I still remember my friends giving me the advice: Get a hobby. I was stressed and, of course, also on my phone too much. I was writing about food for work, so cooking didn’t really count as a hobby anymore, nor did reading, nor socializing, especially since all of my friends worked in my industry. I needed something in my life that existed apart from all that.
Cooking had once been the thing I did to relax when I got home from work, the thing I was curious about. The kitchen had once been a release, but now it was part of my professional life. It needed a replacement. A few months later, I dutifully signed up for a ceramics(制陶艺术) class at a studio near my apartment.
Powerlessness, for an amateur, can be its own draw. At the studio, I started as a lazy learner, but after a few months I became crazy, signing up for more classes when my session ended. I had something to be curious about, and my goals were unrelated to outer forces: a boss, a job, a market, a reader. Unlike with writing, my progress was quantifiable: Now I can make a vase this tall. Now my handles are beautiful. Now I have made two things that more or less look like a pair.
Finally finding a hobby that was just for my own enjoyment was enjoyable. I enjoyed having something to do that didn’t involve a screen and therefore felt far from the style of work to which I was most accustomed —hands covered in clay cannot swipe(滑屏) very well.
Making time for this also means carving out time, for creation and inspiration, and also for the rest that is required for me to reflect on my life. This is something I desire more than a new hobby. This is peace.

A. A career in making vases. B. A sense of success.
C. A group of new friends. D. An enjoyable job.
7 What’s the writing purpose of this text

People who play games —such as cards and board games —are more likely to staymentally sharp in later life, a study suggests. Those who regularly played non-digital gamesscored better on memory and thinking tests in their 70s, the research found.
Psychologists at the University of Edinburgh tested more than 1,000 people aged 70 formemory, problem-solving, thinking speed and general thinking ability. The participants thenrepeated the same thinking tests every three years until aged 79. The group were also askedhow often they played games like cards, chess or crosswords —at ages 70 and 76. Researchers used statistical models to analyse the relationship between a person’s level ofgame playing and their thinking skills. The team took into account the results of anintelligence test that the participants sat when they were 11 years old. They also consideredlifestyle factors, such as education, socio-economic status and activity levels.
People who increased game playing in later years were found to have experienced lessdecline in thinking skills in their seventies —particularly in memory function and thinking speed. Researchers say the findings help to better understand what kinds of lifestyles and behaviors might be associated with better outcomes for cognitive(认知的)health in later life.
The study may also help people make decisions about how best to protect their thinkingskills as they age. Dr Drew, a psychologist in Edinburgh, said: “These latest findings add toevidence that being more engaged in activities during the life course might be associated with better thinking skills in later life. For those in their 70s or beyond, another message seems to bethat playing non-digital games may be a positive behavior in terms of reducing cognitivedecline.”
The connection between playing board games and other non-digital games later in lifeand sharper thinking and memory skills adds to what we know about steps we can take to protect our cognitive health, including not drinking extra alcohol, being active and eating ahealthy diet.
8. Which type of games does the research primarily focus on
A. Non-digital games. B. Outdoor games.
C. Digital games. D. Mobile games
9. What’s the purpose of taking the intelligence test for the subjects at age 11
A. To evaluate their school performance.
B. To predict their future cognitive abilities.
C. To give them a score to compare with others.
D. To ensure a comprehensive analysis in the study.
10. Which function was less declined in people who increased game playing in later years
A. Spatial reasoning skills. B. Social interaction skills.
C. Memory function and thinking speed. D. Problem-solving and analysis ability.
11. What else can be beneficial for cognitive health besides playing games
A. Drinking extra alcohol. B. Having a healthy diet.
C. Focusing on screen too much. D. Consuming an unhealthy diet.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B
【解析】

