When Joel Bueno informed his parents that he wanted to play music just like his elder twin brothers, the couple were shocked. It seemed an impossible wish to satisfy their adorable boy. But then they found Eye Harp—a gaze-activated digital instrument that their son, diagnosed with cerebral palsy (大脑性瘫痪), could play. Sitting in a hotel lobby about to go on stage, Joel says the Eye Harp—the name of the instrument as well as the company—brings him joy. But more than that, it enables him to express a range of emotions with others.
Zacharias Vamvakousis is the creative force behind Eye Harp. In 2008, he began looking into ways for disabled people to play music when a friend of his had a motorcycle accident that threatened his ability to play the guitar. It set him on a path that integrated his musical passion with his computer science skills.
Eye Harp became a mission. For many people with severe disabilities, expressing basic thoughts and feelings—let alone intentional creative expression—can be a challenge. But Dr. Vamvakousis’ combination of art and technology enables users to communicate from their soul by translating the smallest movements into musical notes on digital instruments of their choice. He created the not-for-profit Eye Harp Association in 2019, with the goal of making musical expression available to all.
The Eye Harp is in its fifth version. Now he’s focused on making the instrument as user-friendly as possible for music teachers and therapists (治疗师).“Playing music is a process that requires studying and having music classes,”he notes.“So if we want it to reach many people, we have to reach first the music teachers.”
Globally, around 50 million people could benefit from augmented (增强的) and alternative communication technology, Dr. Vamvakousis estimates. Currently, he says, fewer than 2% are so equipped. So far, around 650 people are using either the basic or advanced versions of Eye Harp.
24. Why is Joel Bueno’s experience mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To show his passion for music. B. To introduce a cure for a brain disease.
C. To praise his strong will against disability. D. To present the function of a digital instrument.
25. What inspired Dr. Vamvakousis to invent Eye Harp
A. His sympathy for Joel Bueno. B. His eagerness to help his friend.
C. His pursuit of becoming a musician. D. His ambition to get a master’s degree.
26. What does Dr. Vamvakousis think of Eye Harp
A. It is thought poorly of. B. It is an expensive device.
C. It has benefited millions of people. D. It has an enormous potential market.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Music: A Good Way to Find Your Inner Voice
B. Zacharias Vamvakousis: A Creative Musician
C. Eye Harp: New Hope for Disabled Music Lovers
D. Joel Bueno: A Disabled Boy with Strong Willingness
D 25. B 26. D 27. C
根据第一段内容“But then they found Eye Harp—a gaze-activated digital instrument that their son, diagnosed with cerebral palsy (大脑性瘫痪), could play. Sitting in a hotel lobby about to go on stage, Joel says the Eye Harp—the name of the instrument as well as the company—brings him joy. But more than that, it enables him to express a range of emotions with others.(但后来他们发现了 Eye Harp——一种由目光激活的数字乐器,他们被诊断为脑瘫的儿子可以演奏。坐在酒店大厅里准备上台的乔尔说, Eye Harp——乐器和公司的名字——给他带来了快乐。但更重要的是,它使他能够与他人表达一系列的情感。)”可知,Eye Harp 帮助患有大脑性瘫痪的 Joel Bueno实现了演奏音乐的梦想,展示了Eye Harp的功能。故选D。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段内容“Zacharias Vamvakousis is the creative force behind Eye Harp. In 2008, he began looking into ways for disabled people to play music when a friend of his had a motorcycle accident that threatened his ability to play the guitar. It set him on a path that integrated his musical passion with his computer science skills.( Zacharias Vamvakousis是Eye Harp背后的创意力量。2008年,当他的一个朋友因摩托车事故而无法弹吉他时,他开始研究残疾人演奏音乐的方法。这让他走上了一条将音乐激情与计算机科学技能相结合的道路。)”可知,Zacharias Vamvakousis 是在他的朋友因遭遇车祸而无法弹吉他之后,开始研究如何将音乐和电脑技术相结合,最终开发了 Eye Harp来帮助他的朋友。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Globally, around 50 million people could benefit from augmented (增强的) and alternative communication technology, Dr. Vamvakousis estimates. Currently, he says, fewer than 2% are so equipped.( Vamvakousis博士估计,全球约有5000万人可以从增强和替代通信技术中受益。他说,目前只有不到2%的人有这样的装备。)”可知,全世界5000万的目标人群中只有不到2%的人装备了Eye Harp,所以它的潜在市场巨大。故选D。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Eye Harp became a mission. For many people with severe disabilities, expressing basic thoughts and feelings—let alone intentional creative expression—can be a challenge. But Dr. Vamvakousis’ combination of art and technology enables users to communicate from their soul by translating the smallest movements into musical notes on digital instruments of their choice.( Eye Harp变成了一项使命。对于许多有严重残疾的人来说,表达基本的想法和感受——更不用说有意的创造性表达了——可能是一个挑战。但Vamvakousis博士将艺术和技术结合起来,通过将最小的动作转换成他们选择的数字乐器上的音符,使用户能够从他们的灵魂中交流)”内容可知,本文主要介绍了Eye Harp这一发明帮助残疾人演奏音乐来表达情感,重燃人生希望。故选C。
C
How much stress is good for an athlete Surprisingly, since modern, professional sport of all sorts now seems to be in the hands of computers, no one knows. The reason is that, to avoid decreases in performance of equal and opposite magnitude (量级), top athletes are rarely willing to carry even the tiniest monitoring devices when in competition. And when they are not in competition such measurements would be meaningless.
