As for long-distance travel, there are some wonderful destinations that actually offer you great value for your money, especially for those who do not hope to empty their pockets after a holiday.
Tokyo, Japan
Food lovers should go to this busy city which has the lowest cost of eating out — you can even buy two evening meals (three dishes for each), with a bottle of wine, for just under £34. For sightseeing there are plenty of free museums and attractions, while tour bus ticket prices start from as little as £11.56.
Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand’s capital is second to none as the best value long-distance city. Although there isn’t a big difference in all prices compared to the other cities, it is accommodation that really makes it stand out. If you’re only stopping for a long weekend, then be sure to pay a visit to the breathtaking temples.
Beijing, China
The Chinese capital stands out with the total price of £337.49. If you only have one cultural day out during your stay make it a trip to the Forbidden City. There are some beautiful buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. At the same time they’re home to priceless artificial objects from ancient Chinese emperors’ families.
Dubai, UAE
Although Dubai does have a reputation for being quite the splurge (挥霍) when it comes to holidays and if you’re going to enjoy shopping or experience the roller-coasters, it is in fact quite worth the money. The city also offers some cheaper prices across its museums, galleries and attractions as well as airport transfers.
21. What can you enjoy in Tokyo, Japan
A. Free bus rides.
B. Eating out cheap.
C. Visiting galleries free.
D. Priceless man-made objects.
22. Which one tops the list of the best value long-distance cities
A. Tokyo. B. Bangkok.
C. Beijing. D. Dubai.
23. What is people’s common idea about Dubai
A. Dubai is not a good place for shopping.
B. Historical buildings spread everywhere in Dubai.
C. Being on vacation in Dubai costs tons of money.
D. The roller-coasters there are the best in the world.
B
In December 2004, I had just become a professional photographer and was working on a project about communities who live on the sea, known as sea nomads (海上游牧民族). I was living with members of the Chao-Ley tribe (部落) on a small island in southern Thailand. We didn’t share a language and relied on body language to communicate.
I went out to sea with them regularly. One morning, I was due to set out with a group of six Chao-Ley fishermen in a small boat. The sea looked different, with the water totally still.
About 20 minutes after we left and a few miles out in the open sea, one of the fishermen pointed to a small white spot far in the distance. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. This was a tsunami (海啸) wave speeding through the ocean.
Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren’t out far enough to be safe, nor close enough to shore to make it back in time. We were stuck. I began to feel really scared.
The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance out the boat. My camera was in my backpack. I wanted to capture the scene, but I couldn’t. Any movement would imbalance the boat. Suddenly there was a huge noise. The wave hit the boat, but in a flash the skilled captain managed to swerve (使突然转向) us up and onto the wave. Then the boat moved from the tip of the wave down into safe waters. Our eyes and mouths were wide open, and everyone let out heavy sighs. The captain had saved us all.
Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how important life can be. I’ve been going back to Southeast Asia almost every year since. The photography project has become a thank-you to the people who saved my life. The picture I wanted to take on the boat remains “the one that got away” – I think every photographer has one. But mine changed my life.
24. What happened before the author set out with the fishermen
A. The captain wanted to cancel the trip.
B. He noticed something unusual.
C. They saw a white spot in the distance.
D. It looked like it was about to rain.
25. When did the author start to feel frightened
A. When fishermen on the boat felt nervous.
B. When he realized they were trapped.
C. When the boat was about to be hit.
D. When the boat shook violently.
26. What was the author doing when the tsunami wave hit the boat
A. Helping the captain swerve.
B. Taking a photo of the wave.
C. Trying not to move.
D. Reaching for his backpack.
27. What did the author learn from his experience
A. We should have the courage to take risks.
B. Opportunity never knocks twice.
C. Life is too short to be wasted.
D. Sometimes regrets in life can save us.
C
Sleeping in a noisy room isn’t only distracting (使人分心的), and it can also harm your health. Although researchers have known for decades that long term loud noises can harm us, it’s only recently become recognized as a widespread problem.
In a new review of previously published studies, researchers from Germany and Denmark took a look at the ways in which noises, such as an airplane passing by or jackhammer digging in the ground, can affect our hearts. Perhaps the most obvious impact of a loud sound while you are sleeping is that it can wake you up. But, even if you don't remember hearing the noise or you don’t physically get out of bed, it can disrupt you in ways you may not realize.
“Noise is not just causing annoyance, but it actually makes us sick,” said Dr. Thomas Münzel, a professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. “Regardless of where the sound is coming from, if it gets louder than 60 decibels (分贝),it can increase the risk of heart disease.”
When our body hears these noises, it reacts with a stress reaction. In this case, these sudden and unexpected noises cause hormones(荷尔蒙) to speed up and eventually damage the heart. Although the chance that a single noise will affect you is unlikely, it’s the continuous exposure (接触) to the sound that can finally affect you.
“But our heart health isn’t the only cause for concern. Long-term noise may also raise the risk of type 2 diabetes (糖尿病), depression, and anxiety disorders,” he warns. In the future, Münzel plans to examine how noises from cars, planes, and other vehicles affect the brain. But despite the amount or the depth of research he conducts, it’ll take the help of politicians to improve the effect of noise on our health.
“Politicians have to take into account, in particular, the new findings,” Münzel said, “As for aircraft noise and airports, it is important to make new laws and set new lower noise limits that protect people living close by the airport instead of the owners of the airport.”
28. What do researchers from Germany and Denmark find
A. Noise does little harm to people who are asleep.
B. Noise can cause people’s memory to get worse sharply.
C. Noise has been a widespread concern for a long time.
D. Noise louder than 60 decibels may cause heart disease.
29. Which word can replace the underlined word “disrupt” in Paragraph 2
A. Defeat. B. Harm. C. Attract. D. Discourage.
30. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Politicians should take action to handle noise pollution.
B. Münzel will continue other studies on brain diseases.
C. Benefits of airport owners are more important than health.
D. Attention should be paid to heart health and other diseases.
31. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Who Is to Blame for Noise Pollution B. What Should Be Done to Stop Noise
C. How Münzel Carried Out His Research D. How Noise Pollution Harms Our Body
D
Search and rescue teams are often accompanied by man’s best friend. A dog’s greater sense of smell can be important to finding survivors buried under fallen buildings. But now a new animal is being trained to assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it’s the rat.
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Donna Kean, a researcher from Glasgow, Scotland who has been working with rats for years. Kean explained why she and her colleagues at the nonprofit APOPO train rats instead of dogs. “The rats have a comparable sense of smell, and they’re just as trainable as dogs,” she said. “Their size is useful because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn’t be able to.”
At the moment, the rats are wearing homemade prototype backpacks that contain microphones, video equipment, and location trackers, and then scientists are sending these rats into mock debris(模拟的废墟). Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get to victims buried in the ruins. “We have not been in a real situation yet, we have got a mock debris site. When we track the backpack, we will be able to hear from where the rat is inside the debris,” Kean said. “We have the potential to speak to victims through the rat.”
Researchers train them on a basic series of behaviour. Training starts off in a really basic environment: a small and empty room. Then they gradually increase the difficulty in order to make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area look more like an actual collapsed (坍塌的) building site.
The training just started, and researchers still have to run training trials outside the research environment. They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA, who are based in Turkey, a country with frequent earthquakes and hoping that by next year they’ll be able to take the rats to Turkey for trials.
32. What advantage do rats have over dogs in the rescue work
A. They are easier to train.
B. They have a better sense of smell.
C. They are more suitable with a smaller size.
D. They adapt to new environments more quickly.
33. What function is expected of the backpacks
A. To guide rats to find survivors.
B. To protect rats from being injured.
C. To provide some food for trapped people.
D. To help rescuers communicate with victims.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The process of training the rats.
B. The difficulty of conducting experiments.
C. The rats’ behaviour in real collapsed sites.
D. The importance of the research environment.
35. What will scientists plan to do next
A. Use rats for rescue work in more countries.
B. Send rats to Turkey for field experiments.
C Conduct further study on disaster warning.
D. Develop the technology to assist GEA.