There was a time when we thought humans were special in so many ways. Now we know better. We are not the only species that feels emotions, or follows a moral code. Neither are we the only ones with personalities, cultures and the ability to design and use tools. Yet we all have agreed that one thing, at least, makes us unique: we alone have the capacity for language.
However, it is not always true. We humans are not so special in this respect either. Key to the revolutionary reassessment of our talent for communication is the way we think about language itself. Where once it was seen as an unusual object, today scientists find it is more productive to think of language as a group of abilities.
Tomasello of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, and others have collected a list of gestures observed in monkeys and some other animals, which reveals that gestures play a large role in their communication. In an experiment carried out in 2006 by Erica and Richard from the University of St Andrews in the UK, they got a person to sit on a chair with some highly desirable food such as banana to one side of apes (猿) and some undesirable food such as vegetables to the other. The apes, who could see the person and the food around them, gestured at their human partners to encourage them to push the desirable food their way. If the human seemed to understand while being somewhat confused, giving only half the preferred food, the apes would repeat and exaggerate (夸大) their gestures — again in exactly the same way a human would.
Such findings highlight the fact that the gestures of the animals are not merely inborn but are learned, flexible and under voluntary control — all characteristics that are considered preconditions for human-like communication. Clearly animals do have greater talents for communication than we realized. Humans are still special, but it is a far more graded, qualified kind of special than it used to be.
12. How was language traditionally viewed by scientists
A. As a group of special abilities. B. As a product of evolutionary needs.
C. As a unique ability only possessed by humans. D. As a learned trait rather than an inborn one.
13. What was the purpose of the experiment conducted by Erica and Richard in 2006
A. To test the eating habits of apes.
B. To understand how apes react to human presence.
C. To determine if apes have a preference for certain foods.
D. To study the communication abilities of apes through gestures.
14. What’s the function of the gestures in animals according to the research
A. Only used for finding food. B. Inborn and cannot be changed.
C. Not significant in communication. D. Flexible and adaptable based on context.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Animals Think by Using Gestures B. So You Think Humans Are Unique
C. Language Involves Animals’Gestures D. The Similarity Between Humans And Apes
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. B

If the human seemed to understand while being somewhat confused, giving only half the preferred food, the apes would repeat and exaggerate (夸大) their gestures — again in exactly the same way a human would.
根据最后一段“Such findings highlight the fact that the gestures of the animals are not merely inborn but are learned, flexible and under voluntary control — all characteristics that are considered preconditions for human-like communication. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
If there was one thing Jill could wish for, it was to feel special, because she couldn't remember that she ever had.
Going to school didn't help. Jill was not the top student in her class, like Emma was. While she was certainly not at the bottom of the class, she wished she could be more like Emma. Jill noticed when report cards were handed out at school that Emma's mom was always at the gate waiting for her. After studying Emma's card, her mom would give Emma a big hug. But Jill's report card always said, “could do better” or “could try harder.” Her parents said the same when she brought it home, “We are pleased to see that you passed everything, but maybe you can do better next term.”
Jill didn't feel special at having lots of friends. Kathy was the one in the class who seemed to do that much better than anyone else and Jill wished she could be more like Kathy. Kathy was always laughing and joking and telling stories. Everyone wanted to be her friend. Jill was not without friends. It was just that she didn't get invited to every birthday party like Kathy did. So when some kids were asked, and she was not, she felt decidedly unhappy.
One afternoon after school, Jill walked past Emma, who was desperately pulling all the contents out of her bag. “What's the matter ” asked Jill. “I lost my math homework sheet,” said Emma, “and it's due tomorrow, I don't know what to do.” Jill said, “You can come to my home and we can do it together.” When they had completed their math assignment, Emma expressed her thanks to Jill. Jill felt a tiny feeling of being special for helping someone she admired. Before leaving, Emma said to Jill, “You know, it's hard always being at the top of the class; your parents and teachers expect so much of you. I often wish I was like you and didn't have all these pressures.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
A day or two later Jill came across Kathy crying in the girls' restroom by herself.

Jill was surprised that Emma and Kathy could wish they were just like her.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
A day or two later Jill came across Kathy crying in the girls' restroom by herself “What's wrong ” asked Jill. “Everyone always expects me to be funny,” said Kathy. “But there are times when I feel sad or just simply don't want to be funny. The other kids don't seem to understand.” Jill listened, nodding understandably while Kathy talked about her feelings and how she felt the pressure to live up to others' expectations. When the tears had stopped, she said, “You know. Jill, there are many times when I wish I was just like you.
Jill was surprised that Emma and Kathy could wish they were just like her Never had she realized she was the one admired. She was even more surprised when Kathy gave her a big hug, saying. “Many thanks.” It surprised Jill, too, how she began to see things differently from that on. Maybe she didn't need to be the best at any one thing. Maybe she didn't need to be special at anything in particular. Maybe it was enough just to know that she was special being who she was.

4. What did cooking mean to the author in the past
A. It was her profession. B. It caused her to stress out.

6. What did the author gain from the ceramics lessons
A. A career in making vases. B. A sense of success.
C. A group of new friends. D. An enjoyable job.
7. What’s the writing purpose of this text

C. To help readers choose a new hobby. D. To show the benefits of having a hobby.

D
Such findings highlight the fact that the gestures of the animals are not merely inborn but are learned flexible and under voluntary control — all characteristics that are considered preconditions for human-like communication.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
A day or two later Jill came across Kathy crying in the girls' restroom by herself.
