Mundi, a 41-year-old female elephant, was orphaned at a young age, captured, and sold to the Mayaguez Zoo in Puerto Rico. The animals housed at the zoo were in such bad shape that they were being moved to various shelters under an order from the US Department of Justice.
Mundi was the zoo's major attraction. Her departure caused so much argument that armed guards came to see her off the island. She was so popular that people lined the streets to say goodbye.
Mundi's new home is certainly beautiful, After living in the zoo for 35 years with no other elephants, Mundi met Bo and Tarra, with whom she's now sharing 850 acres. She was first housed in a separate place, but she and the other elephants could see each other, and they started getting along quickly. Soon, Mundi was no longer separated from the others. Tarra immediately acted as a big sister and mentor to Mundi, while Bo became her playmate. Now, they spend a lot of time together and the public can watch their interaction and learn about their behaviors on the shelter's official website.
Carol Buckley, the founder of Elephant Aid International, first imagined setting up the Georgia shelter after meeting Tarra in 1974, when the elephant was less than a year old. At the time, Tarra belonged to the owner of a tire store, who used her to advertise the place.
Buckley ultimately became an advocate for elephants worldwide and designed the retirement home in Attapulgus to address their needs. Attapulgus was selected as the location for the shelter because its climate allows the elephants to be outdoors most of the time, almost year-round.
What can be inferred about the animals in Mayaguez Zoo
They lived a normal life. B. They were not welcome.
C. They were not well treated. D. They were living happily.
Why were armed guards sent to see Mundi off
To prevent possible accidents. B. To protect the animals around.
C. To say goodbye to Mundi. D. To show their respect for Mundi.
What was Tarra doing when Buckley first met her
Taking care of Mundi. B. Buying tires for her owner.
C. Working as a store keeper. D. Advertising a tire store.
What makes Attapulgus a shelter for elephants
Its small space. B. Its weather pattern.
C. Its special design. D. Its convenient transportation.
C
Even though water covers about 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, not all of it is safe to drink. In fact, less than three percent is fresh water, according to the United States Bureau of Reclamation.
Most of the water is contained in the oceans and must be desalinated (脱盐)for use. Now researchers
from MIT have developed a suitcase-sized desalination device that could be used to produce clean drinking water.
The new portable device produces water that actually goes beyond the World Health Organization standards, just by pushing a button, according to a press release from MIT. There are no filters(过滤 器) required. The device powered by a small portable solar panel uses electricity to remove salt and other particles from the saltwater. This eliminates the need for repeatedly checking or repairing it.
Now most available portable desalination units use filters that require high-pressure pumps to push the water, which makes them heavier and less energy efficient. The filterless feature of the new device will allow it to be used in faraway places or places with limited resources like small islands and ships, and even for emergencies.
“This is really the highest point of a 10-year journey that I and my group have been on. We worked for years on the physics behind individual desalination processes, but pushing all those advances into a box, building a system, and testing it in the ocean were really meaningful experiences for me,” says Jongyoon Han, the senior author of the study.
After the researchers ran tests in the lab, the device was ready for field tests. At Boston’s Carson Beach, the device filled a plastic drinking cup with clear, drinkable water in just half an hour. Now the researchers are still working on a final design that could use cheaper materials so that it can be available to the general public, and a new model of the device could be ready by the end of 2022. This small but powerful desalination unit may be the key to bringing safe water to a thirsty world.
What does the underlined word “eliminates” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
Proves. B. Creates.
C. Satisfies. D. Removes.
What can we infer about the device from Paragraph 3
It allows high production of clean water.
It makes a breakthrough in application.
It may provide power for faraway places.
It can replace most desalination devices.
What do Jongyoon Han’s words suggest
The public thinks highly of the device
The testing system for the device has been out of date.
Developing the device is challenging but worthwhile.
Further studies are needed before marketing the device.
Which aspect of the device are the researchers trying to improve
Its affordability.
The energy it needs.
Its performance in dry areas.
The purity of the water it produces.
D
For many years, humans have looked up at the collection of stars and planets shining in the night sky that make up the Galaxy (银河系). However, the Galaxy is now being observed for the first time in a new way. They have produced an image of the Galaxy not based on light. Instead, the image is
based on neutrinos (中微子).
Scientists discovered the high-energy neutrinos in ice deep below Antarctica’s surface over a period of 10 years at the Ice Cube Neutrino Observatory, a research station at the South Pole. They then tracked their source back to locations in the Galaxy. It is the first time these small pieces of matter have been observed arising from the Galaxy. This observation of the Galaxy is different from
what can be seen with our own eyes, or even instruments that measure other electromagnetic (电磁能
的) sources. The image does not contain stars or planets or other things observable because of their light. Rather they are observable because of the neutrinos originating in the Galaxy.
“This observation is groundbreaking. It established the Galaxy as a neutrino source. Every future work will refer to this observation,” said Tuboada, the spokesperson for the Ice Cuberesearch.
Neutrinos are electrically neutral created in nuclear processes. They are not affected by even the strongest magnetic field and rarely interact with matter. As neutrinos travel through space, they pass clear through everything: matter like stars, planets, and even people, just as light goes without stopping through glass. Neutrinos are elementary units, meaning they are not made up of anything
smaller.
Many parts of the universe are impossible to observe using light alone. The ability to use neutrinos in astronomy makes for a more complete examination. The direction from which neutrinos arrive points directly to their original source, so the researchers used machine learning to help determine which neutrinos originated in the Galaxy and which originated elsewhere. But how the neutrinos originated is up for debate. This is now the key question.
How were neutrinos found
By observing the Galaxy.
By examining nuclear processes.
By studying ice at the South Pole.
By measuring electromagnetic sources.
Which of the following best describes the observation
Pioneering. B. Changeable.
C. Predictable. D. Confusing.
What can we learn about neutrinos
They can’t be further divided.
It’s clear how they originated now.
They will be disturbed by magnetic field.
The Galaxy is the final source of neutrinos.
What is the best title for the text
The Origin of Neutrinos
The Image of the Galaxy
A Secret beneath the South Pole
A New Way to Look at the Galaxy
Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter whether the words come from ourselves or someone else. The positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. 36 In fact, we really shouldn't feel so because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. 37
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we
should be aware that our words cause certain responses from others. 38 And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. However, critical language may cause anger and defense.
39 Many of us regret something we once said. We remember unkind words said to us as well. Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving Is it needed If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. 40 The choice is ours.
How should I say it
Will we use our words to hurt or to heal
Generally people like positive and pleasant words.
We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect.
So in order to stay positive, we should only speak encouraging words to ourselves.
For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange.

