Mark Rothko, one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century, was born in Daugavpils, Latvia in 1903. His father immigrated to the United States, fearing that his son would be drafted (招募) into the Czarist army. Mark stayed in Russia with his mother and elder sister; they joined the family later, arriving in the winter of 1913, after a 12-day voyage.
Mark moved to New York in the autumn of 1923 and found employment in the garment trade and took up residence on the Upper West Side. It was while he was visiting someone at the Art Students League that he saw students sketching a nude model. According to him, this was the start of his life as an artist. He was twenty years old and had taken some art lessons at school, so his initial experience was far from an immediate calling.
In 1936, Mark Rothko began writing a book, which he never completed about the similarities in the children’s art and the work of modern painters. The work of modernists, which was influenced by primitive (原始的) art, according to him, could be compared to that of children in that “Child art transforms itself into primitivism (原始主义), which is only the child producing a mimicry (模仿) of himself.” However, in this same work, he said that “The fact that one usually begins with drawing is already academic. We start with the colors.”
It was not long before his multiform developed into the style he is remembered for; in 1949 Rothko exhibited these new works at the Betty Parsons Gallery. For critic Harold Rosenberg, the paintings were a revelation. After painting his first multiform, Rothko withdrew himself to his home in East Hampton on Long Island. The discovery of his definitive form came at a period of great grief; his mother Kate died in October 1948 and it was at some point during that winter that Rothko chanced upon the striking symmetrical (对称的) rectangular blocks of two to three opposing or contrasting, yet complementary colors (对称). As part of this new uniformity of artistic vision, his paintings and drawings no longer had individual titles: from this point on they were simply untitled, numbered or dated. However, to assist in distinguishing one work from another, dealers would sometimes add the primary colors to the name.
4. Mark Rothko’s family have experienced all of the following except .
A. a separation from his father B. the call up of the army
C. a temporary stay in Russia D. a 12-day voyage to the United States
5. What made Mark Rothko want to be an artist
A. His move to the Upper West Side.
B. His visit to the Art Students League.
C. His sight of the students’ drawing.
D. His lessons took in art school.
6. Mark Rothko thought modern art share some similarities with child art because .
A. they are both considered childish and academic
B. they are both ways of expressing primitivism
C. they are both a copy of the painters themselves
D. they ate both striking blocks and colors
7. Which of the following statements is true about Mark Rothko’s style
A. It was inspired by Rosenberg.
B. It resulted from moving to Long Island.
C. It resulted from his grief.
D. It evolved (develop gradually) in 1948.

