We use the past continuous tense to talk about things during like(key words):

基本概念：表示过去某一时刻正在进行的动作以及过去某一段时间内持续进行的动作。
可以用于以下三种情况：
1.表示过去某一时刻正在进行的动作。
2.表示过去某一时间段正在进行的动作。
For example：

2.People were running in all directions while pieces of glass and bricks were falling down.
3.As I was trying down to find my way out,I suddenly heard some noise above me。
3.用于含有when,while或者as的主从复合句中。
