As both world and Olympic champions, Chinese diving queens Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi were, unsurprisingly, among the brightest stars on the platform at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Then, after winning the women’s synchronized 10m platform gold together as partners on Saturday, the two young aces battled it out in the women’s 10m platform on Tuesday, when Quan edged out Chen to win the title by a margin (领先幅度) of just 2.55 points.
Quan and Chen are both the closest of partners and toughest of rivals. This seemingly complicated relationship, to themselves, however, is very simple. They are simply best friends that have grown up together.
“Quan is actually a very easygoing person. She is always the funniest one in our team. She always carries a smile, and she is the reason why our team always has such a great atmosphere,” said 18-year-old Chen during an exclusive interview with China Daily.
“She shines in so many ways. She has a very positive mindset (思想), and she is always energetic during training and competition. I hope she will always have the heart she has now and keeps chasing her dreams.”
“Chen is a pretty and charming girl, who never easily gives up,” said Quan.
“As athletes, we both have the desire to win. It’s a lie if we say we don’t. That is why we both work extremely hard and fight for the same goal. We never stop pushing ourselves,” said Chen. “But this is a very positive competition. Such a life, as a top national team diver, is a very special and unforgettable experience. She is the best encouragement to me, and that’s why I’m growing.”
But in Quan’s eyes, Chen is the more hardworking one of the two.“ She always tries her best at training and competition. I’m not as hardworking as she is,” Quan added.
“The Asian Games gold is just another decoration of my career, and it’s just a small test ahead of the Paris Olympics. There are still problems we need to fix,” said Chen.
“I hope my partner always has a champion’s heart to face future competitions and all of the challenges ahead.”
Quan, in her typically succinct way, added: “I wish her the same.”

When people visit their local family-owned pumpkin patch (菜地) around Halloween, they aren’t usually looking for dinner. For people who prefer seasonal recipes to decorations, that may raise a few questions: Are the pumpkins sold for jack-o’-lanterns (南瓜灯) different from pumpkins sold as food And are Halloween pumpkins any good to eat
The pumpkins available at farms and outside supermarkets during October are what most people know, but that’s just one type of pumpkin. Howden pumpkins are the most common decorative pumpkin variety. They’ve been bred (培育) specifically for carving into jack-o’-lanterns, with a symmetrical (对称的) round shape, deep orange color, and sturdy (结实的) stem that acts as a handle. They have walls that are thin enough to poke (刺) a cheap knife through and a texture (质地) that’s unappealing compared to the squashes consumers are used to eating. “Uncut carving pumpkins are safe to eat; however, it’s not the best type to use for cooking,” Daria McKelvey, a supervisor for the Kemper Center for Home Gardening at the Missouri Botanical Garden, tells Mental Floss.
If you do want to get some culinary (食物的) use out of your carving pumpkins this Halloween, set aside the seeds. Roasted with seasonings (作料) and olive oil, seeds from different pumpkin varieties become a tasty and nutritious snack. Another option is to turn the flesh of your Halloween pumpkin into purée (酱,糊,泥). Adding sugar and spices and baking it into a dessert can do a lot to mask the fruit’s flavor.
Whatever you do, make sure your pumpkin isn’t carved up already when you decide to cook with it. There are many ways to recycle your jack-o’-lanterns, but turning them into pie isn’t one of them. “If one does plan on cooking with a carving pumpkin, it should be undamaged, ” McKelvey says. “Never use one that’s been carved into a jack-o’-lantern.”
8. Why does the writer make two questions in paragraph 1
A. to look for dinner. B. to raise a few questions.
C. to make a summary. D. to introduce the topic and to arouse readers’ interest.
9. According to paragraph 2, what do we know about Howden pumpkin
A. It has a round shape, deep knife.
B. It is the most common kind of decorative pumpkin.
C. It acts as a handle.
D. It is bred specifically for carving into jack-o’-lanterns and you can never eat it.
10. If you do want to get snack out of your carving pumpkins, what would do
A. Roasted the seeds with seasonings(作料) and olive oil.
B. Poke a cheap knife through your carving pumpkins.
C. Mask the fruit’s flavor.
D. turn the flesh of your Halloween pumpkin into sugar and spices.
11. All the statements are correct EXCEPT according to the last paragraph
A. There are many ways to deal with your jack-o’-lanterns.
B. Turning your jack-o’-lanterns into pie is the only way to recycle them.
C. If one wants to cook with a carving pumpkin, it should be carved.
D. Make sure your pumpkin is cooked up already when you decide to eat it.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B