However, two researchers, Lu Yunfeng and Zhong Songfa, think they have found a way. Dr Lu’s eyes brightened when watching the 2020 Olympic Games on television. He noticed that in the archery contests, competitors’ heart rates were shown as they stood at the mark and shot. Heart rate is well known as an indicator of psychological stress, so he saw this as an opportunity.
When they dug into the matter, the two researchers found that 122 of the 128 archers in the games had agreed to have their heart rates measured. The trick was that, since competitors were unchangeable, their heart rates could be monitored remotely by a technique called photo plethysmography, which registers changes in the reflectivity (反射率) of skin caused by flushing (脸红) when the heart pumps. Altogether, they were able to match heart rate to score for 2,247 shots.
Overall, archers with higher heart rates had lower scores and those with lower rates, higher ones. The average rate for an archer who hit ten-ring was 134.2 beats per minute. It was 135.7 for nine-ring. And for eight-ring it was 137.9. Overall, Dr Zhong and Dr Lu calculated that each extra heartbeat per minute resulted in a 0.004 point decrease in score.
These findings support the theory that the performance of even some of the world’s most outstanding athletes declines as they experience increased stress. Whether that is unique to those who need a steady aim to win, or also applies to athletes who have to run around as they compete, remains to be seen.
28. Why do top athletes refuse to carry monitoring devices in competition
A. Because they think the measurements are useless.
B. Because they fear they will affect their performance.
C. Because they think devices will increase their stress level.
D. Because they think computers are much more trustworthy.
29. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The findings of the research. B. The process of the research.
C. The features of the research. D. The inspiration of the research.
30. What does the research focus on
A. Whether monitoring techniques are necessary.
B. Why athletes’ heart rates decline during the game.
C. How stress level influences athletes’ performance.
D. What sharpens athletes’ performance in the game.
31. What does the author think of the research
A. It requires further research. B. It is far from satisfactory.
C. It emphasizes a steady aim. D. It applies to various athletes.
B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第一段中的“The reason is that, to avoid decreases in performance of equal and opposite magnitude, top athletes are rarely willing to carry even the tiniest monitoring devices when in competition.(原因是,为了避免成绩出现等量或相反幅度的下降,顶级运动员在比赛中很少愿意携带哪怕是最小的监控设备。)”
根据文章第二段“However, two researchers, Lu Yunfeng and Zhong Songfa, think they have found a way. Dr Lu’s eyes brightened when watching the 2020 Olympic Games on television. He noticed that in the archery contests, competitors’ heart rates were shown as they stood at the mark and shot. Heart rate is well known as an indicator of psychological stress, so he saw this as an opportunity.(然而,两位研究人员,卢云峰和钟松发,认为他们已经发现了一个方法。
根据第三段“The trick was that, since competitors were unchangeable, their heart rates could be monitored remotely by a technique called photo plethysmography, which registers changes in the reflectivity (反射率) of skin caused by flushing (脸红) when the heart pumps.( 其中的诀窍在于,由于运动员是不可改变的,他们的心率可以通过一种被称为“光电脉搏描记术”的技术远程监控,这种技术可以记录心脏跳动时皮肤潮红引起的反射率变化。)”和文章第四段“Overall, archers with higher heart rates had lower scores and those with lower rates, higher ones.(总的来说,心率高的弓箭手得分低,心率低的得分高。)”
根据最后一段中的“Whether that is unique to those who need a steady aim to win, or also applies to athletes who have to run around as they compete, remains to be seen.(这是否只适用于那些需要坚定目标才能获胜的人,还是也适用于那些在比赛中不得不跑来跑去的运动员,还有待观察。)” 故选A。
D
If you are a psychology enthusiast, you have probably heard of the famous marshmallow test In this task, kids are given a marshmallow, and are told that they can eat that marshmallow now, or they can wait a little while, and have two marshmallows instead. Some kids eat the marshmallow immediately, while others try their best to wait for the experimenter to come back with two marshmallows.
