With a car’s horn beeping, Jim’s friends Tara and Bryan jumped out of the car. “How did you do ” Tara asked eagerly. “Terrible!” Jim replied in a down tone, still trying to figure out how the opposing team scored the game — winning goal just seconds before the end of the game. Bryan patted Jim’s shoulder asking, “Is winning the game the only reason why you play soccer and what really matters when playing a game ” Hearing this, Jim didn’t want to go home but decided to follow his friends and watch their game.
There came the turn for Tara and Bryan’s team to play the game. Jim watched with full attention as Tara’s team played fiercely against their opposing team. What impressed him most was that all the players in Tara’s team cooperated perfectly with unwavering resolve on their faces. Even when they were in a tie with the opponent, they stayed positive and confident. It dawned on Jim that success doesn’t always depend on the end result, but rather on how we face adversity and grow from it.西安国际港务区2023-2024学年高一上学期12月学科评价模拟

It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait ”
In the summer of 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, a messy homeless man was often shouting on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night. Peterson, 28, would pass the guy on his way to his job as a car designer at Kia Motors. but they never spoke.
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man. Inspired by the book’s sympathetic message. Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
In that first conversation, Peterson learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris. He’d moved to Southern California from Kentucky to pursue a career in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up living on the street for more than a decade.
“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later on the podcast (播客) Top Artist. “I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year, had overgrown fingernails, and probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.” And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, be found himself asking if he could paint Faris’s portrait. Faris said yes.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led to the creation of Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization that befriends and paints portraits of unhoused community members. Using a black-and-white photo taken with his phone, Peterson selects colors based on the subject’s personality and story, resulting in powerful portraits. He sells the large paintings, signed by both the subject and artist, for a few thousand dollars. Half of the profits go into a “love account” for the models. helping them start again. Faris used his portrait funds to fulfill his musical dreams by recording an album.

It is calculated that some of the world’s 7,000 languages are in danger of getting extinct. “For example, Ainu, a language in Japan, is now seriously threatened, with only 10 native speakers remaining,“ said lead study author Tatsuya Amano at the University of Cambridge in England.
The scientists found that 25 percent of the world’s languages are threatened(威胁).After identifying where the endangered(濒危的)languages were, they looked for any environmental and social or economic factors those languages might have in common, such as poor areas or rapid population growth. “We find that at the global scale, language speaker declines are strongly linked to economic growth-that is, declines are particularly occurring in economically developed regions,” said Amano.
“One important finding of this new study is that languages in the tropics and Himalayan region are likely to be increasingly threatened in the near future, because these regions still have many local languages with a small number of speakers, and at the same time are experiencing rapid economic growth,” said Amano.
Economic growth may endanger languages for a variety of reasons. For instance, speakers of endangered languages may view another more popular language as offering economic opportunities, and thus abandon their own languages. “There are other important factors that might endanger languages,” said the researchers. For instance, policies regarding how languages are used and taught in schools can be very different among countries and even within each country, and these factors may explain more detailed patterns in language endangerment.
Amano suggested it could be possible to forecast(预见)future threats to the diversity(多样化) of languages. “There exists detailed information on future changes in the environment, economies and climates(气候),”Amano said. “Using such information, together with the findings of this study and further analysis, we would like to understand what will happen to the world’s languages, where it will happen and which languages will be threatened in particular.”
28.What can we know about Ainu
A.It has changed little over the years.
B.It threatens Japanese language.
C.It is a local language in Japan.
D.It is put under protection.
29.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.What should be taught in schools.
B.What might endanger a language.
C.How economic growth is achieved.
D.How a language becomes popular.
30.What does Amano mean in the last paragraph
A.We must take action to save the environment.
B.More and more languages will get missing.
C.It will be easier to learn language changes.
D.Factors threatening languages will double.
31.What can be known from the study
A.Over 7,000 languages have been threatened.
B.Local language must be spoken in every school.
C.It is possible to use only one language worldwide.
D.The number of tropics’ local language speakers may become smaller in the future.

