The black cloud rising every day at sunset in the Chihuahuan Desert went largely ignored for thousands of years. Native Americans noticed it, but did not track its source. Cowboys thought the cloud was smoke pouring from the earth, and avoided it.
In June of 1901, however, a teenage cowboy named Jim White happened to see the large, black cloud. He was curious and went to investigate. Instead of finding a volcano, as he had imagined, he discovered something equally amazing. It was a big mass of bats. Two days later, he returned with a lantern to explore further. It took him so long that his lantern went out. He managed to refill it with just enough oil to find his way back to the entrance.
The next time Jim White went to the cave, he brought a friend and supplies. They explored for three days and returned with descriptions that were so fantastic that few people believed them. The cowboys on nearby farms and the people in the tiny town of Carlsbad treated Jim’s stories as tall tales and nothing more.
After years of exploring the caves and finding no one to believe his stories, Jim White decided to create his own tourist attraction. He established trails (路线) along the paths he had found. One day in 1915, two men asked Jim for a tour. After seeing the caves, the men returned with a professional photographer named Ray V. Davis. Local doubts were finally put to rest by the photographs of the hidden beauty that Jim had discovered. All 13 locals of Carlsbad finally took a tour of the caves, which came to be known as Carlsbad Caverns.
In 1923, the government sent an official named Robert Holly to tour the caves. Later that year, the caves were stated a national monument (古迹), and in 1930 they became a national park. Jim White lived to see the Carlsbad Caverns become world-famous. Today, tourists can hike to and tour some of the 100 known caves in this huge natural wonder, thanks to the cowboy from New Mexico.
4. What do we know about the black cloud
A. It was discovered in 1901. B. It was noticed by accident.
C. It was actually a mass of bats. D. It was smoke from the earth.
5. Who joined Jim’s third exploration
A Jim’s friend. B. A photographer.
C. Robert Holly. D. 13 locals of Carlsbad.
6. What can we conclude about the public’s recognition of Carlsbad Caverns
A. It made Jim White rich. B. It was an easy process.
C. It happened before 1915. D. It came true thanks to the photos.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. A Brave Cowboy B. A Hidden Wonder
C. A Worthwhile Invention D. A Nationwide Contribution
C 5. A 6. D 7. B

根据第二段的“In June of 1901, however, a teenage cowboy named Jim White happened to see the large, black cloud. He was curious and went to investigate. Instead of finding a volcano, as he had imagined, he discovered something equally amazing. It was a big mass of bats.(然而,1901年6月,一个名叫吉姆·怀特的十几岁的牛仔碰巧看到了大片的乌云。他很好奇,于是去调查。他没有像他想象的那样发现火山,而是发现了同样惊人的东西。那是一大群蝙蝠)”可知,那一大片乌云是一群蝙蝠。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。据上题分析可知,那是吉姆的一次探索。根据第二段的“Two days later, he returned with a lantern to explore further. (两天后,他提着灯笼回来,继续探索)”可知,两天后是吉姆第二次探索;根据第三段的“The next time Jim White went to the cave, he brought a friend and supplies. (下一次吉姆·怀特去山洞时,他带了一个朋友和补给)”可知,这次是吉姆第三次探索,这次他带了一个朋友,即一个朋友加入了吉姆的第三次探索。故选A。
根据倒数第二段的“After seeing the caves, the men returned with a professional photographer named Ray V. Davis. Local doubts were finally put to rest by the photographs of the hidden beauty that Jim had discovered. All 13 locals of Carlsbad finally took a tour of the caves, which came to be known as Carlsbad Caverns.(看到洞穴后,这些人带着一位名叫雷·V·戴维斯的专业摄影师回来了。吉姆发现的隐藏的美丽的照片最终消除了当地的疑虑。卡尔斯巴德的所有13名当地人最终都参观了这些洞穴,后来被称为卡尔斯巴德洞穴)”可知,由于这些照片公众才相信了Carlsbad Caverns的存在。故选D。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段的“Native Americans noticed it, but did not track its source. Cowboys thought the cloud was smoke pouring from the earth, and avoided it.(美洲原住民注意到了它,但没有追踪它的来源。牛仔们以为云是从地上冒出来的烟,于是避开了它)”,第三段的“They explored for three days and returned with descriptions that were so fantastic that few people believed them. (他们探索了三天,回来时描述山洞太棒,但几乎没有人相信)”,倒数第二段的“After years of exploring the caves and finding no one to believe his stories, Jim White decided to create his own tourist attraction. (经过多年探索洞穴,发现没有人相信他的故事,吉姆·怀特决定创建自己的旅游景点)”以及最后一段的“Later that year, the caves were stated a national monument (古迹), and in 1930 they became a national park. (那年晚些时候,这些洞穴被列为国家古迹, 1930年,它们成为国家公园)”可知,本文主要讲述了卡尔斯巴德洞穴存在了几千年,一直被人们忽视,后来一个名叫吉姆·怀特的牛仔发现了它,使它闻名于世,故B项“隐藏的奇观”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B。
C
Antarctic blue whales have been perceived again in the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. An international-team of researchers discovered the animals five decades after whaling (捕鲸业) nearly caused them to disappear forever. “The ocean resources at South Georgia were heavily developed during the early 20th-century industrial whaling,” says lead author Susannah Calderan, an ecologist with the Scottish Association for Marine Science.
