At first, Michael Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbor’s home. He had just parked around the corner from his own house when he got a call from his daughter: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to look. That’s when he saw an old woman crying outside.
“The baby’s in there!” she cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, ran inside without hesitation (犹豫). Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint,” Surrell says. The thick smoke burned his eyes and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who had lung disease, they were life—threatening
After a few minutes in the smoke—filled house, he retreated (后退) outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara ” he asked desperately.
“The second floor,” the old woman shouted back.
Taking a deep breath, Surrell went in a second time. Because the house had a similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor.
“Baby girl, where are you ”
His throat and lungs burned as if he’d breathed fire instead of the smoke in the air. He couldn’t open his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling (破裂声) of burning wood. Then a soft sound came out. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor and climbed toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.
Finally, he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled the baby toward him. Her body was weak and she wasn’t breathing. He carried her into his arms and ran blindly into the blackness. The next thing he knew, he was at the front door, then outside.
4. Why was the old woman crying outside
A. She lost the baby in the fire. B. The baby was hurt in the fire.
C. The baby was in the burning house. D. She couldn’t call the fire department.
5. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs
A. Surrell’s daughter worked in a fire department.
B. Surrell would probably have been killed by the fire.
C. The smoke blanketed (笼罩) Surrell’s house from next door.
D. A bucket of black paint blocked Surrell’s way to the house.
6. How did Surrell find the baby on the second floor
A. By searching on his knees. B. By opening the back door.
C. By shouting repeatedly. D. By turning on the light.
7. Which of the following best describes Surrell
A. Determined and patient. B. Independent and devoted.
C. Generous and reliable. D. Brave and caring.

