How far would you go to make a good impression at a new job A college student in Alabama walked 32 kilometres in the dark to get to his new job.
The story begins with Walter Carr’s car breaking down the night before starting a new job. Carr was unable to find a ride. So, he figured out how long it would take to walk from his house to the job in Pelham — 32 kilometres away. He left at midnight so that he could make it to the customer’s house by 8:00 am the next morning.
Pelham police saw him walking along a highway at 4:00 am. So, they stopped to see if he needed help. After hearing his story, they took him to a restaurant for breakfast and then to a church where he could safely wait until 8:00 am. The police then took Carr to the home of customer Jenny Lamey. Lamey said that even though Carr had just walked the entire night, he refused her offer to rest. He just wanted to start working. While he worked, he talked with the customer, telling her how much he liked her kitchen.
Jenny Lamey later wrote this on Facebook: “I just can’t tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is kind and cheerful and he has big dreams! He is hard-working and tough.” She then started a GoFundMe page to help Walter with money to get his car fixed. When the CEO of Bellhops, Luke Marklin, learned of Carr’s story, he drove from Tennessee to Alabama to give Walter his own 2014 Ford Escape.
Walter Carr’s story touched many others around the United States. Within a few days, people gave over $73,000 to the GoFundMe page. Carr has decided to give a part of the donations to the Birmingham Education Foundation. And he has received more offers for jobs and scholarships for schools.
4. Why did Walter Carr decide to go to work on foot
A. He wanted to challenge himself. B. He wished to be on time for the job.
C. He was unable to borrow a car. D. His car was damaged beyond repair.
5. What can we infer about Carr from Paragraph 3
A. He was devoted to his job. B. He was blamed by his customer.
C. He called the police for help. D. He started to work after a short break.
6. What kind of person does Lamey think Carr is
A. Cautious. B. Generous. C. Ambitious. D. Sensitive.
7. What message does the text really convey
A. One has to suffer in order to get a good job.
B. A good impression is sure to bring one good money.
C. One has to give up something in return for donations.
D. The efforts to leave a good impression are to pay off.
C
In the digital age, we rely on technology such as social media in trying to build interesting and varied lives. Social networking sites like Facebook are designed and promoted to make us believe enthusiastically that they are able to open up new experiences for us. There are constant notifications (通知) and updates, urging us to check-in to find out what is new.
But if we do not use the technology wisely, we can end up becoming overly attached and trapped in a cycle of social media FOMO, a sign of deeper unhappiness. FOMO, or fear of missing out, is a fear that exciting or interesting events are happening somewhere else and that we are not able to join.
People who experience high levels of FOMO have been found to be more likely to give in to urges to write and check text messages while driving, as well as to use Facebook more often directly after waking, while going to sleep and during meals.
When it comes to lasting happiness, it is best not to give in to FOMO, but rather to deal with the cycle of desires that fuel it. Hard as it is, we are better off working toward facing the fearful reality that we cannot experience everything we might like than to get caught in a cycle of checking behaviors that only cause anxiety.
If we have become used to using social media as part of our attempts at living interesting lives, we must admit that it is not easy to change our approach. But change is almost always worthwhile in the long run.
The fact that FOMO is so common in our digital age is a sign that there is something wrong with the way we are pursuing happiness and that we are not as happy as we might think we are. It should warn us that, in our eagerness to use digital technology to try to make ourselves happier, we may unintentionally (无意之中) be bringing on exactly the opposite result.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The digital age has arrived.
B. Sites give netizens useful experiences.
C. People have fallen into modern technology.
D. Social media are designed to attract public attention.
9. Which of the following could be regarded as social media FOMO
A. Failing to use Facebook. B. Answering a call during shopping
C. Reading text messages on reaching offices. D. Checking Facebook while driving.
10. Why does the author suggest avoiding FOMO
A. To gain long-time happiness. B. To speed the cycle of desires.
C To work much better. D. To reduce fearful reality.
11. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Everybody has experienced FOMO.
B. Digital technology may make us unhappier.
C. Pursuing happiness is a sign of the digital age.
D. People may unintentionally get lost in technology.
D
As the world’s population grows, farmers will need to produce more and more food. And large farms are increasingly using precision farming to increase yields (产量), reduce waste, and reduce the economic and security risks that inevitably accompany agricultural uncertainty.
Traditional farming relies on managing entire fields—making decisions related to planting, harvesting, irrigating, and applying pesticides and fertilizer (农药和化肥)—based on regional conditions and historical data. Precision farming, by contrast, combines sensors, robots, GPS, mapping tools and data-analytics software to customize(量身定制)the care that plants receive without increasing labor. Robot-mounted sensors and camera-equipped drones (无人机) wirelessly send images and data on individual plants to a computer, which looks for signs of health and stress. Farmers receive the feedback in real time and then deliver water, pesticide or fertilizer in adjusted doses(剂量)to only the areas that need it. The technology can also help farmers decide when to plant and harvest crops.
As a result, precision farming can improve time management, reduce water and chemical use, and produce healthier crops and higher yields—all of which benefit farmers’ bottom lines and conserve resources while reducing chemical runoff.
Many small businesses are developing new software, sensors, and other tools for precision farming, as are large companies such as Monsanto, John Deere, Bayer, Dow and DuPont. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration all support precision farming, and many colleges now offer course work on the topic.
In a related development, seed producers are applying technology to improve plant characteristics. By following individual plants over time and analyzing which ones flourish in different conditions, companies can relate the plants’ response to their environments with their genomics (基因组学). That information, in turn, allows the companies to produce seed varieties that will grow well in specific soil and weather conditions. This advanced technology may also help to improve crop nutrition.
Farmers do not universally welcome precision agriculture for various reasons, such as high equipment costs and lack of access to the Internet. The technology may bring great challenges to experienced farmers who are not good at computers. And large systems will also be beyond the reach of many small farming operations in developing nations. But less expensive, simpler systems could potentially be applied. For others, though, cost savings in the long run may reduce the financial concerns. And however reticent some farmers may be to adopt new technology, the next generation of farmers are likely to warm to the approach.
12. Precision farming differs from traditional farming partly because it ________.
A. guarantees high yields with more labor
B. relies on regional conditions and historical data
C. offers plenty of water, pesticides and fertilizer
D. provides real time information about target crops
13. About precision farming, we can learn that________.
A. the government holds a cautious attitude
B. it draws positive responses from businesses
C. seed producers have already made huge profits
D. large systems will soon be built in developing nations
14. The underlined word “reticent” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A disappointed B. confused
C. unwilling D. shocked
15. What is the best title for the passage
A. Precision Farming Increases Crop Yields
B. More Challenges Faced by Modern Farmers
C. Development of Farming Systems in the U.S.
D. Traditional Farming is Gradually Disappearing

Can Animals Predict Earthquakes
The belief that animals can predict earthquakes has been around for centuries. In 373 B.C., historians recorded that some animals deserted the Greek City of Helice in groups just days before a quake hit the place. ____16____ Fish moving violently and chickens that stop laying eggs were reported. Countless pet owners claimed to have witnessed their dogs and cats acting strangely before the ground shook.
____17____ It was documented in news reports that three days before the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, thousands of toads (蟾蜍) appeared on the streets in Mianzhu, a city hit very hard where 2,000 people were killed. Also snakes reportedly left their homes and headed for safety several days before the destructive earthquake.
____18____ Some theories are that they feel movements, or weak “shocks”, in the earth before humans do; or that they become aware of gases going out of the earth. Another belief is that animals are very much in tune with Earth’s magnetic (磁性的) field, so they detect electrical signals caused by electromagnetic field changes, causing them to pay attention to the warning that an earthquake is about to happen.