Wait time in the marshmallow test came to be seen as indicators of self-control. But is it really the case A 2022 study by Yanaoka and his colleagues tested the idea that children may decide how long to wait for rewards based on what they are used to waiting for in their culture. In the United States, there is no widespread custom of waiting until everyone is served to eat your food. However, in Japan, there is a mealtime custom of waiting until everyone has been served before anyone starts to eat.
Because of this difference, the researchers hypothesized that Japanese children would wait longer in the marshmallow test than the American children. This is exactly what they found. This certainly suggests that cultural standards are important. The researchers did a clever follow-up experiment. They found one situation where children in the U. S. are used to waiting longer than Japanese children are: unwrapping presents. In the U. S., when children are given gifts on special occasions such Christmas, they usually have to wait before they can unwrap their presents. In Japan, however, children usually open presents immediately.
Given these cultural differences, Yanaoka and his colleagues expected that if they ran the marshmallow test with Japanese and American kids, but they replaced marshmallows with wrapped gifts, then American kids would wait longer to open them. Once again, their theory was correct. When the potential rewards were wrapped gifts instead of food, American children waited 15 minutes on average, and Japanese children waited about four minutes on average.
32. What do we know about marshmallow test
A. Its design is perfect. B. It only tests a kid’s self-control.
C. Its results might be misunderstood. D. It is famous among kids and parents.
33. How did Yanaoka and his colleagues conduct their research
A. By listing varied gift-giving customs. B. By contradicting existing concepts.
C. By summarizing previous theories. D. By examining newly-made guesses.
34. What does the underlined word “hypothesized” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Expected. B. Designed. C. Assumed. D. Assured.
35. The children’s behavior in the marshmallow test may be determined by ______.
A. children’s age B. cultural custom C. self-confidence D. self-belief
C 33. D 34. C 35. B
根据第二段中“A 2022 study by Yanaoka and his colleagues tested the idea that children may decide how long to wait for rewards based on what they are used to waiting for in their culture. In the United States, there is no widespread custom of waiting until everyone is served to eat your food. However, in Japan, there is a mealtime custom of waiting until everyone has been served before anyone starts to eat.”(Yanaoka和他的同事们在2022年的一项研究中测试了这样一种观点,即儿童可能会根据他们在自己的文化中习惯等待的时间来决定等待奖励的时间。

根据第三、四段,尤其是第三段中的“Because of this difference, the researchers hypothesized that Japanese children would wait longer in the marshmallow test than the American children.”(由于这种差异,研究人员假设日本儿童比美国儿童在棉花糖测试中等待的时间更长。)
根据第二段中“However, in Japan, there is a mealtime custom of waiting until everyone has been served before anyone starts to eat.”(然而,在日本,有一种用餐时间的习俗,就是等到所有人都被端上来后才开始吃。)以及第三段中“This is exactly what they found. This certainly suggests that cultural standards are important. The researchers did a clever follow-up experiment.”(这正是他们的发现。
根据最后一段中的“Given these cultural differences, Yanaoka and colleagues expected that if they ran the marshmallow test with Japanese and American kids, but they replaced marshmallows with wrapped gifts, then American kids would wait longer to open them.

