Grands Mulets hut, France
Located on the way to the Mont Blanc Mountain range, the Grands Mulets refuge offers shows topping views of the Alps. Set at an altitude of 3,051 meters, the hut was built in 1853 to serve mountaineers exploring the alpine peaks. It has 68 beds and is open from the end of March to the end of July.
Brandenburger Haus, Austria
Standing in the very heart of the largest glacier system in the Eastern Alps, Brandenburger Haus is an almost unreal sight. Visitors should be aware that it’s in the expert-only league of mountain huts as the journey to reach it goes through complicated glacier routes.
Refugio Emilio Frey, Argentina
Fairly easy to reach on a day hike, Refugio Emilio Frey is a treasure of Argentina’s superb Nahuel Huapi National Park. It’s home to one of the sharp Patagonian peaks. Overnight stays are possible as the hut accommodates up 40 guests and provides everything a mountain traveler needs.

It was hard not to notice the 8-year-old boy across the street who stormed in and out of his own house. He did it often enough that a neighbor, William Dunn, wondered what was going on in his life. So Dunn asked him. “He told me that he didn’t have a father,” said Dunn, now 58,“and I realized there might be something I could do for him.”
That something was fishing, a passion Dunn’s father had shared with him.“ Fishing always brought me peace and patience. When you’re on the water, you can forget about your problems and just appreciate the moment!” Dun n then got permission from the boy’s mother to take him fishing.
During the past 16 years, Dunn has taken groups of kids out almost every weekend to fish. Most didn’t have father figures in their lives and had never fished before. “They’d been through a lot, and their lives were difficult,” Dunn said. “But when they were fishing, all of that faded away. Out on the boat, they’d be laughing and smiling and making new friends. I knew I was on to something.”
In the beginning, Dunn spent a good chunk of his paycheck to rent boats for the kids. Then, in2018, he started the nonprofit Take a Kid Fishing Inc. He and some volunteers have introduced more than 2,500 kids most without fathers around —to the calming peace found on the water. One of those kids was Jayden Pryor, who struggled emotionally when his father died in a car accident in January, 2020.
Jayden, now 13, has become a devoted fisherman and credits Dun n with helping him mature. “I hope he knows I mean it when I say thank you,” he said.
Dunn became fatherless too as his own father passed away this past December. As a result, the fishing trips have taken on new meaning for him. “There’s nothing like feeling that first tug on the line and seeing a kid light up with a smile,” Dunn said. “I feel lucky to witness that every weekend!”
24. Why would Dunn have a chat with the 8-year-old boy
A. Because he wanted to take the boy fishing.
B. Because he learnt that the boy was fatherless.
C. Because he was confused by the boy’s behavior.
D. Because he wanted to do something for the boy.
25. What can be inferred about the kids following Dunn to fish
A. They all lead a miserable life. B. They missed their fathers very much.
C. They’re all abandoned by their fathers. D. They forget about sufferings temporarily while fishing.
26. Which words can best describe William Dunn
A. Tolerant and patient. B. Considerate and generous.
C. Responsible and creative. D. Honest and modest.
27. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Thousands of kids fell in love with fishing.

