To help new students, the International Business Institute (IBI) plans to set up a buddy (伙伴) peer support project. The project will help new students meet current students at IBI who can provide them with some friendly company during their first months in Newcastle and help them with any small problems that they may have.
What’s in it for you
We believe that being a buddy will be rewarding in several ways. As a volunteer, it will be personally satisfying to know that you are able to help new students. It will also help you make contacts that may be valuable in your future academic and professional lives. If you are an overseas student, it will give you another opportunity to practise speaking English.
Responsibilities of buddies
Telephone and arrange to make contact with the new student.
Meet the student and show him/her around the campus and the local area. Answer questions about living in Newcastle and administration procedures at IBI.
Arrange to meet the new student one morning or afternoon one weekend early in the semester, and take the student to places that you enjoy in Newcastle.
Be prepared to take phone calls from the new student to answer further questions that he/she may have from time to time. Meet to explain information to the new student in person, if required.
You will be matched to an individual new student. However, if you have friends who are also buddies, you might prefer to form a support group together. This would mean that you meet the new students as a group rather than one-on-one.
Being a buddy is voluntary. There is no “requirement” to provide assistance beyond the help outlined above.
Please note that if you agree to become a peer support buddy you will be expected to fulfil your role conscientiously and cheerfully. It will be important to be considerate and reliable so that the student can feel confident in your support.
21. According to the passage, what benefit can you get from being a buddy
A. You can learn how to be a confident person.
B. It is easy for you to find some friendly company.
C. It may be helpful for your future studies and career.
D. You can be rewarded with both money and prizes.
22. As a buddy, you need to __________.
A. form a support group with other volunteers at IBI
B. help the new student get familiar with his or her surroundings
C. meet the new student every morning early in the semester
D. provide assistance in studying each subject after class
23. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A To introduce campus life for new students.
B. To offer an opportunity to practise speaking English.
C. To attract potential volunteers to be peer supporters.
D. To provide some information about studying overseas.

Graduating from high school is a milestone event. Most students are 18 when they graduate, but one Pennsylvania boy from Bensalem, a suburb of Philadelphia, just graduated and he is only nine and he is one of the youngest ever to do so.
David Balogun recently received his diploma from the Reach Cyber Charter (特许)School in Harrisburg where he was studying remotely. He has already started taking college courses. Besides being excellent in school, David loves computer programming, science, martial arts, and playing the piano.
David’s parents have advanced degrees but it is demanding to raise a child with an extraordinary intellectual gift. “I had to get outside of the box.” David’s mother, Ronya Balogun, told the local television station. “Playing pillow fights when you’re not supposed to, throwing the balls in the house. He’s a 9-year-old with a brain that just has the capacity to understand and comprehend a lot of concepts that are beyond his years and sometimes beyond my understanding.”
Putting David in the charter school was a no-brainer for his parents. “When he heard the STEM program, at seven years old, he was jumping up and down. I said ‘Okay, this is where we’re going, and this is what we’re doing’. He loved it from the first moment. It’s been an amazing journey,” she added.
David’s remarkable education began two years ago, when he became a student at the charter school. Shortly after he began attending the school, David placed out of the elementary and middle school courses and began high school.
David already knows that he wants to be an astrophysicist (天体物理学家). But he has to complete his education first. While he has already completed a semester at Buck County Community College, his parents are researching college and university options that will be more challenging. They are looking into Ivy League schools including the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Harvard, but since David is still only nine, he can’t live on campus.
24. What can we learn from the third paragraph
A. David grows faster than other children.
B. David discourages his mother completely.
C. Teaching David has proved efficient.
D. Raising David has been challenging.
25. How did David react when he heard about the STEM program
A. Confused. B. Abnormal. C. Resistant. D. Delighted.
26. What is a must for David before becoming an astrophysicist
A Developing multiple hobbies.
B. Being expert in computers.
C. Finishing school first.
D. Getting used to distance learning.
27. What is a suitable title for the text

B. 9-Year-Old Boy Graduated from High School
C. Age Restriction for Going to College is Removed
D. Parenting Contributes to a Boy’s Achievement

In 2020, Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest survey on the topic ever undertaken. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently ” Most of them said regret was at least an occasional part of their life. Roughly 21 percent said they felt regretful all the time. Only 1 percent said they never felt regretful.
If you are of the “no regrets” school of life, you may think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn’t the case. Letting yourself be overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To extinguish your regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow but causes you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.
Uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive feat. It requires that you go back to a past scene. Imagine that you acted differently to change it, and with that new scene in mind, arrive at a different present and then, compare that fictional present with the one you are experiencing in reality. Not all regrets are the same of course. Pink says they come in four basic varieties, and an instance of regret may involve just one combination.
Many connection regrets overlap (重叠) with moral regrets, which can come about after you go against your own values. For example, you may pride yourself on being a loving person, and thus regret not living up to this image in the relationship you harmed. Moral regrets can also involve just yourself. Maybe you regret not living up to your commitment to your health when you ate a whole pizza or skipped the gym.
If not analyzed and managed, any variety of regret can be harmful to your well-being. Regret is linked to depression and anxiety, and excessive regret can adversely affect your immune system. But regret doesn’t have to be put aside and ignored.
28. What could be concluded from Pink’s research
A. Half of the people felt regretful. B. Most people lived without regrets.
C. None could live a life without regrets. D. The majority of the people had regrets.
29. What does the underlined word “extinguish” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Admit. B. Destroy. C. Treasure. D. Encounter.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The harm of moral regrets.
B. The importance of commitment.
C. The relationship between regrets and values.
D. The connection between reality and imagination.
31. What might the author continue talking about
A. Types of regrets. B. Causes of regrets.
C. Benefits of experiencing regrets. D. Ways of dealing with regrets.