根据空前“Some people seem to born with a talent for making people laugh. They can quickly tell a joke and laugh at something that is not supposed to be funny immediately.(有些人似乎天生就有逗人发笑的才能。他们可以很快地讲一个笑话,并对一些不应该立即有趣的事情发笑。)”和空后“It’s something you can learn and improve. By doing the following things, you can develop your sense of humor.( 这是你可以学习和提高的。通过做下面的事情,你可以培养你的幽默感。)”可知,此段是在讲幽默感的来源。空前说幽默感可能是天生的,而空后说幽默感是我们可以通过学习来提高。因此,该空与前后是转折关系。F项“然而,有时好的幽默感并不是与生俱来的”符合语境。故选F。
【37题详解】
此空为本段首句。根据后文“Practicing humor and making people laugh involves communicating with others. Knowing what makes people annoyed and what can offend (冒犯) them is essential.( 练习幽默和逗人笑需要与他人交流。知道什么会让人生气,什么会冒犯他们是很重要的。)”和“While some people can stand this kind of comedy, others will not(有些人能够忍受调侃别人的痛苦,有些人则不能)”可知,幽默和逗人笑要与人交流,有些人能够忍受,有些人则不能,说明我们在提高幽默感时一定要考虑到听众。因此,B项“考虑到你的听众”符合语境。
【38题详解】
根据空后“While some people can stand this kind of comedy, others will not, so it’s essential to keep this in mind when trying to improve your sense of humor.(虽然有些人能忍受这种喜剧,但有些人不能,所以在试图提高你的幽默感时,记住这一点是很重要的。)”
根据空前“Try practicing with your close friends and family first, and see if they find your jokes funny.(试着先和你的亲密朋友和家人一起练习,看看他们是否觉得你的笑话有趣。)”和空后“You can also make some adjustments based on their advice.( 你也可以根据他们的建议做一些调整。)”
根据空后“Dark humor comes from unpleasant and terrible topics like death and making jokes out of such subjects. Care must be done when giving such kind of jokes as there might be sensitive people who don’t take laughter when making fun of dark situations.(黑色幽默来自不愉快和可怕的话题,如死亡,并以此为主题开玩笑。开这种玩笑的时候一定要小心,因为有些敏感的人在开黑暗的玩笑时可能会笑不出来。)”可知,后文以黑色幽默举例说明提高幽默感要关注听众。因此,C项“一个十分典型的例子就是黑色幽默”符合语境。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On the Saturday morning, I could see rays of sunlight as I said good morning to my brother, Willie aged six while I was nine. Breaking up for a summer holiday, I felt at ease and plotted (暗中策划) our own delightful day.
“Good morning, sleepy head,” Mum smiled at me. “Get yourself dressed, Shawn. Run out and collect some firewood. I’ll fix you some hotcakes.”
I slipped on my clothes, grabbed the ax and headed straight for the outhouse. There father sat freely with a bottle of beer in hand. During the summer holiday, he would find time to take us to catch some fish for supper. However, his fishing pole missing, we could have no choice but to try something different.
I walked with my chin up as I thought about what a great day this was going to be. Willie and I were going to ride our bikes into town, and I was sure we’d find some empty bottles, maybe enough to buy some ice cream, my favorite while Willie had a preference for sweets. With the birds bouncing (跳动) up and down in the tree, I thought it was going to be a great day.
Everything done, Mum’s hotcakes were waiting for me. Willie finished his breakfast in a flash.
“Mum, can we go now ” I asked, as I swallowed down the last forkful of hotcakes.
“Now, Shawn, you be careful. Willie hasn’t gone out on the roads much, so you let him ride ahead of you. Keep a good eye on him. OK ”
“Take care, Willie,”I screamed when we cycled towards a mountain called Andover, the peak of which was the perfect spot to find empty bottles. Stark’s Store paid cash, two cents each, and we thought we were rich every time Mr. Stark handed us our reward in real money. Cycled up the mountain was a lot of work, but it was worth it.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Tired but delighted, we arrived at the peak of Andover.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: In front of me was Stark’s shelves with everything kids dreamed of, but I hesitated.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tired but delighted, we arrived at the peak of Andover. It was so peaceful there. I looked up into the sky, dreaming about the ice cream at Stark’s Store. After a while, we got down to collecting empty bottles. Willie grabbed as many of the bottles as his arms could hug at one time. We placed them in a big bag. Having gathered enough bottles, we were off without delay and arrived at Stark’s, where Mr. Stark gave me enough for what we had longed for.
In front of me was Stark’s shelves with everything kids dreamed of, but I hesitated. “Hi, Shawn! I’ve done!” He definitely couldn’t wait to get the sweets. As for me, I recalled that my father’s fishing pole was missing, so I made up my mind to buy a new one for him by quitting my favorite ice cream. Thus, I saved money so that we could fish together to enjoy the company of each other. Through our joint efforts, we were not only rewarded with money but also planted a seed of hope for a better life.

Overall archers with higher heart rates had lower scores and those with lower rates, higher ones.

Given these cultural differences Yanaoka and his colleagues expected that if they ran the marshmallow test with Japanese and American kids, but they replaced marshmallows with wrapped gifts, then American kids would wait longer to open them.
A. children’s age B. cultural custom C. self-confidence D. self-belief
