There are 225 students in Common Ground’s campus, who attend class on 20 acres (英亩) of land surrounded by West Rock Ridge State Park. Students take classes outside, learn how to tend to the land and grow food for local communities where access to fresh produce is insufficient.
Teachers at Common Ground say their students seem to be more engaged in the classroom when compared to most students at traditional public high schools. They say this is due in part to the autonomy that students are given over their education. “In class, students aren’t just being lectured; they’re experiencing their lessons,” O’connor, a senior at Common Ground said. “We’re very hands on. We’ve had science classes where we go outside and do experiments within nature. We’ll go into the wetlands and do experiments where we interact with the fish or the frogs out there.”
Samantha Townsend, an English teacher at Common Ground said the school encourages students to be active participants in their learning process. “There’s more cooperative learning here where they work in groups and have the opportunity to make a choice about what works best for them in their learning,” Townsend said. “If a student would prefer to write a poem rather than write an essay, then we allow them to tap into their unique passion, skill, or interest.”
“They’re looking at the world in a very different way. They’re thinking about climate change. They’re thinking about the types of food we eat and the impact it has on our bodies and on their communities,” Cherry Pacquette-Emmanuel, High School Director said. She said she wanted students to take their experience at Common Ground and understand their future careers could be anything they want it to be. To not just have a career to have a career, but make sure their life’s work is making a difference. “The fact that the concept for Common Ground came about because there’s some educators that wanted to do things differently and have created this really unique space,” she said.
4. What do the students of Common Ground do outside
A. Grow produce. B. Plant trees. C. Do research. D. Hunt for jobs.
5. Why are the students in Common Ground more engaged in learning
A. Because they hate traditional learning. B. Because they are autonomous students.
C. Because they study in a closed campus. D. Because they get experiential education.
6. What does Townsend think of the teaching of Common Ground
A It was unique to Common Ground. B. It was unfriendly to differences.
C. It was devoted to local communities. D. It was attentive to individuation.
7. What is the School Director’s expectation of the students
A. To be a poet or a writer. B. To pursue their dreams.
C. To understand educators. D. To have a well-paid job.
A 5. D 6. D 7. B

We’ll go into the wetlands and do experiments where we interact with the fish or the frogs out there.”

When glaciers melt, they leave behind infertile (贫瘠的) landscapes. But a new study found that within just three years, such exposed land was restored by llamas (美洲驼), whose activity enriched the soil and promoted plant growth. By the foot of Peru’s melting Uruashraju glacier, researchers partnered with local farmers to farm llamas on four specific plots. For three days a month from 2019 to 2022, the llamas grazed (吃青草) the plots, fertilizing them with waste and spreading seeds from droppings.
As is the case worldwide, glaciers are disappearing in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca mountains at an alarming rate. And as the ice melts, nearby ecosystems wither: They lose access to summertime supplies of freshwater and sometimes encounter harmful acidic minerals in rocks once covered by the glaciers.
Llamas may help count er some of these effects. Their transformation of the land, as seen in the new study, could reduce rock weathering and help the soil hold onto more dampness, thus limiting the acidic runoff that can poison farmers’ crops. Such pollution is one reason why local farmers partnered with the researchers. The animals’ behavior could one day even generate new grasslands as soil quality improves.
The idea that animal grazing may positively impact a landscape is not new. Nor is rewilding, the push to bring key species back to their native ecosystems, unique to the Cordillera Blanca mountains. In Finland, for example, the Indigenous Sami are working to reintroduce reindeer in deforested land, potentially restoring it. But the size and speed of the changes the llamas helped bring about surprised the researchers. From 2021 to 2022, the average amount of plant cover in the llama plots grew from about 9 percent to nearly 14 percent—faster than it did in four control plots. The research underscores the valuable roles animals play in shaping landscapes, says ecologist Kelsey Reider of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., “The animals themselves are doing a lot.”
12. What did the new study find
A. Llamas could help improve ecology. B. Llamas needed to be exposed to soil.
C. Llamas might survive poor situation. D. Llamas were able to stop ice melting.
13. What does the underlined word “wither” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Expand. B. Arise. C. Integrate. D. Worsen.
14. Why did the farmers work with the researchers
A. Because they longed to be more learned.
B. Because they profited from the research.
C. Because they wanted to keep llamas away.
D. Because they failed to know llamas’ behavior.
15. What can we know from the last paragraph
A. Llamas restore the forest in Finland. B. Wildlife helps a lot in restoring nature.
C. The idea of rewilding isn’t common. D. The research should collect more data.
A 13. D 14. B 15. B
根据文章第一段“But a new study found that within just three years, such exposed land was restored by llamas (美洲驼), whose activity enriched the soil and promoted plant growth.(但一项新的研究发现,在短短三年内,这些暴露的土地就被美洲驼恢复了,它们的活动丰富了土壤,促进了植物的生长。)” 故选A项。
根据下文“They lose access to summertime supplies of freshwater and sometimes encounter harmful acidic minerals in rocks once covered by the glaciers.(他们失去了夏季淡水的供应,有时还会在曾经被冰川覆盖的岩石中遇到有害的酸性矿物质。)”
根据文章第三段“Their transformation of the land, as seen in the new study, could reduce rock weathering and help the soil hold onto more dampness, thus limiting the acidic runoff that can poison farmers’ crops. Such pollution is one reason why local farmers partnered with the researchers.(正如在这项新研究中所看到的那样,它们对土地的改造可以减少岩石的风化,帮助土壤保持更多的水分,从而限制可能毒害农民作物的酸性径流。这种污染是当地农民与研究人员合作的原因之一。)”可知,限制毒害农民作物的酸性径流是对农民有益的,所以农民和研究人员合作的原因是因为他们从研究中可以获利。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“From 2021 to 2022, the average amount of plant cover in the llama plots grew from about 9 percent to nearly 14 percent—faster than it did in four control plots. The research underscores the valuable roles animals play in shaping landscapes, says ecologist Kelsey Reider of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., “The animals themselves are doing a lot.”(从2021年到2022年,llama 的平均植物覆盖率从9%增长到近14%,比四个对照地的增长速度要快。弗吉尼亚州哈里森堡詹姆斯·麦迪逊大学的生态学家凯尔西·赖德说,这项研究强调了动物在塑造景观方面发挥的重要作用,“动物本身也在做很多事情。”)”可推知,野生动物对恢复自然有很大帮助。故选B项。

