Being a high school coach provides wonderful opportunities not only to seek great skill from students in sports, but also to implant(灌输)in them some valuable life lessons. Donta Green, a hardworking coach at Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has brought his school team to victory. Although part of this is the result of physical fitness and practice, an improved general attitude has also played a key role in the team’s success.
One way Green has changed his players’ behaviors is a strict no-bad-words rule. This applies to(适用于)players and coaches alike. If anyone uses bad language then they can expect to start doing push-ups. In another way, the coach is also addressing the way the high school students dress. No students are to be seen wearing trousers hanging too low and players should walk the corridors of the school in suit and tie.
This is having a positive effect on the students and their academic success, with the team grade average being 3.2. These changes are really affecting the way the players see themselves. As Keyshawn Morsillo, the team’s star player, pointed out: “He’s changed us. Everyone on the football team used to have some bad behaviors. But he has showed us the right way to be a successful man. We respect him and follow his footsteps. Really, he’s helping turn us from boys to men.”
This is influencing the general attitude for these students not only in the school, but also in the wider community, too.
“A lot of the things we do might seem like small things, but they add up to big things. There are things we do that set us apart from other programs. It’s just a lot of simple disciplines. That’s what is lacking in a lot of our young people.” pointed out Green.
While the team continues to impress it’s important to pay attention to how these small steps can inspire others. We can strengthen in our own children the importance of behaving properly.
24. Why did Donta Green try to change his players’ behaviors
A. To improve their entire quality.
B. To achieve their academic success.
C. To better their communicative skills.
D. To focus their mind on physical training.
25. What is the students’ attitude to the extra disciplines in the team
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Skeptical.
26. What do Green’s words mean in Paragraph 6
A. Some young people lack necessary disciplines.
B. All the students in his school behave very well.
C. Students’ correct daily behaviors are important.
D. A coach should set a good example for the students.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. A player is changing from a boy to a sport star.
B. A coach has brought his school team to victory.
C. A coach is teaching players valuable life lessons.
D. A football team has won the heart of community.

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met We often get the first impression of the person based on the color of the person’s skin or the manner in which he or she dresses. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviour.
Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of others to learn about their emotional states. Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face and eyes---be it fear, joy, anger, or sadness---so we can express them without ever saying a word. For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.
Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display their specific nonverbal behaviour is greatly affected by cultures and contexts. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behaviour is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for men to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. One culture may determine that snapping one’s fingers to call a waiter is acceptable; another may consider this gesture rude.
28. Why can we know a person’s feelings through our eyes
A. A person’s feelings can be reflected in his face.
B. A person’s emotions can be reflected in his eyes.
C. A person’s feelings can be reflected in his body language.
D. A person’s feelings can be reflected in his posture.
29. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE
A. Meaning can be conveyed both by words and body language.
B. We can use nonverbal communication to learn about a person’s emotional states.
C. We often get the first impression by what a person says.
D. The first impression can affect what we will do next.
30. How many reasons are mentioned in the text to show nonverbal communication is important
A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five
31. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. We can use different ways to express friendship.
B. Snapping your fingers to call a waiter is acceptable.
C. Learning a country’s culture is very important.
D. Different cultures have different meanings of nonverbal behaviour.
D
What kind of people can become scientists When a group of researchers posed that question to ninth-and 10th-graders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or “Anyone who seems interested in the field of science.”
Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I’m not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It’s easy for them to see a scientist’s work as arising from an inborn talent.
But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science. Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention to change students’ beliefs that scientific achievement depends on ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.
During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday. Intellectual(智力的)struggle stories: stories about how scientists “struggled intellectually,” such as making mistakes while addressing a scientific problem and learning from them. Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support. Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of coexisting challenges.
Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their science performance after-intervention, compared to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling more personally connected to the scientists. By recognizing a scientist’s struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize(共情)with the scientists during their own struggles.
32. Why do students fail to imagine themselves as scientists
A. They lack interest in science. B. They are short of confidence
C. They don’t have inborn talent. D. They have no ability to study science
33. What’s the purpose of the intervention
A. To introduce some inspirational stories to students.
B. To expose students to scientists’ great achievements.
C. To ensure students will become scientists in the future.
D. To clear students’ misunderstandings of scientific work.
34. The underlined word “pronounced” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to________.
A. minimal B. noticeable C. doubtful D. long-lasting
35. What can we learn from the research
A. Science ability has nothing to do with efforts.
B. Students are more motivated by achievement stories.
C. Scientists’ struggle stories can influence readers’ beliefs.
D. Low-performing students tend to feel connected to scientists.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew (宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don’t trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away. I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball,” I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
“Why won’t she just stay in with us all the time ” Nathan, my youngest son asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, “I know you’re not happy, but it’s for your own good.”
“Mom’s not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She’s just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.

