My dad has watermelon-size muscles and enormous hands as if he’s always wearing baseball gloves. He doesn’t seem like the kind of person who bakes great bread, but he does. Every Saturday he bakes silently by himself. When he’s done, the whole house smells delicious. The rest of the week, he’s a car mechanic whose job involves complex lifting, tightening, shaking and hitting. People tend to think of cars as metallic members of the family, and Dad seldom lets them down.
I kind of understand Dad’s baking routine. Though he’s into the work, customers’ expectation and understaffing weigh him down. When working on the dough (生面团) he returns to a life of ease.
I had been feeling stressed out myself since I didn’t qualify for the swim team. I would have to wait a whole year, which was like a million years. I thought Dad had found that. He asked me how things were going last Saturday. I said OK. He looked at me for a moment, said it was time for me to help and headed to the kitchen.
Surprised though, I followed him. Dad took out his mixing bowl, telling me to mix materials while he added them. He isn’t big on measuring, knowing instinctively (凭直觉) how much to use. The bread is always great. Then he showed me how to process the dough — repeatedly stretching, pounding and folding it. It took ten minutes and a surprising amount of energy to finish. But what came next was harder and more surprising — doing nothing. We put the dough back into the bowl. It took an hour to rise. Then we pressed and stretched it, put it into pans and waited another hour for it to double. “It’s hard to resist putting the dough directly into the oven, but if you do, the bread will be tough,” Dad explained.
When the dough rose at its own pace, time seemed to slow down. We could do nothing to speed that. As I accepted that, I stopped watching the clock and started enjoying the time. My father taught me how to bake, but I learned something more — appreciate the slow pace of time and let the bread rise.

Young and old alike can be crazy about a new finding by researchers at Ohio State University and the University of Chicago. There is hope for us all when it comes to creativity, they say.
According to the study, which focused on the 31 most notable Nobel Prize winners in economics, there are two types of creativity that can blossom at different points in a person’s life. Conceptual innovators tend to do their best work in their mid-twenties, while experimental innovators peak in their fifties.
They explain in the paper that there are conceptual thinkers, who seek to communicate specific ideas or emotions and have precise goals for their works, planning them carefully in advance, and carrying them out systematically. Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein both did their greatest work in youth. However, experimental innovators build on their knowledge and accept theories throughout their careers and ultimately find new and innovative ways to analyze that knowledge. These thinkers tend to do their best work later in life. The paper cites Virginia Woolf and Charles Darwin as late bloomers.
The study states, “Many scholars believe that creativity is only associated with youth. Two 54-year-old Harvard scholars were denied offers of tenured professorships (终身教授) due to concerns of the so-called problem of “extinct volcanoes.”
Their findings suggest that this kind of biased (有偏见的) thinking leads to bad decisions. It ignores the fact that there are different types of innovators and that different problems demand different kinds of contributions and solutions. They hope their work will gradually remove the world’s favoritism for precocious geniuses(早熟的天才) and its ignorance of the creativity that comes with age. Weinberg, the co-author of the study, said,“We believe what we found in this study isn’t limited to economics, but could apply to creativity more generally.”
8. Which of the following can replace the underlined “blossom”
A. Fully develop. B. Suddenly change.
C. Gradually fade. D. Repeatedly emerge.
9. What determines a person’s most creative period according to the study
A. Age or career. B. Education background.
C. Type of thinking. D. Exposure to diverse ideas.
10. What does the writer want to stress in the last paragraph
A. Creativity breeds success.
B. Creativity knows no age limit.
C. Solutions need diverse creativity.
D. Favoritism for geniuses limits creativity.
11. What’s the writer’s attitude to the new findings
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Positive. D. Critical.
D
Have you ever spent half an hour searching the Internet which, as you find out afterwards, lasted three hours, or opened a book shortly after breakfast and a little while later noticed that the room was getting darker
Most people can remember experiencing such a state. Your mind wasn't wandering; you were totally focused and concentrated on that activity, to such an extent that you were not even aware of yourself. Psychologists call these fully absorbing experiences flow states, which were discovered and named by a world-famous psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. His celebrated book Flow: The Psychology of Happiness became an instant best-seller, making its way to the top self-help classics.
The state of flow happens under very specific conditions-when we encounter a challenge that is testing for our skills, and yet our skills and capacities are such that it is just about possible to meet this challenge. So both the challenge and the skills are at high levels, stretching us almost to the limit. If challenges exceed skills, one can become anxious. If skills exceed challenges, we usually become bored. Neither of these two cases result in flow.
What is also interesting in flow is the almost total absence of emotions during the actual process. One seems to be almost beyond experiencing emotions, most likely because the awareness of self is not present. Mihaly himself is also very much aware of the potential negative impact of the flow. One philosopher once describes his own experience of flow: “When I get totally involved in the conversation, I am not aware of myself, the world around or the passage of time. Sometimes, I may become addictive to that existence, unwilling to cope with other daily routines of life, like forgetting dinner, and saying goodbye to my children.”
12. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1
A. To offer a general background of the topic. B. To make an overall outline for the passage.
C. To introduce the topic of the passage. D. To clarify the definition of the topic.
13. In which of the following experience can we enter "flow state"
A. Adopting a dog. B. Watching TV.
C. Playing the chess. D. Arguing with others.
14. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. The state of flow is little conditional. B. Genius at normal schools often gets bored.
C. Challenges at high levels push us to the limit. D. Skills play the most important part in flow.
15. Why does the writer quote the philosopher's words
A. To show the drawbacks of the flow. B. To stress the value of self-awareness.
C. To underline the absence of emotions. D. To indicate the difficulty of enjoying the flow.