Can a small group of drones (无人机) guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year That is the very likely future of applying today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure (基础设施) worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient (高效) across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews’ efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don’t need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones of the future. They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run autonomously. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
12. What makes the application of drones to rail lines possible
A. The use of drones in checking on power lines. B. Drones’ ability to work at high altitudes.
C. The reduction of cost in designing drones. D. Drones’ reliable performance in remote areas.
13. What does “maintenance” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Personnel safety. B. Assistance from drones.
C. Inspection and repair. D. Construction of infrastructure.
14. What function is expected of the rail drones
A. To provide early warning. B. To make trains run automatically.
C. To earn profits for the crews. D. To accelerate transportation.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B. How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face
D. How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。应用今天的“空中之眼”的技术,无人机能在保证铁路安全可靠的同时又能帮助铁路运营商每年节省数十亿欧元。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points.(无人机已经被用于检查高压电线。他们完全可以做同样的事情来检查铁路线路和铁路基础设施的其他重要方面,如铁路轨道和换乘点的正确位置)”可推知,无人机在高空工作的能力使无人机应用于铁路线路成为可能。故选B。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据后文“It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. (据统计,仅欧洲铁路公司每年在铁路维护上的花费就约为200亿欧元,其中包括经常在夜间派遣维修人员检查和维修铁路基础设施)”可知,花在maintenance上的费用是用于“inspect and repair the rail infrastructure (检查和维修铁路基础设施”。由此可知“That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety”是指大幅节省检修成本和更好地保护铁路人员安全,划线词和 C项:Inspection and repair(检修)含义相近。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段 “Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.(带有先进传感器和人工智能的非常小的无人机可以像副驾驶一样在火车前面行驶。凭借它们的预见能力,它们可以发出任何问题的信号,以便快速行驶的火车能够及时做出反应)”可推知,对于无人机期待的功能是提前发现问题。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Can a small group of drones(无人机)guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year That is the very likely future of applying today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that the millions of kilometers of rail tracks and infrastructure(基础设施)worldwide are safe for trains on a24/7 basis.(一小群无人机能否在保证铁路安全可靠的同时,帮助铁路运营商每年节省数十亿欧元?

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It’s okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的)to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地)forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词)after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)!Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl, don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”

Going on singing, she walked into the park, where many people were singing and dancing. Hearing her beautiful voice, some stopped to listen to her singing and clapped for her. A grandma smiled to her and said, “Oh, little girl, you sing really well!” Emily said thanks to her. Emily felt pleased that she could sing confidently in front of strangers. The second year, the neighborhood held the singing competition again. This time, Emily walked onto the stage bravely, and her loud and beautiful voice of singing moved all the people. They all cheered for her, including those who had laughed at her. Her mother was delighted to see the timid girl became a brave one.

B Poke a cheap knife through your carving pumpkins.
C. Mask the fruit’s flavor.
D. turn the flesh of your Halloween pumpkin into sugar and spices.
11. All the statements are correct EXCEPT according to the last paragraph

It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure.

A. Personnel safety. B. Assistance from drones.
C Inspection and repair. D. Construction of infrastructure.
14. What function is expected of the rail drones
A. To provide early warning. B. To make trains run automatically.
C. To earn profits for the crews. D. To accelerate transportation.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text

注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mom’s suggestion.
