【原文】On this graduation ceremony I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to you all. Well done, everyone. I’ve got three tips to share with you, hoping to make a direction for the future life after your graduation from college.
Tip one: There are few things that get you over your own crop more than working hard. Do you want to know how to work hard It’s not difficult. All you have to do is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you. Learn how the project you are working on fits into the big picture. Learn how you fit in. When you truly understand how the big picture works, you start being able to expect changes and change your behavior.
Tip two: Be kind to everyone. I can’t stress this enough, but it remains true. Kindness will payback invaluable rewards. Don’t you believe me I'm sure that at some point you’ll have the opportunity to work for someone who used to be your assistant, or hire someone who used to be your boss.
Tip three: Stay interested. Is there anything you can’t stop thinking about Keep doing it. Interest is the better part of success. You will be great at the things that you are willing to do.
Remember that you have time to figure out what you want to do. You have time to try again. Just have courage to do it so long as you're willing to work hard.
Questions:
11. Whom is the speech aimed at
12. Why does the speaker give the speech
13. Which of the following is NOT a tip the speaker share

Walking helps you in many ways. First it makes you heart stronger. Studies show regular walking reduces your chance of heart disease. Walking quickly for 30 minutes a day also helps control high blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of developing some cancers, too.
Want to lose weight You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat. Walking is the easiest way. As people age, their brains don’t work as well .One in14 people over 65 suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape.
Walking helps your mental health, too. Putting one foot in front of the other isn’t difficult. You don’t have to think about it, so you can concentrate on other things.
You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking near your house, park a distance away and walk. Instead of taking the elevator, walk. Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel.

M: Oh, I’m a little burned out. I’ve been surfing the Net for the last few hours.
W: Were you doing schoolwork, or was it just for pleasure.
M: Well, I wanted to get some information on South America for a project I have, but I found a really interesting chat site with people from there and started chatting.
W: Well, did you get the information you needed
M: Yes, but then we spent lots of time chatting about other interests.
W: I see. The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I have finished, I have a lot more than I started off looking for.
M: I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless.
W: Yes, there is that, and also, I often find the same site over and over again in a search. That definitely wastes lots of my time.
M: And of course, there are sites that offer little to no relevant information on the topic you are searching for. In my search today, I found quite a few sites that were nothing more than old event calendars.
W: Well, I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone.
M: I agree. With all the time I spend on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read through what I got on the Internet and start working on my subject.
W: Okay. Good luck. It’s funny we had this chat, as I was just on my way home to surf the Net myself.
M: Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight.

Birth Rates and Home Values: A Closer Look
Don’t people in expensive places always have fewer children Doesn’t _____31_____ research show a positive relationship between home value gains and higher fertility
In a recent research brief, Zillow has brought attention to the surprising continued decline of Americans’ birth rates, despite the strong economic _____32_____ since 2012. The post triggered a number of follow-up questions on social media and elsewhere. Zillow Research also published a new ______33______ at Census and Zillow data that the decisions to move and to have kids are twisted for many people.
Don’t people in expensive places always have fewer children Yes, but what the first research brief _____34_____ is not the cross-sectional correlation of birth rates and home values, but the percentage changes in each variable after the economy declines. Today, cities like New York are known as______35______for highly-educated young people who may be more likely to delay starting families.
The new finding is that counties that already had low birth rates for young adults in 2010 saw their birth rates fall further, and the degree to which they did was correlated with the degree to which their home values rose. One way to explain both these facts is that some people are _____36_____ toward very expensive housing markets requiring high-pay careers with belated or reduced childbearing, while others prefer housing markets where it is more _____37_____ to have children and buy a house big enough for the whole family. In that background, people moving to more affordable areas will have more children and those in less affordable areas will have fewer. What about prior research that shows a positive correlation between growth in home values and fertility While the ______38______ cross-sectional relationship was well-known, previous research actually showed a positive relationship between changes in home prices and birth rates. Arecent article on the subject by economists Lisa J. Dettling and Melissa S. Kearney found that a $10,000 home value increase was _____39_____ with a 0.8 percent increase in fertility. This originated from their subtler findings that non-homeowners have fewer babies in ______40______ to higher prices, while existing homeowners raise their birth rates.
Their estimates found a turning point: when homeownership is below about 32.4 percent, rising home values do, in fact, reduce birth rates. In other words, falling births reacting to rise home values would now be consistent with Dettling and Kearney’s findings.

