As of Sunday, Palo Alto High School and 19 other student-led teams have been on an eight-day, 1, 400-mile trip for the 30th annual Solar Car Challenge. Students from across the country built roadworthy solar cars and are driving them on freeways from the starting point in Fort Worth, Texas, to Palmdale, California.
The Palo Alto team, made up of 13 juniors, spent six months building their car, which they’ve named “The Beast”. At the end of each school day, students would meet at an off-campus workshop to work. The work typically involved late nights to problem-solve.
The Beast has three wheels on an ATV system that the students fixed to an open metal frame. Its flat roof is completely covered with solar panels. The car’s electric motor can go up to 50 mph, but the team is driving it at about 20 to 30 mph. The Solar Car Challenge is not a race. The winning team is the one that shows the most strategy and efficiency by covering the most total miles.
“The world sort of caught up to us,” said Lehman Marks, founder of the Solar Car Challenge, and also a retired physics teacher. He started the challenge in 1993 to develop students’ interest in science and engineering. At that time, electric cars were rare. But they have since become more efficient and affordable. With help from government green energy initiatives (倡议), electric vehicles are even projected to outsell gasoline-powered cars by 2050.
Marks’ program has grown as well. The Solar Car Challenge now includes 261 teams in 39 states, in addition to Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Spain and Singapore. “Though with no cash prizes, we’re spinning (编织) dreams for these kids,” he said.
This year, he expects 200, 000 people will come out to watch the high schoolers drive their solar vehicles across the southwestern US.
24. Which can best describe the work of designing “The Beast”
A. Painstaking. B. Conventional. C. Money-consuming. D. Highly-competitive.
25. What feature does the winning car of the team have
A. The fastest speed. B. The least gas consumption.
C. The strongest motor power. D. The longest efficient driving miles.
26. What is the original aim of the Solar Car Challenge
A. To catch up to the global tendency. B. To encourage the use of clean energy.
C. To pick out talents with creative thinking. D. To inspire love for science and engineering.
27. What can we know about the Solar Car Challenge
A. It offers cash rewards. B. It lasts a week.
C. It is an international project. D. It was founded by the government.

The 1973 horror film “The Exorcist” and “Silent Night, Deadly Night” released in 1984 were so scary that audiences left the theater up and out—throwing up and passing out, that is.
Based on this evidence after the release, it would seem to most people that horror movies are bad for people’s health. Yet experts actually argue exactly the opposite: The Halloween tradition of watching scary movies is actually good for your mental health.
“There is some research on this in psychology, but I think what’s basically been found is that there’s a benefit to recalling fears in your mind,” Matthew Strohl, the author of Why It’s OK to Love Bad Movies, told Salon. “You can gain a sense of distance from them. You feel you can conquer them through this sort of exposure, as it were, by repeatedly putting yourself in a position where you have to engage with them. But because it’s in a fictional (虚构的) artistic context, you can deal with them.”
Frank T. McAndrew, who has studied how places can “creep” people out (让人害怕)—researched on the science behind how horror movies are in many ways ideal as a specific vehicle for meeting this need to be scared.
“That is kind of born with us,” McAndrew pointed out. “We like stories. We like to learn through the experience of other people. We learn valuable lessons that might be kind of costly to learn on our own. So we are attracted by horror movies and horror experiences because by watching other people deal with scary things, we can mentally practice strategies that will make us better prepared for dealing with that ourselves in the future.”
Whether it is turning down the movie’s volume, covering your eyes, or reminding yourself that it is just a movie, McAndrew said “that kind of playful engagement with fear can not only help people avoid fainting from horror in face of a horror movie, but also handle the pressure and anxieties of the real world.”
28. How experts’ opinion differs from most people’s belief
A. People like horror movies. B. Horror films are actually beneficial.
C. Horror may cause physical discomfort. D. Halloween tradition is watching horror movies.
29. Which statement might Matthew Strohl agree with
A. Horror films can give people a sense of control.
B. Fears can keep people away from scary films.
C. Fears in life differ from those caused by scary films.
D. Not everyone can appreciate the beauty of fictional arts.
30. What does “That” underlined in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. The appeal for a vehicle. B. The need for fear.
C. The fear for some places. D. The science behind horror.
31. In which aspect can scary film lovers perform better
A. Studying literature and art. B. Writing film reviews.
C. Dealing with stress and anxiety. D. Interacting with others.
D
Individual innovation is considered one sign of intelligence within species, and elephants are among the animals that researchers have long taken an interest in because of their approach to problem solving. A newly published study in the journal Animal Behaviour details findings from a six-month-long study documenting the abilities of individual wild Asian elephants to access food by solving puzzles that unlocked storage boxes.
“This is the first research study to show that individual wild elephants have different willingness and abilities to solve problems in order to get food,” said the study’s lead author Sarah Jacobson. “This is important knowledge, because how animals think and innovate may influence their ability to survive in environments that are rapidly changing due to human presence.”
Conducted at the Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, the study used motion-activated cameras to observe 77 wild Asian elephants who approached and decided whether to attempt opening puzzle boxes with three different compartments (隔间) that contained their favorite fruit—jackfruit. Depending on the compartments with which the elephant interacted, the jackfruit could be accessed by pulling on a chain so the door opened toward the elephant, pushing the door so that it swung open into the box, or sliding the door open to the right. The elephants had to independently interact with the puzzle boxes to discover how the compartments could be opened.
Over time, 44 of the elephants who approached the puzzle boxes interacted with them, but there were individual differences in how innovative the elephants were. The researchers found that elephants who interacted with the puzzle boxes more frequently and with greater persistence were more successful in getting food from all three different compartments.
“Conflict involving humans and elephants is increasing due to loss of natural habitat and agricultural encroachment into what is left of it, ” said the study’s principal investigator Dr. Joshua Plotnik, a psychology professor with the CUNY Graduate Center and Hunter College, and Sarah Jacobson’s dissertation advisor. “Investigating innovation and problem solving in elephants can inform our understanding of wild elephants’ cognitive flexibility and its potential impact on conservation management and human-elephant conflict mitigation.”
32. What can be learned from what Sarah Jacobson said
A. They are the first to study wild elephants’ diet habits.
B Many factors are threatening wild elephants’ survival.
C Wild elephants’ capability of solving problems differs.
D. Wild elephants can think and act just as human beings.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The various methods to get the fruit. B. The elephants’ effort to get the fruit.
C. The importance of doors in the study. D. The equipment used in the experiment.
34. Which can best replace the underlined word “encroachment” in paragraph 5
A. Position. B. Occupancy. C. Mode. D. Leak.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Wild Elephants Have Many Ways to Obtain Food
B. Individual Wild Elephant Has the Same Innovation
C. Wild Elephants Are Showing an Interest in Puzzles
D. Wild Elephants Display Unique Puzzle Solving Skills