“Your mind is a garden; your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds,” William Wordsworth wrote. In the above quote, William suggests that the process of gardening mirrors human life. Depending on what we “plant” in our lives, we bloom (生长茂盛) or don’t. Before you start to work in your garden, it’s necessary to have a vision for it. Thinking of what you want to grow in your garden and how to lay it out is a good first step in making your vision a fruitful reality. In life, you should consider what you want to create and what you want to achieve, because your mind-garden is like the white paper and the possibilities are endless.
Regardless of what you choose to plant, poor soil isn’t suitable for growth. This is why gardeners take the time and energy to upgrade the soil before planting. So, creating the right soil is important to the realization of your goals and dreams. Fortunately, there are countless ways to make your personal bedrock better. Getting an education is one of the most effective ways, which can help you enrich your life’s soil.
You don’t have to be an enthusiastic gardener to understand the meaning of “You harvest what you sow.” When a gardener wants tomatoes, they just need to plant tomato seeds. It’s a very clear act that produces an expected result. Each of us has the power to decide which “life seeds“ to plant. For example, if you plant ill seeds, it’s likely that you’ll experience pain in return. Contrarily, if you plant seeds of kindness and understanding, your life will bloom with happiness and love.
A gardener’s truly hard work begins after the seeds are in the ground because a garden requires a lot of care and attention. Regular watering and weeding are required for a healthy garden. So, to ensure your dreams take root, you should be devoted, aware, and present. After countless hours and energy spent, the crops have grown well and are finally ready to be harvested.
8. What is important before gardeners break ground in their gardens
A. Receiving some training in planting.
B. Drawing up a good plan for their gardens.
C. Having the courage to accept the worst outcome.
D. Doing research on the common local garden plants.
9 What is compared to getting education by the author
A. Improving the condition of the soil.
B. Growing your most favorable plants.
C. Taking care of the plants in your garden.
D. Selecting proper goals in gardening work.
10. What does the author want to express in Paragraph 3
A. Your quality of life depends on your positive action.
B. Your experience can help you understand plants better.
C. Your choice of soil is an important part in your gardening.
D. Your knowledge of planting will make you a successful gardener.
11. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Improvement of Planting Skills
B. How to Become a Qualified Gardener
C. How to Achieve Your Dreams and Goals
D. The Mystery of Harvesting Abundant Crops
B 9. A 10. A 11. C
根据第一段中“Before you start to work in your garden, it’s necessary to have a vision for it. Thinking of what you want to grow in your garden and how to lay it out is a good first step in making your vision a fruitful reality. In life, you should consider what you want to create and what you want to achieve (在你开始在你的花园工作之前,有必要对它有一个愿景。想想你想在你的花园里种什么,以及如何布置它是使你的愿景成为富有成效的现实的良好的第一步。在生活中,你应该考虑你想要创造什么,你想要实现什么)”可知,作者认为在翻地整理园子之前,有个好的规划很重要。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“This is why gardeners take the time and energy to upgrade the soil before planting. So, creating the right soil is important to the realization of your goals and dreams. Fortunately, there are countless ways to make your personal bedrock better. Getting an education is one of the most effective ways, which can help you enrich your life’s soil. (这就是为什么园丁在种植前要花时间和精力来升级土壤。因此,创造合适的土壤对实现你的目标和梦想很重要。幸运的是,有无数的方法可以让你的个人基础变得更好。接受教育是最有效的方式之一,它可以帮助你丰富你的生活的土壤)”可知,作者把提高土壤条件比喻为接受教育。故选A项。
根据第三段中“It’s a very clear act that produces an expected result. Each of us has the power to decide which “life seeds” to plant. For example, if you plant ill seeds, it's likely that you’ll experience pain in return. Contrarily, if you plant seeds of kindness and understanding, your life will bloom with happiness and love. (这是一种非常明显的行为,能够产生预期的结果。我们每个人都有能力决定种下哪种“生命种子”。例如,如果你播下了不良的种子,你很可能会经历痛苦作为回报。相反,如果你播下善良和理解的种子,你的生活就会充满幸福和爱)”可知,作者在这一段告诉读者我们的生活质量取决于我们的积极付出。故选A项。
通读全文,根据第一段中““Your mind is a garden; your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds,” William Wordsworth wrote. In the above quote, William suggests that the process of gardening mirrors human life. Depending on what we “plant” in our lives,we bloom(生长茂盛)or don’t.
D
With the advancement in AI technology, people are debating the boundary between robot and man: Will robots become more intelligent and eventually replace humans Rather, what we really need to worry about is actually “men being forced to become machines”.
The tasks of takeout riders are controlled by an invisible hand — the intelligent distribution system. “To make the riders more focused on food delivery, this system replaces our human logic to the maximum extent possible.” The riders don’t need to think but have to follow the guide of the system. All they have to do is riding as fast as possible. The navigation (导航) system charts the “best route” — to go over an overpass, through a fence, or even on the wrong side of the road — which, of course, promises the shortest delivery time. That is why these riders have to race against time as they over-speed, run red lights and go on the wrong road; they have to be faster, and faster. Their actions may be against the traffic law, but they are pushed by the pressure of “system time”. Takeout riders are just individuals who labor with their time, and they can’t go against the “system time”, so all they have to do is speeding. The riders’ physical conditions and the weather are completely invisible to the “intelligent distribution system”.
The scariest part of the system is that it is not only the platform, but the riders themselves that push them to go faster and faster. Every order they’ve delivered has been uploaded to the cloud data of the platform, and the algorithm (算法) will calculate the speed limit of the riders. When everyone gets faster and faster, the algorithm will speed them up accordingly.
Of course, each one of us can be a number in statistics, but “a person” can never be just a number. Algorithms can be cold, but human-beings are not. Data, as a tool, should serve people, but not enslave them.
Technology keeps moving forward, but it also should be moving toward kindness.
12. According to the passage, what can we learn about the technology
A. Robots has become more intelligent and taken place of humans.
B. AI technology are quickening takeout riding with navigation system.
C. The navigation system hasn’t yet mapped out the best route for these riders.
D. Algorithms will speed takeout riders up appropriately depending on weather.
13. What does the underlined word “chart” in paragraph 2
A. To make a map of B. To follow the progress of
C. To plan an action of D. To be ranked on a list of
14. What do the take-out riders often NOT do to ensure the shortest delivery time
A. Over-speeding B. Running red lights
C. Going on the wrong road D. Keeping traffic rules
15. According to the last two paragraphs, what attitude should we hold towards technology
A. Supportive B. Cautious C. Negative D. Doubtful
B 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第二段第五句“The navigation (导航) system charts the “best route” — to go over an overpass, through a fence, or even on the wrong side of the road — which, of course, promises the shortest delivery time.(导航系统绘制出“最佳路线”——通过立交桥,穿过围栏,甚至走错路——当然,这保证了最短的交货时间。)”
根据第二段第五句中的“to go over an overpass, through a fence, or even on the wrong side of the road(穿过立交桥,穿过栅栏,甚至走在路的错误的一边)”可知,此处是指导航系统建立地图,所以chart意为“绘制……的地图”。故选A。

