M: Well, you have to be fit to play the role, but getting your body in shape isn’t the hardest part. It’s mastering all that leaping, falling, turning and rolling that’s actually the trickiest.
W: So how did you get into acting
M: I’d never considered it. I studied literature at university, but never involved in any drama clubs. After graduating, I worked for a comedy producer and it just went from there.
W: You grew up in Canada. How was that
M: Great! For my brothers, it was more about sports at weekends. I was the only one of my brothers that was interested in the cinema. But I wasn’t the sort of fan with posters all over the wall.
W: What would you have done if you hadn’t become an actor
M: My dad is a police officer; my mother and all my grandparents are doctors. Even so, neither of those jobs appeals to me. My older brother has an import-export company, and I guess I would have a job with him.
W: Thank you, Martin.

B. An English teacher.
C. A diving instructor.
19. Where did the speaker go right after university
A. To Australia.
B. To Jamaica.
C. To South Africa.
20. How do most customers know the speaker’s company
A. From magazines
B. On the Internet.
C. Through word of mouth.
【答案】18. A 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【原文】My name is Sandra. I run my own deep-sea business in the Orkney Islands. It was never my ambition to become a diving instructor. In fact, teaching was the last thing I wanted to do. I’d actually set my sights on becoming a research scientist. It was after high school, during a year off in Australia, that I first went diving. I loved it from the first. Back in Britain, I didn’t study geography or anything connected with diving at university because I’d already got a place waiting for me on a maths course. But I joined an underwater club and I trained for a qualification which allowed me to become a diving instructor. After that, I worked as a diving instructor in South Africa and then Jamaica until I’d saved up enough money to come back to Britain and I did another course —a master’s degree in Marine Resource Development. As soon as the course was over, I set up my own company. The business is called North Atlantic Diving. Some of the clients come from personal recommendations of satisfied customers, and some people respond to the advertisements in magazines. But most of the divers find us when they’re browsing on the Internet. Now, I’m really satisfied with my life and my work.