第二节 (满分 25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
What my father wore embarrassed me! I wanted him to dress like a doctor or lawyer, but he always dressed like my father, getting up before dawn every day to make breakfast for my mother and me.
We lived in South Texas, where my father worked as a repairman. He often wore a pair of jeans and a shirt, keeping his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. His boots were those with steel toes that made them difficult to pull off his feet, which I sometimes helped him with when he returned from repairing cars — his job that also shamed me.
I blamed the way he dressed. I felt that my classmates laughed at me because they’d seen him mowing lawns (修剪草坪) in cut-off jeans and black boots. My classmates’ families paid men to beautify their lawns, while their fathers travelled in the bay wearing lemon-yellow sweaters and expensive shoes.
He preferred clothes that allowed him the freedom to move under cars. So even when taking part in a school trip with me, he was dressed in his repairman’s suit. On the school bus to the campsite, all students on the bus happily chatted with their parents except me, who lowered the head, avoiding spotting my classmates’ mocking glance (讥笑的眼光) or hearing their jokes, which I thought was about nothing else but what my father wore.
I regretted telling my parents the school trip, and I was very angry why my mother had no spare time while my father happened to have a vacation. But my father failed to read my mind. He was very happy, whistling a tune along the way.
Though my father didn’t sense my bad mood, the school bus seemed as sad as I was. It drove more and more slowly and finally it stopped on the roadside. The driver got out to check the bus but found nothing wrong. Students and parents on the bus began to whisper about what was happening, worried that the delay might spoil the journey.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
When others were complaining, my father stood up.

The school bus restarted and everyone cheered.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When others were complaining, my father stood up. Dressed in his repairman’s suit, he had jumped off the school bus without hesitation before I could stop him. “Another chance to be laughed at.” I thought to myself. He examined the bus carefully, using his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. It was quite a long time before he was back on the bus again, his hands smeared with oil but a broad smile on his face. He told the driver that there was something was wrong with the engine, but now it was ok.
The school bus restarted and everyone cheered. All the parents thumbed up to show their appreciation and those who once mocked me even smiled at me with admiration. I hugged my father tightly for a minute. Only then did I feel proud though he still wore those plain clothes. I finally understood one can’t be judged by what he or she wears. I no longer envy others having a father dressed smartly. I love my father, who teaches the profound truth: It is one’s character, not what one wears that really matters.

There are 225 students in Common Ground’s campus who attend class on 20 acres (英亩) of land surrounded by West Rock Ridge State Park.
A. It was unique to Common Ground. B. It was unfriendly to differences.
C. It was devoted to local communities. D. It was attentive to individuation.
7. What is the School Director’s expectation of the students
A. To be a poet or a writer. B. To pursue their dreams.
C. To understand educators. D. To have a well-paid job.

C Llamas might survive poor situation.
