My interest in body language began with a professor of mine at university. He mentioned "Pinocchio" to me one cold morning after saying that I always rubbed my nose when giving excuses for being late to his courses. Actually, when someone tells a lie, the person's blood rushes to the nose and the extra blood makes it itchy (发痒的). This little example of non-verbal communication inspired me to become a body language expert. Now, I earn my living by training people in non-verbal communication. Knowing when someone is lying and knowing how to persuade people you' re telling the truth are two of the most important skills you'll ever learn.
I have spent a lot of time studying the ways the human body gives more reliable information than the words we speak. The words say one thing but the body may say something completely different. We know that crossed arms can be seen as either defensive (防御性的) or aggressive (攻击性的), but what about facial expressions, postures and gestures All of these say a lot and can only be understood if you know how to make sense of the signs.
Business clients are always in need of my services and I try to improve their confidence by teaching them about body language. I give advice about handshakes, which should always be firm and steady, and I teach the importance of personal space. They may seem like minor matters, but these codes of behaviour can be the key to making or breaking a business deal.
My working life gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I feel that I' m providing a public service, but it is a service that has had its downside. Whenever I meet someone new and I tell them what I do for a living, they immediately put their guard up and they're no longer relaxed. They quite literally freeze in the attempt to hide all the signals that they think I' m reading.
It makes life difficult at times, but I consider it a small price to pay for a job I enjoy so much.
24. What is the author's purpose of mentioning his professor
A. To describe his professor' s success. B. To explain why he chose his career.
C. To show his professor's study of the "Pinocchio" effect. D. To introduce what impressed him most during his career.
25. Why does the author think non-verbal communication is important
A. It usually tells the real story. B. It always benefits one' s career.
C. It plays an important part in persuading people. D. It provides people with great career opportunities.
26. Why do people react in an unnatural way when knowing the author's profession
A. They dislike his services. B. They think he is too proud.
C. They consider him unreliable. D. They believe he is studying them.
27. What can we learn about the author from the text
A. He thinks little of minor gestures. B. He travels the world giving advice.
C. He is happy with his work. D. He is good at pretending.

The Great Barrier Reef is the result of millions of years of continental (大陆的) shifts, sea-level changes, and layers of coral (珊瑚) growth. The Reef was built over millennia (数千年) by coral attaching itself to existing dead coral, as it continued to reach toward the light. Like most living things, coral needs the sun to survive and generally lives in shallow waters, where enough sunlight can penetrate (穿透) the water. Sea levels began to rise at the end of the last most recent ice age, about 14,000 years ago. As a result, the previously exposed Reef was covered by water and the coral expanded along the length of the newly revived Reef.
Climate change is having a dangerous impact on this natural wonder. Although coral and algae (海藻) have evolved despite climate change, allowing them to survive, coral has begun producing products that are poisonous to the Reef and block the growth of algae. Additional concerns include the overwhelming amount of pollution and chemical runoff into the water which harms the already affected coral and reduces biodiversity.
The Great Barrier Reef is well known as one of the best diving destinations in the world. You can do your part to help scientists preserve the Reef's ecosystem while visiting. By paying a visit to the Reef, visitors pay a reef tax that will be used for the management and conservation of the Reef. A lesser-known contribution visitors can make to Reef preservation is signing up for REEFSearch. After signing up, you'll be sent a field guide that will teach you how to collect information that scientists can use to study the Reef' s health. During each dive, using the information sent to you, you will look for key species, check for coral conditions, and make note of any garbage found near the Reef. These small contributions can ultimately have a large impact and save one of the great wonders of the world.
28. Why does coral live in shallow waters
A. It must coexist with algae. B. It needs sufficient sunlight.
C. It has to stick to dead ancestors. D. It has to avoid deep-sea pollution.
29. What drove the coral to stretch across the new Reef
A. The rise of sea levels. B. The exposure of it to air.
C. The change of its habitat. D. The threat from its enemies.
30. What is an impact climate change has on the Reef
A. Coral cannot survive. B. Algae become harmful.
C. Algae cannot be seen on the surface. D. Coral produces something poisonous to the Reef.
31. Which of the following should you do after signing up for REEFSearch
A. Study the Reef' s formation. B. Find new habitats for coral.
C. Gather information on the Reef' s health. D. Search for dangerous species around coral.

