With 365,000 residents and almost a million people in the surrounds, Zürich(苏黎世) is the country’s biggest city. Although the city’s roots go back to 15 BC, it wasn’t until 1848 that the districts of Switzerland united in confederation(联邦). Today, Zürich is a world-class, international destination which attracts millions to tourists every year. The arrival of immigration has changed the city’s face. It’s common to find Chinese or Lebanese dishes next to a Swiss restaurant selling traditional food.
Once known as a banking and business center, the city has slowly reinvented itself. The best evidence can be found in Züri West. It used to be an industrial area, and has been transformed into a place of fashionable restaurants, shops and apartments.
I parked my bike at the Schiffbau, a former boat-factory that is now one of the hottest places in town. It was still early morning, and I wandered past La Salle Restaurant, where people were laying white cloth on the tables. Then, I walked over to the former L wenbrau brewery factory, which now houses five art galleries and three museums. 2-1-c-n-j-y
Traveling around Zürich by bicycle is enjoyable, and it’s a good idea, since parking spaces are hard to come by. There are many bike tracks along the wide, clean streets. For a deposit of CHF 20 (about US$16), visitors can get a bike for free at the bike station behind the Hauptbahnhof (main train station).
The city’s best shopping can be found in the area south of the train station, which offers plenty of treasures, from high-end designer clothing to the world’s best watches. Switzerland is not part of the European Union, which contributes to higher prices than many other places in Europe. At times, the prices can be shocking, such as having to pay US$11 for two small bottles of water.

A teenage soldier, who was turned into a human fireball in a petrol bomb attack in Iraq, has battled back to fitness to complete amazing 126 marathons(马拉松). Karl Hinett, 27, has covered more than 6,650 miles across five continents, including marathons at both the North and South Pole.
Karl was only 19 when he almost died during an operation in Iraq in 2005. He was inside a tank which was attacked by enemies. An image of him rolling down the front of the tank covered in flames as he escaped from the tank made headlines around the world. While the other four soldiers in the tank escaped serious injury, Karl received 37 percent burns. He underwent five years of painful skin grafts (移植) and operations. After being discharged from hospital, he set himself the challenge of running an astonishing 200 marathons by the time he turns 30.
He started the London Marathon in 2007, and after running 126 marathons in seven years, including events in Helsinki, Miami and Tokyo, he looks to be right on for his target. He has already raised more than $10,000 for the burns unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the process.
He also attempted to climb Mount Everest with other wounded servicemen, training for the difficult journey with Prince Harry, though the mission had to be called off due to avalanche (雪崩)risks. Karl said, “The hospital gave me life, so I intended to use that life to give back to them as long as possible.”
For Karl, the most difficult run he has ever done was a seven-day Ultra Marathon in the Amazon rainforest back in 2012. “It’s basically seven marathons in seven days, and by the end my hands and feet were infected, it was so tough,” he said.
Karl has now taken some time out from running to plan his wedding with his artist fiancée Beth Platts, 27.

After a full roast turkey lunch, it is traditional to try to work off the calories with a long walk in the great outdoors. Now scientists have shown that “interacting with nature”, even in the middle of winter, improves memory and concentration levels.
In fact, just an hour walking through countryside increases the brain's performance by a fifth. In contrast a walk through busy streets, perhaps shopping for sales bargains, has no improving effect on the brain at all.21世纪教育网版权所有
The research was carried out at the University of Michigan. One group was sent out on a 50-minute walk through streets lined with office buildings and busy with traffic while the other took a quiet, tree-lined route. Afterwards the volunteers' mental skills were assessed in a series of tests, and compared to their performance before setting off on the walks. Results showed that those who took the “nature route” improved their short-term memory by 20 per cent. There were no improvements after walking down city streets.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
It is thought that the countryside is “restorative” because it allows people to switch off, while walking in towns and cities requires attention.
Marc Berman, a researcher at the University of Michigan, suggested interacting with nature can help cure mental tiredness. “I would highly recommend going away for a little break in the country or simply going for a walk in a park in a town,” he said. “Our research has shown the effects on memory and attention are real.”
The research also found memory and attention improved after simply looking at pictures of nature rather than photos of built-up areas.
Mr. Berman added: “Interacting with nature can have similar effects as meditating (冥想). You don’t hear people say, ‘Well, I got really tired out looking at this beautiful waterfall’. Nature does not make any demands of you.”
68. What do we know about the research mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. The volunteers were from the University of Michigan.
B. The volunteers’ mental skills weren’t judged before the test.
C. Walking down streets does no benefit to people’s mental skills.
D. The longer time a person walked, the better memory he would have.
69. The underlined word “restorative” probably means making people feel _______.
A. healthier B. colder C. more confident D. more reasonable
70. According to Mr. Berman, we can improve memory by ________.
A. looking at pictures of built-up areas
B. talking with friends about a park

A. our brain performs best when we are relaxed

Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and a half hours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa, talking
What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about
Betty shrugs. Talk We’re friends.
Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist(心理学家) Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is “marked and unmistakable.”www.21-cn-jy.com
More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress (感情危机). “Most women,” says Rubin, “identified at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”
“In general,” writes Rubin in her new book, “women’s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.” For the most part, Rubin says, interactions (交往) between men are emotionally controlled—a good fit with the social requirements of “manly behavior.”
“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes, “the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman’s closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.”
72. What old Harold cannot understand or explain is the fact that________.
A. he is treated as an outsider rather than a husband

A. Ending his marriage without good reason.