Antarctic blue whales were plentiful in the area until whaling began there in 1904, kicking off the beginning of industrial whaling in the Southern Ocean. While hunters originally focused on species that could be easily caught, like the humpback whale, the focus quickly moved to the blue whale. Between 1904 and 1973, 345,775 Antarctic blue whales were killed in the Southern hemisphere (半球)and in the northern Indian Ocean. Around South Georgia, blue whale catches were reported year-round without stopping. Between 1904 and 1971, industrial whaling caused 42, 698 blue whales’ death, Blue whales almost disappeared in these areas.
Researchers studied all Antarctic blue whale data from the last three decades. They examined sightings (目睹)from scientific surveys collected by observers on ships, as well as opportunistic sightings reported by seamen and ship passengers to the South Georgia. They also examined acoustic(声音的)recordings of blue whale.
They found that whale surveys from ships off South Georgia resulted in just one blue whale sighting between 1998 and 2018. But more recent surveys suggest better news. A survey in February of 2020 found nearly 60 blue whale sightings, and several acoustic detections (探测).A total of 41 blue whales have been recognized through photos from South Georgia between 2011 and 2020.
“Their return is very meaningful, as it was widely thought that blue whales at South Georgia might have been hunted beyond a point where they could recover, and might never be seen again in great numbers at South Georgia,” Calderan says. “Our research shows that, populations can recover even from very low levels if they’re given enough protection.”
8. What does the underlined word “perceived” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Kept. B. Found. C. Hunted. D. Destroyed.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly want to tell us