My husband and I bought a small house in a good neighborhood. It was a one and-a-half-floor house. We had to decorate it first because it was so old. I started to paint the walls and the doors outside. I also broke the broken fence (篱笆) and grew some flowers.
After I finished painting the walls of the bedroom upstairs inside, I brought up some water to wash the window. I washed the inside first, then opened the window and stepped out on the kitchen roof to wash the outside. The window was the kind that you couldn’t open from the outside.
I was so devoted to my housework that I didn’t realize the window gradually closed. After finishing cleaning; I tried to open the window but failed. Standing on my kitchen roof, I looked around the neighborhood. That was a lovely afternoon. Where were the neighbor’s kids riding their bikes They used to ride back from the park. Now no young voices shouted to one another. Carroll and Julie,an old couple, lived in the house at the corner. They were likely to be at home, but our kitchen was on the wrong side of our house for me to call them.
I sat down and thought about my situation. Even if someone came along, they couldn’t walk in the house and open the window. The doors were locked by my husband before he went to work. “When you’re working on an indoor project, anyone could open the door and come in. So just keep the doors closed.” he said. I sat there, thinking how stupid I was and what I should do.

If you only have one cultural day out during your stay, make it a trip to the Forbidden City.
A. Tokyo. B. Bangkok.

The training just started and researchers still have to run training trials outside the research environment.
C. Conduct further study on disaster warning.
D. Develop the technology to assist GEA.