A nervous 11-year-old called Anthony showed up at Peter Mutabazi’s doorstep around 3 a.m., wearing blue sleepwear and a gray Batman blanket over his shoulders. Having been abandoned at a hospital by his adopted parents and desperately needing a place to stay for the weekend, he carried a bag holding a sweater, a pair of sneakers and not much else.
It was January 2017. Mutabazi wasn’t ready to take in more kids—he had just said goodbye to two foster(寄养的) brothers and needed time to regroup. Then he remembered what it was like to feel scared, alone and unwanted. As a boy, he fled from his home where his parents abused him and lived on the streets of Kampala, Uganda, before a stranger paid his high school tuition(学费), leading to a college scholarship and an eventual move to the US.
Within minutes of his arrival, Anthony asked Mutabazi if he could call him dad. The boy, who had been in the foster care system since he was a little kid, never left Mutabazi’s house that weekend as planned. Mutabazi adopted him and gave him his last name.
Last month, Mutabazi formally adopted two more children: brothers who had lived with him for three years. Mark, 8, is the new boss of the house while Luke, 7, is a shy boy with a sweet smile. Their family is an unconventional one—he is Black, and his adopted kids are White—but Mutabazi, 49, believes that love transcends racial differences.
Since becoming a foster father in 2016, he has hosted about three dozen kids of all races and cultures. Some of his foster children are reunited with their families, while others remain in his care. Mutabazi shares glimpses of his life as a foster dad with his 328, 000 followers on Instagram to encourage other men to be active fathers and signal that a healthy family is based on love, not skin color.
24. Why did Anthony show up at Peter Mutabazi’s doorstep
A. He hoped to help Mutabazi.
B. He begged for more sneakers.
C He fled from a hospital secretly.
D. He wanted Mutabazi to adopt him.
25. What happened to Mutabazi when he was young
A. He was abused by his brother.
B. He was brought to the US by his parents.
C. He was sponsored by a stranger for education.
D. He loved playing on the streets of Kampala, Uganda.
26. What does the underlined word “transcends” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Goes beyond.
B. Walks through.
C. Runs after.
D. Takes off.
27. What does the author want to convey in the text
A. Hard work pays off.
B. Love really makes a difference.
C. Education is a key to success.
D. The roses in her hand, the flavor in mine.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. A 27. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了Mutabazi收养无家可归的孩子,他的行为表明了爱能超越种族差异,能改变一切。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Within minutes of his arrival, Anthony asked Mutabazi if he could call him dad.(在他到达的几分钟内,Anthony问Mutabazi是否可以叫他爸爸。)”以及“Mutabazi adopted him and gave him his last name.( Mutabazi收养了他,并给他起了姓。)”可知,Anthony想让Mutabazi收养他。故选D项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As a boy, he fled from his home where his parents abused him and lived on the streets of Kampala, Uganda, before a stranger paid his high-school tuition(学费), leading to a college scholarship and an eventual move to the US.(当他还是个男孩的时候,他因为父母的虐待而离家出走,住在乌干达坎帕拉的街头,直到一个陌生人帮他交了高中学费,他获得了大学奖学金,并最终移居美国。)”可知,Mutabazi年轻时,他得到一个陌生人的资助接受教育。故选C项。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句前文“he is Black, and his adopted kids are White(他是黑人,他收养的孩子是白人)”说明,作为黑人的Mutabazi,收养的孩子都是白人,从而推知划线词句“but Mutabazi, 49, believes that love transcends racial differences.(但49岁的Mutabazi认为,爱transcends了种族差异。)”其中划线词应为“超越”的意思,与A项“超出,超越”同义。故选A项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“Mutabazi shares glimpses of his life as a foster dad with his 328, 000 followers on Instagram to encourage other men to be active fathers and signal that a healthy family is based on love, not skin color.( Mutabazi在Instagram上与他的32.8万粉丝分享了他作为养父的生活,以鼓励其他男性成为积极的父亲,并表明健康的家庭是建立在爱的基础上的,而不是肤色。)”可知,作者借Mutabazi的话表明他的观点,爱能超越种族差异,爱能改变一切,B项“爱真地能改变一切。”符合题意。故选B项。
C
Five years ago, we cut nearly every single tree across 19 acres here, piled and burned the branches and left the trunks where they lay. The goal was to restore one of the Ozarks’ rarest ecosystems, a type of dry and rocky grassland.
Logging down trees to bring back grass may seem puzzling in a time of climate change, as forest conservation and tree planting have become popular ways to keep carbon out of the atmosphere. But it is exactly what we should do in some parts of the Southeast. The climate and biodiversity crises are problems to be solved together. We can’t afford to rob biodiversity to pay for the climate. And grasslands are surprisingly good at pulling carbon out of the atmosphere. A single sunflower might not be the carbon grab that an oak tree is, but grass’s deep root systems store the element deep underground, where it can take hundreds or thousands of years to return to the atmosphere.
For the past century, the commonly held belief was that forests once covered most of the region from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River. But we now know that’s not true. Much of the Southeast was a string of large and small grassland ecosystems with enormous biodiversity. All of these unique grasslands are under threat, but not all by tree invasion. The few remaining grasslands in Arkansas are being converted to grow rice, Virginia grasslands are being flattened by housing developers, and low-lying coastal grassy plain is facing sea-level rise. Because grasslands are so easily navigated (导航) and settled, they may be the most threatened ecosystems in the world.
And it’s obvious that everywhere, grasslands remain undervalued. Many conservation organizations working in the Southeast are still focused on tree planting and preserving existing forests. The Nature Conservancy’s Cumberland Forest Project covers 253, 000 acres of land in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, part of an effort to store carbon and create continuous habitats for species migration during climate change. In fact, recent laws are beginning to lead us in the right direction.
28. Why were the trees cut down in Ozarks
A. To take in more carbon. B. To regain its grassland.
C. To create a new ecosystem. D. To deal with climate change.
29. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about
A. The reasons for grasslands reduction. B. The purpose of cutting down trees.
C. The changes of ecosystems. D. The result of tree invasion.
30. What is presented about grasslands in the Southeast
A. Grasslands are greatly valued. B. Carbon can be broken down by grasslands.
C. Forests took up more region than grasslands. D. All the grasslands are not threatened by trees.
31. What might the author continue talking about
A. The importance of grasslands. B. The influence of planting trees.
C. The measures of restoring grasslands. D. The present situation of the Southeast.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. C
【解析】

