry; just think of it as “good stress” which will benefit your long-term health!
8. What is Dr Kyriazis' opinion probably based on
A. How to get a sense of achievement.
B. How to cut down our stress levels.
C. The benefits of doing physical exercise.
D. The relationship between stress and health.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The daily stress. B. Long-term stress.
C. The increasing stress. D. Short-term or low stress.
10. According to Dr Kyriazis, which of the following may be “good stress”
A. Being stuck in a traffic jam.
B. Packing for a trip at the last minute.
C. Being late for work for several days.
D. Looking after a patient with heart trouble.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Stress beats success B. Stress attracts illness
C. Get stressed, stay young D. Less stress, better health
D
Recent studies have shown that challenging your brain, by spurring (刺激) the brain to create new patterns, is very important to keep your brain active and healthy as you age. Lifelong learning is a health club for our minds, bodies and spirits. This is why we parents should also teach our children to be lifelong learners. Dr. Marilyn Price-Mitchell, an American psychologist, and youth development expert, shares some ways for us to do this.
1. Ask questions.
When your child asks you a question, don't answer it straight away. Instead, help him or her bring up “questions that pique their curiosity.” This way, we help children make connections between what they're learning at school and the world beyond their classroom. We also show them that learning does not, and should not, end when one is “done with school” — it's actually a lifelong process!
2. Let them fail.
Our kids love learning about different scientific concepts (概念) via The Magic School Bus videos on YouTube. And one of the characters, Miss Frizzle (the science teacher) always says this phrase: “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.” I always quote (引述) her when the kids say they're afraid to do or learn something because they might do it wrong or make a mistake. If we don't allow our kids to fail, they won't be able to learn to “use mistakes and failures to make lifelong learning easier,” as Dr. Price-Mitchell says.
3. Learn through experience.
This is very true for all of us, especially children. In the words of Dr. Price-Mitchell, “Learning through experience, not just from books, is one of the best ways to give the youth the skills they need for lifelong learning, living, and working in the 21st century.”
Of course, we should also set an example for our children — by learning continuously, and expanding our knowledge and experiences.
12. What does the underlined word “pique” in the text probably mean
A. Change.
B. Awaken.
C. Balance.
D. Prevent.
13. What's the author's attitude to what Miss Frizzle always says
A. Worried.
B. Doubtful.
C. Uncaring.
D. Supportive.
14. Which of the following shows the importance of learning through experience
A. Learning is not child's play; we cannot learn without pain.
B. It is not that I'm so smart. But I stay with the questions much longer.
C. If you don't learn to think when you are young, you may never learn.
D. Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.
15. In which part of a newspaper will the text most probably appear
A. Health.
B. Culture.
C. Education.
D. Popular science.

Chris looked at the clock again. Only five more minutes before school let out.
Just now,his Creative Learning teacher, Mrs. Griswell asked them to be prepared to share their favorite hobby with the class on Friday. And they were supposed to bring samples for show.
Chris sighed. No way am I going to talk about my favorite hobby, he thought. His older brother, Wes,laughed at him about it enough-and his dad didn't think much of it,either.
On the bus,Chris heard others talking about the “hobby thing".Brian said he was going to bring his bowling trophies(保龄球奖杯)。Chris turned back around in his seat so he wouldn't have to talk to him anymore.
"Don't believe him,"Nick whispered."He's the worst bowler I've ever seen.He borrows the trophies from his dad,I guess. He's really fake."
At home,Chris puled out his bores of baseball cards. He liked baseball, even played some. But his really hobby let him express things from his imagination, and that’s what he liked most.Sorting through his cards, Chris began choosing some of the best ones.Yet he did not feel right about what he had decided.
Tuesday passed. Chris gathered his baseball supplies and put them in a grocery bag marked “My Favorite Hobby".He was ready for Friday, but some:thing still felt wrong. He walked out of his room, ignoring the sketchpad(草图本)on his desk.
Wednesday. After school Chris sat at the kitchen table with a sandwich, but he wasn't hungry. He didn't want to be fake like Brian, but he wasn't sure he had the courage to tell everyone his real hobby.
What would the guys think of him
He chewed his sandwich slowly, thinking of Grandma. She was the reason he'd gotten interested in his hobby in the first place.“You have talent,” Grandma had told him proudly, admiring his work. And that felt really good.
Suddenly,Chris knew what he had to do.He dropped his sandwich on the plate and rushed to the phone.“Hi,Grandma, it's Chris.I need your help.”

