Like any hike of this nature, you should be prepared for the adventure in the desert: First, hike with a partner for safety. I enjoy hiking with family members and close friends. Second, carry a cell phone with you. However, keep in mind that you might not get any signal in some places, so don’t depend on it. Third, be sure to have the right clothing and shoes or boots for the hike. Light, breathable clothing is the best during the summer, along with the hat and strong hiking shoes. Forth, carry plenty of water. Having a few snacks can give you energy, too. Fifth, take a small first-aid box with you, particularly on longer hikes, in case you get injured. Sixth, pack a detailed map of the area you’re hiking, along with a compass or a GPS to locate your position. And finally, take nothing home with you except pictures and memories. You can protect these areas by leaving all rocks, flowers, and other objects for future visitors.

While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to see Death Valley National Park on the California-Nevada border. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, “It’s very hot especially when there’s a gentle wind. You would think maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service’s website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.
24. What do most visitors do in Death Valley
A. Cool themselves in time. B. Do lots of physical exercises.
C. Stay away from park rangers. D. Carry dryers with themselves.
25. Why does the author mention the 65-year-old man in paragraph 2
A. To encourage the elderly to travel more.
B. To express admiration for mountain climbers.
C. To advise people to tour Death Valley more often.
D. To show the danger of traveling in Death Valley.
26. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Death Valley
A. Its covering area. B. Its attractive spots.
C. The reason why it is so hot. D. The service of its park’s website.
27. What can be inferred about Death Valley from the last two paragraphs
A. It has a short history. B. It is worth visiting.
C. It draws fewer and fewer tourists. D. It is unsuitable for viewing sunrise.
A 25. D 26. C 27. B
细节理解题,根据第一段“The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles. (这个公园被认为是地球上最热的地方。上周末,气温攀升至53.33℃。在每年的这个时候,大多数游客只会到公园的任何一个地方很短的距离,然后就会回到他们的车里享受凉爽的空气)”可知,游玩死亡谷国家公园时,大部分游客都会及时给自己降温。故选A。
根据第二段“Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month. (来自公园管理局的早期信息显示,在全国424个国家公园中,今年至少有4人死于与高温有关的原因。其中包括一名来自圣地亚哥的65岁男子,本月早些时候,他被发现死于死亡谷)”可推知,作者提及这位65岁的老人是为了说明在死亡谷国家公园游玩的危险之处,故选D。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service’s website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley. (公园管理局的网站上说,死亡谷是一个低于海平面的狭窄地区,周围环绕着高山。干燥的空气和小的植物覆盖让阳光加热了公园的表面。然后热量被困在山谷里)”可知,故本段主要讲的是死亡谷如此炽热的原因。故选C。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot. (尽管如此,死亡谷的几个地区仍然吸引着游客。由盐滩组成的巴德沃特盆地被认为是整个北美的最低点。183米高的乌贝赫比陨石坑可以追溯到2000多年前。扎布里斯基角是观赏日出的好地方)”以及最后一段“Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said. (来自印第安纳波利斯的游客Josh Miller也有这种感觉,他到目前为止已经去过20个国家公园了。“天气很热,但风景很棒,”他说)”可推断,Death Valley是一个值得游玩的地方。故选B。
C
Clarence DeMar would train for races by running to and from his job in Boston, up to 14 miles a day. His hard work paid off. He won the 1911 Boston Marathon and competed in the next year’s Olympics.
But at the time, many people and medical experts thought prolonged (持续很久的) exercise was dangerous. A doctor, detecting a heart murmur (杂音), warned DeMar to quit the sport.
DeMar proved them all wrong—both during his lifetime and after—in ways that helped change people’s minds about the benefits of exercise.
He became one of the most noticeable distance runners of his day, competing in two more Olympics and winning the Boston Marathon a record seven times between 1911 and 1930. He kept winning races well into his 40s. The press called him “Mr. DeMarathon”.
After he died of cancer at age 70, two Boston-area experts took a look at his heart. What they found were different from all those terrifying warnings. Not only was DeMar’s heart in good shape, but his arteries(动脉) were also two to three times the size of a typical person’s — reducing the risk of a fatal blockage. As for that heart murmur the doctor warned DeMar about Experts say, “We now know that highly trained athletes often have a heart murmur, and it’s normal.”
