Of course, my brother Michael and I were excited when she put forward the idea. Michael, 23, was finishing up an engineering degree. You’re going to be cold.” It had been seven years after I left home. And except during the holidays, my brother and I hadn’t spent much time together with our family for a long time.
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Inventions born out of love
Garbage Disposers
John W. Hammes, an architect from Wisconsin, created the InSinkErator in 1935. Hammes got the idea after watching his wife spend time wrapping food in newspaper and throwing it out. The InSinkErator is a device, installed under a kitchen sink between the sink’s drain and the trap. The disposal unit tears food waste into pieces small enough generally less than 2 mm in diameter—to pass through the plumbing.
Surgical Gloves
William Stewart Halsted, M.D. (1852-1922) was a well-known US surgeon who is often called the “Father of Modern Surgery”. Known for his strict adherence to sterile (无菌的) working conditions. Halsted invented rubber gloves that allowed his colleagues to lessen the transfer of germs during their work. Yet the initial reason why he created them is more romantic than you would think. Knowing Caroline, a nurse, suffered from a skin disease during her work, Halsted invented the gloves especially for her and gave them to her as a gift after their marriage.
Band-Aids
When Josephine Knight Dickson from New Jersey kept cutting herself while cooking for her family in the 1920s, her husband, Earle Dickson, stepped in. Dickson, a cotton buyer for Johnson & Johnson, according to the company’s website, decided to invent a temporary adhesive bandage for his wife. His creation became the Band-Aid we all know and use today.
Magnetic (磁性的) Shirt Buttons
Maura Horton’s husband, Don, was a football coach who had Parkinson’s disease. One day, after Don struggled to button his shirt before a game, Horton decided there needed to be a better clothing option for people suffering from a disability. So, Horton designed a shirt with magnetic buttons in 2012. These buttons will finally allow everyone to dress and undress themselves efficiently.
21. What’s the function of the InSinkErator
A. It can clear sink pipes. B. It can recycle kitchen waste.
C. It can extend the service life of kitchen sinks. D. It can remove food waste easily.
22. What can we learn about William’s surgical gloves
A. They made William known worldwide.
B. They assisted in the treatment of skin diseases.
C. They were invented with the aid of William’s colleagues.
D. They were originally intended for William’s wife.
23. Which of the following is the latest invention
A. Magnetic shirt buttons. B. Surgical gloves.
C. The InSinkErator. D. Band-Aids.

Both of my parents worked full time when I was a little girl,so my grandmother would stay at our house during the day. We would watch game shows in the living room. Our favorite was The Price Is Right. We would call out our answers along with the contestants.
When I got older and started going to school,we couldn’t watch our game shows regularly. That was okay with me,though, because the one thing I liked better than watching game shows with my grandmother was helping her bake cakes. Watching her in the kitchen was amazing:she never seemed to need the recipes(食谱)but everything she made tasted delicious.
At first I would just sit in the kitchen and watch, even though I didn’t understand what she was doing. As I got older, she let me help with the easy parts, such as measuring the sugar. The day she let me separate the eggs,I felt like I had found complete pleasure.
At last,my parents decided that I could take care of myself, and my grandmother stopped coming over every day. The love of baking, however, stayed with me. I started baking by myself, and even if the cookies ended up burnt sometimes, more often they turned out pretty well. I tried out new recipes, and whenever I got to a thorny part,I would call my grandmother for advice. Sometimes I would call her just to talk too. I felt like I could talk to her about anything.
My grandmother passed away ten years ago,but I still think of her every day. Last week,I found a recipe book she made for me. It included her recipes for brownies, cookies, and my favorite, lemon pie. As I looked through the pages,I thought I could hear her voice. She was the one who taught me not just about baking, but about life.

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.”
And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me cheek, already two weeks late.”
And then, in perfect English I said : “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”
Then she talked more loudly. “What he want I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan , was shouting to his boss in her broken English.
When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.
28. Why was the author’s mother poorly served
A. She was unable to speak good English. B. She was often misunderstood.
C. She was not clearly heard. D. She was not very polite.
29. After the author made the phone call, .
A. they forgave the stockbroker B. they failed to get the check
C. they went to New York immediately D. they spoke to their boss at once
30. What does the author think of her mother’s English now
A. It confuses her. B. It embarrasses her.
C. It helps her understand the world. D. It helps her tolerate rude people.
31. We can infer from the passage that Chinese English ________ .
A. is clear and natural to non-native speakers B. is vivid and direct to non-native speakers
C. has a very bad reputation in America D. may bring inconvenience in America
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. D

Modern technology has a strong influence on many things we do. In fact, technology is shaping almost every part of our day-to-day existence, including education. Ashok Goel is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Every term over 300 graduate students take his class on artificial intelligence(AI). The students never meet in person. All of the classes take place online—through a website.
Having hundreds of students in a class means Ashok Goel has to answer thousands of questions. He has eight teaching assistants to help him. But even that is not enough to give all the students the help they need. So, in January, he decided to try an experiment. At the start of the spring 2016 semester, he added a new member to his teaching team: Jill Watson. She was able to answer questions faster than most other teaching assistants. And she was available 24 hours a day. It was only at the end of the semester that Goel’s students learned Watson’s secret: she was not a real person. Jill Watson is an AI computer program. Goel says only two students came close to predicting Watson’s true identity. He was worried about telling his students because he thought they would not like being part of the experiment. But once they learned Watson’s identity, they became very excited. “Then, you know what happened They not only asked that question about Jill, ‘Is she an AI ’ Once the identity of Jill was revealed, they also asked if I was an AI.” he said.
Goel now uses Watson in two other classes, but still doesn’t tell his students which of his teaching assistants is a computer program. He hopes this technology will make it easier for teachers to create their programs to use in and outside the classroom.

D. Because it was hard to answer so many students’ questions.
34. What’s the students’ response to Jill Watson
A. Being surprised. B. Being indifferent.
C. Being excited. D. Being shocked.

第二节(满分25分)读后续写
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn’t know she was going to America and would not be returning.
Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, “Don’t worry, Grandma. Nothing’s going to happen to your scarf. You’ll see that it’s going to bring both of us luck.” And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.
Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.
“I’m sorry. Do I know you ” Eliza asked.
“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother’s best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother’s childhood friend

Paragraph 2:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then the old woman introduced herself, “My name is Betty. I’m originally from Poland, but left there when I was thirteen. And I have been living here in Washington DC in America ever since.” Eliza could not believe it, stories of her grandmother’s best friend floating into her mind. Assuming that the old woman must be her grandmother’s best friend, she said, “Betty, would you mind coming with me right now I need to show you somebody.”
The old woman agreed. Soon they left the restaurant after a quick dinner. On the way, Betty felt her heart was thumping with excitement. She couldn’t wait to see her long-lost friend. Arriving at Scout’s home, Betty eagerly rang the door bell. The moment Scout opened the door, she was rooted to the ground due to the amazement at seeing her childhood friend standing in front of her. Both of them were in tears, hugging each other tightly. Time seemed to cease to witness the great moment.

At last,my parents decided that I could take care of myself, and my grandmother stopped coming over every day The love of baking, however, stayed with me.

When I was fifteen she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she.

“I’m sorry dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open.