Gretchen Altman is smiling, leaning back casually, a cup of coffee in hand — Hills Bros. Coffee, to be precise. It looks like a casual shot, but if you hit like, leave a comment, and tag a friend, you can get three different cups of coffee, for free.
Altman is part of a growing trend of "micro-influencers". She has a small following — around 6,000 on Instagram(社交平台). Her going rate is $300 to $800 to promote something. She does some posts in exchange for free goods, as long as it’s stuff she believes in.
As a micro-influencer she has a much closer relationship with her followers than a big social media star. "I’m just living a normal life and people relate to that," she says. "They just feel like I’m a friend of theirs."
But it worries consumer rights groups. Several recent studies have found that young audiences are largely unable to understand when something is sponsored content.
In some cases, it’s clear. When a big star takes to a social media to advertise Coca-Cola, for example, the assumption is that he or she’s probably getting paid to do so. And the posts are clearly labeled as ads, with the caption "advertisement" or "sponsored content".
But what happens when an everyday person with just a couple thousand followers takes to social media to extol(颂扬) the virtues of a product The motivations are not so clear cut. The problem with these social media posts is that you don’t know whether it’s an ad or not.
Altman is diligent about using those hashtags(标签). She loves what she does and sees it as a business, but she doesn’t necessarily want to be a social media celebrity.
"With social media being so integrated into our everyday lives, we have this unique opportunity that I don’t think anyone has ever had before where we can each be our own brand," Altman says.
8. What does a micro-influencer do according to the passage
A. Give enough likes. B. Post to promote sales.
C. Recommend some comments. D. Design advertisements.
9. What makes consumer rights groups feel worried
A. Sponsored ads content.
B. Ads with caption on posts.
C. The unclear motivations of the posts.
D. The increasingly growing number of audiences.
10. How does Gretchen Altman feel about being a micro-influencer
A. Annoyed. B. Delighted. C. Ambitious. D. Depressed.
11. Which of the following can be the best title
A. Instagram Advertising: Do You Know It, When You See It
B. To be a Micro-influencer or to be a Big Star
C. We Can Each Be Our Own Top Brand
D. Hills Bros. Coffee, Your Coffee
D
For people who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is definitely making noise. In the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording studios, but many of today’s sound professionals are sharing their knowledge and experience with professionals in other fields to create new products based on the phenomenon we call sound.
Sound can be used as a weapon. Imagine that a police officer is chasing a thief. The thief tries to escape. And the officer can’t let him get away. he pulls out a special device points it at the suspect, and switches it on. The thief drops to the ground. This new weapon is called a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD, 远程定向声波发射器). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it temporarily disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly.
For those who hunger for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence. Let’s say you are at the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming(哼唱)a short commercial song. He hums it over and over again, and you are about to go crazy. Thanks to the Silence Machine a British invention, you can get rid of the sound without upsetting the boy or his parents. One may wonder how the Silence Machine works. Well, it functions by analyzing the waves of the incoming sound and creating a second set of outgoing waves. The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn the machine on, point it at the target, and your peace and quiet comes back.
Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much the same way spotlights(聚光灯) are used in the theater. A spotlight lights up only one section of a stage; similarly, a “spotsound” creates a circle of sound in one targeted area. This can be useful for businesses such as restaurants and stores because it offers a new way to attract customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of music along with the various food choices on the menu, allowing customers more control over the atmosphere in which they are dining. Directed sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers and even at homes.
12. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the effect of the LRAD
A. It causes temporary hearing loss B. It slows down a running man
C. It makes it easy to identify a suspect D. It keeps the suspect from hurting others
13. The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to ________.
A silence the people around you B. remove the sound of commercials
C. block the incoming sound waves D. stop unwanted sound from affecting you
14. What feature do spotsounds and spotlights share
A. They travel in circles B. They clear the atmosphere.
C. They can be transformed into energy D. They can be directed onto a specific area
15. Directed sound can be used for ________.
A. creative designs of restaurant menus B. ideal sound effects on the theater stage
C. different choices of music for businesses D. strict control over any suspicious customer

You run into the grocery store to pick up one bottle of water. You get what you need, head to the front, and choose the line that looks fastest.
You chose wrong. People who you swear got in other lines long after you are already checked out and off to the parking lot. ___16___
It turns out, it’s just math working against you; chances are, the other line really is faster.
Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout to get all their customers through with minimum delay. ___17___Any small interruption-a price check, a chatty customer-can have downstream effects, holding up an entire line.
If there are three lines in the store, delays will happen randomly at different registers. Think about the probability:____18____So it's not just in your mind: Another line probably is moving faster.
Researchers have a good way to deal with this problem. Make all customers stand in one long, snaking line- called a serpentine line-and serve each person at the front with the next available register. ___19___This is what they do at most banks and fast-food restaurants. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead, it will slow down everyone a little bit but speed up checkout overall.
____20____It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly, and some stores can't afford the space or manpower. So wherever your next wait may be: Good luck.
A. Why does this always seem to happen to you
B. So why don’t most places encourage serpentine lines
C. Some of the may have stood in a queue for almost an hour.

E. How high is the probability that you are in the fastest waiting line

G. But sometimes, as on a Sunday afternoon, the system gets particularly busy.

第二节概要写作(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要
Change is an unavoidable part of everyday life. It happens as time passes or as a consequence of one's decision. Changes may be positive or negative depending on how we understand them. Whereas some people are happy to live a life of routine, others accept change and prefer a challenging world where events are unpredictable
From one point of view, people who accept changes think that changes make their life meaningful. Firstly, changes create new opportunities, which make us leap forward. A new job, for instance, might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Secondly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable
On the other hand, people who don't want to step outside their comfort zone prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstances. Perhaps they feel that a routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believe that staying secure and maintaining the present circumstances is the best way to live life safer. Such people have set times for performing certain functions and do things in the same way all the time. They fear the uncertainty of the unknown and may associate change with negative outcomes. For example, transition in position or status gives people worries as to whether they can manage a new task
Both sides seem to have their own advantages. However, I personally think change is necessary if someone wants to keep up with the fast pace of modem life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving. Without change there would be no life at all. Our lives are actually fueled by change and seeing change as natural and unavoidable will bring us considerable stress relief.