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1961, made the front page of The Boston Globe. “It was one of those first studies that taught us that the human body can really handle, very healthfully, lots and lots of exercise,” said Dr. Aaron Baggish, a professor at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and the former medical director of the Boston Marathon.
The popularity of running exploded in the decades after DeMar’s death, as further research backed that up. It’s now well-established that regular exercise makes us healthier and prolongs our lives.
The current national guidelines recommend at least two and a half to five hours of moderate exercise like walking each week, or an hour and fifteen minutes to two and a half hours of vigorous activity like running—and research suggests more is generally better.
28. Why did the doctor advise DeMar to give up prolonged exercise
A. He was in poor health. B. He had a heart murmur.
C. He must focus on his job. D. He was unable to finish it.
29. What was DeMar’s attitude to the doctor’s warning
A. Favorable. B. Worried. C. Mistrustful. D. Unclear.
30. What did the two Boston experts find about DeMar
A. His heart was in bad shape. B. He died from too much exercise.
C. He suffered from artery blockage. D. He benefited from lots of exercise.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Advice on exercise. B. Several forms of exercise.
C. The advantages of walking. D. The purpose of the research.
B 29. C 30. D 31. A
根据第二段“A doctor, detecting a heart murmur (杂音), warned DeMar to quit the sport.(一名医生发现DeMar有心脏杂音,警告他退出这项运动)”可知,医生检查出DeMar的心脏有杂音,所以建议他放弃长时间的锻炼。
根据第三段“DeMar proved them all wrong—both during his lifetime and after—in ways that helped change people’s minds about the benefits of exercise.( DeMar在他有生之年和之后都证明了他们都是错误的,这帮助改变了人们对运动好处的看法)”可推知,DeMar对于医生的警告持“不信任”的态度。
根据第五段“Not only was DeMar’s heart in good shape, but his arteries(动脉) were also two to three times the size of a typical person’s — reducing the risk of a fatal blockage.(DeMar不仅心脏状况良好,而且他的动脉也有正常人的两到三倍大,从而降低了发生致命阻塞的风险)”可知,两位波士顿专家发现,DeMar得益于大量的锻炼。
根据最后一段“The current national guidelines recommend at least two and a half to five hours of moderate exercise like walking each week, or an hour and fifteen minutes to two and a half hours of vigorous activity like running—and research suggests more is generally better.(目前的国家指南建议每周至少进行2.5到5小时的适度运动,比如散步,或者进行1小时15分钟到2个半小时的剧烈运动,比如跑步——研究表明,运动时间越长越好)”可知,最后一段主要讲的是关于运动的一些建议。故选A。
D
Teenagers who travel around the world alone have been making headlines quite often. A young person alone in a dangerous situation attracts attention and supporters. Young sailors also attract various views. For example, Jessica Watson was asked by the government to call off her solo trip across the ocean, yet the Prime Minister (总理) called her “a hero for young Australians” when she returned. It seems views are poles apart on the ability and independence of young people.
Some experts tell us that teenage brains are likely to make wrong judgments. But such ideas often do not apply to specific individuals (个体) . Between the ages of 14 and 18, teenagers differ greatly in their abilities. The amount of independence that each is allowed should be determined not simply by their ages but by discussion with the related, responsible adults. Some teens are certainly inexperienced and make childish mistakes, but the ones who attempt dangerous journeys normally do so by winning the confidence of hard-headed and experienced adult supporters.
But it’s also wrong to think that any 16-year-old can make a hit as Jessica Watson. Watson calls herself “a common girl who had a dream”. Her purpose is to encourage teenagers but this idea can have the opposite effect of making them feel not good enough because great achievements are beyond them. Should all teens have such wild dreams Actually, individuals face different conditions that limit their dreams.