Coral reefs in Florida have lost an estimated 90% of their corals in the last 40 years. This summer, a marine heat wave hit Florida’s coral reefs. The record high temperatures created an extremely stressful environment for the coral reefs, which are currently also experiencing intense coral bleaching (白化).
A coral is an animal, which has a symbiotic relationship with a microscopic algae (藻类). The algae gets energy from the sun and shares it with the coral internally. The coral builds a rock-like structure, which makes up most of the reef, providing homes and food for many organisms that live there. Coral bleaching is when the symbiotic relationship breaks down. Without the algae, the corals appear white because the rock skeleton becomes visible. If the bleaching continues for an extended period, the corals can starve to death without the energy.
Florida is on the front lines of climate change. It is also on the cutting edge of restoration science. Many labs, institutions and other organizations are working nonstop to protect and maintain the coral reefs. This includes efforts to understand what is troubling the reef, from disease outbreaks to coastal development impacts. It also includes harvesting coral spawn (卵), or growing and planting coral parts. Scientists moved many coral nurseries into deeper water and shore-based facilities during this marine heat wave. They are digging into the DNA of the coral to discover which species will survive best in future.
There are some bright spots in the story, however. Some corals have recovered from the bleaching, and many did not bleach at all. In addition, researchers recorded coral spawning. Although it’s not clear yet whether the larvae (幼虫) will be successful in the wild, it’s a sign of recovery potential. If the baby corals survive, they will be able to regrow the reef. They just have to avoid one big boss: human-induced climate change.
32.What does the underlined word “symbiotic” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Reliable. B.Opposite. C.Harmonious. D.Contradictory.
33.What caused the coral bleaching
A.The rock skeleton. B.The microscopic algae.
C.The high temperatures. D.The symbiotic relationship.
34.Which is not the efforts scientists made to help coral reefs
A.Transferring coral nurseries. B.Growing and planting coral spawn.
C.Researching the DNA of the coral. D.Figuring out the reasons for problems.
35.Which of the following best describes the impact of scientists’ efforts
A.Identifiable. B.Predictable. C.Far-reaching. D.Effective.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Getting negative feedback never feels good. In fact, it pretty much always sucks. Even though it feels bad, constructive feedback is meant to help us grow and improve. Here are some strategies that can help you use negative feedback constructively, leading to positive change.
36 Your instinct may be to get upset or justify yourself instantly, but it’s important to remain as professional as possible in the moment. Even when your criticizer is factually wrong, the response “You’re wrong!” won’t ever be helpful. The key is to listen without planning your reply. Simply nod until the other person has completely finished.
Recognize the good intentions. Remember, the people who will give you tough feedback are the people who really care about your success. People who tell you only what they know you want to hear don’t really care about you. 37
Don’t let it harm your confidence. Whatever you do, don’t allow negative feedback to destroy your self-esteem. 38 Whatever went wrong won’t define you forever if you apply the feedback constructively and use it to your advantage.
Practice self-affirmation. 39 It can be helpful to remind yourself of other aspects of your identity that are not in question to boost your confidence. For example, you could say: “Yes, my team thinks I’m a micromanager, but I can work on that, I am also a nice partner, committed volunteer and talented singer.’’
Set actionable goals. It can be helpful to break down the feedback into specific, actionable goals. 40 Set time to outline an action plan and timeline for each of these goals. With this, you can keep track of your progress and hold yourself accountable to your goals.
Though negative feedback may be disheartening, take the necessary steps to become an even better version of yourself.
A.Avoid reacting defensively.
B.Don’t take the feedback personally.
C.These can feel easier to work with and give you direction.
D.You don’t have to apply every piece of feedback you receive.
E.Negative feedback can sometimes make you feel like a failure.
F.It’s almost impossible to consistently do everything right all the time.
G.So instead of reacting negatively, thank those caring about you to give you honest feedback.

Jim stared at the ground and sighed in disappointment. Players from the opposing team raced past Jim, celebrating their shocking victory. They’d scored the game-winning goal just seconds before the end of the game.
“Just one word to describe a loss like that,” Jim mumbled to his teammate Devin.
“Terrible!” Devin sighed. “It was a tough one.” He trotted (小步快跑) toward the middle of the field to shake hands with the winning team. Jim walked slowly behind Devin. He unhappily slapped hands with the winners, then stopped to shut his eyes as the autumn air cooled his sweaty face.
“Terrible,” he repeated to himself as he sat on the bench and pulled his jacket on. “Let’s get some hot chocolate and watch the next game,” Devin said. There were eight teams in the YMCA league, so games would go on all morning. “Sorry. I’m heading home,” Jim said, “I’ve had enough soccer for today.”
As he reached the gate, Jim glanced back to see the next two teams take the field. They were jumping and shouting, excited to play. “That was us a little while ago, before we were discouraged.” Jim thought.
So why we lost the game at last Jim asked himself. How did such a well-played game end up with such a terrible result It was still clear in his head: Jim had the ball deep on the Jets’ side of the field, looking for Devin or another teammate to pass to. His team had outplayed the Jets for most of the game, but failed within the last seconds.
Jim let out a deep breath. The morning was growing warmer. Perfect for soccer. Jim looked back toward the field. He couldn’t see it, but he could hear the excited voices as the game continued.
