My life at senior high was about to start. I knew it was never easy — higher expectations from my parents, stricter teachers, etc. But the most challenging was how I could do well in my studies with so many difficult subjects. Anyway, I was waiting for it in my eagerness.
The day before the first day of school, I was still nervous, when the phone rang. It was a recording of our head teacher. Sounding truly serious, she said that school was canceled on Monday and would be delayed until Tuesday. This was because of the fire in the La Canada-Flintridge area near my community. My school was being used as a shelter. Though I agreeably accepted the extra day of vacation, I appeared disappointed on purpose and told my mom “It’s a pity!”
On Monday evening, I was preparing for my big day. My backpack was filled with new textbooks and notebooks. Then the phone rang. Again a recording of the serious-toned head teacher told us to stay home: the fire was still going and it would be impossible to go to school with smoke still thick in the air. I could feel my anxiety growing inside of me. When was school going to start I wished the first day of school would hurry up and come so that I could get it over with.
Finally it was Wednesday. The real first day of my school. I walked into campus feeling butterflies in my stomach even though I had walked these same grounds for three years because the junior school is next door. But as I started getting around with the classmates, teachers and courses, though it was my first day I already felt like I was well on my way toward a successful high school life.

C. The fire had spread to the school. D. The school would start on Tuesday.

If a scientist’s first language is not English, would it be truly difficult to publish an article in an international journal Recent study looked at tons of scientific journals in the field of biology and found that they don’t do much to help scientists who are not native English speakers. The study found most of these journals judge articles based on how well they are written in English. This can be a problem for scientists who are not fluent in English because they have to work harder to make sure their papers can be published in international journals.
“The role of journals is huge because they can be a source of language barriers (障碍), but they also have the ability to solve many of the barriers,” says Tatsuya Amano, a biodiversity researcher. He added that though some journals have started to offer tools to help scientists whose first language is not English, such examples are still rare.”
Another study by Amano found that non-native English speakers are more likely to have their papers rejected because of writing issues compared to native English speakers. This shows that the language unfairness in journals can have serious consequences for scientists who are not native English speakers.
So apart from waiting for the journals, what can non-native scientists do One solution is to work with other scientists from English-speaking countries. They can help to check the writing skillfully to double the possibility of being published by the international journal.
27. What do most international journals judge articles based on
A. The nationality of the author. B. The influence of the scientists.
C. The fluency of English writing. D. The quality of the research result.
28. What does the underlined word “rejected” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Published. B. Praised. C. Refused. D. Recognized.
29. Which of the following is suggested in the last paragraph
A. Work with native English scientists. B. Ask publishers for help to check errors.
C. Improve English before writing a paper. D. Practice reading and writing in daily life.
30. Which can be a suitable title for the text

When I was young, we lived in a small town. Everyone knew Roy as he was a top student in the town. He was of my age, but he lost his parents in an accident at the age of 8. So he lived alone and delivered newspapers to support himself and his education.
Every time he delivered newspapers to our home, he wore a broad smile on his face and greeted my mom gently. My mom was greatly surprised when she knew his daily routine. He got up every morning by 5 o’clock and walked 5 kilometers from where he lived to the newspaper office to collect the newspapers. By 6:00, he carried 50 pieces of newspapers — more than 5 kilograms and walked 3 kilometers back. After sending the newspapers, he rushed another 3 kilometers home to cook a simple breakfast before hurrying to school.
This morning, seeing he left hurriedly in a strong wind, my mom and I decided to do something for him. After school, I waited for him at the school gate and told him that my mom would like to invite him to our home. When he asked why, I replied, “You will know soon!” Thinking for a short while, he followed me to my home nearby. It was possible that he assumed my mom would continue to subscribe to the newspaper.

24. What worried the author most about his high school life
A. Stricter teachers. B. Higher expectations.
C. Study pressure. D. New environment.
25. How did the author feel when he heard the school would start on Tuesday
A. Regretful. B. Disappointed. C. Nervous. D. Happy.
26. What news did the author receive on Monday evening
A. The fire had been put out. B. The school was canceled again.
C. The fire had spread to the school. D. The school would start on Tuesday.
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. B

I am sorry to learn about your struggle. Take it easy, and I have been there.
It could be your time-management. You can improve by planning and then give different importance to the tasks. Try to break down every task into smaller steps and reward yourself if possible. Moreover, try the “5-minute rule” - stay focused on a task for just 5 minutes, and you’ll often find yourself continuing once you’ve started. Last but not least, do find a quiet study space away from TVs, phones, and other distractions.
Hopefully my advice will be of some help. Looking forward to your reply.

【答案】范文
My mom stood at the door, waiting for us. As soon as she saw us, she rushed over to give us a big hug and then led us to the dining room. We invited Roy to join us for dinner, and though he hesitated at first, he eventually accepted. As my mom filled up his plate, he said it brought back memories of happy days spent with his parents. Later, as he prepared to leave, I stepped inside and brought out a new bike. “This is for you,” my mom said with a smile.
Seeing the bike in front of him, he couldn’t hold back his tears. With tears of gratitude rolling down his cheeks, he kept saying, “Thank you so much.” My mom wiped his tears and put her arm around his shoulders. We told him we were shocked to learn that he had to walk 11 miles before going to school. So we hoped this bike would make his life easier. We helped him because we admired him.
