The Winter Olympic Games are not just an opportunity for athletes to win medals and honour for their countries. Every four years, the Games also offer audiences a chance to get to know more about winter sports from around the world. The Winter Olympics may not have the large crowds and huge stars of its summer sibling, but they share the same Olympic spirit.
Skiing
One of the most popular sports of the Winter Olympic Games is skiing. Skiers compete in the downhill and slalom(回转赛), and in the short and long cross-country ski races. Skiing was originally a sport played only in cold northern countries, but now athletes from all over the world compete in this sport, even those from countries without any snow!
Skating
Skaters compete with each other in speed races or in figure-skating events. The figure-skaters are generally considered to be the stars of the Winter Olympic Games. These ice princes and princesses are so graceful that it’s easy to forget that they are actually highly skilled athletes.
The skeleton
The skeleton is one of the strangest-name d sports of the Olympics. The skeleton is named after the shape of the metal sleds used in the 1890s, when the sport first started. The skeleton is a downhill sled race, usually on ice. This sport looks a little like the luge(无舵雪橇), where a person sits on the back of the sled with his or her feet forward, but the skeleton is a lot more exciting and dangerous than that. In the skeleton, a person lies on his or her stomach on the sled, with his or her head pointing downhill!
1. What is the sibling of the Winter Olympics
A. Skiing. B. Skating.
C. The skeleton. D. The Summer Olympics.
2. What can we learn about Skiing

B. It is the most dangerous sport of the Olympics.
C. It first started only in cold northern countries.
D. It was originally played in the 1890s and usually on ice.
3. How does the writer describe figure-skaters
A. They compete in the downhill and slalom.
B. They are both graceful and highly skilled.
C. They sit on the sled with their feet forward.
D. They lie on the stomach with heads downward.

I was a shy girl. I didn’t even like to answer the telephone for fear that I had to talk to somebody I didn’t know. I enjoyed the world of shyness. However, at school I had to spend all day in the company of others. My escape was reading. I spent a lot of time studying and was rewarding with good grades. My only failure was Spanish-I’d get all As on my written work and tests, but Ds and Fs on the spoken part.
Eventually I went to college. During my third year of college, I had enough of being shy and decided to change my outlook and behaviour. One day while at school, I noticed an advertisement for positions on the local classical music radio station. I had grown up listening to classical music, and I could easily pronounce names such as Tchaikovsk and Chopin.
I had absolutely no background in radio, and absolutely no hope of getting the job. The idea of talking to thousands of listeners in “radio land” frightened me. However, I luckily survived the interview. I was given brief descriptions of symphonic(交响乐)and a public service announcement to read, and a list of composers’ names to pronounce. It wasn’t hard for me. I left the recording sessions(录音片段)with a sense of relief and a sense of accomplishment. About two weeks later I actually landed the job. It was a challenging job, but I grew to enjoy it greatly. I began to feel comfortable talking to people.
Although I now spend many hours each week talking with people, I’m still basically a quiet person. Perhaps it is my soft voice and my quiet nature that helps draw people out as they respond to my questions as I interviewed them. My former shyness is a fortune, as I can relate to people who feel uncomfortable when they talk to newspaper reporters. I still enjoy moments of loneliness and the peace found in nature. But I’m also glad I decided to make a change in my life that has opened many door and opportunities that I never dreamt of.
4. What do we learn about the author
A. She liked reading B. She was good at Spanish.
C. She wasn’t interested in music. D. She didn’t work hard enough
5. How did the author feel before the interview
A. Very excited. B. Pretty confident.
C. Highly confused. D. Extremely anxious.
6. What does the author later think of her quiet personality
A. It makes others feel less comfortable.
B. It is helpful for her challenging job.
C. It prevents her being a newspaper reporter.
D. It draws a negative response from audiences.
7. The text mainly focuses on the author’s______.
A. desire to find her true self
B. feeling about being a radio hostess
C. story of exploring the meaning of life
D. expericnce and feeling of overcoming shyness
A 5. D 6. B 7. D

根据最后一段“My former shyness is a fortune, as I can relate to people who feel uncomfortable when they talk to newspaper reporters.(我以前的害羞是一种幸运,因为我能与那些在与报社记者交谈时感到不舒服的人相处)”可知,作者后来认为自己的性格对她富有挑战性的工作很有帮助,故选B项。

