He had never sung in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had expected he could sing so beautifully! All the people present had a good time and the pianist was also very happy because he found that he could sing well.
He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name pianist in a no-name bar. Now he found, by accident, his ability to sing, so he went on working hard on singing. Later, the pianist became one of the best-known singers in the US. His name was Nat King Cole. You, too, have skills and abilities that you haven’t found. You may not feel that your talent is great, but it may be better than you think. With hard work, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may have no success at all if you do nothing about your talent.

Sleeping in a noisy room isn’t only distracting (使人分心的), and it can also harm your health. Although researchers have known for decades that long term loud noises can harm us, it’s only recently become recognized as a widespread problem.
In a new review of previously published studies, researchers from Germany and Denmark took a look at the ways in which noises, such as an airplane passing by or jackhammer digging in the ground, can affect our hearts. Perhaps the most obvious impact of a loud sound while you are sleeping is that it can wake you up. But, even if you don't remember hearing the noise or you don’t physically get out of bed, it can disrupt you in ways you may not realize.
“Noise is not just causing annoyance, but it actually makes us sick,” said Dr. Thomas Münzel, a professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. “Regardless of where the sound is coming from, if it gets louder than 60 decibels (分贝),it can increase the risk of heart disease.”
When our body hears these noises, it reacts with a stress reaction. In this case, these sudden and unexpected noises cause hormones(荷尔蒙) to speed up and eventually damage the heart. Although the chance that a single noise will affect you is unlikely, it’s the continuous exposure (接触) to the sound that can finally affect you.
“But our heart health isn’t the only cause for concern. Long-term noise may also raise the risk of type 2 diabetes (糖尿病), depression, and anxiety disorders,” he warns. In the future, Münzel plans to examine how noises from cars, planes, and other vehicles affect the brain. But despite the amount or the depth of research he conducts, it’ll take the help of politicians to improve the effect of noise on our health.
“Politicians have to take into account, in particular, the new findings,” Münzel said, “As for aircraft noise and airports, it is important to make new laws and set new lower noise limits that protect people living close by the airport instead of the owners of the airport.”
24. What do researchers from Germany and Denmark find
A. Noise does little harm to people who are asleep.
B. Noise can cause people’s memory to get worse sharply.
C. Noise has been a widespread concern for a long time.
D. Noise louder than 60 decibels may cause heart disease.
25. Which word can replace the underlined word “disrupt” in Paragraph 2
A. Defeat. B. Harm. C. Attract. D. Discourage.
26. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Politicians should take action to handle noise pollution.
B. Münzel will continue other studies on brain diseases.
C. Benefits of airport owners are more important than health.
D. Attention should be paid to heart health and other diseases.
27. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Who Is to Blame for Noise Pollution B. What Should Be Done to Stop Noise
C. How Münzel Carried Out His Research D. How Noise Pollution Harms Our Body
D 25. B 26. A 27. D
根据第三段最后一句“Regardless of where the sound is coming from, if it gets louder than 60 decibels (分贝), it can increase the risk of heart disease. (不管声音来自哪里,如果声音超过60分贝,就会增加患心脏病的风险)”可知,超过60分贝的噪音可能导致心脏病。故选D。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前一句“Perhaps the most obvious impact of a loud sound while you are sleeping is that it can wake you up.(也许在你睡觉时,噪音最明显的影响是它能把你吵醒)”和划线单词所在句“But, even if you don't remember hearing the noise or you don’t physically get out of bed, it can disrupt you in ways you may not realize.(但是,即使你不记得听到了噪音,或者你没有从床上起来,它也会以你没有意识到的方式disrupt你)”可知,划线单词“disrupt”的意思是伤害,此处指以你觉察不到的方式伤害到你。
根据最后一段“Politicians have to take into account, in particular, the new findings (政治家们必须特别考虑新发现)”和“As for aircraft noise and airports, it is important to make new laws and set new lower noise limits that protect people living close by the airport instead of the owners of the airport.(关于飞机噪音和机场,重要的是制定新的法律和设置新的低噪音限制,以保护住在机场附近的人们,而不是机场的所有者)”可推知,政治家应该采取行动处理噪音污染。故选A。
阅读文章内容,并根据第一段“Sleeping in a noisy room isn't only distracting (使人分心的), and it can also harm your health.(在嘈杂的房间里睡觉不仅会让人分心,还会损害你的健康)”和第二段“In a new review of previously published studies, researchers from Germany and Denmark took a look at the ways in which noises, such as an airplane passing by or jackhammer digging in the ground can affect our hearts.(在一篇对之前发表的研究的最新综述中,来自德国和丹麦的研究人员研究了飞机飞过或钻地时发出的声音对我们心脏的影响)”可知,本文着重讲述了德国和丹麦的研究人员对于噪声如何影响人们的心脏进行了研究。 D. How Noise Pollution Harms Our Body(噪音污染如何危害我们的身体)适合作本文最佳标题。故选D。
C
Most glitter(小发光物品), which is made up of tiny pieces of plastic, is a huge danger to the environment. “Everyone talks about the mountain of plastic floating in the ocean. You can grab empty bottles from the water, but with tiny pieces, it’s impossible,” says Victor Alvarez, a chemical engineer who sells an eco-friendly alternative to glitter.
In the early 2,000s, Alvarez worked for Mercedes-Benz in Germany, where he became fond of any technology that protected the environment. A few years after leaving Mercedes-Benz, he founded Blue Sun International in Miami, which makes specialty ingredients for the skin and hair care industries.
Glitter is a popular ingredient in cosmetics, such as eye shadows and lipsticks. So Alvarez began researching an alternative that didn’t contain plastic to make his products safer for the environment. That’s when he came across Ronald Britton Ltd., a company which had developed a plastic-free, biodegradable product called Bioglitter. It is made from regenerative cellulose(纤维素) sourced from hardwoods, primarily eucalyptus(桉树). Alvarez worked with the company to become the first retailer to sell Bioglitter in America. In 2018, he formed Today Glitter in order to sell the biodegradable glitter directly to consumers through its website.
Today Glitter sells two kinds of biodegradable glitter Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure. Both are almost plastic-free and can biodegrade in a short time. Meanwhile, they are as shiny as regular glitter. All these products are third-party tested by T V, an international organization that provides testing and certification for compostable (可降解的) and biodegradable products.
Despite its benefits, the hardwoods needed to make biodegradable glitter cause it to cost about twice as much as conventional glitter. A small glass container that contains just 6 grams of Bioglitter costs $10, while the same amount of regular glitter could cost at least half that amount. Alvarez expects the price will come down over time. He also expects the company’s sales to cross $1 million next year. But more importantly, Alvarez says, his main goal is to effect a meaningful change.
28. While at Mercedes Benz, Alvarez .
A. developed a way to grab glitter in the sea B. became interested in the environment
C. attempted to live a plastic-free life D. created a kind of harmless glitter
29. What do we know about Bioglitter
A. It is a plastic-free ingredient for eye shadows.
B. It will soon be on sale in the American market.
C. It is very difficult to break down in the wild.
D. It was invented by Blue Sun International.
30. Why does the author mention T V in the text
A. To show Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure are popular.
B. To stress it provides a broad range of testing services.
C. To prove Today Glitter’s products are eco-friendly.
D. To explain many plastic products are low-quality.
31. What is the problem faced by Today Glitter at present
A. The complex process of making glitter. B. How to expand its overseas market.
C. How to attract potential investors. D. The high cost of raw materials.
B 29. A 30. C 31. D
根据第二段中“In the early 2,000s, Alvarez worked for Mercedes-Benz in Germany, where he became fond of any technology that protected the environment.(21世纪初,Alvarez在德国的梅赛德斯——奔驰公司工作,在那里他喜欢上了任何保护环境的技术。)”
根据第三段“Glitter is a popular ingredient in cosmetics, such as eye shadows and lipsticks. In 2018, he formed Today Glitter in order to sell the biodegradable glitter directly to consumers through its website.(闪光片是化妆品中的一种流行成分,如眼影和唇膏。 故选A项。