【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Much of the Southeast was a string of large and small grassland ecosystems with enormous biodiversity. All of these unique grasslands are under threat, but not all by tree invasion.(东南部的大部分地区是一系列大大小小的草原生态系统,生物多样性丰富。所有这些独特的草原都受到威胁,但并非都是树木入侵)”可知,东南地区的草原呈现的并不是所有的草原都受到树木的威胁。故选D。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Many conservation organizations working in the Southeast are still focused on tree planting and preserving existing forests. D
Sound echoing within caves may have also influenced what early humans put on rock walls. Thousands of years ago, early humans adventured deep within a cave, where sound bounced off the walls. Perhaps by either speaking or walking, they generated the sound re-mindful of a hoof. To represent this sound, they drew a hoofed animal.
They would have been using the same skills that facilitated the earlier development of language, theorizes anew study. “Our research suggests that the cognitive mechanisms (认知机制) necessary for the development of cave and rock art are likely to be similar to those employed in the expression of the symbolic thinking required for language.” says Cora Leisure, a linguist at MIT and one of the study’s authors.
Whether or not this art would have shaped how language further developed is doubtful. The study’s researchers note that language is thought to have evolved around 100,000 years ago. And the oldest forms of cave art found date back roughly 40,000 years. “We could assume that human language. emerged as an abstract symbolic system, while its expression — in the form of cave and rock art, or any other modality — may have appeared very late,” says Vitor Nobrega, a linguist at the University of Sao Paulo and author on the study.
The markings, they suggest, are external representations of internalized thought. “It’s a theory contrary to a belief among archaeologists (考古学家) that language doesn’t fossilize,” says Lesure, adding that their study doesn’t outright say the cave art they looked at equals language, only that the same cognitive functions may have been present.
Archaeologists have theorized early evidence of language can be found in objects like converted bones that may have been used for anything from counting days to taking attendance. But they are still searching for some of the first physical evidence of linguistic capabilities. The sound factor is an important one to consider, but it was not the only explanation for why people made marks in the places they did.
32. Why does the author mention early humans in paragraph 1
A. To present an idea.
B. To clarify a concept.
C. To introduce the topic.
D. To provide background information.
33. What can we know about the cave art according to the new study
A. It is identical to language.
B. It appeared later than human language.
C. It can further language development.
D. It can help identify when humans began speaking.
34. What is the archaeologists’ attitude to the origin of language
A. Uncertain.
B. Doubtful.
C. Approving
D. Indifferent.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Evolution of Ancient Language
B. A New Study of Ancient Cave Drawing
C. Ancient Cave Arts Influenced by Echoing Sound
D. Ancient Cave Drawings and Early Human Language Linked
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了古代洞穴绘画与早期人类语言的联系。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Sound echoing within caves may have also influenced what early humans put on rock walls. Thousands of years ago, early humans adventured deep within a cave, where sound bounced off the walls. Perhaps by either speaking or walking, they generated the sound re-mindful of a hoof. To represent this sound, they drew a hoofed animal.(洞穴内的回声可能也影响了早期人类在岩壁上的装饰。几千年前,早期人类在一个洞穴深处冒险,那里的声音反射在墙壁上。也许是通过说话或者走路,他们产生的声音重新铭记一只蹄子。为了表现这种声音,他们画了一只有蹄的动物)”和第二段中“They would have been using the same skills that facilitated the earlier development of language, theorizes anew study. (一项新的研究表明,他们可能使用了促进早期语言发展的相同技能)”可推知,作者在第一段中提到了早期人类是为了引出文章主题——古代洞穴绘画与早期人类语言的联系。故选C。
【33题详解】

Experiences at a Sports Meeting I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. 1won the B Division long jump and was a decent sprinter(短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meeting, A little too proud, I was so sure I would win a medal that I didn’t make enough preparations.
The Meeting lasted two days. I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 meters relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. My jump was 3. 65 meters which was not bad for me. Then there was a boy nicknamed the typhoon, who jumped over 4 meters! That was quite an accomplishment for a ten-year-old boy. We finished our jumps, and I came in the fourth place, just missing out on a medal, which I was eagerly longing for.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the8×50 meters relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a nervous minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched holding my breath as my team runners kept up with the others. I saw the baton(接力棒)passed from one runner to another. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in the second place. My turn arrived. I took the baton cleanly and began my run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner.

Paragraph 2: I sat there, wounds on my knees, lowering my head.

【答案】范文
Then disaster struck! I was trying my best to catch up when I felt my legs were weak. Hard as I tried, my legs failed me after a few more steps. I tumbled and fell. Young and flexible, I was able to quickly pick myself up and continue the race. However, the tumble cost us valuable time. I handed the baton to the next runner. Although the runners dashed with all their might, it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal.
I sat there, wounds on my knees, lowering my head. Feeling terrible for letting the team down, I thought it was the end of the world and couldn’t help sobbing. It was more being too proud than bad luck. At the end of the day, I left the Meeting empty-handed. It had been an eventful and unsatisfying day for me. Anyway, I realized the importance of making full preparations and learned we should spare no effort on everything. I am grateful for the lesson.

A nervous 11-year-old called Anthony showed up at Peter Mutabazi’s doorstep around 3 a.m. wearing blue sleepwear and a gray Batman blanket over his shoulders.

Experiences at a Sports Meeting I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. 1won the B Division long jump and was a decent sprinter(短跑运动员). As a result I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meeting, A little too proud, I was so sure I would win a medal that I didn’t make enough preparations.
