W: Well, my son will reach the adult age in five years. I think his opinion should be respected. But Anthony thinks there is no need to do so, for it’ll have a bad effect on the child.

W: I understand.
M: Or you can have a vote on the issue with your family if you really can’t decide.
W: I guess I should respect my son’s opinion and talk to him. Thanks, Leo.

18. What was the advantage of the clothes made of plastic
A. They didn’t wear out easily. B. They were easy to wash. C. They were comfortable.
19. Why were the plastic toys a good idea for some mothers
A. They were colorful. B. Kids preferred them. C. They were cheap.
20. What is talked about at the end of the speech
A. The excitement caused by plastic.
B. The harmful side of plastic.
C. Different uses of plastic.
【答案】18. B 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: This history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man-made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. It was discovered both by an Englishman and an American in the same year, but it was the American who first developed it on a large scale during the 1860s. Everybody was excited by this new material because it was cheap. Poor workers were able to buy clothes made of plastic. This kind of clothes were uncomfortable, but they were easy to wash. The poor workers could clean them every evening with just soap and water. Moreover, it was easy to dry. Poor mothers, who had not been able to afford toys for their children, were now able to buy inexpensive ones made of plastic. However, plastic has one serious disadvantage. Some kinds of plastic can catch fire very easily, and when they do, a poisonous gas is produced. What’s worse, plastic takes a very long time to break down so it causes serious pollution. We now use the term “white pollution” to refer to plastic pollution.

Matthew has retired. He used to be working in a sawmill (锯木厂). Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused his fingers to be injured and bleed all year round. Outside his job, he enjoyed watching baseball games and he was glad that he had more time for it after he retired. In Matthew’s eyes, baseball was a game including details, mental sharpness, and great patience, and he thought instructing young men needed the same abilities.
There were boys on the high school baseball team playing in the neighborhood and Matthew was their regular visitor. Whether on summer evenings under the lights or in the mid-afternoon sun, he was always the one to appear on time. In the beginning, he simply sat and watched them. After a good play, Matthew would give them a praising sign, and a mistake would earn his smile, which meant, “You’ll get another chance!” He communicated with the boys in such a way.
Gradually, the boys got used to Matthew’s presence and became familiar with him. They were curious about his tough hands. He talked about his adventures of working in the forest. They were long and inspiring stories, all about friendship, helping each other, and remaining hopeful even though experiencing hardship, and also about how a boy grew into a man.
Matthew would take time to show them some basic skills to some slow learners and took the trouble to repeat each detail until the players were skillful. What Matthew taught was deeply rooted in the boys’hearts and they could play wonderfully in the races.
Time flew. Matthew thought he was too old to teach them anything. It was time for him to leave. However, the boys told Matthew that his fighting spirit had long been part of their team. Nearly everyone on the team learned to expect a little more from themselves as long as Matthew was there.

C. It must be based on interest. D. It called for sharp movements.

A new trend called “praise groups” or “in-need-of-praise” chat groups has become popular on Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty (谦逊) is valued, openly seeking and giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive compliments (赞扬) and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well. Participants have found that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self- confidence.
For example, Meng Zha, a student at Shanghai’s Tongji University, tried the service and found it amusing and uplifting. She received compliments on her appearance and even quotes (引用) from popular songs. Ms Meng couldn’t help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her desire to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to seek and receive compliments and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. It provides a positive and uplifting experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups, see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often associated with things happening on the Internet. “At first, the purpose of this group is to make us learn to praise others and accept others’ praises confidently. Here we can drop everything, and use our heart to praise and support others, ”one member said. But the life journey is long and there are some unexpected situations that we can only count on ourselves to face when there is no one out there to offer help.
28. What is the purpose of praise groups
A. To make praise popular. B. To have everyone supported.
C. To share common interests. D. To give people hope and happiness.
29. What can we learn about Meng Zha in paragraph 3
A. She was not strong enough. B. She was under working stress.
C. She was satisfied with the service. D. She was a gifted singer in her area.
30. What does the underlined word “antidote” mean in the last paragraph
A. A way of making new friends. B. A kind of medicine.
C. A method of being confident. D. The wisdom of solving problems.