Meanwhile, they are as shiny as regular glitter. All these products are third-party tested by T V, an international organization that provides testing and certification for compostable (可降解的) and biodegradable products.( Today Glitter销售两种可生物降解的闪光片biogitter Sparkle和biogitter Pure。
根据最后一段“Despite its benefits, the hardwoods needed to make biodegradable glitter cause it to cost about twice as much as conventional glitter. A small glass container that contains just 6 grams of Bioglitter costs $10, while the same amount of regular glitter could cost at least half that amount.(尽管有这些好处,但制造可生物降解闪光片所需的硬木使其成本大约是传统闪光片的两倍。一个装有6克生物亮片的小玻璃容器的价格为10美元,而同样数量的普通亮片的价格至少是这个价格的一半。)”可知,Today Glitter面临的问题是原材料的高成本。故选D项。
D
Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to petitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.
To begin with, sports teach children life skills. A formal athlete stated, “I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren’t just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic(行为准则), and learning why that’s important.” In short, playing highly competitive sports teaches kids many life skills like teamwork. People will have to use teamwork for the rest of their life, and sports can help them improve that skill. Taking part in sports can help develop a positive attitude towards life, which will help in the long run.
Sports are also good for kids because they provide health benefits. It is healthier for a kid to play a sport competitively than to waste time playing video games all day. Furthermore, a research group of University of California said, “96 percent of the participants(参与者) said they enjoy their sports. They’re all loving life.” That is to say, kids playing highly competitive sports tend to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.
On the other hand, some people might argue that competitive sports are bad for young children because they are so time-consuming. However, the time spent is not “robbing” kids of their childhood, but offers unique opportunities. Athletes can get success to live their dream life by playing sports. Even though sports are time-consuming, they offer distinctive opportunities.
In conclusion, competitive sports are good for children because they can provide wholesome benefits, create new experiences, and build skills that will last a lifetime.
32. Why is the formal athlete mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To show a reason B. To give an example.
C. To list a background. D. To draw out a new point.
33. What is the most participants’ attitude to sports
A. Supportive. B. Uncertain. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
34. What does the underlined word “distinctive” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Common B. Unreasonable C. Unique. D. Frequent.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The ways to play sports.
B. The reasons for playing sports.
C. The problems of kids’ playing sports.
D. The benefits of kids’ playing sports.
B 33. A 34. C 35. D

通读全文可知,第一段最后一句“Competitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.(竞技体育对幼儿有好处,因为它们教会了孩子生活技能,有益于健康,并提供了特殊的机会。)”引出主题,即体育运动对孩子有许多好处,接着第二、三、四段具体介绍了体育运动的好处,并在最后一段“In conclusion, competitive sports are good for children because they can provide wholesome benefits, create new experiences, and build skills that will last a lifetime.(总之,竞技体育对孩子们有好处,因为它们可以提供有益健康的好处,创造新的体验,并培养终身的技能。)”

B. Münzel will continue other studies on brain diseases.
C. Benefits of airport owners are more important than health.