D. His discontent with existing cleaners.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B
根据文章第一段末尾句内容“I hated changing the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) bag and picking up things the machine did not suck up. Twenty years later, in 1978, with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless one.( 我讨厌换真空吸尘器的袋子,讨厌把吸尘器吸不进去的东西捡起来。二十年后,也就是1978年,我对这台机器的工作方式一直很反感,于是决定做一台无袋的。)”可知,对于真空吸尘器的反感导致了作者研制一种无袋吸尘器。故选D项。
【5题详解】
主旨大意题。通读文章第二段内容,可知其段落结构为总分总结构,首句内容“Easier said than done, of course.( 当然,说起来容易做起来难。)”和末尾句内容“These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.( 这是艰难时刻,但每一次失败都让我离解决问题更近了一步。)” C. The tough process of the new invention.(这项新发明的艰难过程。)
根据文章第三段内容“The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters. No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business.( 主要的吸尘器制造商建立了一种基于包装袋和过滤器利润的商业模式。没有人会批准我的想法,不是因为它不好,而是因为它不利于生意。)”可知,没人会认可作者的想法是因为真空吸尘器的包装袋和过滤器能够给商家带来盈利,而作者发明的无袋吸尘器会使商家失去原有的能够带来盈利的部分,因此商家担心其不能带来盈利反而可能会导致损失。故选A项。
Today, I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. B. Failure is the mother of success.( 失败是成功之母。)
2. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A. The help from the author’s wife.
B. The financial problems of the family.
C. The tough process of the new invention.
D. The procedures of making a bagless cleaner.
因此结合首末两个主题句:“Easier said than done, of course.( 当然,说起来容易做起来难。)”和“These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.( 这是艰难的时刻,但每一次失败都让我离解决问题更近了一步。)” C. The tough process of the new invention.
C
D 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据第二段第一句“Dr Marios Kyriazis, an anti-ageing expert, points out that what he. calls "good stress" is beneficial to our health and may,in fact, help us stayyoung and attractive and even live longer.”(抗衰老专家 Marios Kyriazis 博士指出,他所谓的“良好压力”有益于我们的健康,事实上,可能帮助我们保持年轻,有魅力,甚至活得更久。)
根据上文中“According to Dr Kyriazis, running for a bus or having to work to meet a deadline are examples of “good stress”, that is situations with short-term or low stress. The stress usually makes us react quickly, and gives us a sense of achievement — we did it!(就是短期或低压力的情况。压力通常会让我们反应迅速,给我们一种成就感——我们做到了!)根据上文‘“In fact, the body's response is greater than is needed to repair the damage”可知,事实上,人体的反应大于修复损伤所需的反应,所以短期或低压力实际上使细胞比以前更强壮。)可以推知,此处“it”指的是“短期或低压力”。故选D。
3. 推理判断题。根据“Other stressful activities that Kyriazis suggests as feeing good stress includeredecoratinga roomin your house over the weekend, packing your suitcasein ahurry toreach the airport on time,or shopping for a dinner party during your lunch break.”(Kyriazis 建议的其他有压力的活动包括感觉良好的压力,周末在家里装修房间,快速打包你的西装准时到达机场,或者在午休时间去参加一个晚宴。)
根据第一段“However, some medical experts now believe that certain kinds of stress may actually be good for us.” 根据第二段“Dr Marios Kyriazis, an anti-ageing expert, points out that what he calls "good stress” is beneficial to our health and may, in fact, help us stay young and attractive and even live longer. ”抗衰老专家马里奥斯·基里亚齐斯博士指出,他所说的“良好的压力”对我们的健康有益,事实上,可能有助于我们保持年轻、有魅力,甚至活得更长。所以短文的最佳标题为“ 承受压力,保持年轻”。故选C。

B 13. D 14. D 15. C

故填will prefer。

Para 1:
"Are you ready, Chris " Mrs. Griswell asked and everyone in the class turned to look at him.
Chris walked to the front of the classroom, clutching his grocery bag. His heart was pounding, and his legs felt shaky. "Go ahead," Mrs. Griswell said, smiling. Chris nodded. So he began. "I design things. I mean. I design clothes and accessories. There they were-the giggles and the sneers. "I'm a fashion designer." He brought out his sketchbook and flipped through pages showing his designs for jackets and caps, pants and shirts. There were still a few snickers.
Para 2:
When Chris pulled out a head-band(额带) he designed, the class became quiet. He designed black and blue pattern in the band and attached a small stone in the place of forehead. For girls, it was pink and purple with a small seashell. He heard someone say, "Cool!" . Few of the classmates nodded enthusiastically. "My grandma designs clothes, too. he explained feeling burst of hope. "She helped and we made headbands for everyone!" The whole class buzzed with excitement Chris grinned. Now things finally felt right!