Nowadays, more and more students are often under pressure (压力). I am a student and I can judge it when my friends are under pressure. Some of those active ones will suddenly become silent. Some will become too quiet while some are likely to get angry easily.
There are many ways one can deal with pressure. Firstly, students, especially teenagers, must go for exercise often. A short walk in the park would help them relax a lot. Students should also play football, basketball, badminton and other sports to reduce pressure.
Exercise is also said to relax the body muscles (肌肉) and keep you calm. Students must have hobbies such as reading, collecting stamps, fishing or listening to music of your choice. These after-school activities help keep students free from school-related pressure.
Therefore, students should make a timetable. They can also work in groups to solve some of their academic (学业的) problems. Besides making friends and discussing certain topics, group discussions can meliorate the study skills. One of these is the ability to make a check-list of all the activities planned and carried out. This in turn will make studying more effective and help avoid unnecessary pressure.
Students should also have balanced meals and enough sleep. These are said to be basic to healthy lives. Students, especially those in examination classes, must sleep and eat well because a healthy body creates a healthy mind. However, going to sleep can sometimes be difficult. So it is necessary to ask for advice from those whom we trust and love. If nothing works, there is a need to go for treatment from the doctors. You may be surprised, but a friend of mine said that screaming (尖叫) at the mountains and laughing your heart out can take away pressure.
8. According to the author, who is most probably under pressure
A. A girl who becomes active slowly.
B. A boy who seldom plays with others.
C. A boy who laughed loudly all of a sudden.
D. A girl who shouted at her friends suddenly.
9. What does the underlined word “meliorate” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Record. B. Require C. Improve. D. Check.
10. What does the author mainly tell us in the last paragraph
A. How to develop a healthy lifestyle.
B What to do to sleep well.
C. A healthy lifestyle helps take away pressure.
D. Advice from others makes a big difference.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Reasons for students’ pressure.
B. Ideas on dealing with pressure.
C. Where pressure comes from.
D. How pressure influences students.
D 9. C 10. C 11. B
根据文章第一段“Some of those active ones will suddenly become silent. Some will become too quiet while some are likely to get angry easily.(其中一些活跃的会突然变得沉默。有些人会变得太安静,而有些人很容易生气。)”可知,当一个学生有压力的时候,活跃的可能会沉默,有可能太安静,还有人会容易生气。因此选项D“A girl who shouted at her friends suddenly.(一个女孩突然对她的朋友大喊大叫。)”
根据划线单词下一句“One of these is the ability to make a check-list of all the activities planned and carried out. This in turn will make studying more effective and help avoid unnecessary pressure.(其中之一是对所有计划和执行的活动制作检查清单的能力。这反过来会使学习更有效,并有助于避免不必要的压力。)”可知,小组合作会使学习更有效,由此推断,划线单词的意思和“提高”相似。选项A“Record(记录)”;选项B“Require(要求)”;选项C“Improve (提高)”;选项D“Check (检查)”。故选C。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“Students should also have balanced meals and enough sleep. You may be surprised, but a friend of mine said that screaming(尖叫) at the mountains and laughing your heart out can take away pressure.(学生也应该有均衡的饮食和充足的睡眠。
根据文章第二段“There are many ways one can deal with pressure. Firstly, students, especially teenagers, must go for exercise often.(应对压力的方法有很多。首先,学生,尤其是青少年,必须经常锻炼身体。)”、第三段“Exercise is also said to relax the body muscles(肌肉) and keep you calm. Students must have hobbies such as reading, collecting stamps, fishing or listening to music of your choice.(据说运动还能放松身体肌肉,让你保持冷静。学生必须有爱好,如阅读、集邮、钓鱼或听自己选择的音乐。)”、第四段“Therefore, students should make a timetable. They can also work in groups to solve some of their academic(学业的)problems.(因此,学生应该制定一个时间表。他们也可以小组合作来解决一些学术问题。)”以及最后一段“Students should also have balanced meals and enough sleep.(学生也应该有均衡的饮食和充足的睡眠。)”

Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans.
These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows for the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water out of the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive.
Cloud forests are also home to countless species of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet.
These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That, too, has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions.
12. Where can you probably find cloud forests
A. In North America. B. Far from the equator.
C. In an African country. D. At the foot of mountains.
13. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. Europe is short of plant types.
B. Scientists are working on a list.
C. Cloud forests are getting smaller.
D. Cloud forests house many plants.
14. What will be discussed in the following part of the text
A. Ways to protect cloud forests.
B. Goals of cloud forest protectors.
C. Difficulties in planting new trees.
D. Successes of getting wide support.
15. Where can we probably find the text
A. In a storybook. B. In a travel guide.
C. In a chemistry textbook. D. In a geography magazine.
C 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据文章第二段“These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. (这些云雾林位于山顶,通常靠近赤道。这些潮湿、树木繁茂的山顶主要分布在非洲、中美洲和南美洲国家)”可知,云雾森林通常位于靠近赤道,分布在非洲、中美和南美国家。故选C。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Cloud forests are also home to countless species of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet. (云雾林也是很多在别处看不到的植物的家园。一个云雾林的植物种类和整个欧洲的植物种类一样多。事实上,它们数量多到科学家们还没有列出它们的完整清单)”可知,本段主要介绍云雾林中的植物数量多且种类多样。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。最后一段先描述了目前云雾林遭到严重破坏,但是根据最后一句“There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions. (我们还有很多工作要做,但用创新式的解决方案去拯救云森林仍然是可能的)”可知,作者认为用创新性的办法是有机会拯救云雾林的,所以文章接下来会重点讨论保护云雾林的方法。故选A。