When Gayle Macdonald reached the summit (顶峰) in Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountain range earlier this year, she didn’t just stop and take in the moment. Instead, she did what a great many people would do—she looked for the best spot to take a selfie (自拍) for her social media accounts. Gayle even admitted that she moved dangerously close to the edge while doing so. It was after that moment that she decided to quit social media.
“I was like ‘this has got to stop,’ ” recalls Gayle. “Taking a photo used to be the first thing I thought about when I got out of the car. Thinking all the time about creating content and worrying about what to say, were taking up too much head space and getting me down.”
Social media can be addictive for many reasons, the main one being that it is a form of escapism, especially for the younger generation. It’s simply a way of connecting without connection, and it’s a 24/7 comfort blanket of company for many. For many of us, most of our time is spent on social media. One global study found that the average person spends 2 hours and 29 minutes per day on such apps and websites. While some people might think that this is a bad habit that they should cut down on, for others it’s an actual addiction that they need help to overcome.
Hilda Burke, a psychotherapist (心理治疗师), says there’s now more widespread awareness about how much time people are spending on social media. “This is now easily to figure up, as most phones show you the breakdown of how you’re spending your time online,” she says. “Seeing how it all adds up can serve as a powerful wake-up call.” She advises that people quitting social media should let all their friends know, so they don’t continue to try to contact you via the sites.
Burke welcomes the fact that more people are quitting social media. It’s likely that we’re eventually starting to realize the damage it can cause to our relationships, mental health and our experience of real-world moments.
32. How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By providing research results. B. By describing a process.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving an example.
33. What may Gayle think of her frequently updating posts on social media
A. Energy-consuming. B. Fashionable. C. Inspiring. D. Eye-catching.
34. Where can you find the reasons for teenagers’ addiction to social media
A. In paragraph 2. B. In paragraph 3. C. In paragraph 4. D. In paragraph 5.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Teenagers Are Addicted To Social Media
B. People Quit Using Social Media To Post Selfies
C. There Is Really More To Life Than Posting Selfies
D. Social Media Affects Physical And Mental Health

I’m glad you noticed the family photo I posted. It was taken in my hometown, where my mom has been tirelessly taking care of my sick grandma. My returning home brought great joy to my grandma, and we could see her mood brightening. Therefore, we decided to capture this perfect moment. With Grandma in her wheelchair, we took a warm family photo in the yard of our old house. It was a rare occasion as all my family gathered together for a reunion. We decided to go home more in the future to take care of Grandma and spend more time with her. To me, it wasn’t just a photo, but a treasure reflecting our strength and unity during challenging times.

Sometimes an act of kindness can mean a lot in life.
Three years ago I worked for a few weeks as a doctor in a new dental clinic (牙科诊所) at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was a rush driving to the new clinic and getting used to the clinical environment.
As it was all new to me, I took off my gold rings: my wedding ring, and one that was an anniversary (周年纪念日) gift from my husband. I put them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer. During my lunch break, I noticed the tissue and thought that it did not look very clean and threw it into the rubbish bin. I went about my work and my day went well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive. At the very first day at the clinic, I did a good job, busy but fruitful. So I felt more than proud. When it was time to get off work, I changed my clothes and went out of the clinic, thinking nothing of the ring.
Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my face burning red. I felt sick to my stomach. I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to find my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few phone numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been collected. I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my rings. It mattered much to me and now as if I lost a precious thing and my feelings were beyond words.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But about two hours later, I received an amazing phone call.

Three days later, I finally got a chance to thank the cleaner face to face.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
But about two hours later, I received an amazing phone call. The cleaner had gone through the bins and found my rings! I was so thankful to her, someone who had taken the trouble to go through the bins—which is not a pleasant task—to find my priceless ring. I worked at that clinic the following day, so I bought chocolates to thank this wonderful person. On arriving the clinic, my manager gave the ring to me. Unfortunately, I did not get to meet the cleaner as she was at work elsewhere that day.
Three days later, I finally got a chance to thank the cleaner face to face. After a tiring day, I was about to leave as usual when I met a cleaner by accident, who came to collect the bins at the clinic. With much curiosity, I quickly came up to her, and asked whether she was the cleaner who had found my rings. The cleaner, wearing dirty overalls, stood in front of me and said yes. Excited and relieved, I expressed my deep gratitude to her again and again. She just told me it was not a big deal. Finally, she left, wearing a bright smile on her face. And that smile would stay in my memory forever.
