A saying goes that “Never be afraid of making mistakes. In fact, making progress is making mistakes. Mistakes are where success lies.” , which conveys that we should learn from mistakes rather than avoid them.
I deeply understood this quote when I struggled with math in high school. Even with intense efforts, I still made substantial mistakes and did poorly in exams. Constant mistakes discouraged me and gradually I lost heart. However, the moment I encountered the saying, I came to realize that mistakes were valuable, from which we can learn lessons and make progress. From then on, when faced with mistakes, I adopted a positive attitude, ultimately turning them into stepping stones to success.
Therefore, mistakes are not what we should be afraid of. What really matters is our attitude to them. Only by learning from them can we make progress.

After college I wanted to make a difference in the world,so I joined the Peace Corps and became a volunteer teacher in Namibia,my country of assignment(任务). Honestly,my first choice wasn't Africa, but I am extremely grateful that I was sent there.
Various tribes and racial groups live in Namibia and a number of languages are spoken. When Namibia gained independence in 1990, English became the official language. Teachers were supposed to teach in English, but many lacked the language skills to do so. My job was to train the teachers.
Schools were quite bare. Some classrooms consisted merely of sticks stuck in the sand and a metal roof. Each student had only one threadbare uniform. The students had exhausting days. They walked miles to get to school, often barefoot. They also did many daily chores. Even with their mountains of work, few possessions and little opportunity, these children were joyful. I admired that.
This was my first time living abroad in a different culture. Simply adapting to the living conditions was a big adjustment. I had no electricity, running water, phone or Internet. Imagine no air conditioning where the temperature was often above 38 degrees Celsius! However, I could end each day with a splendid African sunset. And at night, I could have an incredible pollution-free view of the entire Milky Way(银河).
Before Namibia,I never thought a girl like me would adapt to such an environment. My experience awakened me to not only the limitations we place on ourselves, but also our amazing ability to adapt.
Step outside of your comfort zone and throw yourself in another culture. You won't regret it.
4. What do we know about Namibia before 1990
A. Everyone could speak many languages. B. Teachers taught English as an official language.
C. It was ruled by other countries. D. Teachers had a good command of English.
5. What does the underlined word “threadbare” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Ancient. B. Uncomfortable. C. Ugly. D. Shabby.
6. Which of the following best describes the author according to Paragraph 4
A. Honest and fearless. B. Brave and clever.
C. Adaptable and optimistic. D. Generous and kind.
7. Why did the author feel grateful to volunteer in Namibia
A. She gained pure friendship from African children.
B. The beautiful scenery in Africa impressed her a lot.
C. She succeeded in challenging her limits.
D. Africans' hard life touched her deeply.

It's mid February and along Britain's south coast gilt head bream (鲷鱼) are swimming from the open sea into the river mouths. And this summer, countryside visitors throughout southern England will catch sight of blue flashes as small red eyed damselflies fly across starry ponds. Both events are happening much further north than they would have 20 years ago.
Fingers point at climate change. As areas become too hot or dry, many wildlife populations are declining, while some species are showing up in places that were historically too cold or wet.
Our team, led by Alba Estrada, wanted to explain this phenomenon. If we could predict which species can and can't colonise (移居) in new locations,we could decide which are most in need of conservation.
How far individual animals or plant seeds can move was long thought to be the most important factor. But according to our findings, other characteristics also turned out to be highly important. For example, how quickly plants and animals can produce, how well they can compete with other species for resources, and what kinds of food they can eat or habitat they can live in.
The result of this is that we might be able to predict which animals will survive under climate change. The wood mouse is found throughout continental Europe. As climate changes,we think the mouse will move north because it can breed quickly, live in lots of habitats, has a broad diet, and individuals can travel a long way. And consider the European ground squirrel. We think it might stay just in southeast Europe because it can only live in grasslands and climate change won't suddenly turn farms and forests into meadows (草地).
It's encouraging to know that some species are doing well under climate change. There are some headaches, however. Those gilt head bream are feeding on the local shellfish, which might be taking food away from the native fish. Small red eyed damselflies look great, but they could become all too common around British ponds and outcompete native species.Climate change is once again posing us some tricky conservation questions.
8.What can we learn from Paragraph 1& Paragraph 2
A.People hold events to observe different species.
B.Visitors have damaged the homes of many species.
C.Species preferred an extremely cold and wet environment.
D.Climate change makes some species move to new areas.
9.What's Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. What factors can influence species' colonisation. B.How far individual animals can travel.
C.Why some species are declining. D.Where most species tend to live.
10.Which might stand the least chance of colonisation
A.Gilt head bream. B.Red eyed damselflies.
C.Wood mice. D.Ground squirrels.
11.What's the team's attitude towards the colonisation
A.Indifferent. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Optimistic.

The tomato leafminer moth originates from Peru and is common throughout South America. However, it has spread through Europe since 2007 and has become one of the largest pests in Mediterranean regions, threatening food supplies. Experts around the world are currently struggling with new ways to battle the moth, but it has developed resistance to pesticides , leaving farmers helpless to stop the damage. Now a new study from the University of Portsmouth has shown that an answer may lie in the tropical tent-web spider.
Scientists carried out laboratory tests and found that the spiders banded together to form webs which easily caught the flying insects, which they then ate. The tropical tent-web spider operate in large groups and can create giant joined-up webs to capture bugs. Dr. Lena Grinsted, the lead author of the study, said, “Spiders can provide large surface areas of capture webs capable of catching insects in the air. This could potentially lead to a reduction of reliance on chemical pesticides, resulting in less pollution in soils, waterways and food chains in the future.”
Crop damage is also caused by the larvae (幼虫), which directly attack the tomato fruit, making the crop ugly and thus unmarketable. Larvae live inside the leaf until they begin the process of turning into a moth, making them difficult to control. However, scientists expect that by targeting the adult moth population, it will reduce the number of eggs being laid. In addition, the spiders build the biggest webs during the summer months, which will benefit the tomato planting and growing season in May and June.
The researchers said the study will “open doors for the use of group-living spiders to control agricultural pests”, but warned that more work was needed to check the spiders did not change the ecology of regions. Dr. Grinsted added, “Future studies are now needed to investigate whether the spiders may negatively impact crop pollination (授粉) by also catching bees and other key pollinators.”
12. Why is it difficult to get rid of the moth according to Paragraph 1
A. It is large in size. B. It is drug-resistant.
C. It spreads too quickly. D. It threatens food supply.
13. What makes using the spiders to control pests possible
A. Their ability to weave huge webs. B. The reduction of pest-control cost.
C. Their importance in the food chain. D. The pollution of chemical pesticides.
14. How do scientists plan to deal with the larvae
A. By destroying the eggs. B. By reducing food supply.
C. By controlling the source. D. By stopping them hatching.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Moths: The Biggest Threat to Crops B. Moths: A Species Difficult to Control
C. Spiders: The Future of Modern Agriculture D. Spiders: An Eco-friendly Alternative to Drugs

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seatle, where my parents started their new business--a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don't have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show ” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can't help following you here. ” Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank " My mum bent towards us and her face lit up.“A big occasion.”Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you'll be a perfect match.”Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing (排练)almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