Another bad habit which ___48___ the speed of reading is vocalization –sounding each word either ___49___ or mentally as one reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an accelerator, which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and sub-vocalization, practically ___52___. At first comprehension is ___53___ speed. A
To be honest. I’ve been missing the online shopping experience in China since I moved to the US four years ago. So when I noticed Shein becoming mainstream in the US over the past few years, I though, Great! I finally have a Taohao replacement! So I went on my first Shein journey in August 2022.
But somewhere along the way, I started questioning why I enjoy this particular kind of shopping, and also what it means for an e-commerce platform to offer endless deals.
To be fair, there are Shein purchases that I’ve really enjoyed, like a $2 nylon watchband that feels better than my original Apple Watch band. I also think people should be able to choose quantity and price over quality, because the idea of demanding that people only buy premium products feels unrealistic.
But as it turns out, I’ve finally started to see through the illusion (错觉) of Shein-like platforms. To get these occasional incredible deals, you are encouraged to shop much more than is necessary or even reasonable. This illusion has worked for a long time and for a lot of people, including me! But it’s become harder and harder to ignore the environmental consequences of my purchases, and the ways in which platforms trick people into buying more and more.
And I don’t think I’m the only one experiencing that awakening. Broadly speaking, I think society is slowly but surely shifting toward recognizing the climate impact of mass-produced cheap goods. While these conversations have yet to happen as widely and furiously in China, companies like Taobao and Shein will inevitably have to answer the question of whether their business model is sustainable for everyone—or only for themselves. So where are they beading from here There’s certainly a lot of soul-searching for the industry to do.
And I’m doing some soul-searching of my own.

The Advice Gap
Advice My Parents Gave Me: Go to college and major in what you love.
Advice I Will Give My Kids: Go to college only if you’ll major in science, engineering, or money. It’s a depressing job market, and majoring in English literature or anything with the word English in it has been useless since 1910s.
My Parents: Never show up to a party empty-handed.
Me: Never show up to a party. Send a text to the host twenty minutes before the party starts to say that you’re “sooooooo sorry” to cancel but your stomach is feeling “weird”.
My Parents: To find a job, walk into the offices of ABC News’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” and ask for one.
Me: Apply to jobs via LinkedIn, Zip-Recruiter, or your connections. Write a cover letter and attach your résumé, then manually enter the same information through the company’s portal, which looks as though it were designed in Microsoft Paint. Do this twenty times a day for two years, and you’re bound to make it to a third round of phone interviews before getting ghosted.
My Parents: Learn the difference between a 401(k) (an employer-sponsored defined-contribution pension account) and a Roth I. R. A. (a special retirement account) so that you can start investing early.
Me: Learn the difference between a 401(k) and a Roth I. R. A. so that you can explain it to me.
My Parents: Never wait to do your taxes.
Me: If you wait long enough to do your taxes, there might be a global crisis that forces the federal government to extend the deadline: Then you can wait some more and do them right before the new deadline.
My Parents: Work hard so you can save for retirement.
Me: Retirement is something you’ll read about in your history books under the title “Abstract Ideas”.
My Parents: When we’re gone, look after your siblings and never fight with them over money!
Me: When I’m gone, clear my browser history. Don’t quarrel with your siblings over who gets my monthly ten-cent payments from Medium (an American online publishing platform).