Good news, coffee lovers: Your daily cup of Joe might be doing good to your heart, namely by helping to reduce the risk of heart failure, suggest the findings of a new study. In an analysis of data from three large studies on the topic, researchers found that those who reported drinking one or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day had “a related decreased long-term heart failure risk”.
For the report published in Circulation: Heart Failure, researchers used machine learning to examine data from a large study from the Framingham Heart Study, referencing this data against two other studies. “Each study included at least 10 years of follow-up, and altogether the studies provided information on more than 21,000 U. S. adult participants,” researchers said.
When analyzing the Framingham Heart Study, researchers noted that when compared to non-coffee drinkers, coffee drinkers’ risk of heart failure decreased by 5% to 12% for each cup they drank each day. As for decaffeinated coffee, researchers noted that it did, not have the same benefits as caffeinated coffee, with one study suggesting that decaffeinated coffee may have an opposite effect.
Dr. David Kao, senior study author, said in a statement, “The relation between caffeine and heart failure risk reduction was surprising. Coffee and caffeine are often considered by the general population to be ‘bad’ for the heart because people relate them to health problems like palpitations, high blood pressure, etc. The relationship between increasing caffeine consumption and decreasing heart failure risk turns that thought on its head.”
“However, there is not yet enough clear evidence to prove that increasing coffee consumption can decrease the risk of heart disease with the same strength and certainty as stopping smoking, losing weight, or exercising,” Kao noted. The researchers also warned that the findings only focused on black coffee, that is, plain coffee, without added sugar and high-fat dairy products such as cream.
32. What’s the finding of the new study
A. The number of heart failure cases has decreased gradually.
B. Coffee can help lower the possibility of heart failure.
C. Caffeine does harm to people’s health.
D. Coffee helps cure heart disease.
33. How did researchers achieve their finding
A. By comparing data from long-term studies. B. By interviewing experts about their opinions.
C. By conducting surveys among young adults. D. By searching online for detailed information.
34. What can directly affect the result of the study
A. The brand of coffee. B. The addition of caffeine to coffee.
C. The age of the subjects. D. The amount of coffee consumption.
35. What is Dr. Kao’s attitude towards the result
A. Cautious. B. Positive. C. Curious. D. Indifferent.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.

A. You can learn how to be a confident person.
B. It is easy for you to find some friendly company.

“I had to get outside of the box.” David’s mother Ronya Balogun, told the local television station.
D Raising David has been challenging.
25. How did David react when he heard about the STEM program

【答案】28. D 29. B 30. C 31. D

【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. A
【解析】

【33题详解】
细节理解题。由第二段中““Each study included at least 10 years of follow-up, and altogether the studies provided information on more than 21,000 U. S. adult participants,” researchers said. (研究人员说:“每项研究都包括至少10年的随访,这些研究总共提供了21000多名美国成年参与者的信息。”)”可知,研究人员通过对比长期研究的数据,得出研究结果。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“In an analysis of data from three large studies on the topic, researchers found that those who reported drinking one or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day had “a related decreased long-term heart failure risk”. (在对三项大型研究数据的分析中,研究人员发现,那些报告每天喝一杯或多杯含咖啡因咖啡的人“长期心力衰竭风险降低”)”和第三段中“As for decaffeinated coffee, researchers noted that it did, not have the same benefits as caffeinated coffee, with one study suggesting that decaffeinated coffee may have an opposite effect. (至于无咖啡因咖啡,研究人员指出,它确实没有含咖啡因咖啡那么有益,一项研究表明,无咖啡因咖啡可能会产生相反的效果)”可知,喝含咖啡因的咖啡才可能会降低心脏衰竭的风险,无咖啡因咖啡没有含咖啡因咖啡那么有益,故咖啡中咖啡因的添加对实验结果有直接影响。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中““However, there is not yet enough clear evidence to prove that increasing coffee consumption can decrease the risk of heart disease with the same strength and certainty as stopping smoking, losing weight, or exercising,” Kao noted. (Kao指出:“然而,目前还没有足够的明确证据证明,增加咖啡消费可以像戒烟、减肥或锻炼一样,降低患心脏病的风险。”)”可知,Kao认为没有足够的证据表明增加含咖啡因的咖啡的消耗量能降低心脏衰竭的风险,因此他对待研究的结果是持谨慎的态度。故选A。

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.

【答案】 Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully. Then I hurried up and ran up to him, only to find that his leg was cramping. I tried to help him stand and move forward, but he refused. He asked me to run after the others so that I could get the first place. I thought for a second and decided to accompany him for a rest. Then we ran slowly forward together. Although we ran slowly and were overtaken by others, I felt relaxed and we finally crossed the finish line together.
A reporter took a picture of this moving scene and posted it online. During the time, the photo got a lot of likes. Many strangers sent the emails to praise me about the incident. In fact, I was a little hesitant at the beginning, but the moment I decided to help Blake, I felt calm and relaxed. I’m happy that I did the right thing.