Living in the shadow of my two elder sisters at college who already had their lives planned out
since they were little, I was always undecided about everything. As a teenager, I was fickle
I would like one thing for a week and then hate it the next. But I was constantly searching for the
beginning of the rainbow. Changing my dream from a vet to an astronaut, I thought there were various options available to me. However, my parents would shake their heads and repeatedly asked me such questions as, “Why can’t you be more like your sisters What are you going to do with your life
Aren’t you interested in anything at all ” After a couple of shrugs (耸肩), my parents usually stopped
talking. I was not sure if they gave up or anticipated my dull reactions. I often responded, “I couldn’t answer all of your questions now.”
Actually, my parents just had high expectations that never seemed to be fulfilled. Plus, like other parents, they just wanted to give the best to me and expected me to achieve success. The arguments with my parents seemed childish. One day, my mother made her thoughts clear, “Your grades aren’t high enough. No schools are going to want you, dear. We didn’t pay so much money for nothing.” Hesitating for a while, I said, “No matter what you say, I believe I will enter a good college.” Still, I let my emotions control myself.
Certainly, I had never planned not to go to college. After another debate with my mom, I decided to make a change. No longer would I sit back and let my parents mistake me for a bad boy. It was time to take action.
I knew it was a crucial year at high school. Releasing my feelings, I began to collect all the knowledge I had learned and review it with all my heart. I didn’t argue with my parents any more, but instead turned to my sisters for help and tried my best to study. Finally, I took the national college entrance examination with ease and confidence.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
A few days later, I received a call from my school, saying my college acceptance letter had arrived.
My parents excitedly said behind me, “Well, open the envelop!”

36. D 根据前文“We all talk to ourselves sometimes.(我们都有自言自语的时候)”以及后文“In fact, we really shouldn't feel so because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.(事实上,我们真的不应该,因为越来越多的专家认为大声自言自语是一种健康的习惯)”可知,本句属于过渡句,本句是在说明我们会为自言自语的行为感到不好意思。
37. F 根据前文“Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative.(不过要注意,多达77%的自言自语往往是消极的)”可知,前文提到了要注意自言自语时的消极语言,说明本句是在强调要对自己说积极、鼓励的话。
38. G 根据后文“And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. However, critical language may cause anger and defense.(店员可能也会以类似的方式回答你。然而,批评的语言可能会引起愤怒和防卫)”可知,后文提到了商店店员。由此可知本句是在举例说明在购物时会发生的一些情况,且强调要使用热情、友好的语言。后文中the clerk 与G 选项中 store 相对应。故 G 选项“例如,当我们把商品退回商店时,我们可能会在交流过程中使用热情、友好的语言”符合语境。
39. E 根据后文“Many of us regret something we once said.We remember unkind words said to us as well.(我们中的很多人对自己说过的话感到后悔。我们也记得别人对我们说过的不友善的话)”可知,后文提到很多人对自己说出的话感到后悔,也记得他人对自己说过的不友善的话,说明人们说出的话语有持久的影响。故 E选项“语言具有力量,因为它们具有持久的影响”符合语境。
40. B 根据前文“Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope , build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things.(话语具有积极的和消极的力量。当我们积极地说话时,我们周围的那些人会得到鼓励。我们可以提供希望,建立自尊,激励他人做到最好。消极的话语会摧毁所有那些东西)”以及后文“The choice is ours.(选择权在我们自己)”可知,本句承接前后文,提出两种选择。故 B 选项“我们会用我们的话去伤害还是治愈 ”符合语境。

第二节:读后续写(满分 2 5 分)
A few days later, I received a call from my school, saying my college acceptance letter had arrived. Then I hurried to the school with my parents. It was beyond my wildest dream till that moment. As a matter of fact, I doubted then whether I was in the dream. I normally dreaded the long walk to the school. But that day was different. There seemed to be something in the air, an electric current, connecting my body to the letter. When I got it, I was really afraid that the envelop was empty. But there was a white package inside. With my heart beating faster, I wondered whether it could really be what was expected.
My parents excitedly said behind me, “Well, open the envelop!” What I grabbed in my hands contained everything I had been waiting for. Slowly, I opened it and a flash of CONGRATULATIONS in bold bright letters caught my eyes. A feeling of happiness and relief rushed through my body. I was holding my first offer from a good college. Needless to say, it wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the countless hours of studying and writing, but most importantly, my parents’ constant reminders, in fact, were the best form of education for me. “Thank you, Mom and Dad!” I said gratefully.
