Summertime, i.e. vacation season, is quickly approaching. And whether your ideal getaway is R&R on the beach, outdoor adventuring, or exploring a new city, it pays to plan.
I’d love to get away. How do I save for a vacation
You’re not alone. One study says 71% of Americans are planning to take a trip for leisure in 2022. And they’re planning on spending 29% more than they did pre-pandemic in 2019. But you don’t have to go broke (身无分文) to get a break. Before you even start planning your travel, here’s how to make the trip you’ve been waiting for a reality.
● Make a sinking fund. These funds are where you set aside money with an intention to spend it on a big goal.
● Timing is everything. Research the cheapest places to go when the temperature rises, and plan accordingly. You’ll also get more bang for your buck by checking out destinations with a favorable exchange rate. For somewhere further east, your dollars will go far in Thailand or the Philippines.
● Book smart. Renting a home is often a better deal than booking a hotel. Not only will you save on the price tag, but you can cook instead of eating out for every meal.
How do I keep saving while I’m on vacation
True story: travel doesn’t feel like real life, so it’s easier to splurge (挥霍). And if you’re visiting a popular tourist location, everything costs more. Here’s how to see the sights without losing sight of your budget.
● Set a daily spending limit and track what you buy to avoid overdoing it. Using cash or a prepaid debit card instead of a credit card can also help.
● Food is a money vampire. If you have access to a kitchen where you’re staying, make breakfast, pack lunch, and cook dinner when you can. If not, hit up a supermarket or farmer’s market for an easy, cheap breakfast. And when you do eat out, go for lunch or appetizers, where the menu items tend to be less expensive.
1. According to the passage, which of the following may help make your dream trip a reality
A. Preparing enough fast food. B. Borrowing money from friends.
C. Researching the cheapest places to go. D. Carrying credit cards from different banks.
2. To keep saving while on vacation, you’d better ________.
A. go out for meals B. avoid using cash
C. set a daily spending limit D. visit popular tourist locations
3. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To help travellers save money. B. To report some survey results.
C. To advertise some tourist attractions. D. To compare different travel plans.