My favorite food
I’m not a picky eater. There are few foods I don’t love, and even when it comes to food, I’m not a judge. But what is my favorite food I have to answer for you: fried fish.
Fried fish is a dish that you can see everywhere in China. To make it, you can only do the following: selecting, cooking and serving. Firstly, you go to the market, pick the fish you want and bring it home. Secondly, you process the fish carefully at home, making it ready for cooking. Then, you cook it in your way. Finally, you serve it on your table. Generally speaking, fried fish is tasty.
I love fried fish very much because that’s my father’s specialty! My father isn’t good at cooking, but he would like to cook for me. And I especially like to let him cook this dish-fried fish. When he makes the dish, anyone can feel his care and attention. So the dish has a different meaning to me. Besides, fish is good to our body. My friend Mike is very poor. But I think he is the luckiest boy I've ever known. He is one of a large, happy family.
One hot day, we were going to the ball field for a big game. "How hot it is today!” I said. “It is too far to walk to the ball field on a day like this. We'd better take a bus. ”
“Yes, it is hot,“ said Mike. " So let's go by bus. I think it is all right for me to take a dime for the bus (一角硬币). ”
I followed him into his house. He put his hand into a small bag hanging on the door. Then he brought out some money. After taking one dime, he put the rest of the money back.
“Who owns the money ” I asked. "Is it all right for you to take money from the bag ”
“Yes," he smiled. "This money belongs to every one of us in the family. When we children earn money, we put it into the bag. Father puts in the most. Then when we need money, we can take it from the bag. The money bag is Mother's idea. She thinks it will teach us to spend money carefully and to know its real value. ”
“Doesn't anyone know how much you take ” I asked.
“Oh, no,“ said Mike. "Mother says we must trust each other.
“But couldn't you take out more than you need for the bus ” I asked.
“I could,“ answered Mike. "But then there might not be enough money for Jane and Fred. Someone in our family is always needing something. If I take more than I need, there won't be enough to go around.

And how do you children earn money ” I asked.
“We have many ways to earn money,” he said. “We get up early to sell newspapers in the streets on weekends, or work in the stores in the neighborhood after school. Sometimes we get paid by looking after the neighbors’ children when the parents have to be away from home. Besides, we have a small garden where we grow vegetables all the year around, and we can get money by selling some of them. ”
As we were waiting for the bus, I kept thinking how lucky Mike was. He had a happy family in which the family members got on so well, trusting each other, and caring for each other. Moreover, he had a great mother. Her idea of the money bag not only taught the children the real value of money, but also the true meaning of it. Most importantly, it taught them how to be a person of good character. That day, I also learned a lot from the money bag.

A. By searching on his knees. B. By opening the back door.
C By shouting repeatedly. D. By turning on the light.
7. Which of the following best describes Surrell
A. Determined and patient. B. Independent and devoted.
C. Generous and reliable. D. Brave and caring.

“Your mind is a garden; your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds” William Wordsworth wrote.
9. What is compared to getting education by the author
A. Improving the condition of the soil.
B. Growing your most favorable plants.
C. Taking care of the plants in your garden.
D. Selecting proper goals in gardening work.
10 What does the author want to express in Paragraph 3
A. Your quality of life depends on your positive action.
B. Your experience can help you understand plants better.
C. Your choice of soil is an important part in your gardening.
D. Your knowledge of planting will make you a successful gardener.
11. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Improvement of Planting Skills
B. How to Become a Qualified Gardener
C. How to Achieve Your Dreams and Goals
D. The Mystery of Harvesting Abundant Crops
