C 18. B 19. A 20. A
Everyone knows that bees are busy. There is even a saying in English that one can be “as busy as a bee”. However, little is known about how bees play. Scientists have discovered one way that bees could relax after a busy day making honey—they play with balls. The scientists are from Queen Mary University of London. They did different tests on bees “playing” with different things. The insects particularly liked playing with small, wooden balls. The researchers said the way bees played was a little like how humans play. Younger bees rolled more balls than older bees, while adult males spent longer playing with balls than adult females. The ball-rolling bees are the first known insects to “play”.
The researchers experimented on 45 bees in a specially designed test area. The bees were given two options. The first choice was to fly or walk directly to get a sugary treat. The second choice was to get to the treat by going around different coloured wooden balls. Most of the bees decided to play with the balls and then get their treat. A researcher said the experiments showed that bees are more thoughtful than people believed. She said: “Bees are a million miles from the mindless, unfeeling creatures they are traditionally believed to be. ” She added that: “This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more complex than we might imagine. ”

Geoff Banks and Celesta Byrne met as part of an educational project to put British and American students in contact and they still keep in touch with each other.
Centenarians (百岁老人), Geoff Banks from Devon, Britain, and Celesta Byrne, from the US, started writing to each other at the age of 16 in 1938. The former engineer Geoff even kept in touch with Celesta during WWII. They, now, can talk to each other on the Internet.
They recently had their first call giving Geoff a break from putting pen to paper that he said he found difficult at his age. Despite having chatted for decades the pair have only ever met twice-first in 2002 while Geoff visited New York at the age of 80, and then again two years later. Celesta was living in New Jersey at that time, and then she moved to live near family in Texas.
Geoff said, “I had worked abroad for a number of years but had not been to the US for some time. Celesta was in New Jersey, so we decided to meet up in New York for a short Christmas trip. We just talked about daily lives and our families. In one of my early letters, I sent her a copy of a British paper in 1953 which had Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation (加冕) on the front of it.”
Despite having such a special relationship, the pair deny there was ever any romance there. Both have been married, with Geoff’s wife having passed away in 2011. Geoff is now a great grandfather, having sadly survived his daughter but still having three sons scattered across the world and many more grandchildren.
They felt grateful to the educational project, which gave them the chance of being friends. They are friends, like people who live next door. They value their friendship and think it’s nice to hear friends’ voices.
24. How did Geoff know Celesta
A. By a friend. B. By joining in a party.
C. By surfing the Internet. D. By an educational program.
25. What was Geoff before he retired
A. A teacher. B. A mechanic. C. An engineer. D. A soldier.
26. Where did Celesta live when she met Geoff for the second time
A. In New York. B. In New Jersey. C. In Texas. D. In Devon.
27. Which word can best describe the friendship between Geoff and Celesta
A. Lasting. B. Odd. C. Complex. D. Ordinary.