Ear Potatoes
“I think the bathtub (浴缸) is just about full.” My grandfather shouted.
“Okay, Grampa!” I answered and quickly picked up the cool-as-could-be soap crayons (蜡笔) my grandparents had for the bathtub. My grandparents always had the coolest toys for us grandchildren. At that time, I was six years old and it was the first time that I stayed out with my grandparents.
“Alright, Gwen. Just be sure to clean well behind your ears. You don’t want to start growing potatoes behind your ears, do you ”
“Potatoes ” I stopped dead in my tracks and turned to look back at my grandfather.
“Yep, potatoes. You know if you have too much dirt behind your ears, potatoes just might sprout (发芽) and start growing there,” my grandfather explained as my eyes widened.
“But I don’t have potatoes behind my ears, Grampa,” I ran my fingers along the backs of my ears.
“I thought I saw just a couple sprouts starting earlier.” My grandfather took a quick look. “Yep, right there! Sure enough, I see two little sprouts. You’d better wash them nice and good, Gwen.” My eyes remained wide as could be as I nodded rather doubtfully since this was the first time I had heard of this.
Why have my parents never warned me this could happen I sat in the bathtub, washing my ears while drew plentiful drawings all over the bathtub walls with the soap crayons. I used up nearly an entire bar of soap washing behind my ears that evening, just to be sure I got those little potato sprouts good and cleaned away.
I did not forget this bit of wisdom my grandfather had given me for years to come and I was always very careful about cleaning behind my ears.
A few years later, I was at another fun-filled sleepover (夜宿) with my grandparents. After I got out of the bath for the evening and finished brushing my teeth, I pulled out the little handheld mirror from one of the drawers in the bathroom and placed it behind each of my ears, looking very careful for signs of potato sprouts.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

M: A student credit card How in the world did you get one of these
W: I got an application in the mail.
M: Well why did you get one in the first place
W: Listen. Times are changing, and having a credit card helps you build a credit rating, control spending, and even buy things that you can’t pay with cash.
M: And how in the world are you going to pay off your credit card bill
W: Uh... with my birthday money It’s coming up in a week.
M: Hey, let’s sit down and talk about how you’re going to pay things back, and maybe we can come up with a budget that will help you get out of this mess.

