B. It always shows the latest movies.
C. It enables him to see movies easily.

C. The cost of building a mobile cinema.
C 18. B 19. B 20. A
M: I live on an island off the west coast of Scotland. I love it but a trip to the cinema means a 55-minute boat journey plus a half-hour drive to the nearest town. That’s why we all get excited about the Screen Machine. It’s a mobile cinema that travels round the Scottish islands. Sometimes we get to see the latest movies.
You can’t miss the huge, bright blue Screen Machine when it comes into the car park. It takes an hour to change it into a comfortable, air-conditioned 80-seat cinema. It’s amazing.
I really admire the Screen Machine’s driver. Of course, he shows the movies. And there is always another person selling tickets. The salt in the sea air isn’t good for the truck’s motors so they also need a mechanic.
Ticket prices are very reasonable, so as soon as the Screen Machine arrives, the ticket office phone starts ringing. We can now also book in advance on the Screen Machine website, which makes it even more convenient. And that’s the way most people choose now. It’s an amazing service.

Faming is a tradition among many in South Dakota, one that is not always easy to keep in the family. But one family has survived four generations and hopes to continue long into the future. The year was 1933 when Ed VanderWal's father first stepped onto the farm. Now 80 years later, Ed carries the passion(热情) his father gave him for farming every day while working the fields on the family farm in Volga.
“Well, I was in the first grade when my dad moved here to this farm and I grew up on the farm. And that's what I was interested in doing more,” Ed said. But that love of working the land didn't stop with Ed. He's passed it down to his six sons. Some of them run farms of their own now, but two of them, Scott and David, still work side by side with their dad every day.
Some people might worry that working sun up to sun down with family seven days a week would lead to a few family spats(争吵). But for the VanderWals, the constant time together works just fine.
“When families work together on a farm, it's a challenge at times getting along. Everyone has to pull their weight and do their share. And that, of course, transfers from one generation to the next,” Scott said.
And while they all get along like any family, with good days and bad, it's tradition that keeps each generation teaching the next.
“But we taught them to work with animals at a young age, like most farmers do. So it's nice to be able to pass that tradition onto the next generation,” Scott said.
The youngest generation of the VanderWals, Ed's three grandsons and a granddaughter, all started learning farming techniques at a young age.
24. Why did Ed VanderWal devote himself to the farm
A. Because he grew up on the farm.
B. Because he was affected by his father.
C Because he could do nothing but work on the farm.
D. Because he wanted to set a good example for his sons.
25. What can we know from Paragraph 2
A. Managing a farm is a real challenge.
B. Ed has divided his farms into six parts.
C. Ed taught his sons how to work on farms.
D. Scott and David own their own farms now.
26. What can be inferred from the passage
A. The VariderWals have strict family rules.
B. Ed's tradition has great effect on the local.
C. Ed's grandchildren will drop out of school.
D. Ed's farms have no lack of successors (继承者).
27. What's the best title of the passage
A. A Faming Family.
B. A Successful Farmer.
C. The Agricultural 'Tradition.
D. The Agricultural Generation.
B 25. C 26. D 27. A
根据第一段最后一句“Now 80 years later, Ed carries the passion(热情) his father gave him for farming every day while working the fields on the family farm in Volga.”
根据第二段后三句“But that love of working the land didn't stop with Ed. He's passed it down to his six sons. Some of them run farms of their own now, but two of them, Scott and David, still work side by side with their dad every day.”
最后一段“The youngest generation of the VanderWals, Ed's three grandsons and a granddaughter, all started learning farming techniques at a young age.”
根据文章第一段一二句“Faming is a tradition among many in South Dakota, one that is not always easy to keep in the family. But one family has survived four generations and hopes to continue long into the future.” 故选A。
C
Wildfires have recently seriously destroyed areas across the world. Hoping to reduce harm, researchers led by Yapei Wang, a chemist at Renmin University of China, say they have developed a sensor to detect such wildfires earlier and with less effort.
Present detection methods rely heavily on human watchfulness, which can delay an effective response. The team says its new sensor can be placed near tree trunks’ bases and send a wireless signal to a nearby receiver if there is a sharp temperature increase. That heat also powers the sensor itself, with no need to replace batteries. The sudden temperature change will give off electrons (电子) to move within the liquids, creating electrical energy to send the signal.
McCarty, a geographer at Miami University says places such as San Diego—where wild land and city meet—could benefit from sensors like this. When a fire breaks out in a valley that extends to someone’s property, she says, with such a device, “as a homeowner, you will know it earlier than the fire agency.” And she adds that it is even more important to improve cooperation among the different agencies involved in firefighting.
Wang says his team’s next steps are to extend the device’s signal range beyond the present100 meters, which can limit its practical use, and to develop a protective cover for it. The sensor’s effectiveness, Wang notes, will also need to be tested in the field.
28. What can we learn about the new sensor
A. It replaces batteries itself. B. It produces response more easily.
C. It depends on human observation. D. It sends a wireless signal continuously.
29. What’s McCarty’s attitude towards the new sensor
A. Critical. B. Ambiguous. C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
30. What will probably be talked about if the passage continues
A. How people use the new sensor. B. How much the new sensor costs.
C. How the new sensor comes into effect. D. How Wang’s team better the new sensor.
31. What’s the best title for the text
A. A research into wildfires. B. A widely accepted new sensor.
C. A new senor to detect wildfires. D. Different opinions on a new sensor.
B 29. C 30. D 31. C