Cutting our use of fossil fuels by making energy from solar panels and wind farms is a well-known way to tackle climate change but a new study shows that soil could play a big role too.
Scientists are looking at ways to store the gas carbon dioxide (CO ) on Earth. That’s because too much of it in the atmosphere is one of the main causes of global warming. CO comes from natural sources and from human activities like burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). If there is too much of it in the Earth’s atmosphere, it can trap in the Sun’s heat, leading to climate change. The soil study was led by Jacqueline McGlade, former chief scientist at the UN Environment Programme.
McGlade says that if half of the world’s agricultural soil stored just 1% more CO , the world would almost be on track to keep to the 2015 Paris Agreement. In the Paris Agreement, most of the world’s countries promised to stop average temperatures rising above a certain point that would be bad for the planet.
McGlade says that changing farming methods will improve the health of soil and its ability to store CO . She suggests cutting the use of artificial fertilizers. These are plant foods made from fossil fuels that contain growth-boosting ingredients.
Other ways to help include ploughing less to stop soil drying out or washing into rivers, and planting cover crops. Cover crops are not harvested for food, they are grown to give the soil a break. One cover crop is clover, a plant that naturally gives the soil nitrogen a substance that helps other plants grow.
McGlade says, “Changing farming could make soils carbon-negative, making them absorb carbon and reducing the cost of farming.” She says that, in the long term, it would also boost food production.
28. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The concern of scientists. B. The harm of carbon dioxide.
C. The forming reason of climate change. D. The complexity of the Earth’s atmosphere.
29. What’s McGlade’s attitude towards artificial fertilizers
A. Supportive. B. Favorable. C. Disapproving. D. Ambiguous.
30. How does the author explain the concept of “cover crop”
A. By quoting others’ comments. B. By offering an example.
C. By listing statistics. D. By comparison.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. How to tackle climate change B. Soil could get climate on track
C. Farming is essential to climate D. How to improve the health of soil
【答案】28. C 29. C 30. B 31. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了通过改变种地方法可以促进土壤健康并吸收更多二氧化碳,进而帮助解决气候变化的问题。
【28题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Scientists are looking at ways to store the gas carbon dioxide (CO2) on Earth. That’s because too much of it in the atmosphere is one of the main causes of global warming. CO2 comes from natural sources and from human activities like burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). If there is too much of it in the Earth’s atmosphere, it can trap in the Sun’s heat, leading to climate change.( 科学家们正在寻找在地球上储存二氧化碳(CO )的方法。这是因为大气中过多的二氧化碳是导致全球变暖的主要原因之一。二氧化碳来自自然资源和人类活动,如燃烧化石燃料(煤、石油和天然气)。如果地球大气中有太多的碳,它就会吸收太阳的热量,导致气候变化。)”可知,本段主要讲的是全球气候变化的主要成因。故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“She suggests cutting the use of artificial fertilizers. These are plant foods made from fossil fuels that contain growth-boosting ingredients. (她建议减少人工肥料的使用。这些是由化石燃料制成的植物性食物,含有促进生长的成分。)”可推知,McGlade对人造化肥持反对态度。故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Cover crops are not harvested for food, they are grown to give the soil a break. One cover crop is clover, a plant that naturally gives the soil nitrogen—a substance that helps other plants grow. (覆盖作物的收获不是为了获取食物,而是为了让土壤得到休息。一种覆盖作物是三叶草,这种植物可以自然地给土壤提供氮,这是一种帮助其他植物生长的物质。)”可知,作者用三叶草的例子来解释“cover crops(覆盖作物)”这一概念,故选B。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Cutting our use of fossil fuels by making energy from solar panels and wind farms is a well-known way to tackle climate change but a new study shows that soil could play a big role too. (通过太阳能电池板和风力发电场发电来减少化石燃料的使用是应对气候变化的一种众所周知的方法,但一项新的研究表明,土壤也可能发挥重要作用。)”及全文可知,本文主要介绍的是土壤在控制气候变化方面的重要作用。所以“Soil could get climate on track(土壤可以使气候步入正轨)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选B。

When parents discover their children have lied to them for the first time, it can often come as a shock to find their children are capable of such a trick. But new research has suggested many parents may not even notice many of the lies their children tell them.
Psychologists have discovered that most parents are overconfident about their children’s honesty and this may impair their ability to discover a lie. The findings may help to explain why some parents seem to be willing to let their children get away with almost anything even in the face of evidence. They say parents suffer from a “truth bias (偏见)” with their own youngsters, but when faced with lies from other people’s children, they have less difficulty telling whether a statement is true or not.
Dr Angela Evans, a psychologist at Brock University in Canada, said, “The close relationship that parents share with their own children may lead to parents’ failing to detect their children’s lies. Parents’ truth bias may result in parents’ being less doubtful about their children, allowing the children to successfully cheat them.” Most children are thought to start lying as early as two years old but start telling more believable lies at around the age of four years old. Learning how to lie is considered as a key part of cognitive (认知的) and social development in children. But many parents are shocked when their children start lying to them. In their study, Dr Evans and her colleagues filmed 108 children aged between 8 and 16 as they performed a test after being asked not to look at the answers. They were asked afterwards if they had looked, with 50 truthfully denying looking, 49 lying about looking and 9 admitting to looking.
Videos of those denying looking were then shown to 152 parents of children aged 8 to 16, 80 of whom had children who had taken part in the test. The researchers found that the parents were less able to spot lies told by their own children than by other people’s children.
32. What does the underlined word “impair” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Show. B. Develop. C. Damage. D. Recognize.
33. Why is it difficult for parents to find their children lying to them according to Paragraph 2
A. They aren’t prepared for the lies.
B. They pretend not to discover the lies.
C. Their children know how to lie to them.
D. Their children are very good at hiding their lies.
34. What does Dr Evans find out about children’s lying
A. What makes parents lose trust in their children.
B. What causes children to tell lies to their parents.
C. What affects children’s relations with their parents.
D. What makes parents fail to detect their children’s lies.
35. What can we know from Dr Evans’ study
A. Parents tend to protect their own children.
B. Lying is a part of children’s development.
C. Children aged 8 to 16 are likely to tell lies.
D. Parents can judge lies told by children of others more easily.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. D