Since teenage friendships are often a never-ending revolving door of gossip between peers, what can be said about high school friendships How long can they last outside of high school And how does one affect an individual
Growing up with movies such as “High School Musical” and “Grease”, which portrayed the ideal high school friendships, we sometimes have the expectation of having a perfect relationship, staying in contact after graduation, possibly even graduating from college together and becoming lifelong friends.
Chances are you may experience genuine and pare friendships but still encounter failed ones, so high school is a time to think about what kind of people you do and do not want in your life. Although most adults see high school drama as silly, teenagers can be in the “this is the end of the world” mindset when it comes to minor inconvenience. Most teens have not realized the big question when dealing with high school problems: In five years, will this still matter It is hard to look at the big picture when the problems are in front of you, which is understandable. However, most teens need a moment to weigh and question if the problem matters in the long run.
“In the end, the friends who are inclusive and only want to see you happy and successful are the ones that really matter. Those people have helped me grow as a person. Drama is drama, and there’s no way to get around it, but if you focus on those positive people, you are sure to live a happy life socially and individually,” Karen Hart said.
As time goes on, the fiends you were in contact with after high school slowly dwindle. People embark on different pathways and go different directions. Briana Lopez, Class of 2008 graduate and current substitute teacher, said, “I am currently in contact with two high school friends. I think the friendship experiences I had in high school shaped who I am because I learned to be open-minded and be friend all kinds of people. I learned to see people for who they are, not what they wear or who they hang out with. I learned most of all how to be a good friend.”
High school is a small percentage of your life, but it has a huge impact on who you will become and where you will go. Friendships and relationships help mold who you are, be they good or bad. Lessons are brought, and lessons are learned. If you are currently dealing amongst high school drama, ask yourself: In five years, will this really matter

What time do schools typically start It depends on where they are. Some schools start early — at 7 a.m. in Brazil. In France, schools start at 8. In Australia, schools open their doors an hour later, at 9 a.m. In the U.S., schedules vary, but many opening school bells ring before 8.
So is an earlier or a later start time better For years, this has been debated. ____67____ They have long said that asking teens to show up to class before 8:00 a.m. isn’t good for their health or their report cards.
In recent years, 70 districts across the U.S. have also changed their hours. Supporters of this idea expect that more school districts will follow. One reason for the later start times is that people have mostly stopped debating the science that supports it.
In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement regarding school start times. Starting later isn’t the cure for all teen health and academic problems, the AAP said. ____68____ “Essentially, across the board, any area that you look at improves pretty dramatically” with later school start times, said an expert. In fact, research from countries around the world confirms that adolescents who get enough sleep are healthier overall. They also do better in school.
So why don’t teens — who need about nine hours of sleep each night — just go to bed earlier Researcher Paul Kelley from the University of Oxford in England says that adolescents experience a change in their biological clocks. ____69____ Teens are also wired to wake up later in the morning. Therefore, Kelley says, early wake times can cause teens to be short on sleep.
So why don’t all high schools start later The obstacles are often financial. In the U.S., public schools in St. Paul, Minnesota, delayed the adoption of later start times for all its high school students because of transportation issues. It would have cost St. Paul about $8 million to buy the additional buses needed, explained Jackie Statum Allen, assistant director for strategic planning and police. ____70____
A. But it can improve students’ lives in many ways.
B. Many are concerned that a later school day will cause problems.
C. Now, more U.S. school districts are beginning to take the advice of scientists.
D. As a result, they naturally fall asleep later at night than many parents would like.
E. It would be much better to put that money into the classroom rather than the gas tank.
F. Schools put a plan in place for a later start time after the district listened to parent feedback.

根据上文“So is an earlier or a later start time better For years, this has been debated.(那么,是早一点出发好还是晚一点出发好?多年来,人们一直在争论这个问题)”以及后文“They have long said that asking teens to show up to class before 8:00 a.m. isn’t good for their health or their report cards.(他们一直说,要求青少年在早上8点前上课对他们的健康和成绩单都没有好处)”可知,此处应该会提到一些人的观点。故C选项“现在,越来越多的美国学区开始采纳科学家的建议。”符合语境,空后的They指代 C选项中的scientists,箜后这句话即是科学家的观点。故选C。
【68题详解】
根据上文“In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement regarding school start times. Starting later isn’t the cure for all teen health and academic problems, the AAP said.(2014年,美国儿科学会发布了一份关于学校上课时间的声明。美国儿科学会表示,推迟上学并不能解决所有青少年的健康和学业问题)”以及后文““Essentially, across the board, any area that you look at improves pretty dramatically” with later school start times, said an expert. In fact, research from countries around the world confirms that adolescents who get enough sleep are healthier overall. They also do better in school.(一位专家说:“从本质上讲,随着学校上课时间的推迟,你所看到的任何领域都有了相当显著的改善。”事实上,来自世界各国的研究证实,睡眠充足的青少年总体上更健康。他们在学校的表现也更好)”可知,上文提到“推迟上学并不能解决所有青少年的健康和学业问题”,后文则提到推迟上课时间让青少年总体上更健康,他们在学校的表现也更好,说明推迟上课时间可以在很多方面改善学生的生活。故A选项“但它可以在很多方面改善学生的生活”符合语境,故选A。