It’s often said that creative people see the world differently from the rest of us and a Harvard study is providing one explanation. Scientists studied brain scans of people after asking them to come up with creative uses for everyday objects. And they found a specific pattern of connectivity (连接) that correlated (与……相关) with the most creative responses.
“What this shows is that the creative brain works differently,” said Roger Beaty, the first author of the study. Beaty and his colleagues examined brain data from previous studies and found that, by simply measuring the strength of connections in these people’s brain networks, they could estimate the originality of these people’s ideas.
While the data showed that regions across the brain were involved in creative thought, Beaty said the evidence pointed to three subnetworks. And they were the default mode (默认状态) network, the salience (突出) network and the executive (管理的) control network. They appear to play key roles in creative thought. The default mode network influences memory and mental acting (心理活动), so theoretically it plays an important role in processes like mind wandering, imagination, and natural thinking. The salience network notices important information. Lastly, the executive control network works to help people keep their focus on useful ideas while getting rid of those that aren’t working. Beaty said, “People who think more flexibly and come up with more creative ideas are better able to use these networks that don’t typically work together and bring these systems online.”
Based on the results of that study, Beaty and his colleagues have achieved a lot. “We used already -published data ... we found that based on how strong the connections are in this networks, we could guess pretty accurately how creative you’re going to be on a task,” Beaty said. He added, “It’s also not clear whether this can be improved with some kind of training. Creativity is complex, and we’re only working on the surface here.”
32. What were the participants asked to do in the study
A. To tell scientists their different ways of seeing the world.
B. To show their special ways to connect with others.
C. To talk about their most exciting experiences.
D. To think of new uses of ordinary objects.
33. What does the underlined word “estimate” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Improve. B. Judge.
C. Spread. D. Praise.
34. The default mode network will influence a person when the person is ________.
A. giving up useless ideas B. organizing thoughts
C. making decisions D. brainstorming (集思广益)
35. What can we infer from Beaty’s words in the last paragraph
A. The study is very helpful in determining one’s creativity levels.
B. We can become more creative with the help of some training.
C. Enough work has been done to better understand creativity.
D. Some people can be born with higher levels of creativity.
D 33. B 34. B 35. C
根据第一段中的“Scientists studied brain scans of people after asking them to come up with creative uses for everyday objects. (科学家们在要求人们想出日常用品的创造性用途后,对他们进行了脑部扫描。)”可知,科学家在要求人们想出日常用品的创造性用途后,对他们的脑部扫描进行了研究。由此可知,此项研究的参与者被要求思考普通物体的新用途。故选D。
【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段第一句“‘What this shows is that the creative brain works differently,’ said Roger Beaty, the first author of the study. (该研究的第一作者Roger Beaty说:‘这表明,创造性大脑的工作方式不同。’)”可知,Beaty和同事们的研究表明创造性大脑的工作方式不同;结合划线单词上文“Beaty and his colleagues examined brain data from previous studies and found that, by simply measuring the strength of connections in these people’s brain networks, they could (Beaty和他的同事检查了之前研究的大脑数据,发现通过简单地测量这些人大脑网络中的连接强度,他们可以……)”
根据第三段中的“The default mode network influences memory and mental acting (心里活动), so theoretically it plays an important role in processes like mindwandering, imagination, and natural thinking. (默认模式网络影响记忆和心理行为,因此理论上它在走神、想象和自然思维等过程中起着重要作用。)”可知,默认模式网络与记忆和心理活动有关,所以理论上它在走神、想象和自然思考等过程中发挥着重要作用。由此可知,当一个人正在组织他的思维时,默认模式网络会影响他。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“‘We used already-published data ... we found that based on how strong the connections are in this networks, we could guess pretty accurately how creative you’re going to be on a task,’ Beaty said. (‘我们使用了已经公布的数据…… 我们发现,根据这个网络中连接的强度,我们可以相当准确地猜测你在一项任务中会有多大的创造力。’Beaty说。)”可知,Beaty和他的同事们发现,根据这些网络中的联系有多强,他们可以非常准确地猜测你在一项任务上的创造力。由此可推知,他们已经做了足够多的工作,能够更好理解创造力。故选C。