Bangladesh's floating gardens, built to grow food during flood seasons, could offer a continuous solution for parts of the world which are likely to suffer from flooding because of climate change, a new study has found.
Bangladesh's floating gardens began hundreds of years ago. The gardens are made from native plants that float in the rivers and operate almost like rafts (筏), rising and filling with the waters. Historically, they were used to continue growing food during rainy seasons when rivers were filled with water.
The farmers layer the plants about three feet deep, creating a version of raised-bed gardens that float in the water. Then, they plant vegetables inside those rafts. As the raft-plants rot away, they release nutrients, which help feed the vegetable plants.
But as climate change affected the volume of water in those rivers, the researchers wanted to understand whether Bangladesh's floating gardens could be a continuous farming practice. They interviewed farming families and found strong evidence that floating gardens provide stability, both in the amount of food available to feed rural populations and in a farming family's income.
They found that farmers typically use hybrid (杂交) seeds, which must be repurchased each year, to grow a diverse range of vegetables in the floating gardens. The gardens are also sensitive to pests, so farmers end up spending some money on both pesticides and fertilizers. But even with those expenses, they found, benefits outweighed costs. One farmer told the research team that he earns up to four times as much money from the gardens as from traditional rice fields.
However, before gaining profits, farmers often take out high-interest loans (贷款) to cover the investment costs of filling the beds and stocking them with plants. Luckily; there are also lower-interest loans from responsible government or non-governmental organizations, which could ease that burden.
28. How do vegetable plants grow according to the text
A. By absorbing nutrition from raft-plants. B. By taking shelter from climate change.
C. By living together with hybrid seeds. D. By moving up and down with raised beds.
29. What might be a reply from farming families interviewed
A. “Our life becomes tough when rivers flood.” B. “Fewer vegetables are planted when water rises.”
C. “We harvest much more food during rainy seasons.” D. “Climate change has little influence on our income.”
30. What does the underlined word “outweighed” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Affected. B. Brought. C. Beat. D. Equaled.
31. What can be inferred from the text
A. A solution to climate problem has been found. B. The gardens are built with rotted native plants.
C. Farmers earn more from traditional rice fields. D. Low-interest loans lighten the stress of farmers.
A 29. D 30. C 31. D
根据文章“they plant vegetables inside those rafts. As the raft-plants rot away, they release nutrients, which help feed the vegetable plants.(他们在木筏里种蔬菜。当木筏植物腐烂时,它们会释放营养物质,帮助植物生长。)”可知,蔬菜植物是吸收木筏植物的营养生长的。故选A项。
根据文章“They interviewed farming families and found strong evidence that floating gardens provide stability, both in the amount of food available to feed rural populations and in a farming family's income.(他们采访了农业家庭,发现了强有力的证据表明,无论是在可供农村人口食用的食物量方面,还是在农业家庭的收入方面,浮动花园都提供了稳定性。)”
根据划线词下文“One farmer told the research team that he earns up to four times as much money from the gardens as from traditional rice fields.”
通过文章最后一段“However, before gaining profits, farmers often take out high-interest loans (贷款) to cover the investment costs of filling the beds and stocking them with plants. Luckily; there are also lower-interest loans from responsible government or non-governmental organizations, which could ease that burden.(然而,在获得利润之前,农民往往会获得高息贷款(贷款) 以支付填充床和储存植物的投资成本。幸运的是;负责任的政府或非政府组织也提供低息贷款,可以减轻这种负担。)”可推知,作者想表达负责任的政府或非政府组织提供低息贷款,减轻了农民的压力。故选D项。
D
One day, Herbie Mensah was looking at the clothes piled (堆放) in the cupboard under the stairs. He realised he couldn’t send them to landfill “They were good-quality, designer labels. But they had holes. I thought: ‘Experiment. Do something different.’” Mensah says.
He set about his collection of clothing with scissors. He finished one piece and took it to the market. It sold. “You think: ‘This is interesting.’ Next thing. I was getting orders. My kitchen became my studio,” he says.
That was 18 months ago, when Mensah was 62. Now he rents a studio near his home in Kensal Green, northwest London, and sells his creations through his website. Sometimes Mensah stays up all night. “I can work for 24 hours and it will feel like five minutes,” he says.
Mensah’s connection with fashion is a long story. One evening in the early 1980s, after he’d been shopping, Mensah didn’t feel like going home. He arrived at a club on Bond Street, before it opened. Two men were already waiting, one of whom happened to be Michael Collins, the manager of Vivienne Westwood, a British fashion label. They all went for a burger. “Collins asked me if I was interested in doing a fashion show for Vivienne Westwood,” Mensah says. “I said: ‘Yeah, great.’ not thinking anything of it. A few days after the show, Westwood rang. She asked if I wanted to do a show in Paris. From being one of those boys hanging around on street corners, I was flying around the world modelling.”
When the modelling work began to dry up in the 1990s, he took a voluntary role with a housing association. That was his life for more than 20 years, but fashion never went away. Upcycling has taken his love of fashion to a different place. “Working creatively is like a breath of fresh air,” he says. “That keeps you going and alive.”
32. How did Mensah deal with his old clothes
A. He stored them in different cupboards. B. He repaired and donated them.
C. He remade and sold them. D. He sent them to landfill.
33. What does Mensah think of his current job
A. Highly enjoyable. B. Time-consuming. C. Physically challenging. D. Well-paid.
34. What benefit did Mensah get from Collins
A. He was treated to a big burger. B. He was gifted a flight tour of Paris.
C. He was given a modelling opportunity. D. He was invited to watch a fashion show.
35. What is the most suitable title for the text
A. A life-changing chance encounter B. A fresh new start for an old fashion boy
C. Fashion: always keeping one young and alive D. Upcycling: the hottest trend in fashion right now
C 33. A 34. C 35. B