Gretchen Altman is smiling leaning back casually, a cup of coffee in hand — Hills Bros.

13 The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to ________.
A. silence the people around you B. remove the sound of commercials
C. block the incoming sound waves D. stop unwanted sound from affecting you
14. What feature do spotsounds and spotlights share
A. They travel in circles B. They clear the atmosphere.
C. They can be transformed into energy D. They can be directed onto a specific area
15. Directed sound can be used for ________.
A. creative designs of restaurant menus B. ideal sound effects on the theater stage
C. different choices of music for businesses D. strict control over any suspicious customer
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. C

Make all customers stand in one long snaking line- called a serpentine line-and serve each person at the front with the next available register.
D. The chances of your line being the fastest are only one in three.
E. How high is the probability that you are in the fastest waiting line
F. With three registers, this method is much faster than the traditional approach.
G. But sometimes, as on a Sunday afternoon, the system gets particularly busy.
【答案】16. A 17. G 18. D 19. F 20. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。文章说明了杂货店排队方式以及研究人员提出的蛇形队伍的新方式,并分析了各自的利弊。
【16题详解】
根据下文“It turns out, it’s just math working against you; chances are, the other line really is faster. (原来,这只是你的数学问题;很可能,另一个队伍真的更快)”解释了上文“You chose wrong.(你选错了)”的原因,下文与空格处是因果关系,所以本空应该是对前文选错提出疑惑,A选项“Why does this always seem to happen to you ( 为什么这种事总是发生在你身上 )”符合文意,故选A项。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout to get all their customers through with minimum delay.(杂货店尽量让足够的员工在结账时让所有的顾客以最小的延误完成结账)”解释了杂货店之前的工作模式,下文“Any small interruption a price check, a chatty customer -can have downstream effects, holding up an entire line.(任何一个小小的中断,一个价格检查,一个喋喋不休的顾客,都会产生下游效应,拖住整个生产线)”描述了杂货店的特殊情况,故本空应该填出现特殊情况的原因,G项“But sometimes, as on a Sunday afternoon, the system gets particularly busy.(但有时,比如在周日下午,系统会变得特别繁忙)”,与此呼应。故选G项。
【18题详解】
根据上文“If there are three lines in the store, delays will happen randomly at different registers. (如果杂货店中有三列队伍,延迟将在不同的队伍中随机发生)”联系下文“So it’s not just in your mind: Another line probably is moving faster.(所以这不仅仅是在你的脑海里:另一条队伍可能移动得更快)”可知本空说的是任何一个队伍都有可能出现问题。你的队伍跑得最快的几率只有三分之一。D项“The chances of your line being the fastest are only one in three.(你的线路是最快的几率只有三分之一)”与此对应。故选D项。
【19题详解】
根据“上文Researchers have a good way to deal with this problem.(我们得知研究人员有一个很好的方法来处理这个问题)”以及下文“This is what they do at most banks and fast-food restaurants. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won’t unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead, it will slow down everyone little bit but speed up checkout overall.(这个大多数银行和快餐店都是这样做的。有了一条蜿蜒的队伍,在一个登记处长时间拖延不会不公平地惩罚后面排队的人。相反,它会减慢每个人一点点,但加快了整体结账速度)”说明这个新方案迅速有效,联系上下文可知,空格中应该是与旧的结账方案作比较。F项“With three registers, this method is much faster than the traditional approach.(由于有三个寄存器,这种方法比传统方法要快得多)”与此对应。故选F项。
【20题详解】
结合下文“It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly, and some stores can’t afford the space or manpower.(要保持一条生产线的快速运转,需要很多的收银机,而且有些商店负担不起空间和人力)”说明了一个原因,由此可知,空格处提出了一个问题;通过“It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly.(保持一条生产线的快速运转)”可知这里描述的是不鼓励蛇形队伍的原因。B项“So why don’t most places encourage serpentine lines (那么,为什么大多数地方不鼓励使用蛇形线条呢?)”解释了该原因。故选B项。