How to Be Creative
Most of us think that creativity is a quality belonging only to artists, writers, or dancers, rather than ourselves.___36___ The following tips are a great beginning for developing our creativity.
1.Get out of your comfort zone
We eagerly accept the familiar and fear the unknown. Break out of your usual patterns and welcome creativity into your life. As stated earlier, the human brain was designed to recognize patterns.___37___ In fact, our comfort zone is nothing more than a collection of patterns. As we become more efficient at recognizing and using patterns, we rely less on creativity to find new paths. We should force ourselves out of our comfort zones and open up new possibilities.
2.Try different things
If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got. We are creatures of habits and routines, and creativity hates routines. If you usually drive to work, take the subway for a few days.___38___ Interrupt your routine, experiment and try something new. New things are often creative, but the same old thing never is.

Having a great idea is not enough; you must work to make it a reality. Have you ever seen a new product and realized that you thought of the same thing long ago Yet someone else is making money with “your” idea.___40___ The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action. Do whatever it takes to bring your ideas to life. If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life.

本段建议付诸行动让想法成为事实,根据后面的“The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action.”

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Many libraries around the world are as amazing in their architecture and organization as they are in the huge amount of knowledge they contain. With shelves and shelves of books, various collections and amazing historical and cultural displays, there are plenty of undiscovered wonders.
Beinecke Rare Book Library (New Haven, Connecticut)
Yale University has one of the most beautiful college campuses in America, and one of its most interesting features is the Beinecke Rare Book Library. It is one of the largest buildings in the world devoted to rare books and manuscripts (手稿) of famous people. From 2015-16 the library building was closed for 18 months for major improvement. Inside there is a statue of its main founder that rises up high.
Vennesla Library (Vennesla, Norway)
Located near the southernmost tip of Norway, Vennesla Library is more than a collection of books—it’s a city cultural center and meeting place. The building hosts a coffee shop, open meeting spaces, classrooms for children and adult education courses, and a cinema. It is mainly built out of wood. The long, thin beams (横梁) on the inside were designed to look like the inside of a whale.
Suzzallo Library (Seattle)
Among the many beautiful features of the campus at the University of Washington, such as its cherry flowers and a light rail station, Suzzallo Library was built in the Collegiate Gothic style. Its buttresses (扶壁) are decorated with 18 statues featuring famous academics and writers such as Plato, Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, Galileo, Beethoven, Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
Library of Muyinga (Muyinga, Burundi)
A school for deaf children, the Library of Muyinga in Burundi was built with local techniques and traditions. A rope hammock (吊床) that hangs between the first and second floors of the library serves as part of the children’s reading room, a great place for indoor activities.

Faming is a tradition among many in South Dakota one that is not always easy to keep in the family.
C. Because he could do nothing but work on the farm.
D. Because he wanted to set a good example for his sons.
25. What can we know from Paragraph 2
A. Managing a farm is a real challenge.
B. Ed has divided his farms into six parts.
C. Ed taught his sons how to work on farms.
D. Scott and David own their own farms now.
26. What can be inferred from the passage
A. The VariderWals have strict family rules.
B. Ed's tradition has great effect on the local.
C. Ed's grandchildren will drop out of school.
D. Ed's farms have no lack of successors (继承者).
27. What's the best title of the passage
A. A Faming Family.
B. A Successful Farmer.
C. The Agricultural 'Tradition.
D. The Agricultural Generation.

D

3.___39___
Having a great idea is not enough; you must work to make it a reality. Have you ever seen a new product and realized that you thought of the same thing long ago Yet someone else is making money with “your” idea.___40___ The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action. Do whatever it takes to bring your ideas to life. If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life.
A. Take action
B. Seek several options
C. Think from the other person's point of view.
D. If you normally eat in the office, have lunch under a tree.
E. The truth is that we are all born with the capacity to be creative.
F. We continue to create patterns and routines for almost everything we do.