How to Develop Courage by Overcoming Daily Fears
Sometimes when thinking of courage, we think it only applies to rare and uncommon situations. Yet our ordinary lives can also be full of courage, even if we are not facing the end of a gun, a wild animal or a dangerous criminal. Courage doesn’t just mean doing heroic acts. ___36___ In fact, where there is fear on a daily basis, there are opportunities for you to show your courage. Here are some suggestions to develop courage by overcoming daily fears.
● Recognize your fears.
By realizing that you’re fearful, you are more likely to get to the bottom of what your fear is. ___37___ You might come to understand that you’re afraid of failing or taking chances. You may be fearful simply because you don’t have confidence in yourself. The key is not to dwell on (细想) your fear, but to understand what it is and what you’re worried about.
● Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen.
If you hesitate to take action, ask yourself this: What’s the worst that can happen Then prepare to accept it. Then go on to improve on the worst. Is failure the worst thing that can happen No, absolutely not. ___38___ Doing nothing is actually the worst thing that can happen. When you take no action, you are sure to get nowhere.
● Take action.
Courage comes from taking action. ___39___ You need to act to overcome your fear. Your action may put you into discomfort, but you have to just do it. And your action can prevent you from being stuck.
● ___40___.
To build up your confidence, you need to do the same thing over and over again. Soon you will discover that less courage is needed because you have already gained mastery (精通). You are able to move decisively (果断地) forward.
A. Share your fears with others.
B. Practice, practice and practice.
C. So you are already in a comfort zone.
D. You cannot think courage comes just in one day.
E. Each undesired result is just one more step towards your goal.
F. Find out what is truly holding you back.
G. You needn’t wait for an emergency to occur to develop courage.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述的是如何通过克服日常恐惧来培养勇气。作者给出了几点建议。
【36题详解】
根据前文“Courage doesn’t just mean doing heroic acts. ”(勇气不仅仅意味着做英勇的行为。)可知,生活中的勇气不仅仅只意味着做英勇的行为才得以体现,根据下文“In fact, where there is fear on a daily basis, there are opportunities for you to show your courage.”(事实上,在日常生活中有恐惧的地方,你就有机会展示你的勇气。)可知,在日常生活中只要有恐惧的地方,都有机会可以展示你的勇气。故设空处应该衔接的是展示勇气不需要等到紧急情况,G选项“You needn’t wait for an emergency to occur to develop courage.”(你不必等到紧急情况发生才鼓起勇气。),承上启下。故选G。
【37题详解】
根据本段段旨“Recognize your fears.”(认清你的恐惧。)可知,本段主要讲述的是要认清自己的恐惧。根据空前“By realizing that you’re fearful, you are more likely to get to the bottom of what your fear is.”(意识到自己的恐惧,你就更有可能弄清自己的恐惧到底是什么。)可知,意识到自己的恐惧,才能弄清楚自己到底害怕什么。所以设空处应该强调的是弄清楚到底自己害怕什么,或者到底是什么阻碍了自己的前进。F选项“Find out what is truly holding you back.”(找出真正阻碍你前进的原因。),是对上文的呼应和强调。同时能够引起下文“You might come to understand that you’re afraid of failing or taking chances.(你可能会明白,你害怕失败或冒险。)”。故选F。
【38题详解】
根据前文的“Is failure the worst thing that can happen No, absolutely not. ”(失败是可能发生的最糟糕的事情吗?不,绝对不是。)可知,失败不是最坏的事情,因此推断E选项“Each undesired result is just one more step towards your goal.”(每一个不希望的结果都是你向目标又迈进了一步。)
D选项“You cannot think courage comes just in one day.”(你不能认为勇气是一天来的。)符合语境,是对前面事实的重复和肯定,即强调的是要采取行动。故选D。
【40题详解】
根据下文的“To build up your confidence, you need to do the same thing over and over again”(为了建立自信,你需要反复做同样的事情。)可知,需要不断重复地去训练、练习才能建立自信。B选项“Practice, practice and practice.”强调的就是练习。故选B。

【答案】Then I heard there was a child laughing nearby. I stood up and looked down the street. Sure enough, there was a little boy. He was riding his bike. I told him that I was washing the window and it shut. He looked up, saw me, and laughed. After all, it’s not an everyday case that you see an old lady on a roof. I told him to ask my next-door neighbors to come and help me. “Of course,” he simply answered.
The boy went to ask for help. Soon Carroll and Julie came, bringing a long rope with them. And then I climbed down. I sincerely thanked them for their kind help. The doors were locked and the keys were in the house, so my lovely neighbors invited me to their house to celebrate my rescue with coffee, cookies, and laughter. A few hours later, my husband came back. I said thanks to them again and went home. From then on, I definitely believe that a far-off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor.