A. The development of industrial whaling.
B. The cause of blue whales’ disappearance.
C. The wide spread of blue whales in the past.
D. The tricks of catching blue whales easily.
10. What did the researchers find through their surveys in South Georgia
A. There is an increasing return of blue whales.
B. Blue whales are in a more dangerous situation.
C. More and more people like watching blue whales.
D. South Georgia is a good place to watch blue whales.
11. What might be discussed in the following paragraph
A. The risk of killing whales at higher rates.
B. The sign of Antarctic blue whales’ return.
C. The way of protecting Antarctic blue whales.
D. The effect of the great loss of ocean resources.
B 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据划线单词后的“again(再一次)”以及后一句话“An international-team of researchers discovered the animals five decades after whaling (捕鲸业) nearly caused them to disappear forever. (一个国际研究团队在捕鲸几乎使它们永远消失50年后发现了这些动物)”可知,一个国际研究团队在捕鲸几乎使它们永远消失50年后发现了这些南极蓝鲸,说明南极蓝鲸在几乎消失后再次被发现。所以划线单词的意识是“发现”。故选B。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段第三、四句话“Between 1904 and 1973, 345,775 Antarctic blue whales were killed in the Southern hemisphere(半球)and in the northern Indian Ocean. Around South Georgia, blue whale catches were reported year-round without stopping. Between 1904 and 1971, industrial whaling caused 42, 698 blue whales’ death, Blue whales almost disappeared in these areas.(1904年至1973年间,345775头南极蓝鲸在南半球和北印度洋被捕杀。据报道,在南乔治亚州,蓝鲸的捕获量全年不间断。1904年至1971年间,工业捕鲸导致42698头蓝鲸死亡,蓝鲸几乎在这些地区消失)”可知,第二段主要通过数据的形式告诉读者南极蓝鲸几乎消失的原因。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“They found that whale surveys from ships off South Georgia resulted in just one blue whale sighting between 1998 and 2018. But more recent surveys suggest better news. A survey in February of 2020 found nearly 60 blue whale sightings, and several acoustic detections (探测).A total of 41 blue whales have been recognized through photos from South Georgia between 2011 and 2020.(他们发现,1998年至2018年间,在南乔治亚州附近的船只上进行的鲸鱼调查只发现了一只蓝鲸。 故选A。
根据最后一段最后一句话“Our research shows that, populations can recover even from very low levels if they’re given enough protection.( 我们的研究表明,如果给予足够的保护,人口甚至可以从非常低的水平恢复)”可知,如果给予了足够的保护,蓝鲸的数量甚至可以从非常低的水平恢复。
Today, people are working from home more than ever. As a result, many dogs are enjoying a lot more time with, and attention from, their owners. Dog adoption (收养) rates have skyrocketed as people seek enjoyment and companionship. But what will happen when life eventually returns to normal _____12_____.
Teach puppies alone time
_____13_____. Otherwise, they may become anxious when they are alone, which can result in damaging behavior such as chewing on furniture and digging up plants in the garden. Teaching your puppy to be comfortable alone right from the start will help you avoid separation issues in future. Pleasing as it is to let your cute puppy follow you around, this can lead to them becoming overly dependent and potentially anxious when left alone.
Set up a playpen or Crate
An enclosed space will keep them safe when you’re not in the same room. Allocate (分配) some time each day to leave your puppy alone – after playtime is perfect. Allow them an opportunity to toilet and then give them something safe to chew on to help them settle. If you are planning for your dog to spend time outside during the day, it is essential that you set this up from the beginning.
_____14_____
It’s important for adult dogs to also spend time alone. When you are home, put your dog outside for short periods while offering a chew (咀嚼) toy, or encourage them to settle on their bed or in a crate while you move around different parts of the home. Setting up and maintaining an exercise routine (惯例) will be important once you start leaving home more, or your dog may become bored and possibly damaging.
Establish good chew habits
Teach your puppy or dog what is acceptable for them to chew. Only give them toys that are clearly different from household items. _____15_____. When you want your dog to have some quiet time, give them a safe chew toy so they learn to connect this time with something positive. When you leave home, give them a chew toy to help them relax and keep them busy.
Train your dog
This should include teaching the basics of “sit”, “stay”, and “down” but also training them to go to their bed and stay in position when requested. _____16_____.
A. Create a routine
B. Maintain appropriate exercise
C. Dogs like routine because it makes them feel safe
D. Chewable toys that can be stuffed with a treat like peanut butter are a good choice
E. Trick training is also a nice way to use any extra time to develop the bond with your dog
F. These tips will help you raise a puppy or train a dog to be content when you are not around
G. Dogs are social creatures and need to learn some skills to be comfortable when left unattended
F 13. G 14. A 15. D 16. E
空前“As a result, many dogs are enjoying a lot more time with, and attention from, their owners. Dog adoption (收养) rates have skyrocketed as people seek enjoyment and companionship.(因此,许多狗狗享受了更多的时间和主人在一起,也得到了主人的关注。