If you need to work, wear blue light blocking glasses(also known as computer glasses)throughout or before you sleep to prevent sleep disruption.(让卧室成为一个没有科技产品的区域,因为电子设备发出的光会干扰你的睡眠。
上文“One of the most harmful things that can disrupt your sleep is the notifications you get from your smartphones.(可以扰乱你睡眠的最有害的事情之一是你的智能手机的一些通知。)” 符合,呼应本段第一句话“Keep any electronics you have on the other side of the room or outside the room. (把你所有的电子设备放在房间的另一边或者房间外面。)”,故选E。
【40题详解】
上文“The ideal temperature for sleep is 60~67 Farenheit(华氏度). This may be cooler than what most people are used to.(理想的睡眠温度是60 ~ 67华氏度。这可能比大多数人习惯的温度更凉爽。)”指出大多数人都习惯于在更高温的环境中睡觉,下文“Rule of thumb: sleeping in cooler temperature is better for sleep quality than warmer temperature.(经验之谈: 在较低的温度下睡觉比在较高的温度下睡觉更有利于睡眠质量。)”

故填including。
分析句子可知, 2 experienced the problem 为定语从句,先行词为The main age group,指这个年龄群体的人们,在定语从句中作主语,所以用关系代词that/who。故填that/who。
分析句子,设空处在句中作谓语,结合前文“A survey by the China Association of Health Promotion and Education found that ”可知,此处要用一般过去时,故填predicted。
短语be likely to do sth.,意为“可能做某事”,故填to feel。
短语be concerned about sth.,表示“担心某事”,故填about。
故填an。
故填their。

Kuppan was a good badminton player. His rise within the ranks of the badminton players of the school was impressive but unusual. One day he was nothing, the next he was a member of the school team.
In the School Championships, he sprang a surprise by knocking out the top seed, Richard Lee, in the semi final. In the final, he easily beat another competitor Abdul Rauf by 15-3 and 15-10. He was the School Champion. It was unbelievable. The previous year he did not even get past the first round, This year he was the champion.
Success got into his head, He began to think he was really good, In fact, he arrogantly (傲慢地) told Richard Lee and the others that they would never beat him again. He claimed he was simply too good for them, in a league of his own.
Well, it was true that Kuppan was a good and skillful player. He had natural ability and talent. So he picked up the game very quickly and soon became the best. However. he did not realize that nobody can remain at the top all the time. What goes up must certainly come down. Kuppan thought he could stay up indefinitely.
The other players were annoyed by Kuppan’ s declaration. They resolved to train harder to beat the guy who had insulted (羞辱) them, They even trained on their own every day while Kuppan wandered around talking with pride about his success. The State Individual Championships were coming up,So was the Interschool Tournament. The school’s coach worked hard to improve the school players. All of them trained hard, except Kuppan. He would miss training or perform half- heartedly. He was more interested in entertaining the admirers that had gathered around him. He thought he was too strong to be defeated.

The State Individual Championships reached us in time.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The State Individual Championships reached us in time. At 7:30, Kuppan stepped onto the court confidently to meet his unknown competitor. It would not take long to finish the first round, he thought. The moment the first service was played, Kuppan found it was not going to be as easy as he had thought. He had great trouble performing his shots. After ten minutes on the court, he was sweating and out of breath. He looked washed out and listless. A couple of minutes later he lost the first round by 9-15.
Kuppan tried to make a difference in the second round. His competitor was simply too good for him. Kuppan was defeated in the second round by 1-15. It was a great shame for him. He could not believe it but there he was. The next day the coach told Kuppan he had been dropped from the school team for the coming Interschool Tournament. Kuppan realized how foolish he had been. He now knew that pride comes before a fall. He had to learn this the hard and painful way. He would not like to repeat this ever again.

Despite having chatted for decades, the pair have only ever met twice-first in 2002 while Geoff visited New York at the age of 80, and then again two years later.

The farmers layer the plants about three feet deep creating a version of raised-bed gardens that float in the water.

Kuppan was a good badminton player. His rise within the ranks of the badminton players of the school was impressive but unusual. One day he was nothing, the next he was a member of the school team.
In the School Championships he sprang a surprise by knocking out the top seed, Richard Lee, in the semi final.