Top Tips for Better Writing
There are many different types of writing, such as essays, letters and speeches. Whatever your reason is and whatever your style, there are some universal tips that will help you improve your writing:
Be clear about your purpose
The most basic question to ask yourself before you start is why you are writing. In an essay or assignment, your purpose is to convey information and draw conclusions. But if you are writing a business report, you may want to make recommendations(建议). ___16___
Start with a plan
___17___The result is often disjointed writing with parts that don’t connect. Whatever you are writing, creating a clear plan is the first step to getting your message across quickly and in the most effective way.
Guide readers through what you write
Your task is to help readers understand your message quickly and precisely.___18___Each sentence, each paragraph should be relevant to what comes before and what comes after. You should use words and phrases that connect to show these connections.
___19___
Your aim in writing is to communicate ideas and information to other people, and you must keep that in mind with every word and sentence you write. Constantly ask yourself who you really write the information for.
Write for the ear, not for the eye
Once you’ve finished a draft of your speech, practice reading it out loud. ___20___Revise so you are more comfortable giving your speech. You want to sound natural, no matter what the occasion is.
A. Write for readers, not yourself
B. Write for the aim, not for the words
C. It sounds robotic, and employers hate it.
D. Far too often people write without a plan.
E. You’ll hear anything that sounds awkward.
F. Whatever it is, keep your purpose in mind at all times to avoid going off topic.
G. To do this, it is necessary to show them clearly how the different parts relate to each other.
F 17. D 18. G 19. A 20. E
由“The most basic question to ask yourself before you start is why you are writing. In an essay or assignment, your purpose is to convey information and draw conclusions. But if you are writing a business report, you may want to make recommendations”可知,开始写作前最基本的问题就是问问自己为何写作。
由“The result is often disjointed writing with parts that don’t connect”可知,结果导致写作各部分不连贯。
由“Each sentence, each paragraph should be relevant to what comes before and what comes after. You should use words and phrases that connect to show these connections.”
由“Your aim in writing is to communicate ideas and information to other people, and you must keep that in mind with every word and sentence you write. Constantly ask yourself who you really write the information for.”
由“Revise so you are more comfortable giving your speech”可知,进行修改,演讲就会更顺畅。

One sunny day in summer, two girls named Gracy and Emma were walking to their homes after school. They were talking about the special celebration activities that were going to take place the next day at their school. They both needed something new to wear for the activity, but they had failed to save enough money to buy anything for that purpose. Both their parents had given them only little money to buy something nice for the celebration the next day. But it surely wasn’t enough for them.
Once again they came by that store near their school and looked at the dress they wanted to buy, and Gracy suddenly saw a wallet near her feet just outside the clothing store. She picked it up and found a bit of money inside it. She turned to Emma and shouted exitedly, “Look, I found a little money in this wallet and I will use it to buy the dress I want! What a lucky day!” Emma took the wallet, opened it and found a name and an address in it.
“It is not a good habit to keep whatever we find, Gracy. Put the money back. There is a name and an address in the wallet. I think it won’t be difficult for us to find its owner. We are going to return it,” said Emma.
Gracy was disappointed and said angrily, “No way! I am not putting it back. I just can’t find the owner anyway. I can buy the dress in the store with the money.”
Emma then forced Gracy to come with her to the address and they arrived at a house. Together, the two of them came up to the door and rang the doorbell.

An elderly man came to answer the door. When he saw the wallet that Emma brought back, he thanked Emma again and again. He told the two girls that the wallet belonged to his father, who had passed away several months before. And then, he offered Emma and Gracy some money as a reward and insisted that they take it. Emma strongly denied it, but the elderly man insisted that they accept it, saying that his father had always been a warm-hearted and generous person, and that helping other people would surely make him happy. Hearing his touching story, Emma had no choice but to take the money.
Then Emma and Gracy went back to the store. With the money from the elderly man, Emma bought the dresses in the store, which she and Gracy had both desired. Emma handed the dress to Gracy, saying “Remember! Honesty is the best policy and we should always be honest with everyone.” Gracy nodded, with tears in her eyes.

The Winter Olympic Games are not just an opportunity for athletes to win medals and honour for their countries. The Winter Olympics may not have the large crowds and huge stars of its summer sibling, but they share the same Olympic spirit.

This sport looks a little like the luge(无舵雪橇), where a person sits on the back of the sled with his or her feet forward, but the skeleton is a lot more exciting and dangerous than that. In the skeleton, a person lies on his or her stomach on the sled, with his or her head pointing downhill!

C
B. What to do to sleep well.
C A healthy lifestyle helps take away pressure.
D. Advice from others makes a big difference.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Reasons for students’ pressure.
B. Ideas on dealing with pressure.
C. Where pressure comes from.
D. How pressure influences students.
D