Therefore, Kelley says, early wake times can cause teens to be short on sleep.(青少年早上起床也很晚。

IV. Summary Writing
71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
It is a common sight on campus or in the streets: a young person rides by on an electric scooter, traveling quickly and proudly. But Beijing’s traffic authorities have said that starting on Sept.5, people who are caught riding electric scooters on public roads or bicycle lanes will be fined 10 yuan. They will also be given a warning not to use the vehicles on public roads again.
The announcement was made after traffic police in Shanghai started a campaign to get electric scooters off public roads, with police officers stopping riders because the scooters could cause traffic problems.
The Beijing Consumer Association said it had tested more than 20 electric scooters of different brands recently and found that most had substandard brakes. It added that 16 of the tested scooters could go faster than the maximum 20 km per hour set for electric bikes. According to the traffic police, people who ride electric scooters at certain speeds can easily bump into the vehicles in the vehicle lane and hurt people who walk in the bicycle lanes.
But seeing the benefits that electric scooters have brought to young people, experts are worried that the ban may take effect slowly.
Electric scooters are a great answer to the ‘last mile problem’ of getting from a public transport station to one’s home. They’re light enough to throw over your shoulder. They’re easy to ride just about anywhere and don’t need a lot of physical effort. The scooter can travel 25 km on one charge. It’s convenient and easy to control.
They are also good for environment. Unlike cars and buses, electric scooters produce no carbon dioxide, need no fuel and make almost no noise.
For many young people, they use them to copy cool celebrities they have seen in videos.

III. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines; a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job advancing, the ability to read and comprehend ___41___ can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are ___42___ readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never ___43___ them. The main shortage lies in the actual stuff of language itself – words. Taken individually, words have little___44___ until they are combined together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, ___45___, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He read one word at a time with difficulty, often regressing to ___46___ words or passages. Regression, namely, the tendency to look back over what you have just read, is a common ___47___ habit in reading. Another bad habit which ___48___ the speed of reading is vocalization –sounding each word either ___49___ or mentally as one reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an accelerator, which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set a slightly ___50___ rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “___51___” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and sub-vocalization, practically ___52___. At first comprehension is ___53___ speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skill ___54___ improved after some training. Take Charles Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute before the training, now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute. He is delighted that now he can go through a lot more reading material in a(n) ___55___ period of time.

57. What does the underlined word “premium” mean in the third paragraph
A. High-quantity. B. Expensive.
C. High-quality. D. Original.

A. They get incredible products on sale.
B. They often buy much more than what they need.
C. They ignore the environmental impacts.
D. They are tricked into buying more and more reasonable products.
59. What is a consequence of endless deals in e-commerce platforms
A. Environmental harm. B. Price reduction.
C. Energy shortage. D. Worldwide starvation.

63. The author mentioned “High School Musical” and “Grease” in paragraph 2 mainly to show ________.
A. high school relationships are not ideally portrayed

A. Ask herself: “In five years, is it a big deal ”
B. Feel worried about “this is the end of the world”.
C. Treat failed friendships equally as genuine ones.
D. Pay close attention to the problem facing her.
65. The underlined word “dwindle” (Line 1, Paragraph 5) is closest in meaning to ________.
A. become greater, more serious or more extreme
B. improve something and make it more successful

D. decrease in size, amount value, or degree
66. According to the passage, how do high school friendships impact an individual
A Exclusive friends help one grow and live a pleasant life.

Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
D. As a result they naturally fall asleep later at night than many parents would like.
E. It would be much better to put that money into the classroom rather than the gas tank.
F. Schools put a plan in place for a later start time after the district listened to parent feedback.