The United States Geological Survey states that there has been no concrete evidence for the fact that animal behavior has a relationship with the occurrence of an earthquake. ____19____ American experts on earthquakes are also skeptical. They think that animals may have strange behavior at any time due to other reasons—because they are hungry defending their “countries”, or are about to face a dangerous situation. ____20____ They continue to follow the “anecdotal evidence”. The hope is that one day what they have learned will prove to be extremely useful in predicting earthquakes more accurately, thus saving millions of lives.
A. Exactly what animals have sensed can’t be fully understood.
B. The connection between them has never been scientifically made.
C. Other researchers around the world, however, have not given up on the idea.
D. It is necessary to know if the animal behavior is an advanced warning signal.
E. Records of similar animal foretelling of earthquakes have surfaced ever since.
F. Wild creatures also show various kinds of abnormal reactions before earthquakes.
G. Perhaps this sense that some animals appear to have can protect us from natural disasters.

A. disappointed B. confused
C. unwilling D. shocked
15. What is the best title for the passage
A. Precision Farming Increases Crop Yields
B. More Challenges Faced by Modern Farmers
C. Development of Farming Systems in the U.S.
D Traditional Farming is Gradually Disappearing
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Traditional farming relies on managing entire fields—making decisions related to planting, harvesting, irrigating, and applying pesticides and fertilizer (农药和化肥)—based on regional conditions and historical data.”(传统农业依赖于对整个农田的管理——根据地区条件和历史数据作出与种植、收获、灌溉和施用农药和化肥有关的决策。);根据文章第三段“Precision farming, by contrast, combines sensors, robots, GPS, mapping tools and data-analytics software to customize(量身定制)the care that plants receive without increasing labor.”(相比之下,精准农业结合了传感器、机器人、GPS、地图工具和数据分析软件,在不增加劳动力的情况下量身定制植物所接受的照料。)通过对比可知,精准农业不同于传统农业的部分原因在于它利用科技,实时获取目标作物的信息,量身定制植物所接受的照料。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Many small businesses are developing new software, sensors, and other tools for precision farming, as are large companies such as Monsanto, John Deere, Bayer, Dow and DuPont. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration all support precision farming, and many colleges now offer course work on the topic.”(许多小企业正在开发新的软件、传感器和其他用于精确农业的工具,像孟山都、约翰迪尔、拜耳、陶氏化学和杜邦等大公司也是如此。
根据文章最后一段“Farmers do not universally welcome precision agriculture for various reasons, such as high equipment costs and lack of access to the Internet. The technology may bring great challenges to experienced farmers who are not good at computers.”(由于设备成本高、无法上网等原因,农民并不普遍欢迎精准农业。该技术可能会给不擅长计算机的有经验的农民带来巨大的挑战。)可知目前大多数农民是不喜欢精准农业的;根据文章“And however reticent some farmers may be to adopt new technology, the next generation of farmers are likely to warm to the approach.”(尽管有些农民可能会reticent采用新技术,下一代农民可能会倾向于采取这种做法。)由however“尽管”和the next generation of farmers are likely to warm to the approach“下一代农民可能会倾向于采取这种做法”可知however后面表示的是与“the next generation of farmers are likely to warm to the approach(下一代农民可能会倾向于采取这种做法)”相反的事情,即有些农民可能会不愿意采用新技术,这个与本段前面所说的“Farmers do not universally welcome precision agriculture”(农民并不普遍欢迎精准农业)相吻合。即可推知reticent意为“不愿意”。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“And large farms are increasingly using precision farming to increase yields (产量), reduce waste, and reduce the economic and security risks that inevitably accompany agricultural uncertainty.”(大型农场越来越多地使用精准农业来提高产量,减少浪费,降低伴随着农业不确定性的不可避免地经济和安全风险。)
They think that animals may have strange behavior at any time due to other reasons—because they are hungry, defending their “countries”, or are about to face a dangerous situation.
