Give a talk to the class
Hello, everyone! Now I am pleased to talk about Nicholas Winton, a respected figure of mine, who is well-known as “The British Schindler” across the world.
Nicholas Winton was known for organising the rescue of 669 children from death at the hands of Nazis. In 1938, he was invited by a friend to Prague to help transport children living in terrible conditions to safety in Britain. Also, he used money to pay required money for their living expenses. In 1954, he left the military and then worked for international charities and various companies. However, Mr Winton didn’t mention the saved children.
Sir Winton kept his entire plan completely secret, even his wife had no idea about his planning until fifty years later. The story became known to the public in 1988 when it featured on That's Life, a BBC TV programme. Sir Winton's extraordinary achievement, kindess as well as modesty made him recieve the Order of the White Lion in 2014.

A short biography of Tu Youyou
Tu youyou, a famous female chemist and scientist, was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1930. At the age of 21, she was admitted into Beijing Medical College, majoring in making medicine. After graduation in 1955, she has been working in China Academy of Chinese Medical Science. In 1969, Miss Tuo worked as the leader of a research team aiming to discover a treatment for malaria. Three years later, she succeeded inextracting Qinghaosu from a Chinese herb to cure those patients of malaria.
A New Drug Certificate for Qinghaosu was issued by the Ministry of Health of China in 1986. To our excitement, Mrs Tuo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering a novel therapy against malaria in 2015.
In fact, after she made countless attempts, she finally made it with determination. What impresses me most is her persistence and strong will.
Language appreciation
1. These are among the 699 children, most of them Jewish, that Nicholas Winton will go on to save from death at the hands of the Nazis.
[句式分析] “most of them Jewish”是省略句结构,其完整形式为“and most of them are Jewish ”, “ that Nicholas Winton will go on to save from death at the hands of the Nazis.”
Language appreciation
2. On leaving school, Winton worked in banks in Germany and Fance.
[句式分析] “On leaving school”在句中作“时间状语”, 意为“一
毕业,就...”;结构on doing sth,表示“一.....就...”, 相当于连词“as
soon as ...”引导的时间状语从句。
[尝试翻译] 一毕业,温顿就德国和法国的银行工作。