Madagascar, the world' s second-largest island country located off Africa's eastern coast, is an island of diverse ecosystems and a biodiversity hotspot. The country has unique wildlife, with 90% of its plants and animals found nowhere else. Madagascar's wildlife creates some of the country's most beautiful scenery and popular spots. One of its conspicuous landscapes, attracting tourists from almost all corners of the Earth, is the Avenue of the Baobabs in the Menabe region. This avenue is made up of numerous baobab trees along the dirt road linking Belon' i Tsiribihina and Morondava, creating a unique and beautiful setting.
Baobab trees are common throughout Madagascar. Of the Earth's eight species, six are native to the country. Some of the baobabs in the country are about 2,800 years old, with trunks rising to 150 feet. The avenue is a row of about 25 baobabs stretching about 260 meters. Other baobab trees are also found in the nearby pastures (牧草地). This road is one of Madagascar's most
visited places. It is also the most accessible place to see some of Africa's oldest baobabs. These trees were once part of a forest that was made up of other plants. However, massive deforestation cleared the area of most trees, leaving the baobabs to grow alone.
The baobab trees along the road and the other species growing in the nearby areas are always under constant threat from the increasing population. The trees also face threats from polluted water from the nearby fields, forest fires, and bushfires. Despite being a popular tourist attraction, the Avenue of the Baobabs has no admission fee or, visitor center and generates little money for local communities.
Thankfully, non-governmental organizations in partnership with the government have noticed the area and developed activities to protect the avenue. The Ministry of Environment, Ecology, and Forests declared it a temporary protected area in July 2007. In July 2015, the site was declared a national monument (国家保护区), the first in Madagascar. The government and local communities hope the trees can survive for additional 800 years.
32. What does the underlined word "conspicuous" in the first paragraph mean
A. New. B. Cultural. C. Striking. D. Changing.
33. What do we know about the Avenue of the Baobabs
A. It is a big forest. B. It has eight baobab species.
C. It consists of many different plants. D. It has Africa' s oldest baobabs.
34. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The risk to local baobab trees. B. Natural disasters in Madagascar.
C. Poor living conditions in Madagascar. D. The quality customer service of the avenue.
35. What kind of feeling is expressed in the last paragraph
A. Curiosity. B. Caution. C. Hopefulness. D. Sympathy.

Sara gazed thoughtfully at her parents while holding a letter. She was accepted to pursue the Electrical Engineering degree programme at University Pertanian Malaysia. All her hard work and sacrifices had paid off. But she knew, being the eldest of 6 siblings, her family could not afford to pay the university entrance fees. Her father was only a settler working on a palm oil estate.
Though she was determined to decline the offer, Sara went to visit Ms. Chang with the letter. Ms. Chang was one of the most dedicated teachers that Sara knew. From a humble beginning, she supported herself at the Teachers’ Training College by teaching tuition. So shed understood how hard poor students struggled to continue their study. For years, not only did she bring reference books to the students, but she often took them out for lunch and assured them they would succeed in life.
“Congratulations Sara, I am so proud of you,” Ms. Chang said excitedly.” But I’m afraid I have to reject the offer, because my family is unable to bear the cost of enrolling me there, “Sara replied in a low tone. Ms. Chang looked at her intently and told her not to worry about finance. There would always be a way.
A few days later, when Sara was hesitating about declining the offer, her high school principal, Mr. Salim, called her to his office. To her astonishment, Mr. Salim handed her an envelope, in which Sara saw a large sum of cash. It was more than what she needed. But when Sara asked Mr. Salim where the money was from, he just told her that the person wanted to remain anonymous(匿名的).
With the money in the envelope, Sara became a freshman of the university. One month later, she received another sum of money. She called her father, ”Dad, you don’t have to send money to me. I can manage on my own. “Her father was stunned,” But I didn’t.“ From then on, Sara received the same sum of money every month. “Who is the kind soul that is making all this contribution ” she was always wondering.

【答案】Hi, John,
Long time no see! Are you interested in attending a concert next Tuesday I waited for hours to get one, but unfortunately, I’ll have an important exam that day. It conflicts with the time schedule for the concert.
The concert will start at 9: 30 in Xinghai Theatre, lasting for two hours. The musical performances will combine Chinese and Western elements. Since you a keen classical music lover, I bet the Butterfly Lovers violin concerto will be extremely impressive.
Please come to my home to pick up the ticket or I can have it delivered to you. I hope you will not miss the concert!
【答案】Time flew and Sara graduated at last. It remained a riddle who the kind soul was. As she got a well-paid job and accumulated a large sum of money, Sara decided to pay back the anonymous helper. She went back to her high school and met Mr. Salim, who revealed the truth at her request. It was Ms. Chang, now a retired teacher, who was making all the contribution. Sara was in a flood of tears. She couldn’t wait to visit her.
With the address Mr. Salim gave her, Sara stood at the gate of Ms. Chang’s house. The memory of her last talk with Ms. Chang brought tears to her eye. “Without Ms. Chang’s help, I would not be where I am.” As she was lost in thought, the door opened and a kind, grey-haired lady greeted her. Sara choked up when she recognized Ms. Chang. She was so grateful that she hugged her teacher tightly. However hard Sally tried, Ms. Chang wouldn’t accept the money. “Pay it forward,” she said in earnest.