In recent years, a new benefit of volcanoes has surfaced. ____20____ Their measures involve using the heat beneath the earth’s surface to produce electricity.
Volcanoes may be unpredictable. However, as we learn more about how they work, they will become even more important to life on the earth.

Surprised though I followed him.

A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Positive. D. Critical.
A 9. C 10. B 11. B

根据划线单词下文“Conceptual innovators tend to do their best work in their mid-twenties, while experimental innovators peak in their fifties.(概念创新者往往在25岁左右做最好的工作,而实验创新者则在50岁左右达到顶峰。)”和划线单词所在句子“there are two types of creativity that can blossom at different points in a person’s life. (在一个人的一生中,有两种类型的创造力可以在不同的时刻blossom。)”可知,概念创新者往往在25岁左右做最好的工作,而实验创新者则在50岁左右达到顶峰,这说明具有这两种创造力的人在不同的时刻会做到最好,即得到充分发展,所以画线单词“blossom”与A项“充分发展”意思一样,故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“They explain in the paper that there are conceptual thinkers, who seek to communicate specific ideas or emotions and have precise goals for their works, planning them carefully in advance, and carrying them out systematically. Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein both did their greatest work in youth. ( 他们在论文中解释说,有一些概念思想家,他们试图传达具体的想法或情感,并为他们的工作有明确的目标,事先仔细计划,并系统地执行它们。巴勃罗·毕加索和阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦都在青年时期完成了他们最伟大的作品。)”可推知,根据这项研究,一个人最具创造力的时期是由思考方式来决定的,故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“They hope their work will gradually remove the world’s favoritism for precocious geniuses(早熟的天才) and its ignorance of the creativity that comes with age.(他们希望他们的工作将逐渐消除世界对早熟天才的偏爱以及对随着年龄增长而产生的创造力的无知。)”

C 13. C 14. B 15. A

Your mind wasn't wandering; you were totally focused and concentrated on that activity, to such an extent that you were not even aware of yourself. Psychologists call these fully absorbing experiences flow states, which were discovered and named by a world-famous psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.
根据第三段中“The state of flow happens under very specific conditions-when we encounter a challenge that is testing for our skills, and yet our skills and capacities are such that it is just about possible to meet this challenge. So both the challenge and the skills are at high levels, stretching us almost to the limit.(心流的状态发生在非常特定的条件下——当我们遇到一个考验我们技能的挑战时,而我们的技能和能力刚好可以应对这个挑战。 所以挑战和技能都是高水平的,几乎把我们拉伸到极限)”可推知,四个选项中只有“下棋”可以考验我们的技能,而我们的能力也可以应对这个挑战,能让我们可以进入“心流状态”。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“If challenges exceed skills, one can become anxious. If skills exceed challenges, we usually become bored.(如果挑战超过了技能,人就会变得焦虑。如果技能超过了挑战,我们通常会感到无聊)”可推知,天才属于技能超过了挑战,所以在普通学校经常感到无聊。故选B。

【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章对火山的形成、喷发强度的决定因素、火山的危害和好处等进行了介绍。
【16题详解】
根据前文“Take a bottle of soda, and shake it really hard. Gas will form inside, causing a buildup of pressure. Twist the cap off. Pressure will be released from the bottle, and soda will shoot everywhere.”(拿瓶苏打水,用力摇晃。 可知,选项A中的the same way就是指指苏打水从瓶子里喷出来的方式,根据后文“Pressure builds up inside a volcano as gas forms in magma (岩浆), which is hot liquid rock beneath the surface of the earth. Gas bubbles in the volcano need to escape. When a volcano erupts, magma is pushed up through the opening with great force.”(当气体在岩浆中形成时,压力在火山内部积聚(岩浆), 它是地球表面下的热液体岩石。
根据前文“The intensity of an eruption depends on a few factors. One is the magma’s temperature. Another is the magma’s thickness.”(喷发的强度取决于几个因素。
根据后文“The Hawaiian Islands were created by the eruptions of large low-lying volcanoes which are made up of layers of hardened lava.”(夏威夷群岛是由大型低洼火山喷发形成的,这些火山是由坚硬的熔岩层组成的。)可知,此处是讲火山喷发也会创造新的土地,对应选项A中的“they can also create new land”(它们还可以创造新的土地),又和前文“Volcanoes can be destructive.”(火山具有破坏性。) 故选A。
根据后文“Ash from volcanoes adds helpful minerals to soil. This helps plants grow strong. Healthy plants produce oxygen for humans and animals to breathe. Volcanoes also remove heat from the earth’s interior (内部), which helps keep our planet cool.”(火山灰为土壤添加了有益的矿物质。
根据后文“Their measures involve using the heat beneath the earth’s surface to produce electricity.”(他们的措施包括利用地表下的热量发电。)和前文“In recent years, a new benefit of volcanoes has surfaced.”(近年来,火山的一个新的好处浮出水面。)