Teenagers who travel around the world alone should not be judged by preconceived (先入为主的) views about young people. Nor should young “common” teenagers feel pressure to long for extraordinary personal goals. In fact, I believe the example of solo sailing overstresses what an individual can do. The teenage years are when most of us “common” people learn that we can achieve great things in cooperation with others.
32. Why is Jessica Watson mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To set a heroic example for teenagers.
B. To point out the public’s interest in young people.
C. To introduce different opinions on teenagers’ adventures.
D. To show the Prime Minister disagreed with the government.
33. What can determine the amount of teenagers’ independence
A. Different journeys. B. Brain development.
C. Communication with adults. D. Confidence in themselves.
34. What does Watson mean by calling herself “a common girl who had a dream”
A. She likes dangerous journeys. B. Teenagers can make success.
C. She can accept she is common. D. Teenagers should go travelling.
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards teenagers’ act of travelling alone
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Uncertain.
C 33. C 34. B 35. A
根据文章第一段“For example, Jessica Watson was asked by the government to call off her solo trip across the ocean, yet the Prime Minister (总理) called her “a hero for young Australians” when she returned. It seems views are poles apart on the ability and independence of young people.(例如,杰西卡·沃森被政府要求取消她的航行,但当她回来时,总理称她为“澳大利亚年轻人的英雄”。人们似乎对年轻人的能力和独立性感到困惑)”可知,对于Jessica Watson的冒险行为人们的看法不一致,文章用这个例子为下文人们对年轻人冒险行为的不同看法进行铺垫。故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The amount of independence that each is allowed should be determined not simply by their ages but by discussion with the related, responsible adults.(每个人的独立程度不应该简单地由他们的年龄来决定,而应该通过与相关的、负责任的成年人讨论来决定。)”
根据文章第三段“Her purpose is to encourage teenagers but this idea can have the opposite effect of making them feel not good enough because great achievements are beyond them. (她的意图是鼓励青少年,但这个想法可能会产生相反的效果,让他们觉得自己不够好,因为伟大的成就超出了他们的能力范围)”可知,Jessica Watson说自己是一个有梦想的普通女孩的本意是想鼓励其他青少年也可以像她一样取得成功。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Teenagers who travel around the world alone should not be judged by preconceived (先入为主的)views about young people. Nor should young “common” teenagers feel pressure to long for extraordinary personal goals. In fact, I believe the example of solo sailing overstresses what an individual can do. The teenage years are when most of us “common” people learn that we can achieve great things in cooperation with others. (不应该用对年轻人先入为主的看法来评判独自环游世界的青少年。年轻的“普通”青少年也不应该感到渴望非凡的个人目标的压力。事实上,我认为单人航海的例子过分强调了个人主义。青少年时期是我们大多数“普通人”知道我们可以与他人合作取得伟大成就的时候)”可知,作者觉得独自一人旅行太过于强调个人主义了。因此作者对此行为持“质疑”的态度。故选A。

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It’s really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I’ll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!” (嘟囔),“I can not walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK. I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path.
“I’m still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

Paragraph 2:
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome!”.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She followed me, her mind wandering. Minutes later, we started to climb a steep slope. Jane sighed, dragging her legs behind me. I was surprised to find some rarely-seen trees and flowers, and took many photos but Jane showed no interest. She stopped and sat on a rock, thirsty, sweaty and bored. I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone,” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome!” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with indescribably wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight.“Anyone still wants her phone ” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let's hike around the lake today.” “Sure, get our backpack then,” I beamed, relieved and joyful.

Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes.

A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Uncertain.

Hiking is fun!” (嘟囔)“I can not walk that far.”