M: What would you like to do in the future
W: I’d like to become a nurse like you.
M: It’s a difficult job. I’m a registered nurse, but there are a lot of different types of nurses. If you’re willing to get an advanced degree, you could become a clinical nurse specialist.
W: I don’t think I want to spend a lot of time in school.
M: Then you just need a little more training after your bachelor’s degree.
W: Well, I dropped out of college.
M: Hmm, then you might want to consider becoming a nursing assistant. You’ll still need to go through a training program, though.
W: That still sounds like a lot of studying.
M: You do want to work in nursing, don’t you
W: I do, but I thought all I’d have to do is serve meals, talk to the patients, and make them comfortable. That’s what they do on TV.
M: Then my advice to you is to become an actress and play a nurse on TV. I think that might be the closest if you’re going to get to the nursing profession.

A 25. D 26. D 27. C

B Fears can keep people away from scary films.
B 29. A 30. B 31. C

根据第三段Matthew Strohl说的“...but I think what’s basically been found is that there’s a benefit to recalling fears in your mind(但我认为基本上已经发现的是,在脑海中回忆恐惧是有好处的)”“You can gain a sense of distance from them. You feel you can conquer them through this sort of exposure, as it were, by repeatedly putting yourself in a position where you have to engage with them. But because it’s in a fictional (虚构的) artistic context, you can deal with them.(你可以获得与它们的距离感。你觉得你可以通过这种暴露来征服它们,可以说,通过反复地把自己放在一个必须与它们接触的位置。但因为这是一个虚构的艺术背景,你可以处理它们。)”可知,在看恐怖电影时,人们会接触到令人害怕的事物,但知道那些并不是真实存在的。多次观看后,人们便能克服对它们的恐惧感,进而更好地控制自己的恐惧,故选A项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。that指代上文提到的事情,根据第四段中“researched on the science behind how horror movies are in many ways ideal as a specific vehicle for meeting this need to be scared(研究了恐怖电影恐怖电影是满足恐惧需求的理想载体背后的科学原理)”可知,That 指代上文内容“this need to be scared(对害怕这一情绪的需求)”,故选B项。

B. Many factors are threatening wild elephants’ survival.
C. Wild elephants’ capability of solving problems differs.
D. Wild elephants can think and act just as human beings.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The various methods to get the fruit. B. The elephants’ effort to get the fruit.
C. The importance of doors in the study. D. The equipment used in the experiment.
34. Which can best replace the underlined word “encroachment” in paragraph 5
A. Position. B. Occupancy. C. Mode. D. Leak.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Wild Elephants Have Many Ways to Obtain Food
B. Individual Wild Elephant Has the Same Innovation
C. Wild Elephants Are Showing an Interest in Puzzles
D. Wild Elephants Display Unique Puzzle Solving Skills
C 33. A 34. B 35. D

故填have taken。
根据结构判断填it作宾语,it指代The far side。故填it。
with the goal of“目的是……”。故填with。
故填to deepen。
故填and。
故填is planned。

This weekend, my classmates carried out a survey about white pollution or plastic pollution in the street.
Nearly all the people we interviewed agreed that it was really a serious problem facing the human beings and that we should take immediate action to tackle it. However, when it came to their action, it was a little letdown because few of them say no to single-use plastic whether in the supermarkets or in the restaurants.
So I think, to solve this problem, we should start from ourselves, trying not to use plastic products, especially single-use plastic ones. Only in this way can we protect our earth.

I did not forget this bit of wisdom my grandfather had given me for years to come, and I was always very careful about cleaning behind my ears.

“What are you looking at behind your ears, Gwen ” My grandmother asked when she came in. She picked up my towel and helped me finish up before going to bed. While I checked behind my ears after each and every bath, my grandmother just so happened to catch me in my curious act at this particular sleepover. “Looking for potato sprouts,” I told her very matter-of-factly. “Potato sprouts ” “Yeah, Grampa told me all about it. If I get too much dirt behind my ears and don’t clean them well, potatoes will start sprouting and growing there.”
Hearing my words, my grandmother burst into laughter. “Oh, honey. Your ears are perfectly clean, but even if there is a little dirt back there, you cannot grow potatoes behind your ears,” she informed me. I processed this new information for a little bit. I looked very seriously at my grandmother and realized she was not joking. “Oh, Grampa. I believed this joke for years!” I shook my head and had a good, long laugh with my grandmother. After all, my grandpa impressed the importance of staying clean on me.