根据第二段第一句“Psychologists have discovered that most parents are overconfident about their children’s honesty(心理学家发现,大多数父母对孩子的诚实过于自信)”可知,心理学家发现大多数父母对他们孩子的诚实过于自信。由此可推断,这可能会损害或者削弱父母发现他们孩子说谎的能力,impair意为“削弱”,C项“damage”的含义为“损害,伤害”,含义相近,故选C项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Psychologists have discovered that most parents are overconfident about their children’s honesty and this may impair their ability to discover a lie. The findings may help to explain why some parents seem to be willing to let their children get away with almost anything even in the face of evidence.(心理学家发现,大多数父母对孩子的诚实过于自信,这可能会削弱他们发现谎言的能力。这些发现可能有助于解释为什么一些父母似乎愿意让孩子在证据面前逍遥法外)”可推断出,父母对孩子说谎的事实没有做好心理准备,故选A项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The close relationship that parents share with their own children may lead to parents’ failing to detect their children’s lies.(父母与自己孩子的亲密关系可能会导致父母无法察觉孩子的谎言)”可知,Dr Evans发现了父母不能成功识别孩子谎言的原因,故选D项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The researchers found that the parents were less able to spot lies told by their own children than by other people’s children(研究人员发现,与其他人的孩子相比,父母更难发现自己孩子说的谎言)”可知,父母判断别人的孩子说谎比判断自己的孩子说谎更容易,故选D项。

When I was little, I left Germany with my family and moved to the Netherlands. For months, my main company had been my mother or other adults. I could only speak German and hardly spoke a word of Dutch. I only met one girl who also spoke German in the neighborhood grocery store.
I was shy, so when I set off for my first day of a new school, I was really terrified. I cried leaving our apartment. I entered a classroom where there were about 20 children who looked extremely busy. Suddenly, I saw a girl with dark hair. I couldn’t see her face, as her back was turned towards me. In that moment, she turned around and looked at me. In a flash, we recognized each other. It was the girl from the corner grocery store! We instantly rushed into each other’s arms like long-separated sisters, sentences in German flowing between us. I smiled and my anxiety disappeared immediately.
“My name is Annelies. You can call me Anne,” she said smilingly. As two little girls who didn’t know Dutch, we were excited to find each other.
I was attracted by Anne immediately. Apart from being outgoing and kind, Anne was confident enough to get close to others though they spoke Dutch. Soon I also began to play with other children.
When we went home after school, Anne and I were glad to discover we were also next-door neighbors. Anne’s apartment was a floor above mine. After that, every day she came to knock at my door and then we walked to school together.
Soon we became inseparable friends and I knew more about her. She liked seeing films and her father even rented a film projector (放映机) on her birthday every year, which made her very happy. But she still felt she had difficulty integrating (融入) fully into the lives of local people.

【答案】One possible version:
With the desire to fit in, Anne and I began to learn new Dutch words and phrases. We helped and urged each other and with the help of our patient teachers, very quickly we could speak Dutch fluently. Overtime, we felt like Dutch girls and became friends with other children. Anne was particularly liked by others. One morning on our way to school, Anne pressed into my hands an envelope with my name on it. “What’s this ” I asked curiously. She smiled and asked me to open it. It was an invitation to her birthday party on Sunday.
Here came Anne’s birthday again and in our hands were many invitations. “Father’s renting a film projector again on my birthday. I would invite our class to my birthday party.” Anne said excitedly. On Anne’s birthday, I arrived and saw that the living room had been changed into a cinema, a projector standing in a back corner and the rows of chairs lined up. When other children arrived, they got excited to see all this. It was such fun watching a film together and chatting and joking around with one another. It was really an unforgettable experience.

C Responsible and creative. D. Honest and modest.
27. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Thousands of kids fell in love with fishing.
B. Fishing brings happiness to fatherless children.
C. A good neighbor becomes the father of thousands of children.
D. A nonprofit organization is established to teach kids fishing.

D

Apart from being outgoing and kind Anne was confident enough to get close to others though they spoke Dutch.