Song Lam, or Waiata to some of her New Zealand Maori friends, argues that Mandarin and Maori have much in common, particularly the five vowels(元音) which sound the same in both languages. And the mythological(神话) figure Maui of Maori legend has a Chinese “twin brother”, the Monkey King. Both could turn themselves into any shape or figure at any time.
Some academics claim that one of the native tribes in Taiwan, China speaks a language similar to Maori, notably in the naming of numbers. Evidence gleaned by archaeologists(考古学家) shows an ancient link between the peoples of Australasia and Taiwan, with the native language of Taiwan having similarities to the prehistoric Australasian language.
Confused by Maori place names and customs when she first moved to New Zealand, Song Lam spent eight years researching and three years writing her book, The Maori of New Zealand, which is believed to be the first Chinese-language publication to include Maori words, values and customs. The 120-page book, including 10 pages of photos and maps, descbribes Maori legends, traditions, history and folk tales.
Song Lam was inspired to write the book in 1990 when she tried to sign up for an education course in New Zealand and was asked for her comments on a local historical event, which she knew nothing about. She involved her two sons in her project and research after explaining to them the stories behind Maori place names. The younger boy, aged 10, used his skill at drawing to contribute an historic map of Maori tribes in New Zealand.
“Both Chinese and Maori like to present a gift when visiting others or receiving warm reception,” Lam says. “My book will be a good gift when I visit a Maori community.”
4. According to Song Lam, what do Mandarin and Maori have in common
A. Fairy tales of the same character. B. Confusing place names and customs.
C. Similar pronunciation of vowels. D. The magic power of the Monkey King.
5. What does the underlined word “gleaned” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Controlled. B. Gathered.
C. Grown. D. Switched.
6. Why is Song Lam’s younger son mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To tell his curiosity about Maori.
B. To prove his unique talent in painting.
C. To stress the importance of education.
D. To show his help with the publication.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Cultures Share Language Bond
B. The First Book about Maori
C. Adaptation to Life in New Zealand
D. Languages Bridge Misunderstanding
C
Have you ever imagined that your simple T-shirt could cool you down by up to 5℃ on these hot summer days Thanks to a recent discovery, the possibility is getting closer. While there are many alternatives that manage to keep the body warm, this amazing invention aims to offer real relief for those who are eager to feel comfortable and fresh in the outdoors on extremely hot days.
Its inventors, engineers Ma Yaoguang of Zhejiang University and Tao Guangming of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, took a completely innovative approach. They designed a special textile (纺织物) that can absorb body heat and reemit (重发出) its energy into space as mid-infrared radiation (MIR). This textile cools both the objects and their surroundings through a technique that is known as radiative cooling. Science reveals. This means that even when it looks like you are wearing a regular shirt, you are actually wearing a device that works like a mirror.
Research conducted at Stanford University in 2017 had already managed to cool the wearer by 3℃, but this previous trial was limited. So researchers still need to test the new approach to determine how effectively the new fabric cools while the wearers are standing or walking, and not directly facing the sky, like in their trials. They also need to examine and measure how well it works when T-shirts are no in close contact with the skin.
Inventors Yaoguang and Guangming are now looking out for textile manufacturers and clothing brands that are interested in using their fabric. They estimate that the new material will increase clothing manufacturing costs by just 10 percent. “We can make it with mass production, which means everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same as their old stuff,” Yaoguang said.
So if you are an athlete or simply someone that has to deal with the extremely high temperatures, be patient because your days of feeling hot and bothered may be coming to an end!
8. What is the purpose of the new invention
A. To keep people warm. B. To help beat the heat in hot weather.
C. To find out the wearers’ temperature. D. To protect clothes from becoming wet.
9. How does the special product work
A. By sending out absorbed heat. B. By turning sunlight into energy.
C. By keeping heat out completely. D. By using light colors to reflect sunlight.
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The invention needs further testing. B. The studies in 2017 lack evidence.
C. The new textile has a good cooling effect. D. The new textile applies to various situations.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards the invention
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
D
Past surveys have shown that more than 80% of dog owners report observing jealous behavior from their dogs—vocalizations, disturbed behavior, pulling on a leash (绳子)—when they give attention to other dogs. New research published in the journal Psychological Science supports these observations and finds that dogs also exhibit jealous behavior when they merely imagine that their owner is interacting with a potential opponent, in this case, a highly realistic artificial dog.
Dogs appear to be one of the few species that might display jealous behavior in ways similar to a human child showing jealousy when their mother gives affection to another child. In humans, jealousy is closely linked with self-awareness, which is one reason animal-cognition researchers are so interested in studying jealousy and other secondary emotions in animals.
To test how and when dogs display jealous behavior, the researchers presented 18 dogs with situations where they could imagine a social interaction between their human companion and either a realistic fake dog or a wool cylinder (圆柱). The fake dog served as a potential opponent for attention while the cylinder served as a control. In the experiment, the dogs observed the fake-dog opponent positioned next to their owner. A barrier was then placed between the dog and the potential opponent stopping them from view. Despite blocking the line of sight. the dogs forcefully attempted to reach their owners when they appeared to stroke the fake dog behind the barrier. In a repeat experiment using a fleece cylinder rather than a fake dog, the dogs pulled on the leash with far less force.
Through their study, the researchers found that dogs showed three human-like features of jealous behavior. This behavior emerged only when their owner interacted with a noticed social opponent and not a lifeless object; occurred as a consequence of that interaction and not due to a potential opponent’s mere presence; and emerged even for an out-of-sight interaction between their owner and a social opponent.
“These results support claims that dogs display jealous behavior. They also provide the first evidence that dogs can mentally represent jealousy-causing social interactions,” said the researchers. “But there is still plenty of work to do to establish the extent of the similarities between the minds of humans and other animals, especially in terms of understanding the nature of nonhuman animals’ emotional experiences. It is too early to say whether dogs experience jealousy as we do, but it is now clear that they react to jealousy-causing situations, even if these occur out of sight.”
12. Why does the author mention the new research in Psychological Science
A. To make comparison. B. To make a prediction.
C. To provide example. D. To introduce the topic.
13. Why was a barrier used in the experiment
A. To distract dogs’ attention.
B. To block the sight of the dog.
C. To serve as a potential competitor.
D. To protect the fake dog from attack.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Dogs can experience jealousy as humans do.
B. Dogs make reactions based on their imagination.
C. More research is needed to study emotions of animals.
D. It is the first time that dogs have represented jealous behavior mentally.
15. Which of the following is the suitable title for the text
A. Are dogs jealous as humans?
B. Dogs, faithful friends of humans!
C. Be careful about the jealous dogs!
D. Are dogs the most clever animals

