One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when
he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off
the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He
was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had
watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing
he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low,
which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug
out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches(树枝) on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he
could.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and
returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to
find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Having been stuck in the snow for
two days, Nicholas was saved.
Had it not been for TV, Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm. He had often watched Grylls’
survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’
amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard
Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
24. What caused Nicholas to get lost at the mountain
A. Having no guides to help. B. Forgetting the way back.
C. Terrible weather. D. Poor eyesight.
25. How did Nicholas keep himself warm
A. He built a snow cave. B. He found a shelter.
C. He kept on skiing. D. He made a fire.
26. Why was Grylls’ show mentioned

Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who join book groups. They choose books to read and
then meet to discuss them. Now, the website Book changes the traditional idea of a book group.
People can go on the website and register the books they own and would like to share. Book Crossing gives
each book an identification number (识别码). Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will
have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.
Bruce Pederson, the managing director of Book Crossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the
people you meet and books you read. Book Crossing combines(结合) both.”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book
will go to the site and write down where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a diary entry sharing what they thought of it. Emails are then sent to the
BookCrossers to let them know about the latest adventurous journey of their books. Bruce Pederson says the idea is
for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to collect dust on a bookshelf at home.
Book Crossing is part of a trend (趋势) among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual
(虚拟).The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty—five countries.

A. To explain what they are. B. To introduce Book Crossing.

A. Keep it safe in his bookcase. B. Mail it back to its owner.

30. What is the purpose of creating Bookcrossing
A. To protect the environment B. To encourage people to enjoy reading
C. To make good use of books D. To call on people to return to paper books
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Online Reading: A Virtual Tour B. Electronic Books: A New Trend

Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple
tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, has very high levels of
antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists
believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally
only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by
changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO(转基因食品). After changing the gene(基
因) of tomatoes, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and
other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were given the
purple tomatoes as food lived about 30% longer than those eating normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news,

experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments
about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers.
Many people were frightened by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the
effects of GMO foods on the environment. However, scientists are not agreed with these views.
Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created
over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved(批准) the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has
approved a GMO plant designed to improve human health.
32. What makes purple tomatoes really special
A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious taste.

33. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed.
34. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. The environment affects GMO foods.
B. The customers do not like GMO foods.
C. GMO products are used to help farmers.
D. Scientists think GMO products are safe.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained(抱怨) about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He
would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew(宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I
pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don't trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, shut the door and walked away. I
sighed(叹气). How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly
stepped on our pet: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball, " I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked
back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she
sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
“Why won't she just stay in with us all the time ” Nathan, my youngest son asked.

I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered(嘟哝的说) from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could
come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death in such cold weather. She looked at me and meowed
again. I patted her head, “I know you're not happy, but it's for your own good.”
“Mom's not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She's just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen
meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn't find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.

Dear Peter,
I am so glad to hear from you. Learning that you are going to visit China, I strongly recommend you have a trip to Beijing.
As the capital of China, Beijing is famous for it’s beautiful scene and cultural inheritance such as the Great Wall, and the Summer Palace. There is a famous saying, “He who cannot surmount the Great Wall is not a true man”. The Summer Palace is a wonderful place all the time, which has its special characteristics in every season.
You should keep in mind when traveling in Beijing: firstly, buy a map, and get familiar with the city and streets; secondly, call the police in emergency.
Wish you a nice trip!
Yours,

参考范文:
Jordan nodded, “I let her out last night.” My mouth dropped open. “She was outside all night ” I was so angry, “It was freezing and she could die!” Jordan choked back his words, stunned. I grabbed my coat and rushed outside. Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes. Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and curling into a tiny ball. I picked her up, unsure whether she was alive or dead. Jordan was scared, “We need a vet! Now!” (75 words)
As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologizing repeatedly. Luckily, the vet saved Meatball. Seeing her eyes open, Jordan hold her in his arms, all tears. Then, surprisingly, he turned to me. He apologized for what he had done. “I know you just want to keep me safe,” he murmured. I felt a lump in my throat. He rubbed Meatball’s back, “Looks like we are both going to observe the curfew. It’s for our own good.” (75 words)

M: I live on an island off the west coast of Scotland. I love it here but a trip to the cinema means a 55-minute boat journey plus a half-hour drive to the nearest town. That’s why we all get so excited about the Screen Machine. It’s a mobile cinema that travels around the Scottish islands, and sometimes we get to see the latest movies. You can’t miss the huge, bright blue Screen Machine when it comes into the car park. It takes an hour for it to change into a comfortable, air-conditioned 80-seat cinema. It’s amazing. I really admire the Screen Machine’s driver. Of course, he operates the film. And there is always another person selling tickets. They need a mechanic, too. Ticket prices are very reasonable, so as you can imagine, as soon as the Screen Machine arrives, the ticket office phone starts ringing. We can now also book in advance on the Screen Machine website, which makes it even more convenient. And that’s the way most people choose now. It’s an amazing service and much better than a long journey across the sea to the cinema.