【原文】W: I have returned to my hometown of Wilson Creek after an absence of 10 years. So many things have changed around here. When I left Wilson Creek, there was a small pond on the right. They have filled in this pond and built a large shopping mall there. A new post office has also been built just across from my old school.
The biggest changes have taken place in the downtown area. A European-style fountain has been built and some benches have also been added along with a grassy area and a new street cafe. My street looks just the same as it always does, but a public library has been built in the next street along. There used to be a great park there but they have cut down all the trees, which is a pity. The library now has a large green area in front of it but it’s not the same as when the park was there.
Another improvement is the number of new restaurants that have opened in Wilson Creek. A Chinese restaurant and an Italian restaurant have opened in the town center, and a Mexican restaurant has opened near my home, which is where I am going tonight.

While the team continues to impress, it’s important to pay attention to how these small steps can inspire others.

More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows.

32 Why do students fail to imagine themselves as scientists
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. B 35. C
根据文章第二段内容“Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as ‘I’m not good at science’ and ‘Even if I work hard, I will not do well.’ It’s easy for them to see a scientist’s work as arising from an inborn talent.(同样是这些学生中的许多人都很难将自己想象成科学家,理由是“我不擅长科学”和“即使我努力工作,也不会做得很好”。他们很容易将科学家的工作视为天生的才能。)”可知,这些学生认为能够成为科学家是天生的才能,“自己不擅长”或“即使努力也无法做好”这样的理由可以看作为他们缺乏自信,从而很难将自己想象成科学家。故选B项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段内容“Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention to change students’ beliefs that scientific achievement reflects ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.(教师学院、哥伦比亚大学和华盛顿大学的研究人员设计了一种干预措施,让学生了解有成就的科学家在科学努力中如何努力和克服挑战的故事,从而改变学生们认为科学成就反映的是能力而不是努力的观念。)”可知,这项干预通过让学生们了解科学家们是如何努力奋斗克服挑战的,以澄清学生对科学工作的误解。故选D项。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。分析可知,非限制性定语从句“for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories.
根据文章末尾内容“By recognizing a scientist’s struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize (共情) with the scientists during their own struggles.(通过认识科学家的奋斗,并介绍他或她在完成伟大工作时所运用的成长心态,学生们能够在科学家的奋斗过程中感同身受。)”

【答案】 Jordan nodded, “I let her out last night.” My mouth dropped open. “She was outside all night ” I was so furious, “It was freezing and she could die!” Jordan choked back his words, stunned. I grabbed my coat and rushed outside. Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes. Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and curling into a tiny ball. I picked her up, unsure whether she was alive or dead. Jordan was scared, “We need a vet! Now!”
As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologizing repeatedly. Luckily, the vet saved Meatball. Seeing her eyes open, Jordan stroked her head, all tears. Then, surprisingly, he turned to me. He apologized for what he had done. “I know you just want to keep me safe,” he murmured. I felt a lump in my throat. He rubbed Meatball’s back, “Looks like we are both going to observe the curfew. It’s for our own good.”