Pop-Pop, John’s grandpa, who lived with them after John’s grandma died, came shuffling through the door. Pop-Pop said, “When the robin sings, spring is here.” John’s mom added, “Tomorrow, John, let’s do the annual spring cleaning.”
The next day John and his mom cleaned the house. When looking at Pop-pop’s chair, John’s mom said, “That old chair has to go. We’ll buy Pop-Pop a new one. Let’s take it to the roadside. Tomorrow the garbage truck will pick it up.” John agreed because the chair was worn. As they attempted to move the chair, Pop-Pop came. He tried to stop John and his mom, saying he didn’t need a new one. Finally, John’s mom let go of the chair and said, “We’ll discuss it tonight when Matt gets home.” Matt, John’s dad, was still at work.
With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair. “Pop-Pop, why not get rid of this old chair ” John asked when his mother left the room. “You all don’t understand, John,” Pop-Pop whispered. “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. It was so long ago. But when I sit there, I feel she’s near. And the night your father was born, I sat in this chair, too. I was so happy when they placed the tiny baby into my arms.” As Pop-Pop continued telling his connection with the chair, John understood this chair was more like a friend to him.
That night, however, when John and Pop-Pop were asleep, John’s parents carried the chair to the roadside. It was a starless night. Spring had moved away temporarily, and snow fell silently and covered Pop-Pop’s chair. The next morning, when John came downstairs, he saw Pop-Pop standing by the window and looking outside. John followed his sad look. Snow-covered, the chair stood out on the street.

C To stress the importance of education.
D. To show his help with the publication.
7. What is the best title for the text

B 9. A 10. A 11. C

In humans jealousy is closely linked with self-awareness, which is one reason animal-cognition researchers are so interested in studying jealousy and other secondary emotions in animals.

故填have been made。
故填a。

故填which/that。
故填most famous。

“Mom! I’m home!” John happily said and ran into the kitchen. His mom was making cookies near the window. Outside, a robin was singing.

Paragraph 1:
The noise of the truck pulling up to the house shocked John into action. He ran outside "Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted, waving his arms in the air as he rushed to stop the men from pulling the chair away. Then he ran back inside and shouted at his mom, “Look at Pop-Pop, Mom. We should keep his chair. This chair is like a friend to Pop-Pop…” John’s mom turned and looked at the old man. As John continued explaining, she realized something and slowly walked towards Pop-Pop with tears in her eyes.
Paragraph 2:
And then John's mom said sorry to Pop-Pop and decided to get his chair back. She and John rushed outside towards the chair. They brushed off the snow on the chair with their hands and carried it back inside. They placed it next to the fireplace so it could dry. As if seeing the chair for the very first time, John's mom happily said, “Em, I guess it does give the room a certain touch of character.” And John and Pop-Pop wholeheartedly agreed that the living room had been rather dull without this old chair.