空后“Otherwise, they may become anxious when they are alone, which can result in damaging behavior such as chewing on furniture and digging up plants in the garden.(否则,当它们独处时,它们可能会变得焦虑,这可能导致破坏性的行为,如咀嚼家具和在花园里挖植物)”说明狗独处时会变得焦虑,空格处应该说狗天生就需要陪伴的,G选项“Dogs are social creatures and need to learn some skills to be comfortable when left unattended(狗是群居动物,需要学习一些技能,以便在无人看管的情况下保持舒适)”说明狗是群居动物,习惯了有同类的陪伴,和后文的独处时会焦虑相呼应,因此引起下文,符合语境,故选G。
空格处是本段小标题,由空后的“Setting up and maintaining an exercise routine (惯例) will be important once you start leaving home more, or your dog may become bored and possibly damaging.(一旦你开始更多地离开家,建立并保持锻炼的例行程序将是很重要的,否则你的狗可能会变得无聊,并可能造成伤害)”可知,本段主要讲的是要建立锻炼的习惯,A选项“Create a routine(建立例行程序)”说明了要建立锻炼的程序,因此概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题,故选A。
空前“Teach your puppy or dog what is acceptable for them to chew. Only give them toys that are clearly different from household items.(教你的小狗或狗狗什么是它们可以接受用来嚼的。只给他们与家庭用品明显不同的玩具)”说明了可以给它们一些可以咀嚼的玩具,空格处也应该接着说这样的玩具应该是怎么样的,D选项“Chewable toys that can be stuffed with a treat like peanut butter are a good choice(可以塞满花生酱之类的可嚼玩具是个不错的选择)”说明了可咀嚼的玩具的一个例子,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选D。
【16题详解】
本段小标题是“Train your dog(训练你的狗)”,空前“This should include teaching the basics of “sit”, “stay”, and “down” but also training them to go to their bed and stay in position when requested.(这应该包括教他们基本的“坐”、“待”和“躺”,但也要训练他们在被要求时回到床上并保持原位)”说明了要训练狗哪些内容,空格处应该说这些训练的好处,E选项“Trick training is also a nice way to use any extra time to develop the bond with your dog(技巧训练也是一个很好的方法,利用任何额外的时间来发展与你的狗的联系)”说明了这些训练的好处,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选E。

Lightning flashed through the darkness over Sibson’s bedroom skylight(天窗). Sibson was shaken by a clap of thunder before he knew what was happening. The storm had moved directly through his two-story wooden house. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping.
Sibson rushed down the stairs barefoot to check. He opened the door to the basement, and flames exploded out. Sibson ran back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom. “I felt glad because the room had a separate outdoor stairway,” he explained to the media later.
But the phone didn’t work, and when he tried to go down the outdoor stairway, he was stopped by a wall of flames. Sibson realized he was trapped. Suddenly, a piece of wood fell from the roof. Sharp pain raced through his body as he looked down and found his leg bleeding.
Sibson’s house was three kilometers off the main road and was so well hidden by trees that he knew calling for help would be fruitless.
Up a hill nearby lived Sibson’s neighbor, Huggons. He was lying in bed when something like a smoke alarm struck his ears. He jumped out of bed, took his phone and flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the noise. That was when he saw the rolling heavy smoke.
Huggons dialed 911, and the operator warned him not to enter the house. But Huggons said, “There is no way I am going to listen to Sibson scream and die in that fire.”
“Anyone there ” Huggons called out. Then he heard “Help! I’m trapped!” coming from the second floor balcony. He entered the house, but soon had to run back to catch his breath.
After one more attempt to get inside the house, Huggons gave up and circled around back. The wind parted the smoke just enough for him to catch sight of Sibson. But there was no way to get to him.
With the wind fueling the fire, there was no time to waste and the second floor seemed to be falling down in the next minute.

“Go! Leave me alone!” shouted Sibson with desperate tears in his eyes, “It will kill you, too.”

With the wind fueling the fire, there was no time to waste and the second floor seemed to be falling down in the next minute. Sibson was in great pain in the fire, and Huggons struggled to find a solution. He looked around, got a fire extinguisher, and tried to rush onto the balcony again to save Sibson, but the fire was too intense for him to get near. Huggons was anxious as the second floor of the house was about to collapse.
“Go! Leave me alone!” shouted Sibson with desperate tears in his eyes, “It will kill you, too.” Huggons was fightened but did not want to leave him alone. He shone the flashlight into the woods and noticed a ladder. He took it over to the balcony and pulled Sibson down just as the second floor of the house fell off. Sibson is still 40 when he tells the story. “I was alone that night,” he says. “Then I heard the most beautiful sound in my life. It was Huggons.”

He entered the house but soon had to run back to catch his breath.
After one more attempt to get inside the house, Huggons gave up and circled around back. The wind parted the smoke just enough for him to catch sight of Sibson. But there was no way to get to him.
With the wind fueling the fire, there was no time to waste and the second floor seemed to be falling down in the next minute.
